Abstract:We establish the dynamics relative to flapping angle of the flapping wing vehicle based on the quasi-steady aerodynamics model and Newton-Euler motion equations, and describe the stability analysis method of linearized perturbation equation under active control by varying flapping frequency based on the Routh-Hurwitz stability criterion. To give a demonstration, we design a flapping wing mechanism and analyze its stability under the linear controller. As a typical benchmark, the aerodynamic and kinematic parameters of a hummingbird are used to estimate stability derivatives of the flapping-wing vehicle. The feasible region for the gain selection of our linear controller is finally obtained.

Abstract:Insects must fly in highly variable natural environments filled with gusts, vortices, and other transient aerodynamic phenomena that challenge flight stability. Furthermore, the aerodynamic forces that support insect flight are produced from rapidly oscillating wings of time-varying orientation and configuration. The instantaneous flight forces produced by these wings are large relative to the average forces supporting body weight. The magnitude of these forces and their time-varying direction add another challenge to flight stability, because even proportionally small asymmetries in timing or magnitude between the left and right wings may be sufficient to produce large changes in body orientation. However, these same large-magnitude oscillating forces also offer an opportunity for unexpected flight stability through nonlinear interactions between body orientation, body oscillation in response to time-varying inertial and aerodynamic forces, and the oscillating wings themselves. Understanding the emergent stability properties of flying insects is a crucial step toward understanding the requirements for evolution of flapping flight and decoding the role of sensory feedback in flight control. Here, we provide a brief review of insect flight stability, with some emphasis on stability effects brought about by oscillating wings, and present some preliminary experimental data probing some aspects of flight stability in free-flying insects.
Wingbeat Time and the Scaling of Passive Rotational Damping in Flapping Flight

Abstract:Flying animals exhibit remarkable capabilities for both generating maneuvers and stabilizing their course and orientation after perturbation. Here we show that flapping fliers ranging in size from fruit flies to large birds benefit from substantial damping of angular velocity through a passive mechanism termed flapping counter-torque (FCT). Our FCT model predicts that isometrically scaled animals experience similar damping on a per-wingbeat time scale, resulting in similar turning dynamics in wingbeat time regardless of body size. The model also shows how animals may simultaneously specialize in both maneuverability and stability (at the cost of efficiency) and provides a framework for linking morphology, wing kinematics, maneuverability, and flight dynamics across a wide range of flying animals spanning insects, bats, and birds.
Turning Dynamics and Passive Damping in Flapping Flight

Abstract:we investigated whether flapping flight has an inherent stability by analyzing the inertial and aerodynamic effects of flapping wings on body dynamics. Based on wing and body kinematics of free flying fruit flies during rapid maneuvers, we found a passive counter torque due to body rotation. It is indentified both in simulation through quasi-steady state aerodynamic model and through experiments on a dynamically scaled robotic wing. An analytical form is derived correspondingly. In the turning yaw axis, the estimated damping coefficient of flapping wings is significantly higher than body frictional damping; this indicates a passive deceleration during turning. By simulating insect to rotate about each principal axis of inertial and body frames, we calculated the corresponding damping coefficients, and further analyzed the attitude stability. The result reveals that, passive damping of flapping flight, while does not necessarily lead to a stable full body dynamics, provides a considerable passive restoring torque that could be critical for flight stabilization and control in the design of micro aerial vehicles. Preliminary analysis on the scaling parameters of passive damping was also performed.
Pitch Perfect: How Fruit Flies Control their Body Pitch Angle

Abstract:Flapping insect flight is a complex and beautiful phenomenon that relies on fast, active control mechanisms to counter aerodynamic instability. To directly investigate how freely-flying D. melanogaster control their body pitch angle against such instability, we perturb them using impulsive mechanical torques and film their corrective maneuvers with high-speed video. Combining experimental observations and numerical simulation, we find that flies correct for pitch deflections of up to 40 degrees in 29 +/- 8 ms by bilaterally modulating their wings' front-most stroke angle in a manner well-described by a linear proportional-integral (PI) controller. Flies initiate this corrective process after only 10 +/- 2 ms, indicating that pitch stabilization involves a fast reflex response. Remarkably, flies can also correct for very large-amplitude pitch perturbations--greater than 150 degrees--providing a regime in which to probe the limits of the linear-response framework. Together with previous studies regarding yaw and roll control, our results on pitch show that flies' stabilization of each of these body angles is consistent with PI control.

