Abstract:The racial identity has been a hot issue in the area of the Doris Lessing study because of the remarkable descriptions of the relationship between African whites and blacks in many of Lessing's works.Many scholars argue that Lessing stands by black people and speak for them.Yet some scholars hold an opposite opinion.This essay gets a new view by closely analyzing two texts that focus on the racial relationship in"Black Notebook"of The Golden Notebook by Doris Lessing,insisting that on the face of it,Lessing seems to be in the position of the African blacks and speak on behalf of them,but substantially her position is undoubtedly on the side of the western whites.
Triple Consciousness: The Reimagination of Black Female Identities in Contemporary American Culture

Abstract:Abstract My article underscores the intermediate existence of black American women between race and gender by stressing the role white patriarchy and black hypermasculinity play in the marginalisation of black female voices and the prioritisation of white women’s interests within and beyond mainstream feminist spaces. In order to legitimise this intermediate existence of black women, my article develops the triple consciousness theory (TCT). Inspired by W.E.B. Du Bois’ concept of double consciousness, TCT argues that black women view themselves through three lenses and not two: America, blackness and womanhood. Black feminists, TCT affirms, are able to reimagine misguided narratives of black womanhood in contemporary American culture by unpacking the complexity of this threefold consciousness. In Bad Feminist, Roxane Gay strives for the inclusion of pluralist voices in the mainstream feminist movement and in Lemonade, Beyonce uses Afrofuturist tropes, reappropriation and gothic imagery to exorcise the generational pain of betrayal by black men and white women. With Insecure, Issa Rae radicalises feminist theory by critiquing archetypes attached to black womanhood and in Marvel’s Black Panther, not only do black women possess the unprecedented agency to shape their own identities on their own terms, there is also an existential reconnection with their past.

Abstract:This History explores innovations in African American autobiography since its inception, examining the literary and cultural history of Black self-representation amid life writing studies. By analyzing the different forms of autobiography, including pictorial and personal essays, editorials, oral histories, testimonials, diaries, personal and open letters, and even poetry performance media of autobiographies, this book extends the definition of African American autobiography, revealing how people of African descent have created and defined the Black self in diverse print cultures and literary genres since their arrival in the Americas. It illustrates ways African Americans use life writing and autobiography to address personal and collective Black experiences of identity, family, memory, fulfillment, racism and white supremacy. Individual chapters examine scrapbooks as a source of self-documentation, African American autobiography for children, readings of African American persona poems, mixed-race life writing after the Civil Rights Movement, and autobiographies by African American LGBTQ writers.

Abstract:Frederick Douglass and Toni Morrison both dealt extensively with problems of black identity within their works. In Douglass’s Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave, Written by Himself and Toni Morrison’s The Bluest Eye, we find that black identity is strongly affected and by outside forces that seek to limit the ways in which black identity can develop in order for powerful forces such as institutional slavery to maintain their control over black people. This essay reads Frederick Douglass’s self-fashioning in his Narrative in comparison with characters from Morrison’s novel, particularly Pecola, and explores the ways in which black identity may be constructed against prevailing norms (as in Douglass’s case), or may end up being lost through extreme conformity with norms (as in Pecola’s case). An exploration of black identity in these works is important not only for an understanding of historically significant literature, but for present day problems around black identity.

Abstract:Toni Morrison’s novel The Bluest Eye uncovers the identity conflicts between the African- Americans and the whites due to the notions of Eurocentrism, America-centrism, racism, and dominance of the west over the east. This paper explores an African-American girl Pecola’s divided identity because of the reasons such as Dominance of West over the East, Being Black Immigrant, Lack of Recognition from Home and Society, Racism, and Poverty and Lack of Social security. The tragic part of their getting victimized is that due to the white standard of beauty even blacks regard themselves ugly and inferior, which gets analyzed by the use of W. E. B. Du Bois’ theory of double consciousness. Though the novel shows both reasons and consequences of an African-American girl Pecola’s divided identity, my paper mainly focuses on the reasons for Pecola’s divided identity.

Abstract:Beloved is one of the historical trilogy by the African-American writer Toni Morrison. This paper interprets the process of the three black women's self-consciousness awakening and identity construction in Beloved from the perspective of post-colonialism by Homi K. Bhabha. Morrison depicts the painful revealing of the disremembered past of black people in Beloved. Through the depiction of Sethe as well as other ex-slaves, the novel expresses that only by confronting ghosts and rediscovering history can the characters be able to break down their constructed otherness, and embark on the obtaining of a subjective position.

