Abstract:To reduce the leaching potential, to prevent groundwater contamination and to maintain the efficacy of a pesticide, natural polysaccharides have received increasing attention due to their biocompatibility and useful biological reactivity for controlled release formulations (CRFs) of pesticides. In this paper, the toxicities of the chiral herbicide dichlorprop (DCPP) and its complexes with chitosan molecules (DCPP-CS) and chitosan nanoparticles (DCPP-NP) to two different green algae were determined and compared. The inhibition rates of DCPP, DCPP-CS and DCPP-NP were determined at 24, 48, 72, 96, 120, 144, 168 h, and the results show that (S)-DCPP was more toxic to Chlorella vulgaris than (R)-DCPP, while the (R)-DCPP was more toxic to Scenedesmus obliquus than (S)-DCPP. The study also found that the chiral selectivity of DCPP to Chlorella vulgaris and Scenedesmus obliquus could be changed when DCPP was complexed with chitosan molecules (CS) or chitosan nanoparticles (NP). For Chlorella vulgaris, the order of inhibition was (R)-DCPP-CS > (S)-DCPP-CS and (R)-DCPP-NP > (S)-DCPP-NP; for Scenedesmus obliquus, the order was (S)-DCPP-CS > (R)-DCPP-CS and (S)DCPP-NP > (R)-DCPP-NP. This phenomenon suggests that the enantioselective behaviors of chiral compounds might shift when interactions with other chiral receptors coexist in different biological environments. Additionally, chitosan molecules and chitosan nanoparticles also showed different toxicities, which could be ascribed to the difference in the physicochemical properties between CS and NP or the differences in the cell walls of the two fresh water green algae.
Effects of herbicide mixtures on freshwater microalgae with the potential effect of a safener

Abstract:Freshwater microalgae are primary producers and cosmopolitan species subjected to the effects of herbicides. In this work, the in vitro algal growth inhibitory effects of 11 agrochemicals (9 herbicides, 1 metabolite, and 1 safener) were quantified. Chemical compounds were applied singly and in specific mixtures. Three species were used in axenic condition: the green alga Desmodesmus subspicatus (Chodat), the diatoms Nitzschia palea (Kützing) W. Smith and Navicula pelliculosa (Kützing) Hilse. When exposed to single compounds, N. palea and N. pelliculosa were only sensitive to atrazine/desethylatrazine and the safener benoxacor (BE), respectively. D. subspicatus was equally sensitive to four herbicides including atrazine and its metabolite and significantly more sensitive to iodosulfuron-methyl-sodium (IODO). The mixture of these five compounds induced a significantly higher growth inhibition of about 1.5-fold than IODO alone, which could be attributed to the four other herbicides. The mixture of all compounds was twofold less toxic than IODO on D. subspicatus . A halogen atom is present in IODO as in the herbicides to which the safener BE − known to induce glutathione- S -transferases − is associated in agrochemical preparations. We then showed that IODO was less toxic when combined with non-toxic concentrations of BE. These results indicated that the toxicity of the most active herbicide studied was decreased by a non-herbicide compound present in agrochemical formulations of other herbicides. These results suggest the importance to take into account the chemistry and the mechanisms of action for each compound in a risk assessment approach of a complex mixture.

Abstract:Eutrophication with a large number of Microcystis aeruginosa commonly occurs worldwide, thereby threatening the aquatic ecosystem and human health. In this study, four kinds of algicides were tested to explore their influence on cell density and chlorophyll-a of M. aeruginosa. Results showed that aluminum silicate agent, which inhibited more than 90% cell growth compared with the control group, demonstrated the strongest inhibition effect immediately on M. aeruginosa growth. Furthermore, the production and release of microcystin (MC)-LR were investigated. Aluminum silicate, CuSO4, and Emma-11 were more effective than pyrogallic acid in disrupting the cells of M. aeruginosa, thereby increasing the extracellular MC-LR concentration. Aluminum silicate caused the highest extracellular MC-LR concentration of more than 45 mg·L–1. Biotoxicity was also detected to evaluate the environmental risks of MC-LR release, which were related to the usages of different algicides. Extracellular MC-LR concentration mostly increased when the biotoxicity of algae solution increased. The experiments were also designed to reveal the effects of physical conditions in riverways, such as natural sunlight, aeration and benthal sludge, on MC-LR degradation. These findings indicated that UV rays in sunlight, which can achieve a MC-LR removal efficiency of more than 15%, played an important role in MC-LR degradation. Among all the physical pathways of MC-LR removal, benthal sludge adsorption presented the optimal efficiency at 20%.

