Abstract:Landfills are likely to be important reservoirs of antibiotics and antibiotic resistant genes (ARGs) as they receive unused and unwanted antibiotics and ARGs in municipal solid waste (MSW). The distribution, transportation and dynamics of antibiotics and ARGs in landfills remain largely unknown. In the present study, 3 antibiotics – sulfamethoxazole (SMX), tetracycline (TC), and oxytetracycline (OTC) – and their related ARGs (sulI and tetO) were quantified in 51 refuse samples from different depths at 8 locations within a large-scale landfill in central China. The average concentration of OTC was the highest, up to 100.9±141.81μg/kg (dw, n=48), followed by TC (63.8±37.7μg/kg, n=40), and SMX (47.9±8.1μg/kg, n=30). Both sulI and tetO were detected in all samples. Of the ARGs, sul1 (−3.06±1.18, n=51, log10 ARGs/16SrDNA) was more abundant than tetO (−4.37±0.97) in all refuse samples (p<0.05). Both sulI and tetO negatively correlated to refuse age, suggesting they are attenuated during landfill stabilization. OTC and TC positively correlated to tetO (r=0.41, p<0.01) and sulI (r=0.29, p=0.04), respectively. Chemical conditions (e.g. moisture content and nitrate concentrations) within the refuse correlated to antibiotics and ARGs suggesting environmental factors impact the distribution of antibiotics and ARGs in landfill matrix. This study is the first comprehensive in situ landfill study to connect the concentrations of antibiotic residues to ARGs.
Microplastics enrichment characteristics of antibiotic resistance genes and pathogens in landfill leachate

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) pollution is a pressing environmental issue for aquatic ecosystems. Landfill leachate is an important contributor of MPs and antibiotic resistant genes (ARGs). However, there are few studies on the colonization of ARGs and pathogens on MPs in leachate. This study conducted incubation experiments with polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polypropylene (PP) MPs in landfill leachate which were about 3–5 years old (PL) and 5–10 years old (AL). After incubation, the bacterial cells colonized and grew on the surface of MPs, inducing the increase of oxygenated oxygen functional groups (e.g., hydroxyl, carbonyl) on the MPs surface. Real-time PCR indicated that MPs selectively enriched ARGs, such as genes tetM , tetC , mcr-1 , aac(6′)-Ib-cr , blaTEM and blaSHV in leachate. The diversity of bacterial communities on MPs was significantly increased in AL leachate, but decreased in PL leachate. The differences in bacterial communities in MPs biofilms were related to the type of MPs. Compared with AL leachate, the abundance of Chloroflexi increased by 15.7% on the PET, and the abundance of Acidobacteriota increased by 6.23 fold on the PP. The abundance of Firmicutes increased from 20.7% in PL leachate to 65.8% and 60.7% on PET and PP, respectively. Additionally, pathogens were observed to be more abundant on MPs compared to leachate. In particular, pathogens ( Staphylococcus , Streptococcus , Enterobacter and Rhodococcus ) associated with sul1 and sul2 were generally present at higher levels on MPs than in the surrounding leachate. These results provide significant implications for understanding the health risk of MPs in the environment.

Abstract:Plastic debris such as microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPTs), along with antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), are pervasive in the environment and are recognized as significant global health and ecological concerns. Micro-/nano-plastics (MNPs) have been demonstrated to favor the spread of ARGs by enhancing the frequency of horizontal gene transfer (HGT) through various pathways. This paper comprehensively and systematically reviews the current study with focus on the influence of plastics on the HGT of ARGs. The critical role of MNPs in the HGT of ARGs has been well illustrated in sewage sludge, livestock farms, constructed wetlands and landfill leachate. A summary of the performed HGT assay and the underlying mechanism of plastic-mediated transfer of ARGs is presented in the paper. MNPs could facilitate or inhibit HGT of ARGs, and their effects depend on the type, size, and concentration. This review provides a comprehensive insight into the effects of MNPs on the HGT of ARGs, and offers suggestions for further study. Further research should attempt to develop a standard HGT assay and focus on investigating the impact of different plastics, including the oligomers they released, under real environmental conditions on the HGT of ARGs.
Antibiotic resistome in landfill leachate and impact on groundwater

