Abstract:This article considers intelligent fuel cell/battery hybrid vehicles (FCHVs) that can make autonomous decisions at both the vehicle and powertrain levels. Since the vehicle and powertrain level dynamics are inherently integrated, we propose an integrated motion and powertrain model predictive control approach for intelligent FCHVs by jointly optimizing the vehicle acceleration and fuel cell current. The control goals are to achieve vehicle mobility, minimal hydrogen consumption, and battery state-of-charge maintenance within system constraints. The main challenge in an integrated control is that the electric motor can operate in both propelling and generating modes coupling with vehicle and powertrain states. This hybrid operation is handled by the mixed logical dynamical modeling resulting in a mixed integer nonlinear control problem. To relieve the possible heavy computational burden, two simplification approaches are proposed: hierarchical control and successive linearizations. Two standard driving cycles and a typical vehicle cruising scenario are employed to test the effectiveness of the proposed modeling and control algorithms. Simulation results show that the hierarchical linear control is more suitable for real-time applications with comparable control performance with that of the integrated control. However, additional constraints must be carefully designed to compensate for the ignored coupling dynamics and constraints.

Abstract:An optimal energy management strategy was designed based on the characteristics of typical fuel cell battery hybrid powertrains. An optimal global energy distribution strategy was obtained using a dynamic programming (DP) algorithm for representative driving cycles. These results were used to develop a fuzzy logic based real time control strategy for fuel cell hybrid powertrains. Simulations results and test-bed experiments show that the strategy controls the fuel cells always work in the high efficiency region to improve vehicle fuel economy.

Abstract:In order to maintain the battery SOC, the fuel cell power will fluctuate dramatically, as well as frequent start-stop, which will greatly increase the life attenuation of the fuel cell and reduce the durability. An optimization-based energy management strategy with a real-time model predictive control and pontryagin's maximum principle for FCHEV is proposed in this paper, both the fuel economy and the fuel cell durability are considered in the optimization. A novel model predictive control is studied to achieve energy distribution. After the calculation of predicted speed sequence through back propagation neural network, pontryagin's maximum principle is introduced to solve the optimal control problem in each prediction horizon and obtain the ideal control strategy. In addition, the fuel cell degradation model is introduced in the modeling process, the minimum power point of the fuel cell system is designed to improve the fuel economy and durability of the fuel cell. Compared with the rule-based strategy, the proposed MPC strategy has better performance to reduce the total equivalent hydrogen consumption, which can save up to 8.44% in the test case of the mid-size fuel cell passenger car while maintaining the stability of the battery's state of charge.

Abstract:An energy optimization control strategy for the Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) is developed in this paper to reduce the fuel consumption, on the premise of the operation demand, which makes the engine and motor working in the high efficiency operation area. The energy management model of Pontryagin's Minimum Principle (PMP) for the parallel hybrid vehicle is set up, the state of charge (SOC) and the output power of the battery are chosen as the state variable and control variable, respectively. The total fuel consumption during the HEV operation is considered as the objective function, and PMP is used to obtain the optimum solution. The simulation results verify the effectiveness of the developed control strategy, with which the higher output torque of the engine and the lower output torque and higher efficiency of the motor are achieved compared with the energy management strategy based on logic rule. Moreover, the 100-kilometer fuel consumption is reduced by 40%, and the fuel economy is greatly improved.

Abstract:A number of strategies for the power management of hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) are proposed in the literature. A key challenge is to achieve near-optimality while keeping the methodology simple. The Pontryagin's minimum principle (PMP) is suggested as a viable real-time strategy. In this brief, the global optimality of the principle under reasonable assumptions is described from a mathematical viewpoint. Instantaneous optimal control with an appropriate equivalent parameter for battery usage is shown to be possibly a global optimal solution under the assumption that the internal resistance and open-circuit voltage of a battery are independent of the state-of-charge (SOC). This brief also demonstrates that the optimality of the equivalent consumption minimization strategy (ECMS) results from the close relation of ECMS to the optimal-control-theoretic concept of PMP. In static simulation for a power-split hybrid vehicle, the fuel economy of the vehicle using the control algorithm proposed in this brief is found to be very close-typically within 1%-to the fuel economy through global optimal control that is based on dynamic programming (DP).