Abstract:New pesticide products are reviewed by the United States Environmental Protection Agency for possible effects to non-target aquatic organisms. The required toxicity data are for the active ingredient only, and fail to include toxicity of the mixture of other ingredients found in these pesticides. These ingredients may increase the toxicity of the active ingredient to non-target organisms. Our study compares the toxicity of two formulations of chelated copper algaecides with each other, and to a copper sulfate algaecide. We were particularly interested in the effects of a surfactant that is present in one of the formulations. We found that copper becomes less toxic to fish (e.g. fathead minnow 48-h LC50 = 0.90 mg/L) when it is chelated, providing an additional margin of safety to non-target fish compared to copper sulfate. However, inclusion of a surfactant to the formulation resulted in increased toxicity (e.g. fathead minnow 48-h LC50 = 0.30 mg/L).

Abstract:The effects of 40 herbicides with nine modes of action on the green alga Raphidocelis subcapitata were studied by 96-h acute toxicity tests. Results showed that the EC50 of the herbicides with respect to the photosynthetic processes of R. subcapitata ranged from 0.0007 to 4.2286mgL−1. Photosynthesis was the process of the green alga most sensitive to the tested herbicides. The most toxic herbicides were atrazine, ametryme, simazine, prometryne, cyanazine, isoproturon, chlorotoluron, diuron, methabenzthiazuron, and paraquat. The EC50 of the protoporphyrinogen oxidase inhibitor oxadiargyl, which was the parameter least sensitive to the herbicides tested in this study, was 42.5mgL−1. The descending order of the average acute toxicity to R. subcapitata of herbicides with regard to the nine modes of action was as follows: photosynthetic process>cell division>lipid synthesis, acetyl-coenzyme A carboxylase>acetolactate synthase> 5-enolpyruvyl-shikimate-3-phosphate synthase, glutamine synthase, hormone synthesis>protoporphyrinogen oxidase.

Abstract:Harmful algal blooms (HABs) and the invasion of smooth cordgrass (Spartina alterniflora) have become important environmental problems in intertidal zones of China, which caused serious damage on the coastal ecological systems. By using S. alterniflora as algaecide, this helps to utilize this invasive plant, in addition, is expected to help to control the expansion of S. alterniflora. The potential of S. alterniflora in HABs mitigation was investigated on controlling Phaeocystis globosa (haptophyceae) and Prorocentrum donghaiense (dinophyceae). The growth of both HABs species was significantly inhibited at high concentrations, and P. globosa was more sensitive than P. donghaiense. Furthermore, the extracts of S. alterniflora reduced the effective quantum yield, photosynthetic efficiency, and relative maximal electron transport rate of both algal species at high concentrations, which implies a disruption on their photosynthetic system. Flavonoids, which were previously known as antialgal chemicals, were found to be abundant in the extracts of S. alterniflora by UPLC-MS detection. Our results revealed that the potential of S. alterniflora as a novel antialgal agent for controlling HABs, simultaneously, resource utilization possibility for the invasive plant S. alterniflora.
The Effectiveness of Five Natural Products Against Three Species of Harmful Algae

