Abstract:The traditional Langmuir equation displays drawback in accurately characterizing the methane adsorption behavior in coal, due to it assuming the uniform surface of coal pores. Additionally, the decay law of gas adsorption capacity with an increasing coal reservoir temperature remains unknown. In this study, the fractal adsorption model is proposed based on the fractal dimension (Df) of coal pores and the attenuation coefficient (n) of the adsorption capacity. The principles and methods of this fractal adsorption model are deduced and summarized in detail. The results show that the pore structures of the two coal samples exhibit obvious fractal characteristics, with the values of fractal dimensions (Df) being 2.6279 and 2.93. The values of adsorption capacity attenuation coefficients (n) are estimated as −0.006 and −0.004 by the adsorption experiments with different temperatures. The proposed fractal adsorption model presents a greater theoretical significance and higher accuracy than that of the Langmuir equation. The accuracy of the fractal adsorption model with temperature effect dependence is verified, establishing a prediction method for methane adsorption capacity in deep coal reservoirs. This study can serve as a theoretical foundation for coalbed methane exploration and development, as well as provide valuable insights for unconventional natural gas exploitation.

Abstract:Geo-temperature is a key geological parameter for coalbed methane (CBM) recovery. Especially for deep CBM, the impact of temperature on methane adsorption of coal should receive more emphasis. In this study, the methane adsorption performances of three anthracite coal samples from Shanxi Province, China, under different temperature and gas pressure conditions (20–60 °C, 1–10 MPa) are simulated based on the grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) method. The results show that the Dubinin-Astakhov (DA) model has a higher applicability for characterizing CH4 adsorption than the Langmuir model and Dubinin–Radushkevich (DR) model, which can be attributed to the heterogeneous micropore surface of coal with great specific surface area, and the unfixed value of the structural heterogeneity parameter s. Further analysis indicates that the CH4 adsorption capacities of the studied coals are reduced by approximately 3.3 cm3/g for each 10 °C increase in temperature. This finding is mainly related to the great kinetic energy of gas molecules and the easier transformation of the adsorbed gas into free gas under high temperature conditions. Moreover, the net heat of CH4 adsorption in coal increases with temperature, because of the enhanced thermal movement of gas molecules. Furthermore, a new equation for the adsorbed gas amount of coal that considers temperature effect is established, where both the DA adsorption model and a negative power-type equation n = 0.011P –0.39 are introduced. Compared to the classical equation, the newly established model provides a better predication of the adsorbed gas amount of anthracite. This indirect calculation method is a good supplement to the field tests of the CBM content.

Abstract:Understanding the state of adsorbed methane in coal under high temperatures and pressures is crucial for the exploration and production of deep coalbed methane (CBM). However, the commonly used isothermal adsorption models are inadequate in describing the complex adsorption behavior of methane with multiple occurrence states. Moreover, these models have limited applicability under high-temperature and high-pressure conditions, restricting our understanding of the absorptivity and occurrence mechanism of deep CBM. To address this gap, low-temperature nitrogen adsorption and methane isothermal adsorption experiments under high-temperature and high-pressure conditions were carried out on four high-rank coal samples from the deep CBM block of Daning-Jixian in China’s Ordos Basin. Based on the experimental results, a novel methane isothermal adsorption model combining the pore fractal dimension of coal was constructed, and the model exhibits good applicability in studying the adsorption behavior of methane in high-rank coal samples from a deep CBM reservoir. As the pressure increases, the monolayer adsorption amount of methane continues to rise slowly after reaching a certain value, while the adsorption amount in micropores decreases gradually after the pressure exceeds about 12 MPa. This phenomenon can be attributed to the transfer of methane molecules from the micropore filling area to the monolayer adsorption area at high pressures. Furthermore, it is found that the coal in the study area exhibits significant adsorption heterogeneity, with variations in adsorption capacity due to differences in coal composition and pore structure as well as varying degrees of coalification. The adsorption process of methane during the pressure rise can be categorized into three stages: a rapid increase in adsorption amount, conversion of micropore filling to monolayer adsorption, and final stabilization stage.