Abstract:In this paper, a new control strategy for power management of fuel-cell-battery hybrid vehicles is presented, which is a combination of an adaptive controller and a fuzzy logic controller. The proposed adaptive controller adjusts the power flow between the fuel cell and the Li-ion battery in real time and satisfies the system constraints. The fuzzy logic controller is designed to improve the performance of the adaptive controller under different driving conditions. Simulations are performed based on a real driving cycle data to validate the effectiveness of this new strategy.

Abstract:<p>The fuel cell hybrid vehicle provides an efficient and low-emission alternative for the internal combustion engine vehicle. The energy management strategy (EMS) commands the power split between the power sources and is crucial to the hybrid vehicles. In this work, we propose an adaptive EMS based on Pontryagin's Minimal Principle for a fuel cell/battery hybrid vehicle, in which the co-state adaptation is performed by driving cycle prediction. In order to improve the co-state estimation accuracy, an improved Markov based velocity prediction is proposed considering the driving behavior under different driving patterns. Moreover, the driving pattern is recognized online based on a support vector machine method, which is optimized by particle swarm optimization. We build a combined driving cycle to verify the effectiveness of the proposed strategy, simulation results under three cases show that the proposed strategy can foresee the driving behaviors and update the co-state reasonably. Comparing with the rule-based EMS, the proposed strategy achieves a better fuel economy with a hydrogen consumption reduction by 4% and a relatively low average power change rate of fuel cells. Moreover, it achieves a close performance to the offline optimal algorithms.</p>

Abstract:Power management is a vital technology to increase the economy of fuel cell hybrid vehicles. To overcome the deficiency of most existing optimization approaches, in this article, a modified model predictive control-based optimal strategy of power management is proposed for fuel cell hybrid vehicles. Besides, a partial least squares-based load estimation method is utilized to avoid the assumption of conventional model predictive control. Furthermore, an alternating direction multiplier method-based quadratic programming solver is also designed to avoid the ill-condition of the quadratic programming. Finally, the reliability and effectiveness of the proposed strategy are demonstrated by the simulation and experiments.

Abstract:For finding a balance between fuel economy and durability of fuel cell hybrid power systems, this article proposes an improved real-time energy management strategy (EMS) based on Pontryagin's minimum principle (IM-PMP). We introduce the fuel cell output change rate with weighted coefficient into the Hamiltonian function to limit frequent power fluctuations so as to improve the durability of the fuel cell. In addition, a real-time costate updating method is proposed for unknown driving conditions. This method determines the optimal value of costate according to the real-time state of charge (SOC), which can ensure the online implementation of the EMS and control the SOC of the lithium battery within a certain range. By constructing the hardware-in-the-loop experimental platform, the proposed strategy is compared with the finite state machine (FSM) strategy. Compared with FSM, the hydrogen consumption of the IM-PMP strategy is reduced by 10.1%, and the fuel cell operating stress is reduced by 38.3%. The SOC of the lithium battery is maintained at around 0.6. The experimental results verify the superiority of the proposed EMS.

The slow dynamic response of fuel cells has limited the development of fuel cell vehicles to a certain extent, and reasonable energy management strategies are one of the critical issues that need to be resolved to promote the industrialization of fuel cell vehicle. Based on the complex operating conditions of fuel cell patrol vehicles, this paper establishes a model of the vehicle and the component, exploring the impact of energy management strategies on vehicle performance. The simulation results indicate that Fuzzy logic control (FLC) causes significant fluctuations in fuel cell output power under both light and heavy load conditions. Pontryagin minimum principle (PMP) and Adaptive Pontryagin minimum principle (APMP) maintain a constant lower output power near a fixed value and change slightly according to demand. Comprehensively analyzing the two operating conditions, PMP and APMP can stably maintain State of charge (SOC) around the reference value and converge toward the reference value, and the SOC of the FLC strategy is generally lower than the reference value. Under light and heavy load conditions, the average efficiency of the APMP fuel cell system reaches 50.44% and 49.58%, respectively, which is similar to the PMP strategy and is respectively improved by 0.67% and 0.32% compared to the FLC strategy.

