Abstract:SignificanceCompressed ultrafast photography (CUP) is currently the world's fastest single-shot imaging technique. Through the integration of compressed sensing and streak imaging, CUP can capture a transient event in a single camera exposure with imaging speeds from thousands to trillions of frames per second, at micrometer-level spatial resolutions, and in broad sensing spectral ranges.AimThis tutorial aims to provide a comprehensive review of CUP in its fundamental methods, system implementations, biomedical applications, and prospect.ApproachA step-by-step guideline to CUP's forward model and representative image reconstruction algorithms is presented with sample codes and illustrations in Matlab and Python. Then, CUP's hardware implementation is described with a focus on the representative techniques, advantages, and limitations of the three key components—the spatial encoder, the temporal shearing unit, and the two-dimensional sensor. Furthermore, four representative biomedical applications enabled by CUP are discussed, followed by the prospect of CUP's technical advancement.ConclusionsCUP has emerged as a state-of-the-art ultrafast imaging technology. Its advanced imaging ability and versatility contribute to unprecedented observations and new applications in biomedicine. CUP holds great promise in improving technical specifications and facilitating the investigation of biomedical processes.

Abstract:Imaging ultrafast dynamic scenes has been long pursued by scientists. As a two-dimensional dynamic imaging technique, compressed ultrafast photography (CUP) provides the fastest receive-only camera to capture transient events. This technique is based on three-dimensional image reconstruction by combining streak imaging with compressed sensing (CS). However, the image quality and the frame rate of CUP are limited by the CS-based image reconstruction algorithms and the inherent temporal and spatial resolutions of the streak camera. Here, we report a new method to improve the temporal and spatial resolutions of CUP. Our numerical simulation and experimental verification show that by using a multi-encoding imaging method, both the image quality and the frame rate of CUP can be significantly improved beyond the intrinsic technical parameters. Importantly, the temporal resolution by our scheme can break the limitation of the streak camera. Therefore, this new technology has potential benefits in many applications that require the ultrafast dynamic scene image with high temporal and spatial resolutions.

Abstract:Compressed ultrafast photography (CUP) is the fastest receive-only single-shot imaging technique up to now. By combining compressed sensing and streak imaging, CUP is able to capture ultrafast dynamics in a single shot. As a powerful tool for researching ultrafast phenomena, it has been widely applied in lots of areas. To meet the demand for more precise dynamics information and higher dimension in some application, many improvements have been conduct in CUP. For example, we have raised total variation-block match 3D filter algorithm and augmented Lagrange-deep learning hybrid algorithm to improve the reconstructed image quality of CUP, and set up a stereo-volumetric CUP system to capture 5 dimension dynamic information in a single shot. Besides, we have also developed another single-shot ultrafast optical imaging technique, chirped spectral mapping ultrafast photography (CSMUP), which utilized the spectral-temporal mapping to exact temporal information from hyperspectral image.

Abstract:Compressed ultrafast photography (CUP) is currently the fastest receive-only ultrafast imaging technique with snapshot. CUP can capture non-repetitive transient events through three-dimensional (3D) image reconstruction based on a compressed sensing (CS) algorithm. However, CUP is a lossy imaging technique via image encoding and decoding, so how to further improve the image reconstruction accuracy has always been a goal pursued by scientists. Here, we develop a novel design of multichannel-coupled CUP (i.e. MC-CUP) to improve the image reconstruction accuracy. MC-CUP can not only increase the sampling rate, but also keep the snapshot of CUP. To demonstrate the advantage of MC-CUP in the image reconstruction accuracy, we measure a spatially modulated picosecond laser pulse and a 3D stepped structure, and these experimental results confirm that MC-CUP can significantly improve the spatial and temporal resolutions compared to CUP. This study will further promote the practical applications of CUP in ultrafast imaging, especially for biomedical imaging with high spatial resolution.

