Abstract:Background: Student ePortfolios provide an interactive space for faculty, student peers, and potential employers to view skillsets and reflective expressions of students. Educational activity: The adoption of ePortfolios in an interdisciplinary, competency-based, master's degree program in clinical research at a university in the Midwestern United States is described. Students submitted their ePortfolios as their culminating assessment. A survey was used to collect objective and open-ended responses from 104 students between 2015 and 2019 followed by a voluntary post-survey interview. Two ePortfolio platforms and instructional methods were compared. Critical analysis of the educational activity: A user-friendly platform enhanced student engagement and reduced student and faculty frustration with the ePortfolio requirement. Thirty-seven students and alumni responded to an ePortfolio survey, and five students shared their experiences in a post-survey interview. Students described positive experiences related to their academic program and job search as a result of completing the ePortfolio. However, alumni were not strongly motivated to maintain their ePortfolio post-graduation. ePortfolios provide evidence of student acquisition of core competencies in a professional graduate degree. Facilitating the process of ePortfolio creation with instruction guides, exemplar ePortfolios, and an evaluation rubric support student success. A user-friendly ePortfolio platform with social media linking features will enhance exposure of the student's work to key stakeholders during and after their academic program. If the ePortfolio is to have an impact on a student's professional trajectory after graduation, it should contain meaningful examples of academic work that can be shared publicly and allow updating of ePortfolio content.
Evaluating the portfolio as a social work capstone project: a case study in Hong Kong

Abstract:Capstone experiences can be an important rite of passage for students. The portfolio has been discussed in social work education discourse as a valuable pedagogic method for a capstone project. However, there are only a small number of studies evaluating the actual impacts of portfolio use in a social work program. This article addresses this gap, describing and evaluating the use of portfolios as capstone projects in a social work program in Hong Kong. The findings suggest that the portfolio-based capstone project is generally a positive experience from both instructors and students' perspectives and that there are three key learning impacts of this pedagogic method: i) the consolidation of students' learning throughout the program; ii) professional identity development; and iii) enhanced reflexivity. This study indicates that the small group tutorial format is a key attribute that contributes to these learning impacts. Further, the findings shed light on critical points of review and discussion regarding the program and the professionalization of social work in Hong Kong—specifically, the need to review and discuss the decolonization and localization of social work education.

Abstract:The social media platform and the information dissemination revolution have changed the thinking, needs, and methods of students, bringing development opportunities and challenges to higher education. This paper introduces social media into the classroom and uses quantitative analysis to investigate the relation between design college students' learning self-efficacy and social media for design students, aiming to determine the effectiveness of social media platforms on self-efficacy. This study is conducted on university students in design media courses and is quasi-experimental, using a randomized pre-test and post-test control group design. The study participants are 73 second-year design undergraduates. Independent samples t-tests showed that the network interaction factors of social media had a significant impact on college students learning self-efficacy. The use of social media has a significant positive predictive effect on all dimensions of learning self-efficacy. Our analysis suggests that using the advantages and value of online social platforms, weakening the disadvantages of the network, scientifically using online learning resources, and combining traditional classrooms with the Internet can improve students' learning self-efficacy.

Students' Evaluation of Their Experiences with Project-Based Learning in a 3D Design Class

Abstract:This study investigated college students' experiences with project-based learning in 3D design, specifically for 3D modeling. A total of 49 college students from a Visual Arts program participated in this study. By implementing a project-based assignment throughout one semester, each student was responsible for completing his or her proposed design. In-class and out-of-class complementary methods were implemented throughout the semester. Focus group interviews were conducted to examine students' use of self-regulated learning methods and experiences with project-based learning in the class. The results revealed that adopting PBL with complementary methods was helpful for developing students' practical capacity and self-regulated learning attitude. The students used a combination of self-regulated learning methods in their projects, including other resources, online materials, problem notes, sharing activities, project diaries, and personal schedules. Their experiences with project-based learning were mainly related to motivation, sharing and feedback, and the teaching approach in the class. Some students expressed thinking of self-efficacy, problem solving, and reflection and self-assessment in the class. In general, the students showed more interest in 3D design, and higher motivation to complete the project. The project achievement promoted students' confidence, practical skills, interest in the subject, and most importantly, their self-regulated learning attitude.