Abstract:The effects of five natural products on the growth of three harmful algae species including Chattonella marina Hara et Chihara, Alexandrium tamarense Balech and Karenia mikimotoi (Miyake & Kominami ex Oda) G. Hansen & o. Moestrup were observed. Four products including epsilon-polylysine, betaine, stachydrine and berberine exhibited selectively inhibitory effects against the three algae. However, the other product chitosan had no obvious inhibition against the above algae. Berberine and epsilon-polylysine exhibited relatively higher inhibitory capability against C. marina, and betaine had the highest inhibitory effect against A. tamarense. While only berberine could effectively inhibit the growth of K. mikimotoi with LC50, 120 at 3.1 mg/L. The fast inhibitory effect against K. mikimotoi and environmental safety of berberine suggested that it might be a potential algaecide against K. mikimotoi.

Abstract:The enantioselective effects of chiral herbicides on aquatic organisms have received increasing attention. As one kind of freshwater algae responsible for most algal blooms, Microcystis aeruginosa can produce hepatotoxic microcystin and cause serious health concerns for drinking water. Thus, the effects of chiral herbicides on M. aeruginosa are of vital significance but poorly understood, especially as the structures of chiral herbicides become more complex. In this study, the enantioselective effects of four metolachlor enantiomers based on carbon center and axis chirality on M. aeruginosa were investigated for the first time at an enantiomeric level. The results of the investigation into algal growth inhibition, chlorophyll a content, and cell integrity indicated that ( S)-metolachlor [( S)-Met] was significantly more toxic than any other isomer. The toxicity ranking of different enantiomers at the highest concentration (15 mg/L) against M. aeruginosa was ( S)-Met > (α R,1' S)-Met > (α S,1' S)-Met > (α S,1' R)-Met > (α R,1' R)-Met, with (α S,1' S)-Met and (α R,1' S)-Met displaying a synergistic effect. Additionally, the Fe distribution in M. aeruginosa presented distinct enantioselectivity, which may contribute to the enantioselective toxicity of metolachlor. Furthermore, metolachlor upregulated the expression of genes mcyD and mcyH in an enantioselective manner, indicating that this herbicide can potentially promote the synthesis and efflux of microcystin, thus aggravating agricultural water contamination to different extents. Overall, this study will help to understand the ecotoxicity of metolachlor at a deeper level and provide theoretical insights into the enantioselective behaviors of metolachlor.
New insights into the harmful algae inhibition by Spartina alterniflora: Cellular physiology and metabolism of extracellular secretion

Abstract:This study investigated the response of three toxic harmful algal blooms (HABs) species, Heterosigma akashiwo, Chattonelia marina, and Alexandrium tamarense to coastal invasive plant, Spartina alterniflora. In this study, the growth of three HABs species were suppressed significantly by S. alterniflora extracts, showing a dose-response relationship. The raphidophyte II. akashiwo and C marina exhibited higher inhibitory response with EC50,7d decreased by 14% and 75% as compared to the dinoflagellate A. tamarense. C marina was the most sensitive among the three species. S. aliens fora extracts disrupted algal cellular integrity and photosynthesis. Furthermore, the extracellular organic matters were detected by fluorescence excitation-emission matrix. Algal metabolites, protein-like substances (tyrosine-like peak and tryptophan-like peak) decreased as time prolonged and the humic-like substances (UVA marine humic-like peak) increased when algal cells were exposed to S. alterniflora extracts. These results provide new insights to the inhibition mechanism of S. alterniflora extracts on HABs species. (C) 2020 Published by Elsevier B.V.
Treatment of the Red Tide Dinoflagellate Karenia Brevis and Brevetoxins Using USEPA-registered Algaecides.