Abstract:Landfill leachate is a hotspot in antibiotic resistance development. However, little is known about antibiotic resistome and host pathogens in leachate and their effects on surrounding groundwater. Here, metagenomic sequencing was used to explore profiles, host bacteria, environmental risks and influencing factors of antibiotic resistome in raw and treated leachate and surrounding groundwater of three landfills. Results showed detection of a total of 324 antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). The ARGs conferring resistance to multidrug (8.8 %-25.7 %), aminoglycoside (13.1 %-39.2 %), sulfonamide (10.0 %-20.9 %), tetracycline (5.7 %-34.4 %) and macrolide-lincosamide-streptogramin (MLS, 5.3 %-29.5 %) were dominant in raw leachate, while multidrug resistance genes were the major ARGs in treated leachate (64.1 %-83.0 %) and groundwater (28.7 %-76.6 %). Source tracking analysis suggests non-negligible influence of leachate on the ARGs in groundwater. The pathogens including Acinetobacter pittii, Pseudomonas stutzeri and P. alcaligenes were the major ARG-carrying hosts. Variance partitioning analysis indicates that the microbial community, abiotic variables and their interaction contributed most to the antibiotic resistance development. Our results shed light on the dissemination and driving mechanisms of ARGs from leachate to the groundwater, indicating that a comprehensive risk assessment and efficient treatment approaches are needed to deal with ARGs in landfill leachate and nearby groundwater. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPLICATIONS: Antibiotic resistance genes are found abundant in the landfill sites, and these genes could be disseminated into groundwater via leaching of wastewater and infiltration of leachate. This results in deterioration of groundwater quality and human health risks posed by these ARGs and related pathogens. Thus measures should be taken to minimize potential negative impacts of landfills on the surrounding environment.

Abstract:Microplastics can not only serve as vectors of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), but also they and even nanoplastics potentially affect the occurrence of ARGs in indigenous environmental microorganisms, which have aroused great concern for the development of antibiotic resistance. This article specifically reviews the effects of micro/nanoplastics (concentration, size, exposure time, chemical additives) and their interactions with other pollutants on environmental ARGs dissemination. The changes of horizontal genes transfer (HGT, i.e., conjugation, transformation and transduction) of ARGs caused by micro/nanoplastics were also summarized. Further, this review systematically sums up the mechanisms of micro/nanoplastics regulating HGT process of ARGs, including reactive oxygen species production, cell membrane permeability, transfer-related genes expression, extracellular polymeric substances production, and ARG donor-recipient adsorption/contaminants adsorption/biofilm formation. The underlying mechanisms in changes of bacterial communities induced by micro/nanoplastics were also discussed as it was an important factor for structuring the profile of ARGs in the actual environment, including causing environmental stress, providing carbon sources, forming biofilms, affecting pollutants distribution and environmental factors. This review contributes to a systematical understanding of the potential risks of antibiotic resistance dissemination caused by micro/nanoplastics and provokes thinking about perspectives for future research and the management of micro/nanoplastics and plastics.
Microplastics exacerbate co-occurrence and horizontal transfer of antibiotic resistance genes

Abstract:Microplastic pollution is a rising environmental issue worldwide. Microplastics can provide a niche for the microbiome, especially for antibiotic-resistant bacteria, which could increase the transmission of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). However, the interactions between microplastics and ARGs are still indistinct in environmental settings. Microplastics were found to be significantly correlated with ARGs (p < 0.001), based on the analysis of samples taken from a chicken farm and its surrounding farmlands. Analysis of chicken feces revealed the highest abundance of microplastics (14.9 items/g) and ARGs (6.24 x108 copies/g), suggesting that chicken farms could be the hotspot for the co-spread of microplastics and ARGs. Conjugative transfer experi-ments were performed to investigate the effects of microplastic exposure for different concentrations and sizes on the horizontal gene transfer (HGT) of ARGs between bacteria. Results showed that the microplastics significantly enhanced the bacterial conjugative transfer frequency by 1.4-1.7 folds indicating that microplastics could aggravate ARG dissemination in the environment. Potential mechanisms related to the up-regulation of rpoS, ompA, ompC, ompF, trbBp, traF, trfAp, traJ, and down-regulation of korA, korB, and trbA were induced by microplastics. These findings highlighted the co-occurrence of microplastics and ARGs in the agricultural environment and the exacerbation of ARGs' prevalence via rising the HGT derived from microplastics.