Abstract:Flying animals such as insects display great flight performances with high stability and maneuverability even under unpredictable disturbances in natural and man-made environments. Unlike man-made mechanical systems like a drone, insects can achieve various flapping motions through their flexible musculoskeletal systems. However, it remains poorly understood whether flexibility affects flight performances or not. Here, we conducted an experimental study on the effects of the flexibility associated with the flapping mechanisms on aerodynamic performance with a flexible flapping mechanism (FFM) inspired by the flexible musculoskeletal system of insects. Based on wing kinematic and force measurements, we found an appropriate combination of the flexible components could improve the aerodynamic efficiency by increasing the wingbeat amplitude. Results of the wind tunnel experiments suggested that, through some passive adjustment of the wing kinematics in concert with the flexible mechanism, the disturbance-induced effects could be suppressed. Therefore, the flight stability under the disturbances is improved. While the FFM with the most rigid spring was least efficient in the static experiments, the model was most robust against the wind within the range of the study. Our results, particularly regarding the trade-off between the efficiency and the robustness, point out the importance of the passive response of the flapping mechanisms, which may provide a functional biomimetic design for the flapping micro air vehicles (MAVs) capable of achieving high efficiency and stability.

Floquet Stability Analysis of the Longitudinal Dynamics of Two Hovering Model Insects.

Abstract:Because of the periodically varying aerodynamic and inertial forces of the flapping wings, a hovering or constant-speed flying insect is a cyclically forcing system, and, generally, the flight is not in a fixed-point equilibrium, but in a cyclic-motion equilibrium. Current stability theory of insect flight is based on the averaged model and treats the flight as a fixed-point equilibrium. In the present study, we treated the flight as a cyclic-motion equilibrium and used the Floquet theory to analyse the longitudinal stability of insect flight. Two hovering model insects were considered-a dronefly and a hawkmoth. The former had relatively high wingbeat frequency and small wing-mass to body-mass ratio, and hence very small amplitude of body oscillation; while the latter had relatively low wingbeat frequency and large wing-mass to body-mass ratio, and hence relatively large amplitude of body oscillation. For comparison, analysis using the averaged-model theory (fixed-point stability analysis) was also made. Results of both the cyclic-motion stability analysis and the fixed-point stability analysis were tested by numerical simulation using complete equations of motion coupled with the Navier-Stokes equations. The Floquet theory (cyclic-motion stability analysis) agreed well with the simulation for both the model dronefly and the model hawkmoth; but the averaged-model theory gave good results only for the dronefly. Thus, for an insect with relatively large body oscillation at wingbeat frequency, cyclic-motion stability analysis is required, and for their control analysis, the existing well-developed control theories for systems of fixed-point equilibrium are no longer applicable and new methods that take the cyclic variation of the flight dynamics into account are needed.
The Mechanics and Control of Pitching Manoeuvres in a Freely Flying Hawkmoth (manduca Sexta).

Abstract:Insects produce a variety of exquisitely controlled manoeuvres during natural flight behaviour. Here we show how hawkmoths produce and control one such manoeuvre, an avoidance response consisting of rapid pitching up, rearward flight, pitching down (often past the original pitch angle), and then pitching up slowly to equilibrium. We triggered these manoeuvres via a sudden visual stimulus in front of free-flying hawkmoths (Manduca sexta) while recording the animals' body and wing movements via high-speed stereo videography. We then recreated the wing motions in a dynamically scaled model to: (1) associate wing kinematic changes with pitch torque production and (2) extract the open-loop dynamics of an uncontrolled moth. Next, we characterized the closed-loop manoeuvring dynamics from the observed flight behaviour assuming that hawkmoths use feedback control based on translational velocity, pitch angle and angular velocity, and then compared these with the open-loop dynamics to identify the control strategy used by the moth. Our analysis revealed that hawkmoths produce active pitch torque via changes in mean wing spanwise rotation angle. Additionally, body translations produce passive translational damping and pitch torque, both of which are linearly dependent on the translational velocity. Body rotations produce similar passive forces and torques, but of substantially smaller magnitudes. Our comparison of closed-loop and open-loop dynamics showed that hawkmoths rely largely on passive damping to reduce the body translation but use feedback control based on pitch angle and angular velocity to control their orientation. The resulting feedback control system remains stable with sensory delays of more than two wingbeats.