Abstract:The effectiveness of USEPA-registered algaecides for managing algae in lakes and reservoirs has been extensively evaluated in laboratory studies, mesocosm studies and in situ treatment. However, the use of these algaecides in marine environments for the management of dinoflagellates and associated toxins remains largely unknown. Karenia brevis is a toxic dinoflagellate that causes red tides in the Gulf of Mexico. In this study, we investigated the efficacy of six USEPA-registered algaecides, three copper-based and three peroxide-based, on treating toxic K. brevis with a natural bloom density (1.79 x 107 cells/L). Our results indicate that the application of as low as 0.31-0.34 mg Cu/L led to a significant decrease of K. brevis cells within 24 h after treatment, while peroxide-based algaecides required a relatively higher concentration for the effective removal of K. brevis cells (4.89-7.08 mg H2O2/L), but still lower than maximum label rate. Total brevetoxin levels 72 h after treatment revealed that 1.00 mg Cu/L for Algimycin (R) PWF, 6.48 mg H2O2/L for PAK (R) 27 and 7.08 mg H2O2/L for Oxi-mycin (R) P5 had the greatest impact on decreasing toxin levels. The correlation analysis showed that brevetoxin reduction rate was significantly positively related with the peroxide-based algaecide exposure concentration, which is caused by the oxidation of hydroxyl radicals produced by hydrogen peroxide. The degradation dynamics of the three peroxide-based algaecides revealed that salinity, microorganisms and organic matter (>= 0.2 mu m) impact the stability of hydrogen peroxide, and Oximycin (R) P5 showed the highest stability among tested peroxide-based algaecides with a degradation rate of 0.467 mg/d in natural seawater. Hence, our laboratory work provided new insights into potential emergency treatment methods for immediate mitigation of K. brevis and brevetoxins. More work on the fate and persistence of algaecide active ingredients and phycotoxins, effects of site characteristics, and pilot studies on marine non-targets are still needed before safe application of this method for HABs in marine systems.
Comprehensive Assessment of Herbicide Toxicity on Navicula sp. Algae: Effects on Growth, Chlorophyll Content, Antioxidant System, and Lipid Metabolism

Abstract:This study investigated the effects of herbicide exposure on Navicula sp. (MASCC-0035) algae, focusing on growth density, chlorophyll content, antioxidant system, and lipid metabolism. Navicula cultures were exposed to different concentrations of atrazine (ATZ), glyphosate (Gly), and acetochlor (ACT) for 96 h. Results showed a significant decrease in cell numbers, with higher herbicide concentrations having the most noticeable impacts. For instance, Gly-G2 had reduced cell populations by 21.00% at 96 h. Chlorophyll content varied, with Gly having a greater impact on chlorophyll a compared to ATZ and ACT. Herbicide exposure also affected the antioxidant system, altering levels of soluble sugar, soluble protein, and reactive oxygen species (ROS). Higher herbicide rates increased soluble sugar content (e.g., ATZ, Gly, and ACT-G2 had increased by 14.03%, 19.88%, and 19.83%, respectively, at 72 h) but decreased soluble protein content, notably in Gly-G2 by 11.40%, indicating cellular stress. Lipid metabolism analysis revealed complex responses, with changes in free proline, fatty acids, and lipase content, each herbicide exerting distinct effects. These findings highlight the multifaceted impacts of herbicide exposure on Navicula algae, emphasizing the need for further research to understand ecological implications and develop mitigation strategies for aquatic ecosystems.

Abstract:Herbicide safeners are agrochemicals added to herbicide formulations to protect crops from herbicide damage without reducing the effectiveness of the herbicide against weeds. While safeners are typically structurally similar to their co-formulated herbicides, they are classified as "inert" in the United States, meaning they are not held to the same regulatory standards as the herbicides. This review systematically examines the toxicity of safeners, which is important given their large-scale global use and potential for exposure to wildlife, livestock, and humans. A systematic review of peer-reviewed literature identified only seven studies examining safener toxicity. Regulatory toxicity data, compiled from the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) database, included data for 9 of the 18 commercial safeners. Most safeners have low acute ecotoxicity and mammalian toxicity; however, chronic effects and the underlying mechanism are less clear. Benoxacor showed enantioselective metabolism and depletion by drug-metabolizing enzymes. In conclusion, despite the widespread use of safeners, significant knowledge gaps exist regarding their toxicity. More research is needed to fully characterize the potential risks of safeners to human health and the environment. Regulatory agencies should consider reclassifying safeners as active ingredients to ensure adequate toxicity testing and risk assessment.