Abstract:The study on adsorption thermodynamics is conducive to a deep understanding of the heat and mass transfer mechanism of coalbed methane in a coal seam. In this work, the analytical expressions of the isosteric heat for six adsorption models taking into account the temperature variations are directly derived according to Clausius–Clapeyron equation. Meanwhile, the adsorption content and adsorption heat at different pressures and temperatures are measured by the volumetric method of adsorption with a microcalorimetry system. It is found that the the adsorption heats obtained by different adsorption models exhibit different trends. The fitting quality of the experimental isotherms for different adsorption models affects the adsorption heat result. However, even if the models well fit the experimental isotherms, the theoretical adsorption heat values may be inconsistent. Furthermore, the calorimetric heats for all coal samples decreases with the increase in adsorption content in relation to the micropore distribution of coal. For all coal samples, the modified Dubinin–Astakhov (D–A) model can well fit the experimental isotherms and agree well with the results of calorimetric heats. By comparing the theoretical heat for different k values and the measured heat, the pseudo-saturation vapor pressure of the modified D–A model can be determined. Finally, by virtue of the isosteric heat of adsorption in a small temperature range, the adsorption isotherms at other adjacent temperatures are predicted successfully.

Abstract:Adsorption capacity is a key parameter to evaluate the underground storage capacity of natural gas and the reliability of CO2 sequestration. To explore the effects of temperature and pore structure and properties on adsorption capacity, the quantitative characterization of the effect of temperature on the adsorption capacity of coal and on changes in the heat of adsorption of coal samples during the adsorption process, nine coal samples with thermal maturities ranging from 0.47% to 5.16% vitrinite reflectance (R o) were analyzed by isothermal adsorption experiments at from 20 to 100 °C in 20 °C steps, and the pore structure was analyzed by low-temperature N2 and CO2 adsorption. Moreover, the isosteric heat based on a fixed amount of adsorption and the ultimate heat of CH4 adsorption in different rank coals were also analyzed. The results show that the adsorption capacity of all coals decreases with increasing temperatures, with the maximum volume adsorbed being 11.77–33.34 cm3/g at 20 °C and 9.87–28.99 cm3/g at 100 °C. The change in adsorption ranges from 1.90 to 14.18 cm3/g per 20 °C change, with the coals from 0.71% R o to 3.65% R o showing the least variability: 2.49 cm3/g for every 20 °C change. Coals are dominated by 0.3–0.8 nm micropores, and the isosteric heat of adsorption variation is influenced by the coal surface roughness and intermolecular forces during adsorption. With increasing coal rank, the ultimate heat of adsorption for coal follows the same trend as the adsorption capacity and is positively correlated with the volume and surface area of micropores. The adsorption capacity can be well predicted by the isosteric heat of adsorption only at temperatures ≥ 60 °C. The results can be beneficial for understanding the gas storage in deep reservoirs and promoting the efficient production of deep coalbed methane.

Abstract:Accurately predicting the adsorbed gas content in coal reservoirs is crucial for evaluating the gas content in deep coal seams. However, due to the significant variations in temperature and pressure conditions across different coal reservoirs, accurately assessing the adsorbed gas quantity presents challenges. Based on the adsorption potential theory, this paper proposes a prediction model of adsorbed gas that is applicable under various temperature and pressure conditions. The results indicate that the adsorbed gas content in deep coal reservoirs is influenced by a combination of temperature, pressure, and coal rank. The increase in pressure and coal rank enhances the inhibitory effect of temperature on methane adsorption. Meanwhile, there are significant differences in the results obtained from various virtual saturated vapor pressure models. Among them, the Amankwah model theoretically satisfies the uniqueness of the adsorption characteristic curve, with the optimal k values for different coal rank samples ranging between 2 and 9. In terms of predicting the adsorption gas, the performance of the models is ranked as follows: Amankwah model > Antonie model > Astakhov model > Dubinin model > Reid model. The Amankwah model exhibits the smallest average relative error and root mean square error. In addition, as burial depth increases, the influence of the pressure on methane adsorption decreases, while the significance of temperature increases, with the critical depth located around 1600 m. At depths shallower than the critical depth, adsorbed gas tends to preferentially accumulate and form reservoirs, which generally have lower commercial value. At depths deeper than the critical depth, free gas has the potential to form reservoirs. At this stage, gas reservoirs dominated by adsorbed gas start transitioning to those containing free gas. These findings are expected to deepen the understanding of deep coalbed methane and provide a scientific basis for exploration and development in the study area.

