Abstract:An imaging system combining parallel detection and two-photon excitation is presented in this paper. In the proposed method, seven avalanche photodiodes (APD) are used in the detection path. The light is guided onto the APD sensor by a fiber bundle with seven fibers. The circular arranged fiber end faces together function as a detection array. The outer contour fiber ends deviate from optical axis center and thus obtain higher frequency information. Seven images are acquired simultaneously by the detection array. By using deconvolution and pixel reassignment to process the images acquired, both the resolution and the contrast of the final image are enhanced. The capability of image quality enhancement of the system constructed is demonstrated successfully both by theoretical simulation and experimental results.
High-contrast and High-Stable Wavefront Shaping Multimode Fiber Imaging

Abstract:The main challenge in multimode fiber imaging is modal scrambling caused by environmental fluctuation. How to get high contrast and high stable imaging is the main question. In this presentation, we propose some methods to increase the contrast-to-noise ratio and stability of multimode fiber imaging. Wavelength modulation is introduced to suppress the background. Exhaustive bending effect was used to improve the imaging stability. Wavelength modulation is introduced to enhance the CNR four fold in a 200 μm field-of-view imaging. We show a near diffraction limited focusing capability at imaging depths of up to 150 µm with near constant lateral resolutions of 2.1 µm. The imaging of small fluorescent beads embedded in a 3D matrix was demonstrated.

Abstract:The silicon optical phased array has emerged as a promising approach for speckle imaging through multimode fibers. High spatial resolution typically requires a large number of phase channels. In this paper, we propose and demonstrate a high-resolution wavelength-scanning multimode fiber imaging system, enabled by an integrated optical phased array with only 8 phase shifters. By scanning 50 different wavelengths within a 10-nm span, the number of linearly independent speckle patterns is significantly increased from 57 to 3000, ensuring high spatial resolution imaging. The speckle imaging model is modified for use with the wavelength-scanning system, and an algorithm based on particle swarm optimization is proposed for the automatic multiwavelength compensation. Two algorithms are used for image reconstruction. The pseudo-inverse method is computationally efficient and suitable for real-time imaging, while the iterative algorithm based on total-variation regularization can provide better image quality. An equivalent spatial resolution of 1.75 m is experimentally achieved with a field of view diameter of 105 m. The number of resolvable points is estimated to be 3000, which is two orders of magnitude greater than the number of phase shifters.

Abstract:Optical nanofiber-based single-photon source has attracted considerable interest due to its property of seamless integration with a single-mode fiber. With nanostructure engraved in the nanofiber, the single-photon collection efficiency can be greatly boosted with enhanced interaction between the single quantum emitter and the guided light. However, the prerequisite nanofabrication processes introduce complexities and extra loss. Here, we demonstrate that by simply placing a quantum emitter in the gap of two parallel nanofibers, single-photon coupling efficiency may reach 54.2%. Our numerical simulation results indicate that photon coupling efficiency of such simple structure is insensitive to the discrepancy in nanofiber radii, which further reduces the difficulties in device fabrication. Single-Pixel Multimode Fiber Spectrometer via Wavefront Shaping

Abstract:When light passes through a multimode fiber, two-dimensional random intensity patterns are formed due to the complex interference within the fiber. The extreme sensitivity of speckle patterns to the frequency of light paved the way for high-resolution multimode fiber spectrometers. However, this approach requires expensive IR cameras and impedes the integration of spectrometers on-chip. In this study, we propose a single-pixel multimode fiber spectrometer by exploiting wavefront shaping. The input light is structured with the help of a spatial light modulator, and optimal phase masks, focusing light at the distal end of the fiber, are stored for each wavelength. Variation of the intensity in the focused region is recorded by scanning all wavelengths under fixed optimal masks. Based on the intensity measurements, we show that an arbitrary input spectrum having two wavelengths 20 pm apart from each other can be reconstructed successfully (with a reconstruction error of ~3%) in the near-infrared regime, corresponding to a resolving power of $ R \approx 10^5 $. We also demonstrate the reconstruction of broadband continuous spectra for various bandwidths. With the installation of a single-pixel detector, our method provides low-budget and compact detection at an increased single-to-noise ratio.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a silicon photonic integrated circuit (PIC) for exciting different spatial modes launched into a multimode-fiber (MMF) speckle imaging system. The PIC consists of a 45-channel optical phased array and an array of nanoantennas to bridge the PIC and MMF. The nanoantenna array can excite a wide range of spatial modes in the MMF with a mode-group dependent loss of less than 3 dB. A high spatial resolution, which approaches the theoretical limit determined by the number of modes in the MMF, is realized by using the proposed PIC. An equivalent resolution of 1.75 μ m is experimentally attained across a field of view of 105 μ m. Two different algorithms for image reconstruction are compared. The algorithm based on truncated singular value decomposition is computationally efficient and suitable for real-time image reconstruction, whereas the algorithm based on total-variation regularization produces higher imaging quality. The number of resolvable points is derived to be ∼3000, which is more than the square of the number of phase shifters. These results represent the highest spatial resolution yet demonstrated in a PIC-based MMF imaging system.

