Abstract:We study the motion of a two-dimensional droplet on an inclined surface, under the action of gravity, using a diffuse interface model which allows for arbitrary equilibrium contact angles. The kinematics of motion is analyzed by decomposing the gradient of the velocity inside the droplet into a shear and a residual flow. This decomposition helps in distinguishing sliding versus rolling motion of the drop. Our detailed study confirms intuition, in that rolling motion dominates as the droplet shape approaches a circle, and the viscosity contrast between the droplet and the ambient fluid becomes large. As a consequence of kinematics, the amount of rotation in a general droplet shape follows a universal curve characterized by geometry, and independent of Bond number, surface inclination and equilibrium contact angle, but determined by the slip length and viscosity contrast. Our results open the way toward a rational design of droplet-surface properties, both when rolling motion is desirable (as in self-cleaning hydrophobic droplets) and when it must be prevented (as in insecticide sprays on leaves).

Abstract:The leaves of many plants are superhydrophobic, a property that may have evolved to clean the leaves by encouraging water droplets to bead up and roll off. Superhydrophobic surfaces can also exhibit reduced friction and liquids flowing over such surfaces have been found to slip in apparent violations of the classical no-slip boundary condition. Here we introduce slip into a model for rolling droplets on superhydrophobic surfaces and investigate under what conditions slip might be important for the steady state motion. In particular, we examine three limiting cases where dissipation in the rolling droplet is dominated by viscous dissipation, surface friction, or contact line friction. We find that in molecular dynamics simulations of droplets on ideal superhydrophobic surfaces with large effective slip lengths, contact line dissipation dominates droplet motion. However, on real leaves, droplet motion is likely to be dominated by viscous shear, and slip, for the most part, can be neglected.
Droplets sliding on soft solids shed elastocapillary rails

Abstract:The surface tension of partially wetting droplets deforms soft substrates. These deformations are usually localized to a narrow region near the contact line, forming a so-called `elastocapillary ridge.' When a droplet slides along a substrate, the movement of the elastocapillary ridge dissipates energy in the substrate and slows the droplet down. Previous studies have analyzed isotropically spreading droplets and found that the advancing contact line `surfs' the elastocapillary ridge, with a velocity determined by a local balance of capillary forces and bulk rheology. Here, we experimentally explore the dynamics of a droplet sliding across soft substrates. At low velocities, the contact line is nearly circular, and dissipation increases logarithmically with speed. At higher droplet velocities, the contact line adopts a bullet-like shape, and the dissipation levels off. At the same time, droplets shed a pair of `elastocapillary rails' that fade away slowly behind it. These results suggest that droplets favor sliding along a stationary ridge over surfing atop a translating one.

Abstract:We investigate the dynamics of micron-scale drops pushed across a hydrophobic or superhydrophobic surface. The velocity profile across the drop varies from quadratic to linear with increasing height, indicating a crossover from a sliding to a rolling motion. We identify a mesoscopic slip capillary number which depends only on the motion of the contact line and the shape of the drop, and show that the angular velocity of the rolling increases with increasing viscosity. For drops on superhydrophobic surfaces we argue that a tank treading advance from post to post replaces the diffusive relaxation that allows the contact line to move on smooth surfaces. Hence drops move on superhydrophobic surfaces more quickly than on smooth geometries.