Abstract:Existing experimental equipment was used to conduct high-temperature and -pressure diffusion tests on four coal samples with different low, middle, and high ranks. Then, the characteristics of the diffusion kinetics of coal samples under different temperatures and pressures are discussed by using the results. Meanwhile, a high-temperature and -pressure methane diffusion model was derived and established by combining with the molecular simulation of methane adsorption and diffusion. Finally, the mechanism of methane diffusion in coal samples is discussed by combining the pore structure and heterogeneity of coal samples. The results show that the adsorption capacity and isosteric heat of adsorption calculated by molecular simulation gradually decrease as the temperature increases. Comparing the methane self-diffusion coefficient and corrected diffusion coefficient with the transfer diffusion coefficient of coal samples at different temperatures, it can be seen that the values of three diffusion coefficients all increase with the increase of temperature. Under the same temperature and different pressures, the initial diffusion coefficient calculated by the new model gradually increases with the increase of pressure. With the increase of temperature, the attenuation coefficient by using new models first increases and then decreases under the conditions of 2, 6, and 12 MPa; it gradually decreases under the condition of 20 MPa. As the degree of coal rank increases, the diffusion coefficient, specific surface area, and fractal dimension all first decrease and then increase later. Then, the diffusion coefficient gradually increases with the increase of the fractal dimension, and there is a positive correlation between the two parameters. Abstract:The adsorption of methane in coal depends on both pressure and temperature, and the adsorption gas content decreases as the temperature rises while increases as the pressure increases. When the gas molecule switches between the free state and adsorbed state, energy exchange is accompanied. To study the thermodynamic characteristics (adsorption heat, adsorption content, and adsorption time) of the methane adsorption of coal, the isothermal methane adsorption experiments of coal with different initial free gas pressures at different temperatures (30–90°C) were conducted. In this paper, a well-defined mathematical function of the adsorption heat was established on the basis of the actual gas state equation, Boltzmann energy distribution theory, and the two-state energy model, and the function was verified by the experimental data. The results show that the mathematical function of the adsorption heat can well describe the relationship among the adsorption heat, temperature, and initial free gas pressure in the closed adsorption system, and the adsorption heat involves the initial free gas pressure. The greater the initial free gas pressure, the less the adsorption heat is. In the adsorption process with different initial free gas pressures at different temperatures, the real-time free gas content increases with time and the adsorption system shows desorption process generally. For the adsorption process with the same initial free gas pressure, the adsorption time increases with the rising temperature. For the adsorption process with different initial free gas pressures at the same temperature, the greater the initial free gas pressure, the shorter the adsorption time it takes to reach an equilibrium state. The results help to understand the thermodynamic characteristics and the heat and mass transfer of methane in coal adsorption.

Abstract:Methane adsorption isotherm experiments on semianthracite (2.00-2.33% R o , max ) collected from the Xin’an coal mine, Henan Province, China, were conducted to investigate the effects of pore structure, coal quality, coal maceral, and coal rank on methane adsorption capacity with applications of univariate and multivariate analyses. Methane adsorption capacity varies significantly from 12.03 to 28.40 cm3/g. In univariate analysis, methane adsorption capacity has a strong positive correlation with pore specific surface area, weak positive correlations with pore volume and ash content, and weak negative correlations with moisture content and inertinite content. No correlation is observed between methane adsorption capacity and coal rank. In multivariate analysis, the mathematical model of methane adsorption capacity affected by the combined individual variables is established based on quantification theory I. There are similarities and differences between the two analyses. The similarities are that pore specific surface area has the greatest contribution to methane adsorption capacity, while coal rank has the least contribution. The differences are reflected in two aspects. Firstly, the other influencing factors contribute differently to methane adsorption capacity. Secondly, the positive or negative correlations of some influencing factors present the opposite. The mathematic model synthetically covers the combined effects of the influencing factors, which is more representative in evaluating methane adsorption capacity.