Abstract:Although the fates of microplastics (0.1–5 mm) in marine environments and freshwater are increasingly studied, little is known about their vector effect in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Previous studies have evaluated the accumulation of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) on microplastics, but there is no direct evidence for the selection and horizontal transfer of ARGs on different microplastics in WWTPs. Here, we show biofilm formation as well as bacterial community and ARGs in these biofilms grown on four kinds of microplastics via incubation in the aerobic and anaerobic tanks of a WWTP. Microplastics showed differential capacities for bacteria and ARGs enrichment, differing from those of the culture environment. Furthermore, ARGs in microplastic biofilms were horizontally transferred at frequencies higher than those in water samples in both tanks. Therefore, microplastics in WWTPs can act as substrates for horizontal transfer of ARGs, potentially causing a great harm to the ecological environment and adversely affecting human health.

Abstract:Landfill leachate, a highly concentrated organic wastewater containing diverse microorganisms and various heavy metals, has become an important reservoir of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). In this study, a total of 203 unique ARGs and 10 mobile genetic elements (MGEs) were identified from collected landfill leachate and groundwater. The number and abundance (normalized and absolute) of antibiotic resistome in effluent of leachate treatment plants decreased significantly compared to influent. The abundance of ARGs in groundwater increased as the distance from the leachate basin decreased. Fast expectation-maximization microbial source tracking (FEAST) showed that up to 96 % of ARGs in groundwater (GW3) may originate from nearby leachate, suggesting that ARGs in leachate can penetrate and spread into the groundwater environment. A significant correlation between ARGs and bacterial communities was identified. Together with network analysis showing the 12 bacterial taxa co-occurring with seven classes of antibiotic-associated ARGs, our results revealed the diverse potential microbial hosts of ARGs in water samples around the landfill sites. Heavy metals, bacterial community and MGEs were the driving factors shaping the ARGs patterns in the water samples, with their interactions explaining 57 % of ARGs variations. Our results provide an understanding of the distribution and dissemination of ARGs from landfill leachate to the nearby groundwater and suggest a comprehensive impact assessment of ARGs in aquatic environments of landfills.

Abstract:<p>Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and microplastics in the environment are of great public concern due to their potential risk to human health. Microplastics can form distinct bacterial communities and absorb pollutants from the surrounding environment, which provide potential hosts and exert possible selection pressure of ARGs. We provide a practical evaluation of the scientific literature regarding this issue. The occurrence and transport of ARGs on microplastics in wastewater treatment plants, aquatic, terrestrial, and air environments were summarized. Selective enrichment of ARGs and antibiotic resistance bacteria on microplastics have been confirmed in different environments. Aggregates may be crucial to understand the behavior and transport of ARGs on microplastics, especially in the aquatic and terrestrial environment. Microplastics could be a carrier of ARGs between the environment and animals. Accumulation of pollutants and dense bacterial communities on microplastics provide favorable conditions for higher transfer rate and evolution of ARGs. More studies are still needed to understand the enrichment, transport, and transfer of ARGs on microplastics and provide a fundamental basis for evaluating their exposure health risk to humans.</p>

Alteration of the migration trajectory of antibiotic resistance genes by microplastics in a leachate activated sludge system

Abstract:The environmental behavior of emerging contaminants of microplastics (MPs), antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in the leachate activated sludge system has been monitored and analyzed comprehensively. The results suggested that MPs could effectively alter the migration trajectory of tetracycline resistance genes (tet genes) in the leachate activated sludge system under intermittent and continuous influent conditions. After adding MPs, the total average abundance of tet genes in leachate increased from 0.74 ± 0.07 to 0.78 ± 0.07 (log10tet genes/log10 16S rRNA) and that in sludge increased from 0.65 ± 0.08 to 0.70 ± 0.06 (log10tet genes/log10 16S rRNA). Except for tetA, the abundance of tetB, tetO, tetM and tetQ on MPs increased with increasing TC concentration under both aerobic and anaerobic conditions. MPs not only significantly affect the abundance level and migration trajectory of ARGs in the leachate activated sludge system, but also remarkably improve the level of heavy metals in the ambient environment, indirectly promoting the selective effect of antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) and promoting the development of antibiotic resistance (AR). In addition, MPs changed their physicochemical properties and released hazardous substances with aging to force tet genes to migrate from the leachate activated sludge system to the MPs, making AR more difficult to eliminate and persisted in wastewater treatment plants. Meanwhile, microorganisms played a driving role, making MPs serve as a niche for ARGs and ARB colonization. The co-occurrence network analysis indicated the specific distribution pattern of tet genes and microorganisms in different media, and the potential host was speculated. This study improves the understanding of the environmental behavior of emerging contaminants in leachate activated sludge system and lays a theoretical for protecting the ecological environment.
Size-dependent promotion of micro(nano)plastics on the horizontal gene transfer of antibiotic resistance genes in constructed wetlands

