Abstract:Introduction: Appropriate selection of abutments is of utmost importance for the success of prosthetic rehabilitation. Root-crown ratio is an important diagnostic tool while selecting an abutment tooth for the fabrication of various types of prosthetic restorations. The present study was aimed to assess the root-crown ratio of the maxillary and mandibular first premolars in Nepalese population. Methods: In this descriptive cross-sectional study a total of 120 first premolars of both maxillary and mandibular arch were used. The data was collected from September 1, 2021 to October 30, 2021. The crown and root length of maxillary and mandibular right & left 1st premolars were measured using digital Vernier caliper. Then the root-crown ratio was calculated. The data was entered into SPSS version 26 and analyzed using descriptive statistics (mean, standard deviation). Results: The root crown ratio for maxillary first premolar was slightly higher in the right side on both buccal (1.569±0.181 mm) and palatal aspect (1.823±0.228 mm).The total tooth length was longer in left maxillary first premolar (22.15±1.621 mm) and right mandibular first premolar (23.639±1.327 mm) Conclusions: The assessment of root crown ratio can serve as an important clinical guideline for the selection of an abutment teeth for various type of prosthetic restorations. The ratio of root-crown can also be taken on extracted tooth. The cementoenamel junctioncan be used as reference point.