Abstract:Isothermal methane adsorption methods are widely used in CBM and shale gas reservoirs; it is related to gas content. Adsorption volume is not only an important parameter for evaluating the characteristics of coal but can also provide a basis for adsorption capacity calculations. Thus, apparent and absolute adsorption volumes were introduced in this study and calculations of adsorption volume were modified, while differences between the two former variables were compared and analyzed and fitted formulas between adsorption parameter and temperature were established. Results show that differences between apparent and absolute adsorption volumes become much more significant as temperature rises; the adsorption ability of coal conforms to a close relationship with specific surface area (SA). And the Langmuir parameter a which represented the saturated adsorption capacity is increased slowly with temperature rises because of the increase in SA, and Langmuir parameter b which represented the saturated adsorption pressure is sharply decreased with temperature rises. The adsorption properties of lumpy coal are also discussed in this paper; they are good for preventing gas contents in in-situ CBM reservoirs.

Abstract:Understanding the gas sorption behavior of coals not only benefits for enhancing coalbed methane (CBM) recovery but also provides important insights for simultaneous coal and gas extraction. This study aims to quantitatively evaluate the CH4 adsorption behaviors by a series of experiments and the applicability of different adsorption dynamic models in different rank coals (0.48-2.59% of Ro,m). Moreover, the isosteric heat and ultimate heat of CH4 adsorption in different rank coals were also analyzed. The results indicate that the fitting accuracy of different adsorption models is presented as Dubinin-Astakhov (D-A) model > Langmuir model > Dubinin-Radushkevich (D-R) model > Freundlich model for different rank coal samples, and the maximum adsorption volume reaches the lowest value at the Ro,m of ∼1.4%. This phenomenon indicates that the CH4 adsorption in coals is a micropore filling or multi-layer adsorption process (especially in anthracites at high pressure stage) rather than a simple Langmuir monolayer adsorption process. Moreover, the CH4 adsorption process in coal samples can be divided into three stages: the low relative pressure stage (< 0.15 MPa), the medium relative pressure stage (0.15-0.30 MPa), and the high relative pressure (> 0.30 MPa). As the relative pressure continuously increases, the adsorption mechanism changes from the collision stage between pore surface and CH4 molecules to the intermediate stage of monomolecular adsorption and the multilayer adsorption stage. Through calculating the isosteric heat and ultimate heat of CH4 adsorption, the adsorption heat generally increases with the adsorption capacity increasing, and shows a positive correlation with the micropore surface area. The effects of micropore structure and surface area on the adsorption heat should be crucial in coals. These results may be significant for understanding the process of CH4 adsorption.

Abstract:In situ gas content is an important parameter associating coalbed methane, while the influence of pressure and temperature on methane adsorption and desorption still needs to be revealed. In this study, the molecular structure and methane adsorption capacity of anthracite coal collected from Diandong Coalfield (China) were studied based on 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (13C NMR), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and methane isothermal adsorption experiment. The results show that the carbon skeleton of coal sample is mainly composed by aromatic carbon (72%), followed by aliphatic carbon structure (14.2%). Carbons connected to the oxygen atoms contribute 13.7% of the total carbons in coal molecule, and the oxygen atoms are mainly in the form of carbonyl. The 2-dimension structure and 3-dimension molecular structure of coal sample was also reconstructed. The average chemical formula of the coal molecule is C200H133O21N3. The experimental methane adsorption isothermal data of the coal sample under different temperatures shows that with increasing the temperature, the methane adsorption amount at each pressure decreases obviously. At 7 MPa and 20°C, the methane adsorption amount of the coal sample is 28.5 cm3/g. Comparably, at 100°C and 7 MPa, the methane adsorption amount is only 15.9 cm3/g, decreasing by 44%. In mesopores, temperature has stronger influence on methane adsorption under higher pressure than that of lower pressure. On the contrary, in micropores, temperature has weaker effects on methane adsorption at higher pressure than that at lower pressure. The results can be beneficial for understanding methane adsorption characteristics of deep coal.