Abstract:The ability of a liquid droplet to move on an incline has important ramifications in discrete volume fluidic devices. By taking advantage of the spontaneous and copious formation of visible air bubbles within water droplets on a polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) surface, we uncovered a direct correlation between their presence and the ability of droplets to slide down an incline. We forward two possible mechanisms to account for this behavior. The first is attributed to the air bubbles creating regions where additional solid-liquid-vapor phase interfaces are present; wherein due to the buoyancy force acting upwards, the orientation of the contact angles of each bubble (which should also be in hysteresis but in the opposite direction of the hysteresis at the droplet rim contact lines) dictate that the net force of the bubbles in the droplet act down an incline. We show here that this mechanism cannot fully account for the bubble enhanced sliding behavior. The second mechanism is based on the occurrence of the droplet front advancing first, causing the droplet to elongate and thus allowing the receding contact line to partially sweep inwards over the bubbles. This causes a series of point-wise disruptions on the contact line that permits the droplet to slide down more readily. The relatively short time of similar to 180 s during which these micron sized bubbles decrease in size indicates a possibility of this mechanism contributing to a transient means to reduce the retention force of droplets that reside on hydrophobic surfaces. Abstract:Liquid droplets on patterned hydrophobic substrates are typically observed either in the Wenzel or the Cassie state. Here we show that for droplets of comparable size to the roughness scale an additional local equilibrium state exists, where the droplet is immersed in the texture, but not yet contacts the bottom grooves. Upon evaporation, a droplet in this state enters the Cassie state, leading to a qualitatively new self-cleaning mechanism. The effect is of generic character and is expected to occur in any hydrophobic capillary wetting situation where a spherical liquid reservoir is involved.

We propose dynamic non-linear equations for closed, two dimensional surfaces in gravity and apply it to analyze shape dynamics of freely falling water drops. The analytic solutions qualitatively well explain why drops oscillate among prolate/oblate morphologies and display a number of features consistent with experiments.

Abstract:Recently, there has been much interest in using lubricated flat and nano-/micro-structured surfaces to achieve extreme liquid-repellency: any foreign droplet immiscible with the underlying lubricant layer was shown to slide off at a small tilt angle $<$ 5$^{\circ}$. This behavior was hypothesized to arise from a thin lubricant overlayer film sandwiched between the droplet and solid substrate, but this has not been observed experimentally. Here, using confocal optical interferometry, we are able to visualize the intercalated film under both static and dynamic conditions. We further demonstrate that the lubricant flow entrained by droplet motion can transform a partially dewetted film into a continuous layer, by generating a sufficient hydrodynamic force to lift the droplet over the solid substrate. The droplet is therefore oleoplaning, akin to tires hydroplaning on a wet road, with minimal dissipative force (down to 0.1 $\mu$N for 1 $\mu$l droplet when measured using a cantilever force sensor) and no contact line pinning. The techniques and insights presented in this study will inform future work on the fundamentals of wetting for lubricated surfaces and enable their rational design.

Abstract:Achieving rapid shedding of droplets from solid surfaces has received substantial attention because of its diverse applications. Previous studies have focused on minimizing contact times of liquid droplets interacting with stationary surfaces, yet little consideration has been given to that of moving surfaces. Here, we report a different scenario: A water droplet rapidly detaches from micro/nanotextured rotating surfaces in an intriguing doughnut shape, contributing to about 40% contact time reduction compared with that on stationary surfaces. The doughnut-shaped bouncing droplet fragments into satellites and spontaneously scatters, thus avoiding further collision with the substrate. In particular, the contact time is highly dependent on impact velocities of droplets, beyond previous descriptions of classical inertial-capillary scaling law. Our results not only deepen the fundamental understanding of droplet dynamics on moving surfaces but also suggest a synergistic mechanism to actively regulate the contact time by coupling the kinematics of droplet impingement and surface rotation.
Microrollers Flow Uphill as Granular Media

Abstract:Pour sand into a container and only the grains near the top surface move. The collective motion associated with the translational and rotational energy of the grains in a thin flowing layer is quickly dissipated as friction through multibody interactions. Alternatively, consider what will happen to a bed of particles if one applies a torque to each individual particle. In this paper, we demonstrate an experimental system where torque is applied at the constituent level through a rotating magnetic field in a dense bed of microrollers. The net result is the grains roll uphill, forming a heap with a negative angle of repose. Two different regimes have been identified related to the degree of mobility or fluidization of the particles in the bulk. Velocimetry of the near surface flowing layer reveals the collective motion of these responsive particles scales in a similar way to flowing bulk granular flows. A simple granular model that includes cohesion accurately predicts the apparent negative coefficient of friction. In contrast to the response of active or responsive particles that mimic thermodynamic principles, this system results in macroscopic collective behavior that has the kinematics of a purely dissipative granular system.

