Abstract:Noble-metal nanocrystals are essential to applications in a variety of areas, including catalysis, electronics, and photonics. Despite the large number of reports, there still exists a gap between academic studies and industrial applications due to the lack of ability to produce the nanocrystals in large quantities while still maintaining the good uniformity and precise controls. Because the nucleation and growth of colloidal nanocrystals are highly sensitive to experimental conditions, it is impractical to scale up their production by simply increasing the reaction volume. Here we report a new and practical approach based on milliliter-sized droplet reactors to the scalable production of nanocrystals. The droplets of 0.25 mL in volume were produced as a continuous flow in a fluidic device assembled from commercially available components. As a proof of concept, we have synthesized Pd, Au, and Pd-M (M = Au, Pt, and Ag) nanocrystals with controlled sizes, shapes, compositions, and structures on a scale of 1-10 g per hour (e.g., 3.6 g per hour for Pd cubes of 10 nm in edge length).

Abstract:Nanocrystals are fundamental to modern science and technology. Mastery over the shape of a nanocrystal enables control of its properties and enhancement of its usefulness for a given application. Our aim is to present a comprehensive review of current research activities that center on the shape-controlled synthesis of metal nanocrystals. We begin with a brief introduction to nucleation and growth within the context of metal nanocrystal synthesis, followed by a discussion of the possible shapes that a metal nanocrystal might take under different conditions. We then focus on a variety of experimental parameters that have been explored to manipulate the nucleation and growth of metal nanocrystals in solution-phase syntheses in an effort to generate specific shapes. We then elaborate on these approaches by selecting examples in which there is already reasonable understanding for the observed shape control or at least the protocols have proven to be reproducible and controllable. Finally, we highlight a number of applications that have been enabled and/or enhanced by the shape-controlled synthesis of metal nanocrystals. We conclude this article with personal perspectives on the directions toward which future research in this field might take.

Abstract:Metal nanocrystals with concave surfaces are interesting for a wide variety of applications that are related to catalysis, plasmonics, and surface-enhanced spectroscopy. This interest arises from their high-index facets, surface cavities, and sharp corners/edges. Two major challenges are associated with this novel class of nanocrystals: 1) how to generate a concave surface with negative curvature, which is not favored by thermodynamics owing to its higher energy than the convex counterpart; and 2) how to stabilize the morphology of a nanocrystal with concave structures on the surface. Recently, a number of different procedures have been developed for the synthesis of noble-metal nanocrystals with concave surfaces. This Review provides a brief account of these developments, with the aim of offering new insights into the growth mechanisms. We focus on methods based on two general strategies: 1) site-specific dissolution through etching and galvanic replacement; and 2) directionally controlled overgrowth by facet-selective capping, kinetic control, and template-directed epitaxy. Their enhanced catalytic and electrocatalytic properties are also described.

Abstract:Nano-sized metal particles exhibit different thermal, electronic, magnetic and optical properties from those of bulk ones because of quantum size effect and so on. The properties of nanoparticles depend on not only the size but also the shape. Specially shaped nanoparticles generally have particular surface structures and properties. In recent years, shape-controlled synthesis of nanoparticles has been attracting more and more attention. The progress has been made for the study on subgroup VIII and IB metals. In this review, the syntheses of metal nanoparticles and methods of controlling the size and shape are introduced. Also, the recent investigations on the shape-controlled syntheses of nanoparticles are reported for Pt, Pd, Ni, Au, Ag, Cu and Co, respectively.

Abstract:At the forefront of nanochemistry, there exists a research endeavor centered around intermetallic nanocrystals, which are unique in terms of long-range atomic ordering, well-defined stoichiometry, and controlled crystal structure. In contrast to alloy nanocrystals with no elemental ordering, it is challenging to synthesize intermetallic nanocrystals with a tight control over their size and shape. Here, recent progress in the synthesis of intermetallic nanocrystals with controllable sizes and well-defined shapes is highlighted. A simple analysis and some insights key to the selection of experimental conditions for generating intermetallic nanocrystals are presented, followed by examples to highlight the viable use of intermetallic nanocrystals as electrocatalysts or catalysts for various reactions, with a focus on the enhanced performance relative to their alloy counterparts that lack elemental ordering. Within the conclusion, perspectives on future developments in the context of synthetic control, structure-property relationships, and applications are discussed.

