Abstract:The traditional work of curators—collecting, caring for, researching, and exhibiting artifacts in museums—has expanded in many directions in recent years. Curators today connect as well as collect. They work with several diverse communities: source communities, museum visitors, and researchers. While much of their work remains rooted in material culture and museums, they increasingly work with intangible cultural heritage and consider digital manifestations of culture. This bibliography offers historical and contemporary as well as theoretical and practical perspectives on curatorship. It begins with a listing of journals and organizations useful to scholars of curation and museum practitioners. The following sections, which list foundational texts and books of collected essays on museum curatorship, offer an introduction and overview of the field. Next is a section providing historical perspective on curatorship, including writing on important museums and exhibitions. This history is followed by sections describing the dual objects of curatorial work: intangible cultural heritage and material culture. Next is a section on curatorial work, divided into subsections that address theory, practice, and digital approaches. Decolonizing curatorial practice, which involves challenging museums’ colonial practices and including Indigenous people in the conservation, interpretation, and display of their material culture and histories, is a necessary corrective to and extension of this traditional work; subsections include shared authority, repatriation and restitution, and indigenizing curation. The bibliography ends with perhaps the most important topic: curatorial ethics. The focus is on anthropological curatorship, but we have included material from nearby fields, including art and history curatorship, when the additional perspective seems useful. The geographical focus is on the United States, and to a lesser extent Great Britain, Canada, New Zealand, and Australia, with a few entries describing European museum work. Abstract:This chapter traces how, in the context of Western colonial knowledge cultures and regimes of value, certain objects from African material cultures were reinvented as art, and considers the impact of these changes on the development of museum and heritage cultures in postcolonial Africa, in which museums were seen both as subjects of, and tools for, cultural decolonization. African cultural institutions were confronted with the legacies of colonial regimes of value, but also with the physical legacies of colonial cultural infrastructures, in which large collections of what was now considered national heritage were located in the West. The chapter addresses the rising importance of international heritage and conservation regimes supported by organizations such as UNESCO, and their role in the negotiation of restitution claims.

Abstract:Caring for many objects is one of the more challenging aspects of the museum profession. In museums that collect cultural belongings, utilizing best care practices ensures that objects of cultural heritage can be studied and appreciated by the peoples whose cultures they represent. Thus, providing collections care is necessary to support learning and to further the efforts of decolonization. However, in many museum education departments, a specialized collections management role does not exist to care for teaching collections. This case study examines why it is essential for education departments to have a dedicated collections manager, particularly in the era of museum decolonization. The case study details how the Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture in Seattle, Washington, applied decolonial efforts to collection management as our team preserves a cultural belonging from the Lummi Nation in our teaching collection.

Abstract:This essay builds on the emerging (museum) decolonizing perspectives to (i) explore the biographical details and modes of curation and classification to which “ethnographic” 1 objects collected during the colonial era have been exposed; to (ii) foreground the complexities of inherited colonial museum processes embedded in African urban contexts; and, to (iii) consider alternative modes of engagement with ethnographic objects and local Indigenous communities to challenge the embedded regimes of care and the marginalization rendered to Indigenous epistemologies. One of the biggest questions facing museums in the world today is how to deal with the hordes of objects collected from various Indigenous communities and placed in museums far away from the communities who made and used them. Using the case of an “ethnographic” collection in a former colonial museum, we call for a paradigm shift in museum practices, and challenge the present state of affairs of museum curatorship. We then briefly suggest possible ways in which such museums can confront their imperial histories and unsettle their inherited regimes of care and representation. We call for museums to enter into conversations with communities, listening to them and effecting curatorial activities that re-center local ways of knowing, while embracing the complexities associated with such engagements.

Abstract:Museum Development and Cultural Representation critically examines the development of a museum and cultural heritage centre in the indigenous Kelabit Highlands in Sarawak, Malaysia. Building on their direct involvement in the development of the project, the authors appraise the process in retrospect through a thematic analysis. Themes covered include the project’s local and international contexts, community involvement and agency, the balance of tourism and authenticity, and the role of non-local partners. Through their analysis, the authors unpack the complexities of cultural representation and identity in heritage design practice, and investigate the relationship between capacity building and agency in cultural heritage management. Situating the project within international trends in museology, Museum Development and Cultural Representation offers a valuable case example of a heritage-making process in an indigenous community. It will be of interest to scholars and students studying cultural representation, as well as communities and museum professionals looking to develop similar projects.