Abstract:Open educational resources (OER), which are teaching, learning, and research materials that are openly licensed, are growing in popularity in higher education. Previous studies have focused on faculty and student perceptions and use of OER. In this study, we examined how actively engaging students as curators and designers of OERs through project-based learning as part of an open educational practice shaped students’ attitudes, motivation, and learning. This paper presents post-course survey data collected from 69 undergraduate and graduate students from six different courses that featured OER design projects, including: (1) A digital media online course; (2) Online tools for teaching and learning website; (3) History/social studies wiki pages; (4) Campus resources film project; (5) Professional learning networks for educators online course; and (6) Teaching with technology eBook. Findings indicate that shifting students’ roles from consumers to curators and creators of OERs increased motivation, improved attitudes about learning, aided the achievement of course learning objectives, and supported the development of valuable skills for 21st century success.

Abstract:Social media and social media education has permeated fashion merchandising programmes. At the same time, social media influencers have become an essential marketing and advertising strategy for fashion brands to reach consumers. Traditional educational models, such as classroom lectures and textbooks help expose students to theoretical learning outcomes, but they can lack real-world applications, problem-solving, and self-reflection. Therefore, this paper introduces an experiential learning project that provides students real-world applications regarding social media influencer marketing as 'lived experiences'. Specifically, the project provided students with an opportunity to become an Instagram influencer by creating unique and engaging content for cotton fibres and textiles. An experiential learning model was used as the framework for this project and assisted in the creation of a student competition. Through the project's four-stage process, students demonstrated positive learning outcomes, skills, and knowledge relevant to social media, social media influencers, and fashion marketing.
Analyzing the role of Facebook-based e-portfolio on motivation and performance in English as a second language learning

Abstract:This study investigates the role of Facebook posts as online triggers for English as a Second Language (ESL) learner’ motivation and performance. The study explores the motivational dynamics of how Facebook language influences learning in the community by exploring the interconnectedness of emotional linguistic strategies. A mixed-methods approach was adopted to collect Facebook posts and open coding and thematic coding techniques were employed to analyze the data. The participants were administered pre- and post-tests to collect their performance outcomes for t-tests. The findings reveal that Facebook posts about learning English as a second language (L2) provide primary motivation for learners and promote their performance. These posts are triggers for their L2 understanding and enhance their language learning motivation and performance. Their affirmation and agreement, sharing of personal experiences and testimonials, reflection, seeking advice and guidance work as projectors in the motivational strategies of ESL learners. Furthermore, motivation is facilitated by the use of attractive Facebook posts. Additionally, practical implications highlight the importance of creating supportive and engaging language learning environments. Further research is recommended to explore motivational dynamics in different digital contexts and platforms.

Abstract:Background and Aim: This study aims to explore the application of the Xiaohongshu mobile application in creating electronic portfolios, as well as editing, storing, and displaying students' electronic works in design sketch classes. The use of electronic portfolios can encourage students to constantly reflect on their artistic creations and improve their level of artistic performance. The objective of this research is to utilize the Xiaohongshu software as a platform for teaching technology and investigate the integration of electronic portfolios into design sketch classes, to enhance students' performance in design sketch works. Materials and Methods: The research utilized pre-tests and post-tests are conducted to evaluate students' performance in four areas of their design sketches: composition, space, details of objects and environment, and line quality. The questionnaire was used to measure students' PU and PEOU during the process of creating an electronic portfolio using Xiaohongshu software. Data were collected through test scoring and questionnaires, and statistical analysis and path hypothesis tests were conducted by Jamovi software. Results: The integration of the Xiaohongshu application software into the design sketch course exhibited positive outcomes. Analysis of pre-and post-test data revealed significant improvements in students' design sketch proficiency across various dimensions: composition, space representation, detailing of objects and environments, and line quality. Questionnaire survey results demonstrated favorable perceptions among students regarding the perceived usefulness and ease of utilizing the app for electronic portfolio creation. The study's findings suggest that the app contributes effectively to enhancing students' artistic capabilities. Conclusion: This study introduced the Xiaohongshu application software as an innovative e-learning tool for documenting painting processes and fostering curriculum exchange. Through a quasi-experimental approach, it assessed the software's impact on students' design sketch proficiency by creating electronic portfolios. The study also surveyed students' perceptions of its usefulness and ease of use. Findings demonstrated that integrating Xiaohongshu positively affected students' design skills, particularly in composition, spatial representation, detailing, and line quality. Students' positive feedback further validated the software's effectiveness. Additionally, the study highlighted the emergence of live online courses as a potential teaching mode. Future research could expand its scope by investigating diverse painting techniques and longer timeframes. In essence, this study underscores technology's transformative potential in traditional artistic education, paving the way for innovative pedagogical approaches and enhancing students' artistic growth.