Abstract:Microstructured surfaces that control the direction of liquid transport are not only ubiquitous in nature, but they are also central to technological processes such as fog/water harvesting, oil-water separation, and surface lubrication. However, a fundamental understanding of the initial wetting dynamics of liquids spreading on such surfaces is lacking. Here, we show that three regimes govern microstructured surface wetting on short time scales: spread, stick, and contact line leaping. The latter involves establishing a new contact line downstream of the wetting front as the liquid leaps over specific sections of the solid surface. Experimental and numerical investigations reveal how different regimes emerge in different flow directions during wetting of periodic asymmetrically microstructured surfaces. These insights improve our understanding of rapid wetting in droplet impact, splashing, and wetting of vibrating surfaces and may contribute to advances in designing structured surfaces for the mentioned applications.

Abstract:We perform a joint numerical and experimental study to sistematically characterize the motion of drops sliding over a periodic array of alternating hydrophobic and hydrophilic stripes with large wettability contrast, and typical width of hundreds of $\mu \textrm{m}$. The fraction of the hydrophobic stripes has been varied from about 20% to 80%. The effects of the heterogeneous patterning can be described by a renormalized value of the critical Bond number, i.e. the critical dimensionless force needed to depin the drop before it starts to move. Close to the critical Bond number we observe a jerkily motion characterized by an evident stick-slip dynamics. As a result, dissipation is strongly localized in time, and the mean velocity of the drops can easily decrease by an order of magnitude compared to the sliding on homogeneous surface. Lattice Boltzmann (LB) numerical simulations are crucial for disclosing to what extent the sliding dynamics can be deduced from the computed balance of capillary, viscous and body forces at varying the Bond number, the surface composition and the liquid viscosity. Away from the critical Bond number, we characterize both experimentally and numerically the dissipation inside the droplet by studying the relation between the average velocity and the applied volume forces.

Abstract:Partially wetting droplets under an airflow can exhibit complex behaviours that arise from the coupling of surface tension, inertia of the external flow and contact-line dynamics. Recent experiments by Hooshanginejad et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 901, 2020) revealed that a millimetric partially wetting water droplet under an impinging jet can oscillate in place, split or depin away from the jet, depending on the magnitude (i.e. ) and position of the jet. To rationalise the experimental observations, we develop a two-dimensional lubrication model of the droplet that incorporates the external pressure of the impinging high-Reynolds-number jet, in addition to the capillary and hydrostatic pressures of the droplet. Distinct from the previous model by Hooshanginejad et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 901, 2020), we simulate the motion of the contact line using precursor film and disjoining pressure, which allows us to capture a wider range of droplet behaviours, including the droplet dislodging to one side. Our simulations exhibit a comparable time-scale of droplet deformations and similar outcomes as the experimental observations. We also obtain the analytical steady-state solutions of the droplet shapes and construct the minimum criteria for splitting and depinning.

Abstract:Sliding behaviors of liquid droplets on solid surfaces are among the fundamental results of wettability. To remedy the lack of quantitative correlation between sliding angle and roughness of the surface, which is known to be effective at enhancing wettability, we report in this paper the observation that the onset of water droplets sliding under gravity on inclined micropillar-structured hydrophobic surfaces always starts with detachment of the rear contact lines of the droplets from the pillar tops. We also establish an explicit analytical model, based on the observed mechanism, by which the sliding angle is fully determined by the fraction of water-solid interface area, droplet volume, and Young's contact angle. This model gives predictions of sliding angles that agree well with experimental measurements.
Driving Droplet by Scale Effect on Microstructured Hydrophobic Surfaces