Effect of Allelochemicals on Photosynthetic and Antioxidant Defense System of Ulva Prolifera.

Abstract:Ulva prolifera is a macroalgae that forms massive blooms, negatively impacting natural communities, aquaculture operations and recreation. The effects of the natural products, eugenol, β-myrcene, citral and nonanoic acid on the growth rate, antioxidative defense system and photosynthesis of Ulva prolifera were investigated as a possible control strategy for this harmful taxon. Negative effects on growth were observed with all four chemicals, due to the excessive production of reactive oxygen species and oxidative damage to the thalli. However, the response of U. prolifera under the four chemicals stress was different at the cellular level. β-myrcene, the most effective compound in terms of growth inhibition, induced oxidative stress as shown by the damage of total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) and the downregulation of the glutathione-ascorbate (GSH-ASA) cycle which inhibited the antioxidative system. This chemical also inhibited photosynthesis and photoprotection mechanisms in U. prolifera, resulting in growth limitation. In contrast, U. prolifera was less affected by the second tested chemical, eugenol, and showed no significant change on photosynthetic efficiency in the presence of the chemical. The inhibition effects of the third and fourth tested chemicals, nonanoic acid and citralon, on growth and on the antioxidant defense system in U. prolifera were inferior. These results provide a potential avenue for controlling green tides in the future.
Enantiomeric Environmental Behavior, Oxidative Stress and Toxin Release of Harmful Cyanobacteria Microcystis Aeruginosa in Response to Napropamide and Acetochlor.

Abstract:Harmful algal blooms have emerged as a worldwide issue. After concentrations of herbicides entering water, herbicides in water may pose ecological effects on them. The present study investigates the toxicity and environmental behavior of the herbicides, napropamide and acetochlor as enantiomers and as racemates on Microcystis aeruginosa which is the main specie known to produce hepatotoxins. S-napropamide/acetochlor are degraded faster than their corresponding isomer R-napropamide/acetochlor, with the latter more prone to accumulate in algal cells. Moreover, all the enantiomers did not undergo measurable racemization in the medium and algal cells. S-napropamide/acetochlor exhibited much higher toxicity than R-napropamide/acetochlor, with the S-enantiomer inducing a much greater production of antioxidant defense enzymes (superoxide dismutase (SOD) and malondialdehyde (MDA)) and microcystins (MC). SOD and MC increased after treatment with the herbicides and these increases were dependent on the exposure time, whereas MDA showed no apparent change. The information provided in this work will be useful for understanding the toxicity mechanism and environmental behaviors of different amide herbicides (napropamide and acetochlor) in aquatic environments at the enantiomeric level. Additionally, analysis of chiral herbicides in aquatic system needs more attention to aide in the environmental assessment of chiral herbicides.

Abstract:Freshwater eutrophication is an increasing ecological and public health concern. One of the major consequences of eutrophication is the formation of harmful algal blooms (HABs), a rapid population increase and accumulation of microorganisms, namely algae and cyanobacteria. In this project, we aim to investigate a nature based solution to this environmental hazard. Our approach consisted in the evaluation of the potential of aquatic plants to control the growth and viability of Chrysosporum ovalisporum, a cyanobacteria species associated with HABs and that produces toxic metabolites such as cylindrospermopsin. First, we carried out a screening with different plant species – Iris pseudacoros , Typha latifolia , Sparganium erectum , Alisma plantago-aquatica , Alisma lanceolatum , Nasturtium officinale , Landoltia punctata , Lemna minor and Wolffia arrhiza – for the allelopathic effect of their extracts on this cyanobacteria. For this purpose, methanol/water (70:30, v:v) mixture extracts were prepared and tested, at various concentrations, in C. ovalisporum cultures. Exposure to L. punctata extracts at the highest concentration tested (2 mg L −1 ) showed significant cellular abundance inhibitory effects on C. ovalisporum . Secondly, a microcosm system was assembled to evaluate the effects of co-growth of C. ovalisporum and L. punctata . In this experiment, we tested the effect of the presence of this plant on C. ovalisporum cell abundance, under a nutritional surplus and equivalent cyanobacterial light exposure in between test and control groups. The results confirmed the allelopathic effect of L. punctata on C. ovalisporum . This work demonstrates that the allelopathic properties of aquatic plants could be exploited to control the growth of harmful algae, and could be used to develop novel, eco-friendly and practical solutions, for treatment of water contaminated with C. ovalisporum .