Abstract:Today, various communication activities represented by communication and exchange between people are being used as an important method for creative problem-solving in design. A social network service (SNS) called 'Pinterest' has the advantage of active communication and acquisition of visual information in the design field based on images, and is increasingly emerging. The purpose of this study is to examine the use cases and behaviors in the design field, where creative work is prioritized, in that design is the transmission and exchange of image information, and to explore the influence and direction it will have on basic design education. Accordingly, a questionnaire survey was conducted on 261 college students majoring in design, and meaningful data on the recent use of Pinterest was obtained. As a result of the survey, it was found that Pinterest, as a vast image-based SNS, has the ease of use to obtain design ideas suitable for one's major field, and actively participates in its use by logging in at least once a day. In addition, it was confirmed that most of the subjects recognized that Pinterest was more helpful in improving problem-solving ability and creativity than when not using Pinterest. It can be said that the significance of this study is that it has deduced a certain research result of acquiring basic data that can contemplate new possibilities of basic design education process and subject design in universities through this study.
Korean Pre-Service Teachers' Experiences of Creating an Online Teaching Portfolio in the Teacher Preparation Course

Abstract:An online teaching portfolio is a digital collection of artifacts for a teacher's professional development and practice. This portfolio includes a teacher's skills, experiences, and achievements and can be used for professional growth, evaluation, and job search. Recognizing the importance of pre-service teachers' experiences of the portfolio, this study aims to understand the effectiveness of online teaching portfolios (e-portfolios) for Korean pre-service teachers. This study implemented mixed methods during the 2022 academic year, including an exit survey (n=62) and individual interviews (n=4). Study results indicated that the Korean pre-service teachers showed a positive learning experience because they could think about the connections between theory and practice while making the e-portfolio. In addition, making an e-portfolio could positively enhance the PSTs' technology integration ability in lesson planning and evaluations. Also, Korean pre-service teachers self-evaluated that they gained greater confidence in learning new technology applications in their lessons. Based on these results, several implications are discussed regarding the effective usage of online teaching portfolios for teacher preparation programs. By prioritizing creativity, empathy, and iteration, this innovative approach seeks to bolster student motivation and satisfaction. Employing a quasi-experimental design, the research involved third-year nursing students and compared the efficacy of traditional PBL methods against a hybrid model that integrates design thinking principles. Notably, the experimental group's interaction with Google Jamboard significantly enhanced their engagement, resulting in notable improvements in both motivation and satisfaction. The findings underscore the benefits of merging online PBL with design thinking, particularly when supported by digital tools, in creating a more vibrant and effective learning environment. This methodology not only stimulates active learning but also fosters vital competencies such as critical thinking and collaboration, which are crucial in the nursing profession. Abstract:With the extensive integration of Internet technology and intelligent applications, online education has become the new normal of modern education. As a teaching strategy that emphasises student initiative and deep participation, project-based learning (PBL) has also been increasingly valued and widely used. Based on self-efficacy theory, this study adopts a qualitative research method to explore the motivation of art and design students in higher vocational colleges under the online PBL mode, to examine students' understanding and adaptation to the online PBL mode, and to analyse the advantages, difficulties and challenges of students in the PBL learning process. In addition, how PBL shapes students' perceptions of learning and career aspirations is also the focus of this study. Teachers' supportive role is crucial for optimising teaching strategies and improving the quality of education. This study provides suggestions for strategies to improve students' motivation and future career development in higher vocational art education, as well as a theoretical basis for pedagogical reform and student support services in art programmes.
Improving Design and Creative Ability of High School Students through Project Based Learning