Abstract:A new type of water droplet transportation on microstructured hydrophobic surface is proposed and investigated experimentally and theoretically - water droplet could be driven by scale effect which is different from the traditional methods. Gradient microstructured hydrophobic surface is fabricated in which the area fraction is kept constant, but the scales of the micro-pillars are monotonic changed. When additional water or horizontal vibration is applied, the original water droplet could move unidirectionally to the direction from the small scale to the large scale to decrease its total surface energy. A new mechanism based on line tension model could be used to explain this phenomenon. It is also found that dynamic contact angle decreases with increasing the scale of the micro-pillars along the moving direction. These new findings will deepen our understanding of the relationship between topology and wetting properties, and could be very helpful to design liquid droplet transportation device in microfluidic systems.

Dripping instability of a two-dimensional liquid film under an inclined plate

Abstract:It is known that the dripping of a liquid film on the underside of a plate can be suppressed by tilting the plate so as to cause a sufficiently strong flow. This paper uses two-dimensional numerical simulations in a closed-flow framework to study several aspects of this phenomenon. It is shown that, in quasi-equilibrium conditions, the onset of dripping is closely associated with the curvature of the wave crests approaching a well-defined maximum value. When dynamic effects become significant, this connection between curvature and dripping weakens, although the critical curvature remains a useful reference point as it is intimately related to the short length scales promoted by the Rayleigh–Taylor instability. In the absence of flow, when the film is on the underside of a horizontal plate, the concept of a limit curvature is relevant only for small liquid volumes close to a critical value. Otherwise, the drops that form have a smaller curvature and a large volume. The paper also illustrates the peculiarly strong dependence of the dripping transition on the initial conditions of the simulations. This feature prevents the development of phase maps dependent only on the governing parameters (Reynolds number, Bond number, etc.) similar to those available for film flow on the upper side of an inclined plate.

Abstract:The onset of droplet motion along a horizontal anodized aluminum surface arising from aerodynamic loading imposed by an accelerating wall-bounded shear flow was investigated for water droplet volumes ranging from 75 to 120μL . Two accelerating shear flows were considered, a flat plate boundary layer and an impinging jet with orientation angles spanning 30∘ to 90∘ . The flows were linearly accelerated at three different rates, 1.2, 2.2, and 4.4m/s2 , to a maximum flow speed of 20m/s . Droplets in the flat plate boundary layer were observed to have a constant depinning threshold Weber number of Weh,crit=7.5±0.5 . By contrast, droplets in impinging jets exhibited lower thresholds in the range of 2⪅Weh,crit⪅4 . Droplet volume and flow acceleration had marginal influence on depinning threshold for the considered parameter range. Rigorous dimensional analysis, supplemented by statistical examination of the present data and results from previous studies, is employed to identify dominant dimensional groups governing Weh,crit . A new dimensionless group that encapsulates interrelated parameters connected to droplet shape and substrate wettability is proposed, producing good collapse of available data and allowing for a simplified empirical estimation of critical depinning velocity. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevFluids.9.034004 ©2024 American Physical Society

Biased Motions of a Droplet on the Inclined Micro-conical Superhydrophobic Surface

Abstract:Anisotropic superhydrophobic surfaces that have many superior properties, such as directional self-cleaning, droplet transport, heat transfer, and so on, are widely used in various fields. Different from symmetric surfaces, a water droplet often shows directional spreading, moving, and bouncing on asymmetric surfaces. To investigate the mechanisms and achieve controllability of droplet motions on asymmetric surfaces, a series of surfaces with inclined micro-conical arrays are fabricated by integrating the methods of soft lithography, hot-pressing, and crystal growth. We found that the droplet would spread along the reverse direction of micro-cone's orientation but bounce and detach off the surface and move toward the direction of micro-cone's orientation. To understand these interesting performances, a mathematical model is established from the perspective of force balance, and a series of numerical simulations are performed. Additionally, the relationship between the droplet motions and the micro-structural parameters, including the inclined angle, line space, and height, are studied.
