Abstract:Concrete arch dams are critical structures, the failure of which would lead to catastrophic effects on a regional scale. Considering the uncertainty characteristics of earthquake and the self-adjustment of inner force of arch dams, it's necessary to investigate the seismic performance index of arch dam for holistically evaluating the seismic safety of arch dam-foundation system subjected to high intensity seismic excitations. By considering the contraction joints movement and concrete material nonlinearity, a series of dynamic response-history analyses of arch dam were carried out under increasing levels of earthquakes. Based on these analyses, the performance index of crest deformation is recommended for the seismic safety assessment of arch dam. And several performance stages of seismic response including the opening of contraction joints and the distribution of concrete damage are also investigated.

Abstract:The Qiantang River originates in the borders of Anhui and Jiangxi provinces and passes through Hangzhou, the capital of Zhejiang province, before flowing into the East China Sea through Hangzhou Bay. It is known for the world's largest tidal bore, which is up to 9 meters high, and travels at up to 40 km per hour and has since ancient times been considered a spectacular sight. The Qiantang River tunnel, which was planned in 1996 and completed in 2010, is the first slurry shield tunnelling in Hangzhou soft ground, and also the first tunnel under Qiantang River. Whether the long-term impact of the surging tide will influence the normal service and structural safety of the under-river tunnel is concerned. In order to monitor the condition of the tunnel and study the impact of the tide on it, a structural health monitoring system was planed and applied in construction of the tunnel. Items of monitoring include the earth pressure acting on the shield tunnel lining, stain in the reinforcing steel bars of the segments, convergence of cross-section and long-term settlement in the longitudinal direction. Both traditional monitoring methods, such as the vibrating wire strain gauges, and the advanced fibre optic technology, such as distributed optical fibre strain sensing, were applied in this monitoring system. This paper describes the application of the structural health monitoring system in detail, including arrangement of monitoring sections, the installation of the instruments, and anticipated research achievements. © 2011 IEEE.

Abstract:As a part of vital infrastructure and transportation networks, bridge structures must function safely at all times. However, due to heavier and faster moving vehicular loads and function adjustment, such as Busway accommodation, many bridges are now operating at an overload beyond their design capacity. Additionally, the huge renovation and replacement costs always make the infrastructure owners difficult to undertake. Structural health monitoring (SHM) is set to assess condition and foresee probable failures of designated bridge(s), so as to monitor the structural health of the bridges. The SHM systems proposed recently are incorporated with Vibration-Based Damage Detection (VBDD) techniques, Statistical Methods and Signal processing techniques and have been regarded as efficient and economical ways to solve the problem. The recent development in damage detection and condition assessment techniques based on VBDD and statistical methods are reviewed. The VBDD methods based on changes in natural frequencies, curvature/strain modes, modal strain energy (MSE) dynamic flexibility, artificial neural networks (ANN) before and after damage and other signal processing methods like Wavelet techniques and empirical mode decomposition (EMD) / Hilbert spectrum methods are discussed here.

Abstract:In the past two decades, a significant number of innovative sensing and monitoring systems based on the machine vision-based technology have been exploited in the field of structural health monitoring (SHM). This technology has some inherent distinctive advantages such as noncontact, nondestructive, long distance, high precision, immunity to electromagnetic interference, and large-range and multiple-target monitoring. A lot of machine vision-based structural dynamic measurement and structural state inspection methods have been proposed. Real-world applications are also carried out to measure the structural physical parameters such as the displacement, strain/stress, rotation, vibration, crack, and spalling. The purpose of this review article is devoted to presenting a summary of the basic theories and practical applications of the machine vision-based technology employed in structural monitoring as well as its systematic error sources and integration with other modern sensing techniques.

Abstract:China is a nation which is heavily suffering from various types of natural disasters, such as earthquakes and typhoons. This paper presents the health monitoring and parameter identification of a tied arch bridge under excitation of Wenchuan Earthquake, in which has been installed with a long-term structural health monitoring system since November 2007 in Hangzhou. At 14:28 on May 12, 2008, Wenchuan Earthquake (Magnitude 8.0) occurred in China's Sichuan Province. The bridge health monitoring system successfully monitored the structural responses due to the earthquake. Abrupt amplitude changes in about 2 minutes are found in the monitoring database starting at 14:37, about 9 minutes later than the earthquake's happening. In order to achieve the on-line alarming of emergent incidents, such as earthquakes and typhoons, we proposed an identification method by comparing the change rate of response data with preset thresholds calculated by the normal response data. Identification of displacement responses under excitation of Wenchuan Earthquake show it is an effective method.