Abstract:The controlled synthesis of inorganic micro- and nanostructures with tailored morphologies and patterns has attracted intensive interest because the properties and performances of micro- and nanostructured materials are largely dependent on the shape and structure of the primary building blocks and the way in which the building blocks are assembled or integrated. This review summarizes the recent advances on the solution-phase synthesis of inorganic micro- and nanostructures with controlled morphologies and patterns via three typical colloidal chemical routes, i.e., synthesis based on catanionic micelles, reactive templates, and colloidal crystal templates, with focus on the approaches developed in our lab. Firstly, catanionic micelles formed by mixed cationic/anionic surfactants are used as effective reaction media for the shape-controlled synthesis of inorganic nanocrystals and the solution growth of hierarchical superstructures assembled by one-dimensional (1D) nanostructures. Secondly, reactive template-directed chemical transformation strategy provides a simple and versatile route to fabricate both hollow structures and 1D nanostructures. Thirdly, colloidal crystals are employed as very effective templates for the facile solution-phase synthesis of novel inorganic structures with controlled patterns, such as three-dimensionally (3D) ordered macroporous materials and two-dimensionally (2D) patterned nanoarrays and nanonets. Finally, a brief outlook on the future development in this area is presented.

Abstract:Controlling the structure of noble-metal-based nanomaterials (NMNs) with precision at an atomic level has received considerable attention in recent years. However, the complexity of synthetic process poses great challenges in the delicate design and fine control of NMNs. In this review, we focus on recent progress made in the chemical synthesis of NMNs at an atomic level, which include surface engineering of NMNs, atomic layer coating of NMNs, metal doping or substitution, and intermetallic compounds. The catalytic properties of well-controlled NMNs are discussed. Finally, the major challenges and opportunities pertaining to the controllable synthesis of NMNs are presented. We believe this brief review provides up-to-date information on the fine tuning of NMNs structures, and offers some new perspectives of this rapidly developing field. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:Controlling the surface structure of metal nanocrystals while maximizing the utilization efficiency of the atoms is a subject of great importance. An emerging strategy that has captured the attention of many research groups involves the conformal deposition of one metal as an ultrathin shell (typically 1-6 atomic layers) onto the surface of a seed made of another metal and covered by a set of well-defined facets. This approach forces the deposited metal to faithfully replicate the surface atomic structure of the seed while at the same time serving to minimize the usage of the deposited metal. Here, the recent progress in this area is discussed and analyzed by focusing on the synthetic and mechanistic requisites necessary for achieving surface atomic replication of precious metals. Other related methods are discussed, including the one-pot synthesis, electrochemical deposition, and skin-layer formation through thermal annealing. To close, some of the synergies that arise when the thickness of the deposited shell is decreased controllably down to a few atomic layers are highlighted, along with how the control of thickness can be used to uncover the optimal physicochemical properties necessary for boosting the performance toward a range of catalytic reactions.

Abstract:Synthesis of bimetallic nanomaterials with well controlled shape is an important topic in heterogeneous catalysis, low-temperature fuel cell technology, and many other fields. Compared with monometallic counterparts, bimetallic nanocatalysts endow scientists with more opportunities to optimize the catalytic performance by modulating the charge transfer between different metals, local coordination environment, lattice strain and surface element distribution. Considering the current challenges in shape controlled synthesis of bimetallic nanocatalysts, this tutorial review highlights some significant achievements in preparing bimetallic alloy, core-shell and heterostructure nanocrystals with well-defined morphologies, summarizes four general routes and some key factors of the bimetallic shape control scenarios, and provides some general ideas on how to design synthetic strategies to control the shape and exposing facets of bimetallic nanocrystals. The composition and shape dependent catalytic behaviours of bimetallic nanocrystals are reviewed as well.

Abstract:The application of nanocrystals as heterogeneous catalysts and plasmonic nanoparticles requires fine control of their shape and chemical composition. A promising idea to achieve synergistic effects is to combine two distinct chemical and/or physical functionalities in bi-metallic core-shell nanocrystals. Although techniques for the synthesis of single-component nanocrystals with spherical or anisotropic shape are well established, new methods are sought to tailor multicomponent nanocrystals. Here, we probe etching in a controlled redox environment as a synthesis technique for multi-component nanocrystals. Our Monte Carlo computer simulations demonstrate the appearance of characteristic non-equilibrium intermediate microstructures that are further thermodynamically tested and analyzed with molecular dynamics. Convex platelet, concave polyhedron, pod, cage and strutted-cage shapes are obtained at room temperature with fully coherent structure exposing crystallographic facets and chemical elements along distinct particle crystallographic directions. We observe that structural and dynamic properties are markedly modified compared to the untreated compact nanocrystal.