Abstract:An effective energy coordination strategy is pivotal for fuel cell hybrid vehicles (FCHVs), aiming to optimize the energy synergy between lithium-ion batteries and fuel cells. This serves as the foundation for the sustainable progress in clean energy transportation. This article introduces an energy management strategy designed for real-time applications, with a focus on ensuring the security, efficiency, and prolonged operation of FCHVs. Precisely, leveraging precise system modeling, this article integrates considerations for efficiency awareness, system health, and battery thermal penalties into a structured model predictive control framework. The designed framework utilizes sequential quadratic programming to derive optimal control sequences while operating within multiphysical constraints. Moreover, a deep learning algorithm is employed for velocity prediction, and the article explores the effects of network structure and input–output feature size on prediction accuracy. Ultimately, the proposed strategy is implemented under diverse operating conditions to validate its robustness and to demonstrate its effectiveness in comparison with existing real-time optimization method. In addition, contrasting experiments are conducted to examine the impact of different weights in the multiobjective function.

Abstract:The aim of energy management of the fuel cell battery hybrid system is to minimize the energy consumption while satisfying load demands. This paper proposes an energy management method for a hybrid energy system which consists of a proton exchange membrance fuel cell, two boost converters and a lithium-ion battery pack. The goal is to guarantee a proper current of the fuel cell so that the consumption of hydrogen is minimized with constraints on power and the state of charge. The necessary conditions for the minimal hydrogen consumption is derived by using Pontryagin's maximum principle. According to this optimization method, the optimal current reference of the fuel cell can be computed analytically by iteration. Compared with solving partial differential equations with the traditional variational method, the proposed method is computationally more efficient. Moreover, by adjusting the state of charge and the load demand, we guarantee that the actual battery current can keep up with the reference value. Simulation results validate the effectiveness of the proposed energy management algorithm.

Abstract:Fuel cell stack (FCS) is a practical power source for new energy vehicle applications, and fuel economy is a problem that many researchers are concerned about. In this paper, an adaptive real‐time control strategy aiming at improving fuel efficiency is proposed; the control purpose is to distribute the power requirement between the FCS and the battery to achieve good fuel economy. First, the FCS model is built according to experiment data, and in order to reflect the affection of the temperature to the proposed control strategy, the thermal model of the battery is established. Then the future power requirement is predicted via Bayes inference analysis. Based on the FCS model, the battery model, and the predicted power requirement, the real‐time control strategy is designed and solved with minimization principle optimization over the receding horizon. The proposed control strategy is validated both through simulation and hardware‐in‐loop (Hil) experiments on a 40 kW FCS. The results compared with the rule‐based (RB) strategy and the loss minimum strategy (LMS) show that the proposed control strategy can effectively reduce fuel consumption by 4%, and at the same time, it can help extend the life span of the battery by considering the temperature affection.

Abstract:A power management strategy based on an adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system is proposed to enhance the fuel economy of fuel cell-battery hybrid vehicle and increase the mileage of continuation of journey. The model of hybrid vehicle for fuel cell-battery structure is developed by electric vehicle simulation software advisor. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed strategy can satisfy the power requirement of four standard drive cycles and achieve the power distribution between fuel cell system and battery. The comprehensive comparisons with a power tracking control strategy which is widely adopted in advisor verify that the proposed strategy has better validity in terms of fuel economy in four standard drive cycles. Hence, the proposed strategy will take important effect for designing advanced power management system of hybrid vehicle.