Abstract:Compressed ultrafast photography (CUP) has the highest imaging speed and sequence depth in capturing ultrafast nonrepeatable or unstable dynamic events with snapshots. However, due to the Coulomb interaction of electrons in a streak camera, it is difficult for the imaging speed of CUP to break the speed limit of 10(12) frames/s. Here, we propose a molecular-alignment-assisted CUP (MACUP) scheme by introducing a gas-phase temporal-spatial converter with all-optical deflection imaging into conventional CUP. Based on our simulation of a carbon dioxide molecular deflector, combined with point-spread restrictions in imaging, MACUP is able to achieve an imaging speed beyond 180x10(12) frames/s and a sequence depth of about 300 frames in a single exposure. To demonstrate the feasibility of MACUP, we simulate the spatiotemporal intensity measurement of a chirped femtosecond laser pulse and study the image reconstruction accuracy in the intensity and wavelength evolutions. These results show that MACUP is a promising single-shot ultrafast optical imaging strategy to unravel unprecedented dynamics in ultrafast atomic and molecular optics.

Abstract:<p>Compressed ultrafast photography (CUP) is an emerging potent technique that allows imaging a nonrepeatable or difficult‐to‐produce transient event in a single shot. Despite many recent advances, existing CUP techniques operate only at visible and near‐infrared wavelengths. In addition, spatial encoding via a digital micromirror device (DMD) in CUP systems often limits its field of view and imaging speeds. Finally, conventional reconstruction algorithms have limited control of the reconstruction process to further improve the image quality in the recovered <math>(x,y,t)</math> datacubes of the scene. To overcome these limitations, this article reports a single‐shot UV‐CUP that exhibits a sequence depth of up to 1500 frames with a size of 1750 × 500 <math>(x,y)</math> pixels at an imaging speed of 0.5 trillion frames per second. A patterned photocathode is integrated into a streak camera, which overcomes the previous restrictions in DMD‐based spatial encoding and improves the system's compactness. Meanwhile, the plug‐and‐play alternating direction method of multipliers algorithm is implemented to CUP's image reconstruction to enhance reconstructed image quality. UV‐CUP's single‐shot ultrafast imaging ability is demonstrated by recording UV pulses transmitting through various spatial patterns. UV‐CUP is expected to find many applications in both fundamental and applied science.</p>

Abstract:We present single-shot real-time video recording of light scattering dynamics by second-generation compressed ultrafast photography (G2-CUP). Using G2-CUP at 100 billion frames per second, in a single camera exposure, we experimentally captured the evolution of the light intensity distribution in an engineered thin scattering plate assembly. G2-CUP, which implements a new reconstruction paradigm and a more efficient hardware design than its predecessors, markedly improves the reconstructed image quality. The ultrafast imaging reveals the instantaneous light scattering pattern as a photonic Mach cone. We envision that our technology will find a diverse range of applications in biomedical imaging, materials science, and physics.

Abstract:Real-time imaging of countless femtosecond dynamics requires extreme speeds orders of magnitude beyond the limits of electronic sensors. Existing femtosecond imaging modalities either require event repetition or provide single-shot acquisition with no more than 1013 frames per second (fps) and 3 × 102 frames. Here, we report compressed ultrafast spectral photography (CUSP), which attains several new records in single-shot multi-dimensional imaging speeds. In active mode, CUSP achieves both 7 × 1013 fps and 103 frames simultaneously by synergizing spectral encoding, pulse splitting, temporal shearing, and compressed sensing—enabling unprecedented quantitative imaging of rapid nonlinear light-matter interaction. Abstract:The compressive ultrafast photography (CUP) has achieved real-time femtosecond imaging based on the compressive-sensing methods. However, the reconstruction performance usually suffers from artifacts brought by strong noise, aberration, and distortion, which prevents its applications. We propose a deep compressive ultrafast photography (DeepCUP) method. Various numerical simulations have been demonstrated on both the MNIST and UCF-101 datasets and compared with other state-of-the-art algorithms. The result shows that our DeepCUP has a superior performance in both PSNR and SSIM compared to previous compressed-sensing methods. We also illustrate the outstanding performance of the proposed method under system errors and noise in comparison to other methods.