Abstract:Body movements of flying insects change their effective wing kinematics and, therefore, influence aerodynamic force and torque production. It was found that substantial aerodynamic damping is produced by flapping wings through a passive mechanism termed “flapping countertorque” during fast yaw turns. We expand this study to include the aerodynamic damping that is produced by flapping wings during body translations and rotations with respect to all its six principal axes-roll, pitch, yaw, forward/backward, sideways, and heave. Analytical models were derived by the use of a quasi-steady aerodynamic model and blade-element analysis by the incorporation of the effective changes of wing kinematics that are caused by body motion. We found that aerodynamic damping, in all these cases, is linearly dependent on the body translational and angular velocities and increases with wing-stroke amplitude and frequency. Based on these analytical models, we calculated the stability derivatives that are associated with the linearized flight dynamics at hover and derived a complete 6-degree-of-freedom (6-DOF) dynamic model. The model was then used to estimate the flight dynamics and stability of four different species of flying insects as case studies. The analytical model that is developed in this paper is important to study the flight dynamics and passive stability of flying animals, as well as to develop flapping-wing micro air vehicles (MAVs) with stable and maneuverable flight, which is achieved through passive dynamic stability and active flight control.
Integration of visual and antennal mechanosensory feedback during head stabilization in hawkmoths

Abstract:Summary During flight maneuvers, insects exhibit compensatory head movements which are essential for stabilizing the visual field on their retina, reducing motion blur, and supporting visual self-motion estimation. In Diptera, such head movements are mediated via visual feedback from their compound eyes that detect retinal slip, as well as rapid mechanosensory feedback from their halteres - the modified hindwings that sense the angular rates of body rotations. Because non-Dipteran insects lack halteres, it is not known if mechanosensory feedback about body rotations plays any role in their head stabilization response. Diverse non-Dipteran insects are known to rely on visual and antennal mechanosensory feedback for flight control. In hawkmoths, for instance, reduction of antennal mechanosensory feedback severely compromises their ability to control flight. Similarly, when the head movements of freely-flying moths are restricted, their flight ability is also severely impaired. The role of compensatory head movements as well as multimodal feedback in insect flight raises an interesting question: in insects that lack halteres, what sensory cues are required for head stabilization? Here, we show that in the nocturnal hawkmoth Daphnis nerii , compensatory head movements are mediated by combined visual and antennal mechanosensory feedback. We subjected tethered moths to open-loop body roll rotations under different lighting conditions, and measured their ability to maintain head angle in the presence or absence of antennal mechanosensory feedback. Our study suggests that head stabilization in moths is mediated primarily by visual feedback during roll movements at lower frequencies, whereas antennal mechanosensory feedback is required when roll occurs at higher frequency. These findings are consistent with the hypothesis that control of head angle results from a multimodal feedback loop that integrates both visual and antennal mechanosensory feedback, albeit at different latencies. At adequate light levels, visual feedback is sufficient for head stabilization. However, under dark conditions, antennal mechanosensory feedback is essential for the control of head movements. Highlights Visual feedback contributes to head stabilization primarily during slower body rotation in hawkmoths. Antennal mechanosensors contribute to head stabilization primarily during faster body roll. Antennal mechanosensory feedback in head stabilization is mediated via Johnston’s organ. Restricting head movements affects flight control.

Abstract:Flying insects can achieve remarkable and robust flapping aerodynamic performance and flight stability in various environments partially owing to the passive mechanisms of their wings and bodies, but a careful analysis associated with flexible wing hinge for forward flight is missing. Here we develop a fluid-structure interaction model that couples the one-torsional-spring-based elastic wing-hinge dynamics with the flapping aerodynamics to study the aerodynamics and flight stability of the hawkmoth, Manduca sexta , with flexible wing hinge at various flight velocities. The results show that the leading-edge vortex, the body vortex, and their interactions are responsible for augmenting the vertical force production interactively at all flight velocities, enabling a 6.5% increase at fast flight speeds. The elastic storage enabled by the flexible wing hinge exhibits a J curve, achieving high power efficiency at intermediate forward flight velocities. We verify that the realistic wing-hinge stiffness leads to optimal aerodynamic performance in terms of vertical force production and power cost. External disturbance rejection based on the flexible wing hinge is highly robust in multiple directions, independent of the forward flight velocity. Stability and Robustness Analysis of Switched Vibrational Control