Abstract:The occurrence of the market-leading glyphosate active ingredient in surface waters is a globally observed phenomenon. Although co-formulants in pesticide formulations were considered inactive components from the aspects of the required main biological effect of the pesticide, several studies have proven the high individual toxicity of formulating agents, as well as the enhanced combined toxicity of the active ingredients and other components. Since the majority of active ingredients are present in the form of chemical mixtures in our environment, the possible combined toxicity between active ingredients and co-formulants is particularly important. To assess the individual and combined phytotoxicity of the components, glyphosate was tested in the form of pure active ingredient (glyphosate isopropylammonium salt) and herbicide formulations (Roundup Classic and Medallon Premium) formulated with a mixture of polyethoxylated tallow amines (POEA) or alkyl polyglucosides (APG), respectively. The order of acute toxicity was as follows for Roundup Classic: glyphosate < herbicide formulation < POEA. However, the following order was demonstrated for Medallon Premium: herbicide formulation < glyphosate < APG. Increased photosynthetic activity was detected after the exposure to the formulation (1.5–5.8 mg glyphosate/L and 0.5–2.2 mg POEA/L) and its components individually (glyphosate: 13–27.2 mg/L, POEA: 0.6–4.8 mg/L), which indicates hormetic effects. However, decreased photosynthetic activity was detected at higher concentrations of POEA (19.2 mg/L) and Roundup Classic (11.6–50.6 mg glyphosate/L). Differences were demonstrated in the sensitivity of the selected algae species and, in addition to the individual and combined toxicity of the components presented in the glyphosate-based herbicides. Both of the observed inhibitory and stimulating effects can adversely affect the aquatic ecosystems and water quality of surface waters.

Ecotoxicological Evaluation of Safener and Antimicrobial Additives in Isoxaflutole-Based Herbicide Formulations

Abstract:The environmental load by isoxaflutole and its formulated herbicide products has increasingly become apparent because, after the ban of atrazine, isoxaflutole has become its replacement active ingredient (a.i.). Obtaining information regarding the fate of this a.i. in environmental matrices and its ecotoxicological effects on aquatic organisms is essential for the risk assessment of the herbicide. In this study, the effects of Merlin Flexx- and Merlin WG75 formulated isoxaflutole-based herbicide products and two selected additives (cyprosulfamide safener and 1,2-benzisothiazol-3(2H)-one antimicrobial agent) were investigated on Raphidocelis subcapitata in growth inhibition assays. In ecotoxicological tests, two conventional (optical density and chlorophyll-a content) and two induced fluorescence-based (Fv*/Fp: efficiency of the photosystem PSII and Rfd* changes in the observed ratio of fluorescence decrease) endpoints were determined by UV-spectrophotometer and by our FluoroMeter Module, respectively. Furthermore, dissipation of isoxaflutole alone and in its formulated products was examined by an HPLC-UV method. In ecotoxicological assays, the fluorescence-based Rfd* was observed as the most sensitive endpoint. In this study, the effects of the safener cyprosulfamide and the antimicrobial agent 1,2-benzisothiazol-3(2H)-one on R. subcapitata is firstly reported. The results indicated that the isoxaflutole-equivalent toxicity of the mixture of the isoxaflutole–safener–antimicrobial agent triggered lower toxicity (EC50 = 2.81 ± 0.22 mg/L) compared to the individual effect of the a.i. (EC50 = 0.02 ± 0.00 mg/L). The Merlin Flexx formulation (EC50 = 27.04 ± 1.41 mg/L) was found to be approximately 50-fold less toxic than Merlin WG75, which can be explained by the different chemical characteristics and quantity of additives in them. The additives influenced the dissipation of the a.i. in Z8 medium, as the DT50 value decreased by approximately 1.2- and 3.5-fold under light and dark conditions, respectively.