Abstract:The purpose of this qualitative research study is to explore ways Black women college students with experiences in the foster care system construct meaning of their foster care experiences, and how these experiences have influenced their higher education experiences, and the current status of their racial identity development. Using semi-structured interviews, the participant's narratives are constructed to span across defining moments in their childhood to their current selves in higher education. Guided by Black feminist thought and intersectionality, the questions that this research study asks are (a) how does being a Black woman with experiences in the foster care system impact a student's experience in higher education? and (b) what kinds of knowledge do these Black women perceive as lessons, that they acquired during their time in the foster care system? In centering the experience of being in foster care, this research highlights intragroup differences among Black women college students to demonstrate the complexity of racial identity development that transcends the boundaries of traditional racial identity models of measurement. The findings of this research illustrate the complexity of racial identity development for Black women college student with experiences in the foster care system.

The Discursive Dynamics of Chinese American Life Writing: Pardee Lowe and Jade Snow Wong

Abstract:The very titles of the two Chinese American autobiographies that will provide my points of focus throughout this essay, place in question the subject of the life to be told: Pardee Lowe’s Father and Glorious Descendant (1943) and Jade Snow Wong’s Fifth Chinese Daughter (1945/1950). Each begins by questioning the relationship between the teller and the told, a relation which really ought, in an autobiography, to be the least problematic aspect of the text. Father and Glorious Descendant and Fifth Chinese Daughter both destabilize the concept of the autobiographical genre as a set of expectations or values, as cultural norms, that assume the existence of the universal or self-identical subject. In these texts, the generic conventions of autobiography have been racialized through the innovative use of narrative point of view. The manipulation of narrative perspective and the disruption of any easy identification of the narrator with the autobiographical subject challenges the interpretive competence of the reader by challenging hegemonic conceptions of "Oriental" and "Chinese" and "American" and "Occidental". This challenge is made through the specific cultural discourses of Orientalism and Occidentalism. Pardee Lowe and Jade Snow Wong change the discursive dynamics of Chinese-American life writing in order to write the dynamic and hybrid lives of Chinese-Americans.

Abstract:This book presents how Nation and Narrative are bound together through the figure of the “N/native” as it appears in the non-fictional writings of Cornelia Sorabji, Grazia Deledda, Zitkála-Šá, Virginia Woolf, Victoria Ocampo, and Gwendolyn Bennett. It addresses two questions: How did women writers in the early twentieth century tackle the entangled roots of political and cultural citizenship from which crises of belonging arise? How do their narrative negotiations of those crises inform modernist practice and modernity, then and now? The “N/native” moves between “born in” and “first in” in the context of the modern nation-state. In the dominant discourses of post-imperial as well as decolonizing nations, “Native” is relegated to Time (static or fetishized through nostalgia and romance). History is envisioned as active and contoured, associated with motion and progress, which the “native” inhabits and for whom citizenship is a political as well as a temporal attribute. The six authors’ identities as Native, settler, indigenous, immigrant, or native-citizen are formed from their gendered, racialized, and classed locations in their respective nations. Each author negotiates the intertwined strands of Time and History by mobilizing the “N/native” to reclaim citizenship (cultural-political belonging). This study reveals how their lineage, connections to land, experiences in learning (education), and their labor generate their narratives. The juxtaposition of the six writers keeps in focus the asymmetries in their responses to their times, and illustrates how relevant women’s/feminist production were then, and are in today’s versions of the same urgent debates about heightened nativisms and nationalisms.

Identity Negotiation in Multilingual Contexts: A Narrative Inquiry into Experiences of an African Immigrant High School Student

Abstract:Background/Context Inclusion of African immigrant youth voices in educational and research discourses remains rare despite the steady growth of this population in the United States over the past four decades. Consequently, the multilingual abilities of these youth remain typically unnoticed or ignored in the classroom, and little is specifically known about their histories, cultures, expectations, and achievements. Purpose Using the narrative inquiry approach and the Natural, Institutional, Discursive, Affinity, Learner, and Solidarity (NIDALS) theoretical lens, we explore the lived experiences of one African immigrant high school student in the midwestern United States. Research Design Using narrative inquiry, we qualitatively explored the lived cultural, racial, and ethnic identities and self-images experienced by a Ghanaian-born female high school student, Akosua (pseudonym), as she navigated and resisted identities ascribed to her in the midwestern U.S. Findings The student's narratives speak to issues of culture, identity, and self-image, as well as her literate life in multiple languages and literacy contexts in and out of school. The findings reveal narratives of ascribed identities, racialization, and perceived language hierarchies in the participant's daily life and indicate a need to challenge such narratives about African immigrant students and disrupt the reproduction of linguistic and racial inequality in the school system. Recommendations While school systems do follow state-sanctioned linguistic norms and ideologies, when educators draw on students’ experiences and funds of knowledge as resources already in the room in order to find ways of negotiating and disrupting language hierarchies and the ascribed identities they support, it allows all students, including multilinguals, to have their identity affirmed, even in school systems that have historically marginalized them. This, in turn, supports educational achievement, broadly realized, not only psychologically for all students but also economically and nationally for the country—a critical accomplishment in an era when educational quality in the U.S. is losing ground to foreign achievements.