Abstract:In single-pixel imaging, the combination of random speckles generated by the multimode fiber (MMF) as projection patterns and the compressed sensing theory is beneficial for improving imaging performance and expanding application scenarios. However, the image reconstruction quality using the MMF is usually unsatisfactory, which is helpless for retrieving objects with detailed information or multi-resolution objects. The reason lies in the limited number and compromised spatial resolution of low-correlated speckle patterns provided by the MMF in practical circumstances like long operating time or bending disturbances. Here, we propose a novel concept of hybrid multimode fibers (HMMF) for single-pixel imaging resolution enhancement. Based on the bending insensitivity property of single-mode fiber (SMF) and the compatibility property of small bending radius and high mode density of HMMF, the wavelength-modulated SMF-HMMF probe is designed to significantly improve the number and spatial resolution of speckle patterns while ensuring the robustness of the imaging system. The experimental results demonstrate that the spatial resolution of the speckle patterns has been improved by approximately 3 times (from 20.35 pixels to 7.24 pixels) compared to the non-HMMF probe. The correlation of the speckle patterns holds as low as about 0.1, even when the tuning wavelength interval is reduced to 5 pm. The maximum deviation of the repeatability of the speckle pattern was 0.044 for the 120-min interval tested, and the consistent output of the speckle pattern under various bending configurations demonstrates the strong robustness of the imaging system. High-quality imaging of multi-resolution target objects has been achieved even at a remarkably low sampling rate (SR) of 5 %. This study has the potential to expand the application of single-pixel imaging systems in flexible and long-distance detection imaging scenarios.

Abstract:We demonstrate that a high-numerical-aperture photonic crystal fiber allows lensless focusing at an unparalleled resolution by complex wavefront shaping. This paves the way toward high-resolution imaging exceeding the capabilities of imaging with multi-core single-mode optical fibers. We analyze the beam waist and power in the focal spot on the fiber output using different types of fibers and different wavefront shaping approaches. We show that the complex wavefront shaping technique, together with a properly designed multimode photonic crystal fiber, enables us to create a tightly focused spot on the desired position on the fiber output facet with a subwavelength beam waist.

Abstract:Fourier ptychographic microscopy (FPM), as an emerging computational imaging method, has been applied to quantitative phase imaging with resolution bypassing the physical limit of the detection objective. Due to the weak illumination intensity and long image acquisition time, the achieved imaging speed in current FPM methods is still low, making them unsuitable for real-time imaging applications. We propose and demonstrate a high-speed FPM method based on using laser illumination and digital micro-mirror devices for illumination angle scanning. In this new, to the best of our knowledge, FPM method, we realized quantitative phase imaging and intensity imaging at over 42 frames per second (fps) with around 1 µm lateral resolution. The quantitative phase images have revealed membrane height fluctuations of red blood cells with nanometer-scale sensitivity, while the intensity images have resolved subcellular features in stained cancer tissue slices.

Abstract:An ultrafast single-pixel optical 2D imaging system using a single multimode fiber (MF) is proposed. The MF acted as the all-optical random pattern generator. Light with different wavelengths pass through a single MF will generator all-optical random speckle patterns, which have a low correlation of 0.074 with 0.1nm wavelength step from 1518.0nm to 1567.9nm. The all-optical random speckle patterns are perfect for compressive sensing (CS) imaging with the advantage of low cost in comparison with the conventional expensive pseudorandom binary sequence (PRBS). Besides, with the employment of photonic time stretch (PTS), light of different wavelengths will go through a single capsuled MF in time serial within a short pulse time, which makes ultrafast single-pixel all-optical CS imaging possible. In our work, the all-optical random speckle patterns are analyzed and used to perform CS imaging in our proposed system and the results shows a single-pixel photo-detector can be employed in CS imaging system and a 27 by 27 pixels image is reconstructed within 500 measurements. In our proposed imaging system, the fast Fourier transform (FFT) spatial resolution, which is a combination of multiple Gaussians, is analyzed. Considering 4 optical speckle patterns, the FFT spatial resolution is 50 by 50 pixels. This resolution limit has been obtained by removing the central low frequency components and observing the significant spectral power along all the radial directions.