Abstract:Vibrational control stabilizes an unstable nominal system by injecting high-frequency dither signals. However, high-frequency dithers consume much energy, and demand high power and high bandwidth control actuators. To alleviate the energy consumption issue, we propose to switch off the dither injection in a periodic manner - introducing a switched dither signal. By tuning the period of the switching appropriately, system stability can be guaranteed. Moreover, the closed loop system's stability properties are robust with respect to a class of additive disturbances. A simulation of an inverted pendulum system illustrates the theory, and shows that the control energy is significantly reduced with only minimal effect on the overall control performance as compared to classic vibrational control.

Abstract:A 2-DOF piezo-actuated flapping mechanism was designed according to the theory of flapping-wing flying rhythmic movement of insects. Based on the physical model of flapping-wing, the modal shapes were studied. A van der Pol type self-excited vibratory system was constructed by active control, and the flapping-wing could generate stable limit-circle movement. Through the research on system responses, the influences of the parameters in the control force on the system characteristics were analyzed. Then the first modal vibration of the system was selected by cross feedback, and the flapping-wing micro air vehicle realized different flying modes by adjusting system parameters.
Chordwise wing flexibility may passively stabilize hovering insects

Abstract:Insect wings are flexible, and the dynamically deforming wing shape influences the resulting aerodynamics and power consumption. However, the influence of wing flexibility on the flight dynamics of insects is unknown. Most stability studies in the literature consider rigid wings and conclude that the hover equilibrium condition is unstable. The rigid wings possess an unstable oscillatory mode mainly due to their pitch sensitivity to horizontal velocity perturbations. Here, we show that a flapping wing flyer with flexible wings exhibits stable hover equilibria. The free-flight insect flight dynamics are simulated at the fruit fly scale in the longitudinal plane. The chordwise wing flexibility is modelled as a linear beam. The two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations are solved in a tight fluid-structure integration scheme. For a range of wing flexibilities similar to live insects, all eigenvalues of the system matrix about the hover equilibrium have negative real parts. Flexible wings appear to stabilize the unstable mode by passively deforming their wing shape in the presence of perturbations, generating significantly more horizontal velocity damping and pitch rate damping. These results suggest that insects may passively stabilize their hover flight via wing flexibility, which can inform designs of synthetic flapping wing robots.

Abstract:Due to aerodynamic instabilities, stabilizing flapping flight requires ever-present fast corrective actions. Here we investigate how flies control body roll angle, their most susceptible degree of freedom. We glue a magnet to each fly, apply a short magnetic pulse that rolls it in mid-air, and film the corrective maneuver. Flies correct perturbations of up to $100^{\circ}$ within $30\pm7\mathrm{ms}$ by applying a stroke-amplitude asymmetry that is well described by a linear PI controller. The response latency is $\sim5\mathrm{ms}$, making the roll correction reflex one of the fastest in the animal kingdom.

Abstract:Locomotion requires navigating unpredictable and complex environments, demanding both stability and maneuverability within short timeframes. This is particularly important for flying insects, and the true flies (Diptera) stand out among this group for their impressive flight capabilities. Flies’ aerial abilities are partially attributed to halteres, tiny club-shaped structures that evolved from the hindwings and play a crucial role in flight control. Halteres oscillate during flight, in antiphase with the wings, providing rhythmic input to the wing steering system arrays of embedded mechanosensors called campaniform sensilla. These sensor arrays convey timing information to the wing steering muscles, but linking haltere sensor location to sensor activity and the functional organization of the wing steering system remains a central challenge. Here, we use calcium imaging during tethered flight to obtain population-level recordings of the haltere sensory afferents in specific fields of sensilla. We find that haltere feedback is continuously modulated by visual stimuli to stabilize flight. Additionally, this feedback is present during saccades and help flies actively maneuver. We also find that the haltere’s multifaceted role arises from the steering muscles of the haltere itself, regulating haltere stroke amplitude to modulate campaniform activity. Taken together, our results underscore the crucial role of biomechanics in regulating the dynamic range of sensors and provide insight into how the sensory and motor systems of flies coevolved.