Abstract:Akinleye discusses how issues of marginalization in the dance studio raised by prejudices against age, ethnicity and/or gender have shared lessons of resilience. From her own presence as an experienced, Black, female body in Western dance settings, the author looks at social and cultural theory to describe the older dancer as having many bodies. Akinleye draws on personal reflections gathered over a year of observations of herself taking dance classes, suggesting strategies for surviving racism in her youth as a Black ballerina offer modes for thriving in the face of exclusionary practices around aging in dance.

Abstract:The Counseling Psychologist, Ahead of Print. The present study fills a gap in the Arab American psychological literature by exploring the impact of racial ambiguity and legal invisibility on Arab American women's sense of belonging and well-being. This exploratory consensual qualitative research (CQR) investigation analyzed interview data from 13 nonveiled Arab American women. The interview probed their reactions to Arab Americans' legal invisibility in the United States, their perceptions of how White people and Black, Indigenous, and people of Color (BIPOC) perceived them racially, and examined their emotional responses and coping strategies. The study's results revealed participants' feelings of invisibility, invalidation, and hurt when they were not recognized as BIPOC, highlighting the participants' experience of exclusion. The results not only have implications for professional practice, education, and research but also for policy. In particular, this study lends support to Arab and Middle Eastern North African (MENA) advocacy efforts for formal recognition in the United States via representation in the U.S. Census and elsewhere.

Abstract:This article deploys the anachronistic term 'Negro dance' to query the relations between American modem dance and black concert dance from 1930, when the two practices emerged in tandem, to 1967-68 when 'black dance' replaced 'Negro dance' in common usage. During this period modern dance and Negro dance staged interdependent representations of blackness, whiteness and queerness on the American stage. These representations did not necessarily reduce to either the skin colour or the sexual orientation of the dancers. Rather, blackness, whiteness and queerness became perceptual constructs on stage, ways for linking physical bodies and social meanings. For most spectators, the visibility of blackness opposed the invisibility of whiteness. While queerness was visible to some spectators, it remained invisible to others. This larger argument is illustrated through a case study of Katherine Dunham's reception from the mid-1930s to the mid-1940s. During the heyday of the Popular Front, only a few spectators recognized Dunham's performance of diaspora. During the years of the Second World War her performance of diaspora became legible to a broad range of theatre-goers. At the same time some spectators came to perceive her performance of black sexual dissidence.

Abstract:For those who hold the text of feminine Blackness, mainstream British contemporary dance has historically been a place of misrepresentation, invisibility, and loss of authorship. This article outlines an original socio-intertextual framework that expands the possibilities of solo performance as a space to self-author feminine Blackness. I draw on my practice-based, autoethnographic, and theoretical investigations, including studio explorations, sharings, performances within mainstream contemporary dance settings, and autoethnographic reflection and analysis. I draw on notions of intertextuality (Barthes; Kristeva; Ott; Walter), Black feminist theory in literature and media discourse (hooks; Lorde; Bailey), and sociological theory concerning the presentation of self (Goffman) and articulations of the 'I' and 'Me' (Herbert Mead). This critical framework and practice methodology map out clear parameters in understanding how feminine Blackness is constructed, read, and valued within British contemporary dance. It suggests how solo performance can be a playground for navigating and reimagining feminine Blackness, and that the practice of self-authoring is crucial to the process of decolonising. This article is an offering to the journey of decolonisation; an act of solidarity that provides perspectives and tools to begin to untangle and rewrite what is inscribed as a consequence of enduring colonial perspectives within British contemporary dance.

Abstract:Starting with seminal work from Katherine McKittrick and Katherine McKittrick and the late Clyde Woods, this paper compares and contrasts articulations of justice as espoused by Black feminism, ecofeminism, and the movement for environmental justice. The utilization of an intersectional genealogical approach allows for examination of the ways in which these movements might serve as the ideological bases for a Black feminist spatial imagination and an intersectional environmental justice. A Black feminist spatial imagination is an orientation that accounts for the merger of frames around race, gender, and ecology; it serves as a unique departure from conventional Black feminist analysis by its particular attention to the construct of space in Black feminist epistemology. Analysis reveals that manifestos engage similar strategies around boundedness, an identification among a collective identity and the subject of reproductive justice and liberation as wresting control and self-determination of physical bodies. The final task is an outline of essential tenets for a singular notion of justice of a Black feminist spatial imagination which incorporates the spirit of all of three manifestos and expands current environmental justice discourse to include those ‘who know no one knows’ while highlighting Black women’s agency in environmentally degraded environments.