Abstract:Multimodal microscopes either use multiple cameras or a single camera to multiplex different modes spatially. The former needs expertise demanding alignment and the latter suffers from limited spatial resolution. Here, we report an alignment-free full-resolution simultaneous fluorescence and phase imaging approach using single-pixel detectors. By combining reference-free interferometry with single-pixel imaging scheme, we employ structured illumination to encode the phase and fluorescence of the sample into two single-pixel detection arms, and then conduct reconstruction computationally from the illumination patterns and recorded correlated measurements. The recovered fluorescence and phase images are inherently aligned thanks to single-pixel imaging scheme. To validate the proposed method, we built a proof-of-concept setup for first imaging the phase of an etched glass with given etching depth and then imaging the phase and fluorescence of the quantum dot sample. This method holds great potential for multispectral fluorescence microscopy with additional single-pixel detectors or a spectrometer. Besides, this cost-efficient multimodal system might find broad applications in biomedical science and material science.

Abstract:A single multimode fiber has been applied in minimally invasive endoscopy with wavefront shaping for biological research such as brain imaging. Most of the fibers, such as step-index and graded-index multimode fibers, give rise to spatially variant blur due to limits on the numerical aperture and collection efficiency. Routines to solve this problem are based on iterative algorithms, which are often slow and computer-intense. We developed a method to synthesize datasets for driving a deep learning network to deblur and denoise the spatially variant degraded image. This approach is fast (5 ms), up to three orders of magnitude faster than the iterative way. Furthermore, our method can be applied to different types of fiber endoscopy, and two types of fiber are tested here. The performance is verified on fluorescence beads and three kinds of biological tissue sections in the experiment, demonstrating effectiveness in image enhancement.

Abstract:Multimode fibers recently emerged as compact minimally-invasive probes for high-resolution deep-tissue imaging. However, the commonly used silica fibers have a relatively low numerical aperture (NA) limiting the spatial resolution of a probe. On top of that, light propagation within the solid core generates auto-fluorescence and Raman background, which interferes with imaging. Here we propose to use a hollow-core fiber to solve these problems. We experimentally demonstrate spatial wavefront shaping at the multimode hollow-core fiber output with tunable high-NA. We demonstrate raster-scan and speckle-based compressive imaging through a multimode hollow-core fiber.

Abstract:In this work we demonstrate 3D imaging using two-photon excitation through a 20 cm long multimode optical fiber (MMF) of 350 micrometers diameter. The imaging principle is similar to single photon fluorescence through a MMF, except that a focused femtosecond pulse is delivered and scanned over the sample. In our approach, focusing and scanning through the fiber is accomplished by digital phase conjugation using mode selection by time gating with an ultra-fast reference pulse. The excited two-photon emission is collected through the same fiber. We demonstrate depth sectioning by scanning the focused pulse in a 3D volume over a sample consisting of fluorescent beads suspended in a polymer. The achieved resolution is 1 micrometer laterally and 15 micrometers axially. Scanning is performed over an 80x80 micrometers field of view. To our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of high-resolution three-dimensional imaging using two-photon fluorescence through a multimode fiber.

Abstract:A flexible multimode fiber is an exceptionally efficient tool for in vivo deep tissue imaging. Recent advances in compressive multimode fiber sensing allow for imaging with sub-diffraction spatial resolution and sub-Nyquist speed. At present, the technology is limited to imaging in a two-dimensional (2D) plane near the fiber distal facet while in real applications it is very important to visualize three-dimensional (3D) structures. Here we propose a new approach for fast sub-diffraction 3D imaging through a multimode fiber by using a single 2D scan, speckle illumination, and bucket detection. We experimentally demonstrate precise image plane location as well as 3D imaging of samples with various scattering coefficients. The full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the point spread function along the axial direction is 3 times smaller than the diffraction limit. Our study grants depth-resolving capacity to ultra-thin super-resolution fiber endoscopes for life science and medical applications.