Abstract:In 2018, the Ministry of Education issued General Senior High School Information Technology Curriculum Standard (2017). The new curriculum standard puts forward the concept of subject core literacy and requires project-based learning. The paper combines the design thinking concept of Stanford University with the project-based learning, redesigns the project-based learning mode, and carries on the teaching experiment, the experiment object is 40 senior two students. The experiment found that the project-based learning mode combined with design thinking has a positive effect on improving students' learning effect, innovation ability and core literacy. The students' learning enthusiasm, self-satisfaction and innovation ability are obviously improved. Through the interview, it is found that the students have also made some breakthroughs in their sense of social responsibility and empathy.

Abstract:Grounded in Nonaka and Takeuchi (Long Range Plan 54(4):102070, 2021) Socialization, Externalization, Combination, and Internalization (SECI) model, the present research develops a Blended Knowledge Sharing Activity (BKSA) model tailored for design practitioners, targeting the enhancement of learning outcomes and creativity. The investigation centers around the influence of BKSA on higher education students' learning achievements and creative potential, further delving into their application and performance relative to social media within design-related coursework. Employing a comprehensive methodological approach including sampling, t-tests, and structural equation modeling, questionnaires were disseminated to a cohort of 105 undergraduate students from two sophomore-level design classes. It is worth underscoring that despite the SECI model finding extensive applicability across numerous domains, its implementation within the context of design education remains comparatively underrepresented. This research lacuna served as a catalyst in our endeavor to apply the SECI model within knowledge-sharing activities specific to design majors, in anticipation of uncovering more potent strategies for learning and innovation. Our findings disclose a tangible positive correlation between BKSA and both the learning outcomes and creativity of undergraduate students. Moreover, the instrument we devised and utilized, acting as a robust measurement tool for the SECI model, provided additional validation for the beneficial influence of BKSA on university students' learning achievements and creative capacities. This novel insight not only redresses the underexplored application of the SECI model in design education but also furnishes a fresh theoretical vantage point for the amalgamation of blended learning and knowledge sharing paradigms.

Abstract:Project-based learning is a student-centered approach to learning that emphasizes hands-on experiences, collaboration, and real-world problem-solving. The process of evaluating students' learning outcomes in a learning project, however, faces numerous challenges. This study investigates the potential of mobile e-portfolios on the Google Sites platform as a means of enhancing project-based learning in the field of physics education. The study utilized a quasi-experimental design with two groups: an experimental group and a control group. The data collected from the pre-test and post-test were analyzed using a t-test to determine the significance of the difference in the mean scores between the experimental group and the control group. The questionnaire data were analyzed using descriptive statistics to identify patterns and trends in student feedback. The results show that the use of mobile e-portfolios on the Google Sites platform significantly enhanced student interest and learning outcomes. After the pedagogical experiment, the experimental group's test scores (7.92) were higher than the control group's (5.22). According to the findings of the survey questionnaire given to the experimental group, the majority of students indicated that using mobile e-portfolios boosted their involvement and motivation to learning, as well as their ability to plan and present their project work. In conclusion, the findings of this study suggest that mobile e-portfolios on Google Sites can be an effective tool for enhancing project-based learning.