Abstract:<p>This paper presents a real-time and approximately optimal energy management strategy (EMS) based on Pontryagin's minimum principle (PMP), considering both fuel economy and power source durability. To develop the target strategy, performance degradation models are built for two power sources: a proton exchange membrane fuel cell and a lithium ion battery. This study provides an online co-state updating method for uncertain driving cycles. The method allows the battery's state of charge to be controlled within a certain range and determines the nearly optimal hydrogen consumption. Furthermore, by incorporating a fuel cell power variation limiting factor with a weight coefficient into the PMP to suppress power changes, the durability of the fuel cell can be improved. The average daily operating cost (calculated based on the fuel consumption and power source degradation) is used to evaluate the trade-off between fuel economy and power source durability. Simulation results show that the fuel cell durability is improved with a slight increase in fuel consumption and battery degradation, and that the average daily operating cost is effectively reduced. A comparison with the results obtained by adopting a rule-based EMS and a dynamic programming-based EMS indicate the superiority of the proposed EMS.</p>

Abstract:This paper addresses the energy management strategy (EMS) for a fuel cell hybrid electric vehicle (FC-HEV). The purpose of this paper is to ensure an optimal power splitting between the fuel cell system (FCS) and the battery pack, taking into account the operating conditions of the FCS. The FCS is a multi-physics system, and consequently, its energetic performances depend on the operating conditions (i.e., temperature, gas relative humidity, gas stoichiometry, pressure and ageing). Specific techniques must be used to reach the best performances of the FCS. In this work, models are identified online by using the adaptive recursive least square (ARLS) method to seek a variation in the FCS performances. Then, an optimization algorithm is used on the updated model to find the best efficiency and power operating points. This process is used into an optimal EMS based on Pontryagin’s minimum principle, for a FC-HEV. The effectiveness of the proposed EMS is demonstrated by conducting studies on two FCSs with different levels of degradation.

This paper offers brief introduction of Minimum Principle, definition of specific problem, realization of this principle in Matlab environment and the final comparison of the fuel cost among Minimum Principle-based strategy, deterministic rule-based strategy and fuzzy rule-based strategy. The result suggest that Minimum Principle owns more potential for saving fuel.

Abstract:In this paper, an adaptive dynamic programming (ADP) based strategy for real-time energy control of parallel hybrid electric vehicles is presented. The aim is to develop a fuel-optimal control which is not relying on the priori knowledge of the future driving conditions (global optimal control), but only upon the current system operation. Adaptive dynamic programming is an on-line tuning method, which controls the system while simultaneously learning its characteristics in real time. A suboptimal energy control is then obtained with a proper definition of a cost function to be minimized at each time instant. The instantaneous cost function includes the fuel economy, emissions and the deviation of battery soc. Our approach guarantees an optimization of vehicle performance and an adaptation to driving conditions. Simulation results over standard driving cycles are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed stochastic approach. It was found that the obtained ADP control algorithm outperforms a traditional rule-based control strategy.

Abstract:To enhance the fuel efficiency of fuel cell hybrid electric vehicles (FCHEVs), we propose a hierarchical energy management strategy (HEMS) to efficiently allocate power to a hybrid system comprising a fuel cell and a battery. Firstly, the upper-layer supervisor employs a fuzzy fault-tolerant control and prediction strategy for the battery and fuel cell management system, ensuring vehicle stability and maintaining a healthy state of charge for both the battery and fuel cell, even during faults. Secondly, in the lower layer, dynamic programming and Pontryagin's minimum principle are utilized to distribute the necessary power between the fuel cell system and the battery. This layer also incorporates an optimized proportional-integral controller for precise tracking of vehicle subsystem set-points. Finally, we compare the economic and dynamic performance of the vehicle using HEMS with other strategies, such as the equivalent consumption minimization strategy and fuzzy logic control strategy. Simulation results demonstrate that HEMS reduces hydrogen consumption and enhances overall vehicle energy efficiency across all operating conditions, indicating superior economic performance. Additionally, the dynamic performance of the vehicle shows significant improvement.