Abstract:China is heavily suffered from various types of natural disasters, such as earthquakes and typhoons. This paper presents the monitoring and recognizing of seismic responses of a tied arch bridge, which has been installed with a long-term structural health monitoring system since November 2007 in Hangzhou, China. Wenchuan earthquake (Magnitude 8.0) occurred at 14:28 (China standard time) on May 12, 2008, in Sichuan province of China. The earthquake was felt in the city of Hangzhou-about 1,600 kilometres away-where bridges and office buildings swayed with the tremor. The bridge health monitoring system successfully monitored the structural responses due to the earthquake. About two-minute abrupt changes in displacement amplitude were observed in the measured signals starting at 14:37, about 9 minutes later than the earthquake's occurring. In order to achieve the real-time alarming of extreme events, such as earthquakes, typhoons, and collisions, this paper proposes a Euclidean distance based recognition method to compare the variation rate of seismic response data with preset thresholds calculated from the normal response data. Using the proposed method, the displacement responses under excitation of Wenchuan earthquake are successfully recognized and the realtime alarming is thus realized. © 2011 IEEE.

Abstract:With the aid of the modern sensing technology, computer network and communication technology, and experimental analysis technology, the structural health monitoring (SHM) system has been a kind of important means to display real-time dynamic structural information and ensure the safety of the structure. In the past decade, worldwide applications of SHM systems on large-scale engineering structures have been emerged. As a cutting-edge civil engineering research field, the SHM technology is a synergy of a variety of knowledge of engineering disciplines such as civil engineering, electronic and electrical engineering, optical engineering, computer science, and software engineering. Apart from the in-depth research activities, the SHM-related courses with experimental teaching programs are eager to be constructed for the promotion and popularization of the SHM theories and practices. In this paper, an SHM-oriented teaching demonstration platform developed by the Department of Civil Engineering, Zhejiang University, China is introduced. A scale arch bridge model is designed and fabricated for instrumentation of different kinds of sensors for measurement of the environmental factors, external loadings, and structural characteristics and responses. A finite element model of the scale arch bridge model is established and the static and dynamic structural analysis is conducted for determination of the sensor installation locations. Finally, the results of the static and dynamic structural responses of the scale arch bridge model through finite element analysis are also presented.

Abstract:The structural strain plays a significant role in structural condition assessment of in-service bridges in terms of structural bearing capacity, structural reliability level and entire safety redundancy. Therefore, it has been one of the most important parameters concerned by researchers and engineers engaged in structural health monitoring (SHM) practices. In this paper, an SHM system instrumented on the Jiubao Bridge located in Hangzhou, China is firstly introduced. This system involves nine subsystems and has been continuously operated for five years since 2012. As part of the SHM system, a total of 166 fiber Bragg grating (FBG) strain sensors are installed on the bridge to measure the dynamic strain responses of key structural components. Based on the strain monitoring data acquired in recent two years, the strain-based structural condition assessment of the Jiubao Bridge is carried out. The wavelet multi-resolution algorithm is applied to separate the temperature effect from the raw strain data. The obtained strain data under the normal traffic and wind condition and under the typhoon condition are examined for structural safety evaluation. The structural condition rating of the bridge in accordance with the AASHTO specification for condition evaluation and load and resistance factor rating of highway bridges is performed by use of the processed strain data in combination with finite element analysis. The analysis framework presented in this study can be used as a reference for facilitating the assessment, inspection and maintenance activities of in-service bridges instrumented with long-term SHM system.

Abstract:Summary of researches and problems about safety monitoring and detection for dams are firstly made in this paper. On the basis of those, the concept and properties of vibration-based method for structural damage detection are given. These researches about the application of vibration-based structural damage detection in other engineering structures are briefly introduced. The feasibility analysis of vibration-based method for structural damage detection of concrete dams is emphasized according to writers' studies, other relative studies, and the testing of an arch dam. It is finally pointed out that there are many problems required to study when the vibration-based method is applied for structural damage detection of dams in practice.