Abstract:The spatial, temporal, and spectral information in optical imaging play a crucial role in exploring the unknown world and unencrypting natural mysteries. However, the existing optical imaging techniques can only acquire the spatiotemporal or spatiospectral information of the object with the single-shot method. In this talk, I’d like to introduce a hyperspectrally compressed ultrafast photography (HCUP) that can simultaneously record the spatial, temporal, and spectral information of the object. In our HCUP, the dynamical spatial resolution is 1.26 lp/mm in the horizontal direction and 1.41 lp/mm in the vertical direction, the temporal frame interval is 2 ps, and the spectral frame interval is 1.72 nm. Based on our HCUP, we realized the spatiotemporal-spatiospectral four-dimensional optical imaging of the chirped picosecond laser pulse and the photoluminescence dynamics. It can be expected that HCUP is flexible to couple to a variety of imaging modalities, including microscopes and telescopes, which enable recording the object at the spatial scales from cellular organelles to galaxies. Considering the powerful function of HCUP in optical imaging, it will open a new route in related application areas.

Abstract:Featuring high frame rate and large sequence depth in a single shot, compressed ultrafast photography (CUP) has emerged as an outstanding tool for observing ultrafast phenomena, especially those unrepeatable or irreversible ones. However, the lower image quality in CUP due to high data compressive ratio has always been a tough issue, hampering its further applications in capturing the transient scenes with fine structural information. To overcome this disadvantage in CUP, here we report a multimodal fusion-based compressed ultrafast photography to achieve high-fidelity ultrafast imaging, termed MF-CUP. MF-CUP simultaneously records the dynamic scenes with three different imaging models, involving CUP, transient imaging and spatiotemporal integration imaging. Attributed to the joint acquisition of the dynamic scenes from different imaging models and the multimodal fusion image reconstruction algorithm enabled by untrained neural network, MF-CUP acquires the higher fidelity in both spatial and temporal domains compared with traditional CUP. Both the simulation and experimental results demonstrate that MF-CUP can effectively enhance the accuracy and quality of reconstructed images. Given this high-fidelity imaging ability of MF-CUP, it will provide a powerful tool for the detection of ultrafast dynamics with fine details.

Abstract:The compressed ultrafast photography (CUP) can capture non-repetitive time-evolving events at 7 x 10(13) fps, which is anticipated to find a diverse range of applications in physics, biomedical imaging, and materials science. The feasibility of diagnosing ultrafast phenomenon of Z-pinch by using the CUP has been analyzed in this article. Specifically, a dual-channel CUP design has been adopted for acquiring high quality reconstructed images and the strategies of identical masks, uncorrelated masks, and complementary masks have been compared. Furthermore, the image of the first channel was rotated by 90?degrees to balance the spatial resolution between the sweep direction and the non-sweep direction. Both five synthetic videos and two simulated Z-pinch videos were chosen as the ground truth to validate this approach. The average peak signal to noise ratio of the reconstruction results is 50.55 dB for the self-emission visible light video and 32.53 dB for the laser shadowgraph video with unrelated masks (rotated channel 1). The simulation results show that the time-space-evolving process of plasma distribution can be well retold, and the phenomenon of plasma instability can be accurately diagnosed by the dual-channel CUP with unrelated masks (rotated channel 1). This study may promote the practical applications of the CUP in the field of accelerator physics.

Abstract:Abstract Simultaneous and efficient ultrafast recording of multiple photon tags contributes to high-dimensional optical imaging and characterization in numerous fields. Existing high-dimensional optical imaging techniques that record space and polarization cannot detect the photon’s time of arrival owing to the limited speeds of the state-of-the-art electronic sensors. Here, we overcome this long-standing limitation by implementing stereo-polarimetric compressed ultrafast photography (SP-CUP) to record light-speed high-dimensional events in a single exposure. Synergizing compressed sensing and streak imaging with stereoscopy and polarimetry, SP-CUP enables video-recording of five photon tags ( x, y, z : space; t : time of arrival; and ψ : angle of linear polarization) at 100 billion frames per second with a picosecond temporal resolution. We applied SP-CUP to the spatiotemporal characterization of linear polarization dynamics in early-stage plasma emission from laser-induced breakdown. This system also allowed three-dimensional ultrafast imaging of the linear polarization properties of a single ultrashort laser pulse propagating in a scattering medium.