Abstract:Constructed wetlands (CWs) have been identified as significant sources of micro(nano)plastics (MPs/NPs) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in aquatic environments. However, little is known about the impact of MPs/NPs exposure on horizontal gene transfer (HGT) of ARGs and shaping the corresponding ARG hosts' community. Herein, the contribution of polystyrene (PS) particles (control, 4 mm, 100 μm, and 100 nm) to ARG transfer was investigated by adding an engineered fluorescent Escherichia coli harboring RP4 plasmid-encoded ARGs into CWs. It was found MPs/NPs significantly promoted ARG transfer in a size-dependent manner in each CW medium ( p < 0.05). The 100 μm-sized PS exhibited the most significant promotion of ARG transfer ( p < 0.05), whereas 100 nm-sized PS induced limited promotion due to its inhibitory activity on microbes. The altered RP4-carrying bacterial communities suggested that MPs/NPs, especially 100 μm-PS, could recruit pathogenic and nitrifying bacteria to acquire ARGs. The increased sharing of RP4-carrying core bacteria in CW medium further suggested that ARGs can spread into CW microbiome using MPs/NPs as carriers. Overall, our results highlight the high risks of ARG dissemination induced by MPs/NPs exposure and emphasize the need for better control of plastic disposal to prevent the potential health threats.

The stress response of tetracycline resistance genes and bacterial communities under the existence of microplastics in typical leachate biological treatment system

Abstract:Landfill leachate is an important source of microplastics (MPs) and antibiotic-resistance genes (ARGs). Here, in the presence of polystyrene MPs (PS-MPs) and polyethylene MPs (PE-MPs), the nitrogen and phosphorus removal effect and sludge structure performance were affected in an anaerobic-anoxic-aerobic system, a typical biological leachate treatment process. The abundance of tetracycline-resistance genes (tet genes) in biofilms on the two types of MP was significantly higher than that in the leachate and sludge, and the load on PE-MPs was higher than that on PS-MPs because of the porous structure of PE-MPs. Aging of the MPs increased their surface roughness and abundance of oxygen-containing functional groups and shaped the profile of ARGs in the MP biofilms. The biofilm biomass and growth rate on the two types of MP increased with the incubation time in the first 30 days, and was affected by environmental factors. Structural equation models and co-occurrence network analysis demonstrated that the MPs indirectly affected the spectrum of ARGs by affecting biofilm formation, and, to a lesser extent, had a direct impact on the selective enrichment of ARGs. We discuss the mechanisms of the relationships between MPs and ARGs in the leachate treatment system, which will have guiding significance for future research. Our data on the colonization of microorganisms and tet genes in MPs biofilms provide new evidence concerning the accumulation and transmission of these ARGs, and are important for understanding the mechanisms of MPs in spreading pollution.

Abstract:Landfill are important reservoirs of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). They harbor diverse contaminants, such as heavy metals and persistent organic chemicals, complex microbial consortia, and anaerobic degradation processes, which facilitate the occurrence, development, and transfer of ARGs and antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB). The main concern is that antibiotics and developed ARGs and ARB may transfer to the local environment via leachate and landfill leakage. In this paper, we provide an overview of established studies on antibiotics and ARGs in landfills, summarize the origins and distribution of antibiotics and ARGs, discuss the linkages among various antibiotics, ARGs, and bacterial communities as well as the influencing factors of ARGs, and evaluate the current treatment processes of antibiotics and ARGs. Finally, future research is proposed to fill the current knowledge gaps, which include mechanisms for the development and transmission of antibiotic resistance, as well as efficient treatment approaches for antibiotic resistance.