Abstract:The health monitoring system of a bridge is an important guarantee for the safe operation of the bridge and has always been a research hotspot in the field of civil engineering. This paper reviews the latest progressions in bridge health monitoring over the past five years. This paper is organized according to the various links of the bridge health monitoring system. Firstly, the literature on monitoring technology is divided into two categories, sensor technology and computer vision technology, for review. Secondly, based on the obtained monitoring data, the data processing methods including preprocessing, noise reduction, and reconstruction are summarized. Then, the technical literature on abnormal data early warning systems is summarized. The recent advances in vibration-based and non-destructive testing-based damage identification methods are reviewed in the next section. Finally, the advantages and disadvantages of the existing research and the future research directions are summarized. This review aims to provide a clear framework and some reliable methods for future research.

Abstract:The implementation and operation of health monitoring systems in structures is an effective method of evaluating structural serviceability, reliability, safety, and integrity and providing economical maintenance and repair planning. This paper reports on an innovative structural health monitoring (SHM) system designed and permanently deployed on a complicated long-span arch bridge during its construction for the purpose of continuous performance monitoring throughout the bridge’s lifespan. The SHM system integrates several novel and practice-based concepts—i.e., life-cycle concerns for system design and implementation; newly designed high-performance sensors; flexible, modularized hardware and software; multilevel data management; multiscale condition evaluation; and reliable warning strategies. More than 300 sensors of 10 types are installed on the bridge with the aim of monitoring the environmental effects and structural responses. The innovative design and implementation of the monitoring system are presented together with a functional description of each subsystem. Selected preliminary monitoring results are outlined, including structural temperatures, main girder deformations, relationship between structural temperature and main girder deformation, and dynamic responses. The architecture of this SHM system is expected to provide a valuable reference for other structures.

Abstract:The structural behavior during the first reservoir-filling phase is significant for evaluating a super high arch dam's safety. This paper presents an in situ monitoring network of the Xiluodu Dam in Yunnan, China, including a deformation monitoring system using geodetic and nongeodetic monitoring. The system also includes a refined thermal monitoring system based on a slab-level active cooling system. The thermal-structural decoupling numerical analysis method for a dam-water-foundation system is presented in this study with considerations of viscoelasticity material properties and internal/ external thermal loads. The structural behavior of the Xiluodu Dam during the first reservoir-filling phase is analyzed using the smart monitoring system with combination of the in situ monitoring technique and the numerical simulation method. The in situ monitoring result can provide intuitional instructions of the structural behavior, showing a positive correlation between the dam deformation and the reservoir water level. The monitoring results are also used as the verification reference of the numerical model. The distribution characteristics of the displacement and stress of the dam subjected to load cases such as nonimpounding, impounding process, and the normal operating water level are discussed and predicted. Abstract:Structural health monitoring (SHM) has attracted significant attention over the past two decades due to its ability to provide real-time insight into the condition of structures. Despite the development of several SHM systems for long-span bridges, which play a crucial role in the assessment of these structures, studies focusing on short- or middle-span bridges remain scarce. This research paper presents an efficient and practical bridge monitoring and warning system established on a middle-span bridge, a key crossroad bridge located in Shenzhen. The monitoring system consists of sensors and measuring points that collect a substantial amount of data, enabling the close monitoring of various operational indicators to facilitate the early detection of threshold exceedances. Based on this system, the subtle condition of the bridge can be evaluated, and the operational condition of the bridge can be studied through the comparative analysis of the collected data. Over four months of monitoring, data including the strain and creep of the main beam, the strain and settlement of piers and the crack width of the bridge body are observed. Furthermore, the real-time operational status of the bridge is analyzed and evaluated through the combination of the collected data and the structural finite element model.