Abstract:Comprehending the mechanism of methane adsorption in shales is a crucial step towards optimizing the development of deep-buried shale gas. This is because the methane adsorbed in shale represents a significant proportion of the subsurface shale gas resource. To properly characterize the methane adsorption on shale, which exhibits diverse mineral compositions and multi-scale pore sizes, it is crucial to capture the energy heterogeneity of the adsorption sites. In this paper, a dual-site Langmuir model is proposed, which accounts for the temperature and pressure dependence of the density of the adsorbed phase. The model is applied to the isothermals of methane adsorption on shale, at pressures of up to 30 MPa and temperatures ranging from 40 to 100 °C. The results show that the proposed model can describe the adsorption behavior of methane on shale more accurately than conventional models, which assume a constant value for the density of adsorbed phase. Furthermore, the proposed model can be extrapolated to higher temperatures and pressures. Thermodynamic parameters were analyzed using correctly derived equations. The results indicate that the widely used, but incorrect, equation would underestimate the isosteric heat of adsorption. Neglecting the real gas behavior, volume of the adsorbed phase, and energy heterogeneity of the adsorption sites can lead to overestimation of the isosteric heat of adsorption. Furthermore, the isosteric heat evaluated from excess adsorption data can only be used to make a rough estimate of the real isosteric heat at very low pressure.

Abstract:To simplify the analysis of the adsorption of methane by coal, single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), slit graphene lamellae, and bituminous coal pore models were constructed, and the adsorption of methane molecules in the three models was studied using molecular dynamics and density functional theory. The results show that methane molecules cannot be adsorbed within carbon nanotubes with a pore size of 0.5 nm. In carbon nanotubes with a pore size of 1 nm, adsorbed methane is influenced by the inner wall of the SWCNTs to induce dipoles and to interact with nearby methane molecules. In large-pore-size carbon nanotubes and graphene sheets, methane molecules adsorb and accumulate on the wall surface to form adsorption rings, the thickness of which gradually increases with the pore size under the effect of curvature, ranging from 0.455 to 0.521 nm. This criterion for adsorption was applied to the pore model of bituminous coal, and 52 adsorbed methane states were determined. Furthermore, the Brunauer–Emmett–Teller equation was used to fit the methane isothermal adsorption curve of the bituminous coal pore model, and the adsorption quantity of methane in a single molecular layer was 54, confirming that the adsorption criterion of 0.521 nm is reasonable.

Abstract:Changes of heat and energy during methane adsorption and desorption are essential factors affecting the production of coalbed methane. To characterize adsorption and desorption behaviors, low-temperature nitrogen adsorption experiments and methane isothermal adsorption/desorption experiments were carried out on coals with different rank. The Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) specific surface area (SSA) of the coal samples studied range from 0.29 m2·g−1 to 2.31 m2·g−1, and Barrett–Joyner–Halenda (BJH) pore volume ranges from 0.95×10−3 cm3·g−1 to 6.14×10−3 cm3·g−1. It is observed that the BET SSA and BJH pore volume decrease first and then increase with the increase of coal rank. The isometric heat in the adsorption process is less than that in the desorption process. There is an energy difference between adsorption and desorption, which makes the sorption process irreversible. The larger the Langmuir volume, the higher the adsorption capacity, making the external energy required for the adsorption process smaller and the limit isosteric heat more minor. At different temperatures, the Gibbs free energy of samples BD-1, LL-1 and HC-1 changes between 2.26–2.98 kJ·mol−1, 2.05–3.24 kJ·mol−1 and 1.91–3.08 kJ·mol−1, respectively, indicating that the process of methane desorption on coal is a spontaneous reaction. The cumulative reduction of surface free energy (Δγ) and the reduction of surface free energy at each pressure point (Δγp) show that the adsorption capacity of the low- and medium-rank coal are more easily affected by temperature, while that of the high-rank coal is less affected by temperature. Moreover, the smaller the BET SSA, the greater Δγ and Δγp.