Abstract:Microplastics are prevalent in freshwater, coastal, and deep ocean sediments. However, the effects of microplastics on sedimentary microbial ecosystems have not been well reported. Using 16S rRNA gene and metagenomic sequencing, we investigated coastal sedimentary sludge microbial community structure, composition, function, assembly, and propagation of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in response to different microplastics. The nitrifier, denitrifiers and ammonia oxidizer were significantly altered upon microplastics exposure. The concentrations of NO 3 − , NO 2 − , and NH 4 + in PE and PET treated groups were in consistent with relative abundances of corresponding functional genera. The increased antibiotic efflux ARGs abundance in PE, PET, and PVC groups was directly related to the promoted efflux pump system. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, ROS-mediated DNA damage, and increased stress response induced by microplastics exposure might be the reason for the promotion of ARGs transfer. Assembly of dominate nitrogen degrading genus and ARGs hosts tended to be deterministic under the pressure of microplastics, indicating the selective effect of microplastics.

Abstract:Landfill is reservoir containing antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) that pose a threat to human life and health. Heavy metals impose lasting effects on ARGs. This review investigated and analyzed the distribution, composition, and abundance of heavy metals and ARGs in landfill. The abundance ranges of ARGs detected in refuse and leachate were similar. The composition of ARG varied with sampling depth in refuse. ARG in leachate varies with the distribution of ARG in the refuse. The ARG of sulI was associated with 11 metals (Co, Pb, Mn, Zn, Cu, Cr, Ni, Sb, As, Cd, and Al). The effects of the total metal concentration on ARG abundance were masked by many factors. Low heavy metal concentrations showed positive effects on ARG diffusion; conversely, high heavy metal concentrations showed negative effects. Organic matter had a selective pressure effect on microorganisms and could provide energy for the diffusion of ARGs. Complexes of heavy metals and organic matter were common in landfill. Therefore, the hypothesis was proposed that organic matter and heavy metals have combined effects on the horizontal gene transfer (HGT) of ARGs during landfill stabilization. This work provides a new basis to better understand the HGT of ARGs in landfill.

Selective enrichment of high-risk antibiotic resistance genes and priority pathogens in freshwater plastisphere: Unique role of biodegradable microplastics

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) has been concerned as emerging vectors for spreading antibiotic resistance and pathogenicity in aquatic environments, but the role of biodegradable MPs remains largely unknown. Herein, field in-situ incubation method combined with metagenomic sequencing were employed to reveal the dispersal characteristics of microbial community, antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), mobile genetic elements (MGEs), and virulence factors (VFs) enriched by MPs biofilms. Results showed that planktonic microbes were more prone to enrich on biodegradable MPs (i.e., polyhydroxyalkanoate and polylactic acid) than non-biodegradable MPs (i.e., polystyrene, polypropylene and polyethylene). Distinctive microbial communities were assembled on biodegradable MPs, and the abundances of ARGs, MGEs, and VFs on biofilms of biodegradable MPs were much higher than that of non-biodegradable MPs. Notably, network analysis showed that the biodegradable MPs selectively enriched pathogens carrying ARGs, VFs and MGEs concurrently, suggesting a strong potential risks of co-spreading antibiotic resistance and pathogenicity through horizontal gene transfer. According to WHO priority list of Antibiotic Resistant Pathogens (ARPs) and ARGs health risk assessment framework, the highest abundances of Priority 1 ARPs and Rank I risk ARGs were found on polylactic acid and polyhydroxyalkanoate, respectively. These findings elucidate the unique and critical role of biodegradable MPs for selective enrichment of high-risk ARGs and priority pathogens in freshwater environments.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) has aroused growing environmental, ecological and health concerns due to their biotoxicity and non-negligible roles in promoting the spread of pathogens and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). Especially, the formation of biofilm on MP surfaces in an aquatic environment is supposed to drastically enhance the MPs' impacts due to enhanced microbial contact and an altered local environment, but the detailed risks and MPs-microbe interactions remain poorly understood. This Viewpoint sheds light on the phenomenon and mechanisms of MP-promoted ARGs propagation, underscores the underestimated risks of ARG spread in real water environments due to biased microplastic detection methods as well as the limited knowledge of combined pollution and inappropriate risk assessment methods, and discusses the future research needs for risk control.
Antibiotic resistance genes in landfill leachates from seven municipal solid waste landfills: Seasonal variations, hosts, and risk assessment