Abstract:Acquiring ultrafast and high spectral resolution optical images is key to measure transient physical or chemical processes, such as photon propagation, plasma dynamics, and femtosecond chemical reactions. At a trillion Hz frame rate, most ultrafast imaging modalities can acquire only a limited number of frames. Here, we present a compressed ultrafast spectral-temporal (CUST) photographic technique, enabling both an ultrahigh frame rate of 3.85 trillion Hz and a large frame number. We demonstrate that CUST photography records 60 frames, enabling precisely recording light propagation, reflection, and self-focusing in nonlinear media over 30 ps. CUST photography has the potential to further increase the frame number beyond hundreds of frames. Using spectral-temporal coupling, CUST photography can record multiple frames with a subnanometer spectral resolution with a single laser exposure, enabling ultrafast spectral imaging. CUST photography with high frame rate, high spectral resolution, and high frame number in a single modality offer a new tool for observing many transient phenomena with high temporal complexity and high spectral precision.

Abstract:Compressed ultrafast photography (CUP) can capture irreversible or difficult-to-repeat dynamic scenes at the imaging speed of more than one billion frames per second, which is obtained by compressive sensing-based image reconstruction from a compressed 2D image through the discretization of detector pixels. However, an excessively high data compression ratio in CUP severely degrades the image reconstruction quality, thereby restricting its ability to observe ultrafast dynamic scenes with complex spatial structures. To address this issue, a discrete illumination-based CUP (DI-CUP) with high fidelity is reported. In DI-CUP, the dynamic scenes are loaded into an ultrashort laser pulse train with controllable sub-pulse number and time interval, thus the data compression ratio, as well as the overlap between adjacent frames, is greatly decreased and flexibly controlled through the discretization of dynamic scenes based on laser pulse train illumination, and high-fidelity image reconstruction can be realized within the same observation time window. Furthermore, the superior performance of DI-CUP is verified by observing femtosecond laser-induced ablation dynamics and plasma channel evolution, which are hardly resolved in the spatial structures using conventional CUP. It is anticipated that DI-CUP will be widely and dependably used in the real-time observations of various ultrafast dynamics.

Next, an intensity threshold is determined based on the similarity between the temporally projected image of the reconstructed datacube and the time-unsheared image. Both simulation and experimental studies show that the SIC reconstruction improves the spatial resolution, contrast, and general quality of the reconstructed image.

Abstract:The spatiotemporal measurement of the ultrashort laser pulses is of great significance in the diagnosis of the instrument performance and the exploration of the laser and matter interaction. In this work, we report an advanced compressed ultrafast photography (CUP) technique to measure the spatiotemporal intensity distribution of the picosecond laser pulses with a single shot. This CUP technique is based on a three-dimensional image reconstruction strategy by employing the random codes to encode the space-time-evolving laser pulse and decode it based on a compressed sensing (CS) algorithm. In our CUP system, the measurable laser wavelength depends on the spectral response of the streak camera, which can cover a wide range from ultraviolet (200 nm) to near infrared (850 nm). Based on the CUP system we develop, we successfully measure the spatiotemporal intensity evolutions of some typical laser pulses, such as the 800 nm picosecond laser pulse, the 800 and 400 nm two-color picosecond laser pulses and the supercontinuum picosecond laser pulse. These experimental results show that the CUP technique can well characterize the spatiotemporal intensity information of the picosecond laser pulses. Moreover, this technique has the remarkable advantages with the single shot measurement and without the reference laser pulse.

Abstract:Abstract High-speed optical imaging is an indispensable technology for blur-free observation of fast transient dynamics in virtually all areas including science, industry, defense, energy, and medicine. High temporal resolution is particularly important for microscopy as even a slow event appears to occur “fast” in a small field of view. Unfortunately, the shutter speed and frame rate of conventional cameras based on electronic image sensors are significantly constrained by their electrical operation and limited storage. Over the recent years, several unique and unconventional approaches to high-speed optical imaging have been reported to circumvent these technical challenges and achieve a frame rate and shutter speed far beyond what can be reached with the conventional image sensors. In this article, we review the concepts and principles of such ultrafast optical imaging methods, compare their advantages and disadvantages, and discuss an entirely new class of applications that are possible using them.