Abstract:With more than 2.5 million catalogue records the British Museum’s digital collection database is one of the largest museum databases in the world, constituting a primary point of access to the collections both internally and externally. But its recording systems, developed over multiple generations, contain problematic data in a structure dominated by a single language. This article focuses on efforts to transform a portion of the data within the structural complexities. In 2021, a Hawaiian language research group was formed at the British Museum. Named Keaukānaʻi, this group supports the development and integration of a new taxonomy in ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi (Hawaiian language) for describing Hawaiian ancestral treasures physically at the museum. The authors reflect on the work initiated to deconstruct taxonomical violence, and to build a new path forward for hosting, integrating and centering an indigenous language and associated knowledge at the British Museum. The article presents key steps while also discussing the challenges and limitations encountered.

Abstract:The museum world is currently grappling with questions of how to decolonize anthropological collections and many of these debates are epistemologically oriented. In pursuit of colonial ordering, material culture was extracted from colonized societies, deprived of its contextual meaning, and scrutinized through the lens of colonial knowledge. This article considers how an empirical decolonial practice can be applied drawing on from the current work at the Manchester Museum (MM). Dialogue, open engagements, multivocal conversations, collaborations, and shared authority in knowledge production are some of the decolonial strategies that I share. To illustrate this praxis turn in museum decolonial work, I first look at how we have addressed cultural objects looted from Benin in 1897 that we hold and "contain" at MM in our living cultures collection, underscoring a commitment by MM to transparency and a provision of access to the living collection by different groups of people. The second example is drawn from a collaborative provenance research that I undertook with Nongoma community members in South Africa in rewriting biographies of Zulu beadwork that we house at MM. Overall, I argue that decolonization should embrace a relational practice of caring for objects through active relations of reciprocity and dialogue with communities. The downside of decolonial practices and how are they are inherently shaped by power imbalances and tensions between curators and communities is also critically discussed.
Collections off the grid, but in a net: In search for (de)colonial issues of South-Asian paintings

Abstract:The starting point of this contribution is the observation that paintings and drawings from the Indian-Pakistani cultural area are rarely discussed in the context of decolonization of museums and their holdings. What can be seen in the discourse of media is constituted in public and national interests, but even more in a systematic institutional blindness. Contrary to sculptures, the paintings and drawings were traditionally private property and had no viewing practice in a public sphere. Although I argue that the property changes leading to the entrance of those paintings and drawing into (Western) art collections and academic scholarship are strongly linked to problematic issues of colonial heritage and power imbalance. Further I support that museums do well to consider not only provenance related research but also their exhibition practices as approaches to decolonization.

Abstract:Keeping documentation on museum objects is vital to good museum management. Important polices such as the Collection Management Policy that enumerates what and how the museum will collect objects, and the museum's code of ethics that defines acceptable behavior of staff, boards of directors, and volunteers provide the framework for long-term museum management. Records of accession and deaccession procedures contain specific information on the objects, their donors, and the reasons for their inclusion in, or removal from, the museum collection. Documentary files contain sections on appraisals, condition reports, correspondence, deed of gift or purchase information, notes, and shipping records. Records of loans to and from the museum are important historical documents and contain details of condition reports, photography, loan agreements, shipping details, and correspondence between parties. All files should be kept in perpetuity and preserved through the safeguards of backup documentation, protection from hazards, and deterioration and destruction.

Abstract:Memory Studies, Ahead of Print. While often under-researched, mis-catalogued, and obscured from public display, conflict-related sexual violence is acutely entangled in the story of conflict that the Imperial War Museum tells its visitors, beyond the dichotomous characterisation of present/absent, hidden/revealed or remembered/forgotten. This article outlines and characterises ways in which the Imperial War Museum curates conflict-related sexual violence, illustrating how this equates to gendered and gendering arbitrations on what is appropriate, representative, and moreover what counts as conflict-related sexual violence and as the material and visual culture of war. Curatorial practices are found to both reflect and actively (re)produce patterns of representation in sexual violence discourse, through a prism of visual hierarchies inherent to modern museumification and the Museum's titular imperial legacy. Insights from this case can help guide ambitions of a more activist, feminist curatorial practice, one invested in disrupting harmful patterns and centring what is marginal.

Abstract:Movements have gained momentum within the restitution debate with the aim of taking cultural objects back to Africa. The discussions are vivid. For instance, the Savoy Report stated that Europe's museums keep an overwhelmingly large share of Africa's collections, leaving the countries of origin with almost nothing (Sarr and Savoy <a class="link link-ref link-reveal xref-bibr" href="">2018</a>). Indeed, most—if not all—large museums in Europe and North America bear African collections with colonial legacies. Either their specimens originated directly from former colonies or they were obtained in the context of questionable international procedures put in place at the time. As a consequence, the content, interpretation, and representation of indigenous cultural entities in museums are contentious issues of discussion (Ashley <a class="link link-ref link-reveal xref-bibr" href="">2009</a>). Undoubtedly, Africa has become a prime region for discussing colonial legacies. It is a debate about moral and power pressure (Shyllon <a class="link link-ref link-reveal xref-bibr" href="">2017</a>).