Abstract:The Practical Courses in Engineering Education encourage higher-level thinking and creativity. Many of the practical courses' objectives are to develop end-to-end applications. Many tools exist to teach and engage practical courses online, but at the same time, it has several challenges. Making the students engaged after class hours is needed as practical courses require a lot of time to practice. To make the students genuinely participate and learn, we have involved gamification in the course and adopted a few social media platforms like GitHub, LinkedIn, YouTube, Kaggle, medium, etc., to submit the students' work as they are all public mediums. The course is offered to 124 participants of I B.Tech. Computer Science and Engineering stream students. By leveraging social media platforms and bringing in gamification in learning, the overall teaching-learning process gets highly benefited. The course-end survey results reported the students' positive attitudes and beliefs about social media use in education. An exploratory study comparing two electronic portfolio approaches in undergraduate dietetic education

Abstract:Abstract Aim The use of electronic portfolios in university learning, including within dietetic education, is increasing. We aimed to implement and evaluate an ePortfolio model as part of a final year undergraduate foodservice management unit. The qualitative evaluation focused on the relationships between different modes of eLearning. Methods A randomised parallel model study design was implemented, with the cohort of 52 students allocated to two different ePortfolio approaches. One student group received a blended learning teaching and learning model via the traditional study only Moodle ePortfolio. The second group received the enhanced Mahara ePortfolio through a supported online ePortfolio platform. Focus groups with study groups (Moodle ePortfolio, n = 16 students and Mahara ePorfolio, n = 15 students) were facilitated by an independent researcher. Focus groups were audiotaped and transcribed with data analysed separately and then together. Use of thematic analysis enabled comparisons to be made between the two ePortfolio experiences. Results Thematic analysis found broad themes of satisfaction and supporting learning consistently across both ePortfolio models. Satisfaction was related to both achievement and creativity of portfolio production. Subthemes related to supporting learning included: students requiring support with implementation of new technology, and more clearly defined assessment tasks to improve compatibility with the Mahara ePortfolio. Conclusions This research has provided key learnings for the incorporation of ePortfolios into foodservice management education, enabling unit content to meet the needs and expectations of students. Foodservice management competencies can be developed and demonstrated within ePortfolios as part of a blended learning approach.

Embedded Self-Conceptualization and Social Learning in Online Social Networking Platforms.

Abstract:Online social networking (OSN) has deeply penetrated university campuses, influencing multiple aspects of student life. Standing from a pedagogical perspective, this study investigates how university students' OSN engagement affect their learning outcomes. Drawn upon social learning theory, this study proposes that OSN engagement help university students' establishing the self-efficacy belief, achieving social acceptance and acculturation with environment, and these attributions further lead them to attain positive learning outcomes which are shaped by self-esteem development, satisfaction with university life, and the grade point average (GPA) based performance. Results from a survey accompanied by focus group discussions support these embedded self-conceptualization and social learning in OSN. This study contributes to the extant research on OSN for learning by highlighting the role of OSN for the whole person development, especially the students' self-conceptulization and psychological well-beings. The revealed mediating mechanisms also adds values to social learning theory and imply the design foci of e-learning activities and applications.

Abstract:Social media has encouraged a large number of organizations to design their work patterns to facilitate their employees through social media adoption. This study examines the effects of enterprise social media and public social media on the novelty-focused product design, and efficiency-focused product design that eventually explain the performance of the designers. Empirical analysis based on time-lagged, multi-source data set indicate that both enterprise social media and public social media are an important source of product designer's inspiration which are positively related to novelty-focused design and efficiency-focused product design. Results further indicate that efficiency-focused product design has a stronger impact on designer performance than novelty-focused design. Theoretical implications and practical implications are discussed in the later sections.

Abstract:Objectives: The purpose of the study is to examine various dimensions of aesthetic visual design and their role in predicting usability in e-learning in higher education institutions of northern India. Using quantitative means of data collection, this research identified, ways and means to make learning content effectively usable, that is, attractive, interesting, motivating, and engaging for the learners. Method: A survey questionnaire was developed through focused group discussions with field experts. Data were collected through online as well as offline modes. A Google form was created and its weblink was shared with the students pursuing degree courses in various state universities in northern India. Several visits and revisits were also undertaken to various universities to approach the respondents Results: Results confirmed consistency, typography, graphics, grid, and layout as factors responsible for predicting usability of e-learning. Surprisingly, color and compositional guidelines emerged insignificant. Implications: The study has implications for teaching and learning activities that promote effective learning. The findings are beneficial for course-design faculty who develop modules by considering visual design elements that can facilitate interaction with and understanding of content by students learning in an online modality.