Abstract:Geographies of Identity: Narrative Forms, Feminist Futures explores identity and American culture through hybrid, prose work by women, and expands the strategies of cultural poetics practices into the study of innovative narrative writing. Informed by Judith Butler, Homi Bhabha, Harryette Mullen, Julia Kristeva, and others, this project further considers feminist identity politics, race, and ethnicity as cultural content in and through poetic and non/narrative forms. The texts reflected on here explore literal and figurative landscapes, linguistic and cultural geographies, sexual borders, and spatial topographies. Ultimately, they offer non-prescriptive models that go beyond expectations for narrative forms, and create textual webs that reflect the diverse realities of multi-ethnic, multi-oriented, multi-linguistic cultural experiences. Readings of Gertrude Stein’s A Geographical History of America, Renee Gladman’s Juice, Pamela Lu’s Pamela: A Novel, Claudia Rankine’s Don’t Let Me Be Lonely, Juliana Spahr’s The Transformation, Theresa Hak Kyung Cha’s Dictée, Gloria Anzaldúa’s Borderlands/La Frontera, and Layli Long Soldier’s WHEREAS show how alternatively narrative modes of writing can expand access to representation, means of identification, and subjective agency, and point to horizons of possibility for new futures. These texts critique essentializing practices in which subjects are defined by specific identity categories, and offer complicated, contextualized, and historical understandings of identity formation through the textual weaving of form and content.

Abstract:Race, ethnicity, and culture are central to human development and family life. However, early research pathologized these influences on African Americans. Pioneering scholars studying African American families challenged pathology-focused perspectives, laying the foundation for the strengths-focused culturally-anchored research that is now seen in the field. This article revisits this pioneering scholarship, rarely published in peer-reviewed journals, reintegrating them into the discourse on families so that their significance can be understood and recognized. Pioneering scholars offered nuanced theoretical frameworks, identified contextual and within-group variations, developed innovative methods to capture complexities and variation in African Americans' functioning, and presciently recognized researchers' positionality impacting research.

Abstract:Central to any anti-oppressive research endeavour is the importance of reflexivity and the genuine attempt from researchers to turn the research tools on themselves (Hermans, 2019). Beyond research, the social work profession has much to learn from the reflexive accounts of researchers. Issues of identity, language and culture are widely recognised as important when working with service users and carers in social work; however, this is much less the case when considering identities of social work practitioners. Starting with personal and professional positions of Black female and Deaf female social workers, this article reveals the reflexive journey of the Black female hearing researcher undertaking the research. The article takes an original approach to theory construction by introducing ‘ Africanist Sista-hood in Britain’ and marrying this with Deaf cultural discourse in the form of Deafhood, Deaf ethnicity and Deaf Gain, all of which make valuable contribution to existing debates in identity politics and the importance of self-naming and self-actualisation. Within the article the author discusses epistemological challenges in theory construction, data collection, language, transcription and dissemination, as they linked to power, privilege and the different forms this took within the research. The article makes a number of significant contributions. It introduces Africanist Sista-hood in Britain as a useful theoretical framework in research and at the same time encourages theoretical alliances across other marginalised groups. In discussing issues of knowledge production beyond existing hegemonic frames, it offers a broadening of the lens beyond the ways in which identity, culture and ethnicity are currently understood in the mainstream. In discussing Deaf cultural discourse and its influence on methodological choices it invites researchers to better engage with these issues from perspectives articulated by Deaf people.

Abstract:There is now a substantial literature on slavery yet few studies directly address the gendered nature of the slave trade. In this article, the author demonstrates how women’s experiences of the trade were contingent on conflicting European stereotypes of African women, their fertility and sexual vulnerability but, also, their gendered roles in African cultures. These gender differences influenced women’s resistance and survival strategies. The middle passage represented irreversible changes in slave women’s lives but important threads of continuity also existed across the Atlantic world. On the slave ship the ‘Daughters of injur’d Africk’ forged new bonds with fellow slaves and their cultural knowledge travelled with them. Women were seminal in reworking African culture on the slave plantation and actively resisted enslavement from the moment of capture to their harsh new lives in the Americas.