Abstract:Risk assessment of hydrophobic organic compounds (HOCs) is difficult because maintaining a well-defined exposure during aquatic toxicity testing is challenging due to the limited water solubility and various loss processes such as volatilization, biodegradation and sorption. Passive dosing techniques help to overcome these challenges by providing a well-controlled and solvent-free exposure. In this study, the algal growth inhibition test (DIN EN ISO 8692) was converted into a miniaturized passive dosing setting. For this purpose, biocompatible O-rings were used as substance reservoirs and loaded with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The growth inhibition of the microalgae Raphidocelis subcapitata induced by single PAHs (log KOW 3.24-5.91) was investigated. In addition, recreated PAH mixtures were tested representing field compositions of the pore water North Sea sediments. Some of the single PAHs revealed strong growth inhibiting effects on the algal growth, while the recreated mixture compositions had slightly lower effect on the growth inhibition in the highest concentrations. Overall, the toxicity of the PAHs generally increased with the maximum chemical activities (amax) of the PAHs and the inhibition data could be fitted with one maximum chemical activity response curve. Therefore, the miniaturized passive dosing approach appears as a promising practical and economical method that can be used for toxicity testing of the different trophic levels to improve comprehensive risk assessment.

Abstract:This study explores the use of algae for phycoremediation, focusing on how Chlorella sorokiniana and Anabaena laxa detoxify water contaminated with captan, a common fungicide. The efficiency of these species in absorbing captan and the associated biochemical changes were evaluated to assess their potential for environmental protection. Microalgae were exposed to captan concentrations of 15 and 30 mg/L, and various parameters, including captan uptake, chlorophyll (Chl) a, carotenoid levels, and changes in metabolic profiles (soluble carbohydrates, organic acids, amino acids, and fatty acids), were measured. Results showed Anabaena had a higher captan absorption capacity (141.7 µg/g at 15 mg/L and 239.3 µg/g at 30 mg/L) compared to Chlorella (74.43 µg/g and 162 µg/g). Increased captan uptake reduced the growth of both species, as indicated by lower Chl a levels. Both species accumulated osmo-protectants and antioxidants as defense mechanisms, with soluble sugars increasing by 83.49% in Chlorella and 68.87% in Anabaena, and carotenoids increasing by 60.42% and 46.24%, respectively. Principal component analysis revealed distinct species-level responses, with Anabaena showing greater tolerance. The study concludes that both species can effectively remediate captan, with Anabaena being more efficient, indicating their potential for mitigating agrochemical impacts in aquatic environments and promoting sustainable agriculture and water management.

Abstract:They not only directly impact aquatic organisms, but also indirectly impact these organisms by interacting with background toxins in the environment. Moreover, under realistic environmental conditions, algae, a natural food for aquatic organisms, may alter the toxicity pattern related to MPs. In this research, we first examined the toxicity of MPs alone, and their effect on the toxicity of lead (Pb) on Ceriodaphnia dubia (C. dubia), a model aquatic organism for toxicity survey. Then, we investigated the effect of algae on the combined toxicity of MPs and Pb. We observed that, MPs significantly increased Pb toxicity, which was related to the increase in soluble Pb concentration and the intake of Pb-loaded MPs, both of which increased the accumulation of Pb in C. dubia. The presence of algae mitigated the combined toxicity of MPs and Pb, although algae alone increased Pb accumulation. Therefore, the toxicity mitigation through algae uptake came from mechanisms other than Pb accumulation, which will need further investigation.