Abstract:Understanding the adsorption/diffusion characteristics of CH4 at low temperatures (<273.15 K) is of great significance not only for coal bed methane estimation but also for gas disaster prevention and methane storage in deep coal beds. In this work, the adsorption configurations of anthracite macromolecules were constructed with Materials Studio, and then, the adsorption and diffusion behaviors of CH4 at 233.15–363.15 K were simulated, respectively, using grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) and molecular dynamics (MD) algorithms. The results show that the absolute adsorption capacities of CH4 at low temperatures are substantially larger than those at high temperatures, and the adsorption amount further increases with the continued cooling at a given sorption pressure. The isosteric heat of CH4 adsorption ranges from 8.715 to 11.746 kJ/mol, belonging to a spontaneous physical adsorption. The self-diffusivity Ds of CH4 at low temperatures is substantially smaller than that at high temperatures and further decreases with cooling. The most probable velocity of CH4 molecules (vp) greatly decreases, and the number of gas molecules with a higher energy is significantly reduced by a low temperature, resulting in the diffusion inhibition of CH4.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Kinetic Characteristics of CH4 Adsorption on Coals under Variable Temperature–Pressure Coupling Interaction

Abstract:The accurate determination of coalbed methane (CBM) content is of great significance for its development and utilization as well as for the prevention and control of coal mine gas disaster. In the process of determining CBM content, the coal–gas adsorption system existing in the natural environment is affected by variable temperature–pressure interactions. In this study, methane (CH4) adsorption tests were carried out on coals at different initial equilibrium pressures (IEPs) and in different cooling processes (CPs). The test results indicate that dominant and retrograde adsorption processes existed in the cooling and adsorption processes of the coal sample reaction chamber. During the adsorption process, the temperature variation broke the original adsorption equilibrium, which in turn induced the pressure change in the coal sample reaction chamber, thus resulting in the retrograde adsorption. The intensity of the dominant adsorption increased and then decreased, causing an increase and then a decrease in the retrograde adsorption rate. The commonly used adsorption kinetic models were modified, including the modified pseudo-first-order kinetic model, modified pseudo-second-order kinetic model, modified Bangham kinetic model (MBKM), modified intra-particle diffusion model and modified double exponential model (MDEM). These modified models were used to describe the kinetic characteristics of the dominant process of CH4 adsorption on coals in a variable temperature and pressure environment. The results show that among the modified kinetic models, the MDEM can describe better the kinetic process of the dominant adsorption, followed by the MBKM. The IEP showed positive correlation with the dominant adsorption rate at the initial stage of cooling. For the two CPs (i.e., 293.15–283.15 K and 273.15–263.15 K), the initial adsorption rates at the IEP of 3.83 MPa were, respectively, about 4 and 3 times higher than those at the IEP of 0.72 MPa. The retrograde adsorption process can be described better by a linear model. A peak retrograde adsorption rate existed throughout the adsorption process and increased with increasing IEP. The study of the kinetic process of CH4 adsorption on the coal matrix under the effect of low temperatures and variable pressures will improve understanding of the CH4 adsorption mechanism in a low temperature and variable pressure environment, and provide theoretical support for the development and application of new techniques for CBM content determination.

Abstract:Microscopic pores significantly impact the coalbed methane (CBM) storage, hence gas energy recovery and gas-related problems mitigation. However, the quantitative relationship between microscopic pore properties and CBM storage dictated by gas adsorption capacity remains unclear. In this study, high-pressure isothermal gas adsorption experiments were conducted using differently ranked coal samples to investigate gas adsorption characteristics. High-pressure mercury injection (HPMI), low-pressure nitrogen adsorption (LPGA-N 2 ), low-pressure carbon dioxide adsorption (LPGA-CO 2 ) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) tests were employed for full-scale microscopic pore structure characterization. Considering potential energy induced by CH 4 molecules and microscopic pore wall interaction, an improved method was proposed to quantitatively characterize gas adsorption capacity and obtain CH 4 occurrence characteristics for different-scale pores. The results show that microscopic properties of differently ranked coal samples vary remarkably with evident heterogeneity. The micropore specific surface area (SSA) is 79.396–232.253 m 2 /g, accounting for 90.03%–99.45% of the total specific surface area (TSSA). The adsorption capacities of differently ranked coal samples present significant differences and range between 13.38 and 20.08 cc/g, and shows an asymmetric U-shaped trend as coal metamorphism deepens. Based on microscopic pore properties, the Langmuir volume theoretically calculated using the new method ranges between 12.29 and 20.85 cc/g. The calculated results agree well with experimental results with a relative error of less than 10%, proving that this theoretical model can predict gas adsorption capacity with sufficient confidence.