Curating a fashion exhibition centred on Black women: Combatting individual and systemic oppression at land-grant university fashion museums

Abstract:In 2020, we curated and mounted an exhibition at the Iowa State University Textiles and Clothing Museum that centred Black women college students’ fashion. We explored how our participants negotiated their Black and activist identities through dress while on a predominately white campus and surrounding community in the Midwestern United States. In this article, we critically analyse how we, as curators, confronted and rejected white supremacy and were compelled to provide additional labour while curating due to systemic racism. Throughout the curation and installation processes, we challenged numerous forms of oppression, for example: a lack of collected objects representing Black women’s dress practices; assumptions that Black women engage in illegal activities; a dearth of dress forms coordinating with black and brown skin tones. The supplementary work, which included additional time, financial resources, intellectual and emotional labour, is one way that compulsory whiteness is upheld in fashion museums. Curators who engage in social justice initiatives are disadvantaged by ongoing institutional racism, which is prevalent in a plethora of universities in the United States; the focus of this article is predominately white, land-grant institutions. We acknowledge that structural inequities museum curators contend with when claiming space for marginalized identities are prevalent, but can be overcome, despite the hegemony of the silencing and oppression of Black people. We call for a radical shift in fashion museums and curricula.

Abstract:Full-text digital libraries (DL) like the HathiTrust open new analytic opportunities for digital humanists and those studying language-specific corpora such as late imperial Chinese books. These analyses rely on DL metadata records to contextualize and validate findings. However, historic Anglo-American cataloging practices introduce difficulties. Our comparative case study of HathiTrust MARC records for Chinese (1,534), English (25,866), and German (7,872) books (the 1500s–1700s) reveals significant problems: data spread across fields; essential data lacunae; lack of normalization; and information transcribed from sources without translation nor explanation. Cataloging practices need updating to support scholars working with Chinese and other Asian materials.

Abstract:As the cultural sector continues to grapple with the exclusionary practices that structure museums, which the transformative events of 2020 made all the more urgent, JHNA commissioned two roundtables to reflect on the challenges of curating Northern European art. The first, “Expanded and Expanding Narratives in the Museum,” published in the summer 2021 issue, united four curators in discussion about the evolving trajectory of art history and the possibilities for new narratives in exhibitions and installations. The second roundtable concentrates on the groundbreaking exhibition Asia in Amsterdam: The Culture of Luxury in the Golden Age, organized in 2015–16 by the Rijksmuseum and the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts. The exhibition brought together a wide range of exquisite objects, from porcelain and furniture to jewelry and paintings, as a lens through which Dutch culture of the seventeenth century could be deconstructed within a framework of global networks. The accompanying catalogue foregrounded the historical context of the Dutch presence in Asia and articulated the diverse nature of Batavian society, thereby broadening consideration of the consumption of such luxury goods in Amsterdam. Yet even in the seven years since the exhibition opened, conversations around fundamental issues, such as the use of the term “golden age,” and the recognition that the harms of the past live on in the present of underserved populations, have radically expanded the understanding of what an exhibition of Dutch art should and can do. The discussants in this second roundtable, which included two co-curators and a member of the advisory committee from the cultural sector in Indonesia, reflect on the humility and resourcefulness necessary to present shameful racist and colonialist histories, the impact of sharing personal—rather than merely collective—stories in the galleries, and the need for museums to participate in the healing of historical wounds, all while maintaining their commitment to scholarly rigor and ethical standards. They addressed new research and presentation methodologies that inherently expand inclusiveness and surface new types of historical data, leading to a more people-oriented, rather than object-oriented, presentation of art history. Both conversations, edited and condensed for clarity for publication in JHNA, were organized and moderated by Dr. Yao-Fen You, in her capacity then as the Acting Deputy Director of Curatorial and Senior Curator and Head of Product Design and Decorative Arts, Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, New York.

Abstract:In 2001, The Met’s time-based media collection was first introduced with the exhibition Closed Circuit: Video and New Media at the Metropolitan, held from February 23 to April 29, 2007. This thesis focuses on applying and analyzing the validity of a series of new protocols being introduced in 2018 to The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s time-based media collection. Generated by the Met’s Time-Based Media Working Group, these best practices including new and innovative documents and best practices for preserving not only the artworks themselves, but the knowledge and procedures required to install and display these works. Using the exhibition Closed Circuit as a case study, this thesis describes and analyzes these new protocols to illustrate the value and importance of institutional and inter-departmental collaboration for compiling a multi-voice record for each work of art. .