Abstract:<p>A novel methodology about structural health monitoring and assessment using the wavelet packet energy spectrum is developed by analyzing the acceleration response signal, aiming to identify the structural damage in real time and perform early structural damage alarming. The structural damage warning will be made according to baseline thresholds, which are obtained from a convergence analysis based on the mean and variance value of two structural damage indicators, namely energy ratio deviation (ED) and energy ratio variance (EV). To illustrate the effectiveness of the method, the operational stage of the Wangzong tunnel in the Wuhan Metro Line 3 in China is taken as a case study. The results demonstrate that (1) The multi-threshold wavelet packet denoising method is effective in removing noise and reserving information within 0.1 Hz; (2) The damage indicators ED and EV from the wavelet packet energy spectrum are sensitive to structural damage, whose mean and variance value will converge well along with the growth of wavelet packet component number; and (3) By the threshold value based on the one-side 98% upper confidence limit, the potential structural damage can be detected and alarmed dynamically in the underground filling with complexity and uncertainty. In conclusion, this research contributes to developing new metrics for structural health evaluation with consideration of time dimension and vibration properties of the structure, which is helpful in detecting and alarming the possible structural damage prior to structural failures. Its inherent limitations lie in the relatively complicated computing process and strict requirements in sensor location.</p>

Abstract:Conventional statistical models for dam safety monitoring often require long-term, continuous and stationary monitoring time series, which are difficult to fulfill in the initial operation period of the dams. In this study, special attention was given to the nonstationarity and lack of monitoring time series, and a vector error correction model was proposed for the safety monitoring of arch dams in their initial operation period. Principal component analysis was used in the data preprocessing stage to extract uncorrelated representative temperature trends of the dam body from hundreds of multisensor temperature records to reduce variable dimensions. Then, the vector error correction model was proposed, to take into account the cointegration between the structural responses and the environmental variables. The model was further extended in order to take into account the autocorrelation and cross-correlation among multiple structural responses. The established model performed better in terms of fitting and prediction accuracy compared with existing models and provided better forecast even when limited observations were available. The proposed method was successfully implemented to analyze the deformation of the Xiluodu arch dam in southwest China.

Abstract:Structural health monitoring system (SHMS) has been increasingly used for the maintenance of vehicle bridges nowadays. In this paper, a centralized SHMS is developed to monitor multiple bridges. The structural responses of two vehicle bridges in China, including the deformation of main components, creep and shrinkage of concrete, and strain caused by the temperature are estimated and analyzed based on the long-term monitored data. A numerical simulation has been carried out to investigate the deformation of the bridges, as well as the strain and stress on the specific sections. The results show a good agreement with the measured data. Wavelet analysis method has been introduced to investigate the characteristics in time and frequency domain, where the strain components caused by the season temperature variation, daily thermal effects, and random traffic loads can be clearly distinguished as the signals at four levels.

Abstract:The true dynamic characteristics of dams, namely, natural frequencies, damping ratios, and mode shapes, are important to earthquake-resistant design. Thus, system identification based on in-site measurements is useful for numerical analysis and health monitoring. The well-instrumented strong motion array on an arch dam in Southwestern China recorded some seismic response data. The dynamic properties of the dam are identified from records of the top five strongest earthquake motions using power spectral density functions, transfer functions, and the ARX model. The identified modal parameters of the different seismic events are compared, and the stability of the stiffness of the dam system from 2002 to 2008 and the nonuniformity in the input ground motion are indicated. A linear finite element model of the dam and a nonlinear model that considers contraction joints are constructed and calibrated to reproduce the frequencies determined from the system identification. The modal analysis highlights potential information about the dynamic characteristics of the dam. The comparison of the results of the system identification and calibration shows that the use of the nonlinear model may be reasonable in simulating the dynamic response of the Ertan Dam.

Abstract:In this paper, an approximately incremental dynamic analysis (IDA) is presented for seismic performance assessment of arch dams. The nonlinear seismic analysis of arch dams involves the effects of contraction joint opening, cracking of concrete and foundation radiation damping. Three damage measures, i.e. the maximum joint opening, the cracking depth on the dam-foundation interface and the extent of cracking in the upper portion of the dam, associated with the IDA curves are suggested to identify the performance levels of arch dams. The Dagangshan arch dam (210m high) under construction in China is used as the case study. Although there is slight cracking on the dam-foundation interface during earthquake with the peak ground acceleration (PGA) up to .30g, the dam exhibits nearly linear behaviour with contraction joints closing and can be approximately considered to have serviceability performance. The dam suffers severe damage on the dam-foundation interface and in the upper portion, and it is repairable under the design earthquake (PGA=.56g) or the check earthquake (PGA=.66g). The collapse prevention performance of the dam is achieved when the PGA reaches 1.10g, in which case, the horizontal cracking in the upper portion penetrates the dam blocks and generates partially free cantilevers that control the dynamic stability of the structure.