Abstract:Landfills are reservoir of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance. Antibiotic resistance would transport to the environment through landfill leachate, posing threaten to the environment. However, long term monitoring on antibiotic resistance genes in landfill leachate transportation is limited. Furthermore, antibiotic resistance gene hosts and their risk assessment are lacking. In this study, we investigated the seasonal variation of ARGs sulI, tetO and tetW in seven Chinese municipal solid waste landfill leachates over two years (2017–2018) by quantitative polymerase chain reaction. We also evaluated the associated bacterial hosts and their risk levels based on metagenomics and omics-based framework for assessing the health risk of antimicrobial resistance genes, respectively. Because sulI, tetO and tetW are abundant and the most frequently detected ARGs in global landfill system, they are selected as target ARGs. Results showed that the relative content of target ARGs in 2017 was 100 times higher than that in 2018, suggesting ARGs attenuation. The hosts of sulI were phyla of Lentisphaerae and Proteobacteria, whereas the hosts of tetO and tetW were Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes. Remarkably, the host species include pathogenic bacterium (Salmonella enterica, Labilibaculum filiforme, Bacteroidales bacterium, Anaeromassilibacillus senegalensis, and Pseudochrobactrum sp. B5). ARGs tetO and tetW belong to the Rank II level with characters of enrichment in the human-associated environment and gene mobility, and sulI ranked as Rank VI. In addition, among 1210 known ARGs in the landfill leachate, 78 ARGs belonged to risk Rank I (enrichment in human-associated environment, gene mobility and pathogenicity), demonstrating high health risk of landfill system. These results demonstrate that antibiotic resistance in landfill and landfill leachate have high health risk and the kind of ARGs with high abundance in human-associated environment, gene mobility and pathogenicity should be paid more attention.

Abstract:Landfills are one of the most important reservoirs of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), and ARG pollution in landfills has been well investigated. However, the various factors contributing to the widespread prevalence of ARGs in landfills have rarely been explored. Here, we quantified three classes of antibiotics, six kinds of heavy metals, eight types of ARGs, and five varieties of mobile genetic elements (MGEs) in refuse samples from 10 landfills in Zhejiang Province, China. Compared with sulfonamides and macrolides, fluoroquinolones were present at much higher concentrations in all refuse samples, reaching a concentration of 1406.85 mu g/kg in the Jiaxing region. The relative abundances of qnrD, qnrS, mexF, ermA, ennB, mefA, sul1, and sul2 in most landfills were > 10(-4) copies per 16S rRNA, suggesting the presence of highly contaminated ARGs. No significant correlations between most target antibiotics and their corresponding ARGs were found. Variation partitioning analysis indicated that MGEs could be the determining factor in the spread of ARGs in landfills. This research not only reveals high levels of ARGs and the ubiquitous presence of antibiotics in refuse, but also provides guidance for controlling the spread of ARGs in landfills.

Abstract:Microplastics have been proven to be hotspots of bacterial pathogens and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). The enrichment of ARGs in microplastisphere, the specific niche for diverse microbial communities attached to the surface of microplastic, has attracted worldwide attention. By collecting 477 pairs of ARG abundance data belonging to 26 ARG types, based on the standardized mean difference (SMD) under the random effect model, we have performed the first meta-analysis of the ARG enrichment on microplastics in aquatic environments in order to quantitatively elucidate the enrichment effect, with comparison of non-microplastic materials. It was found that ARGs enriched on the microplastics were more abundant than that on the inorganic substrates (SMD = 0.26) and natural water environments (SMD = 0.10), but lower abundant than that on the natural organic substrates (SMD = −0.52). Furthermore, microplastics in freshwater tended to have a higher degree of ARG enrichment than those in saline water and sewage. The biofilm formation stage, structure, and component of microplastisphere may play a significant role in the enrichment of ARGs.