Instantaneous Wing Kinematics Tracking and Force Control of a High-Frequency Flapping Wing Insect MAV

Abstract:The superior maneuverability of insect flight is enabled by rapid and significant changes in aerodynamic forces, a result of subtle and precise change of wing kinematics. The high sensitivity of aerodynamic force to wing kinematic change demands precise and instantaneous feedback control of the wing motion trajectory, especially in the presence of various parameter uncertainties and environmental disturbances. Current work on flapping wing robots was limited to open-loop averaged wing kinematics control. Here we present instantaneous closed-loop wing trajectory tracking of a DC motor direct driven wing-thorax system under resonant flapping. A dynamic model with parameter uncertainties and disturbances was developed and validated through system identification. For wing trajectory generation, we designed a Hopf oscillator based central pattern generator with smooth convergence. Using the linearized model while treating the nonlinearity as disturbance, we designed a proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller and a linear quadratic regulator (LQR) for instantaneous wing trajectory tracking at 24 Hz; Using the original nonlinear model, we designed a nonlinear controller to achieve robust performance at over 30 Hz. The control algorithms were implemented and compared experimentally on a 7.5 g Flapping Wing Micro Air Vehicle (MAV). The experiments showed that the PID and nonlinear controls resulted in precise trajectory tracking; while LQR controller tracked with less precision but with smaller input effort. In addition, the nonlinear control algorithm achieved better tracking of wing trajectories with varying amplitude, bias, frequency, and split-cycles while adapting to the variations on wing morphological parameters such as wing geometry and stiffness. Furthermore, the lift force measurements of the nonlinear control results were compared with those of open-loop average wing kinematics control commonly adopted in current designs.
Passive mechanism of pitch recoil in flapping insect wings

Abstract:The high torsional flexibility of insect wings allows for elastic recoil after the rotation of the wing during stroke reversal. However, the underlying mechanism of this recoil remains unclear because of the dynamic process of transitioning from the wing rotation during stroke reversal to the maintenance of a high angle of attack during the middle of each half-stroke, when the inertial, elastic, and aerodynamic effects all have a significant impact. Therefore, the interaction between the flapping wing and the surrounding air was directly simulated by simultaneously solving the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, the equation of motion for an elastic body, and the fluid-structure interface conditions using the three-dimensional finite element method. This direct numerical simulation controlling the aerodynamic effect revealed that the recoil is the residual of the free pitch vibration induced by the flapping acceleration during stroke reversal in the transient response very close to critical damping due to the dynamic pressure resistance of the surrounding air. This understanding will enable the control of the leading-edge vortex and lift generation, the reduction of the work performed by flapping wings, and the interpretation of the underlying necessity for the kinematic characteristics of the flapping motion.

Abstract:Flying insects can achieve smart maneuverability, such as rapid acceleration, deceleration, and hovering under complex environmental disturbances. Previous studies suggest that there may exist a delay of two wingbeat cycles for insects to actively tune their wing kinematics in response of disturbances. Such delay may degrade the dynamic flight stability of flapping-wing flights. And it is considerable that insects may use some passive mechanisms in terms of wing flexibility to enhance the flight stability in disturbances. In this study, we carried out a numerical study of hawkmoth hovering flight stability with a focus on how steady and unsteady disturbances affect the body attitudes by performing a fluid-structure interaction simulation of flexible wings in flapping. Our impedimentary FSI results indicate that the bending of the flexible wing in a steady flow seems to be responsible for augmenting the generation of vertical and horizontal forces while reducing the variation of the aerodynamics torques. These results point out to the importance of wing flexibility in enhancing the flapping-wing flight stability in disturbances.

Abstract:A numerical study of dynamic flight stability of a hovering hawkmoth is presented. The method of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is used to compute the aerodynamic derivatives of the aerodynamic forces and pitching moment in response with a series of small disturbances and the techniques of eigenvalue and eigenvector analysis is used for solving the equations of motion. In the longitudinal disturbance motion, three natural modes are identified of a stable oscillatory mode, a stable fast subsidence mode and a stable slow subsidence mode, which indicate that the hawkmoth hovering flight is stable. In short, a hovering hawkmoth, if the motion is dynamically stable and the disturbance die out fast, might not need to make any adjustment with wing motion and will return to the equilibrium state 'automatically'.