Abstract:Silver nanocrystals with well-controlled shapes have received broad interest owing to their remarkable properties for a variety of applications in areas such as plasmonics, catalysis, and electronics. The ability to preserve the shape of Ag nanocrystals has become a key issue in realizing the full scope of these applications. Here we provide an account of recent progress in addressing the shape stability of Ag nanocrystals used as colloidal samples. We begin with a brief introduction to the various shape-dependent properties of Ag nanocrystals, followed by a discussion of the general strategies and representative examples that can enhance the shape stability of Ag nanocrystals without compromising their unique properties. Finally, we conclude our discussion with perspective on the challenges in preserving the properties intrinsic to Ag nanocrystals with well-controlled shapes, as well as the possibility to have the strategies extended to other metals.

Abstract:Shape and size play powerful roles in determining the properties of a material; controlling these aspects with precision is therefore an important, fundamental goal of the chemical sciences. In particular, the introduction of shape anisotropy at the nanoscale has emerged as a potent way to access new properties and functionality, enabling the exploration of complex nanomaterials across a range of applications. Recent advances in DNA and protein nanotechnology, inorganic crystallization techniques, and precision polymer self-assembly are now enabling unprecedented control over the synthesis of anisotropic nanoparticles with a variety of shapes, encompassing one-dimensional rods, dumbbells and wires, two-dimensional and three-dimensional platelets, rings, polyhedra, stars, and more. This has, in turn, enabled much progress to be made in our understanding of how anisotropy and particle dimensions can be tuned to produce materials with unique and optimized properties. In this Review, we bring these recent developments together to critically appraise the different methods for the bottom-up synthesis of anisotropic nanoparticles enabling exquisite control over morphology and dimensions. We highlight the unique properties of these materials in arenas as diverse as electron transport and biological processing, illustrating how they can be leveraged to produce devices and materials with otherwise inaccessible functionality. By making size and shape our focus, we aim to identify potential synergies between different disciplines and produce a road map for future research in this crucial area.

Although the focus is on the recent progress in synthesis of colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals in non-aqueous solution, there is some review of the historical development of the aqueous and other approaches. Mechanisms for controlling the shape, size, and optical properties of colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals are described in detail, although for the most part this topic can only be treated on a qualitative level. Finally, one area of study, the formation of nanocrystals, is discussed in terms of its practical and fundamental significance.

Abstract:Shape-controlled synthesis is essential for functional nanomaterials, allowing deeper insights intothe relationship between the structures and the catalytic properties. Synthesis of nanocrystals with particular morphologies are usually studied independently among various synthetic methods, those underline that different surface capping ligands or shape-directing agents bring about disparate shapes. However, a single quantitative parameter method is still lacking to realize precise control of well-defined morphology nanocrystals, especially anisotropic structures, which is essential to understanding the growth process of nanocrystals. Herein, we proposed a single-parameter-tuned synthesis strategy for preparation of shape-controlled gold nanocrystals by regulating the amount of iron carbonyl, by which we produced highly monodisperse Au nanocrystals with various shapes in organic phase including nanoplates (diameter of 16.02 ± 1.13 nm and thickness of 5.35 ± 0.58 nm), nanorods (length of 37.53 ± 3.73 nm and width of 5.26 ± 0.37 nm) and nanospheres (diameter of 8.26 ± 0.38 nm). The single-parameter-tuned method reveals the dual roles of iron carbonyl for controlling the shapes of gold nanocrystals including reductant and oxidative etchant and empowers versatility in synthetic methodology for other noble metals. Moreover, catalytic activity shifting in shapes of nanocrystals was revealed based on the reduction of 4-nitrophenol, showing that the as-synthesized Au nanoplates displayed the enhanced catalytic performance with the lowest activation energy. Our work provides a brand-new pathway for shape-controlled synthesis of noble-metal nanocrystals and has a strong practical value in application fields.

Abstract:In this review, we highlight the role of halogenated compounds in the colloidal synthesis of nanostructured semiconductors. Halogen-containing metallic salts used as precursors and halogenated hydrocarbons used as ligands allow stabilizing different shapes and crystal phases, and enable the formation of colloidal systems with different dimensionality. We summarize recent reports on the tremendous influence of these compounds on the physical properties of nanocrystals, like field-effect mobility and solar cell performance and outline main analytical methods for the nanocrystal surface control.

Abstract:Significant advances in colloidal synthesis made in the past two decades have enabled the preparation of high quality nanoparticles with well-controlled sizes, shapes, and compositions. It has recently been realized that such nanoparticles can be utilized as 'artificial atoms' for building new materials which not only combine the size- and shape-dependent properties of individual nanoparticles but also create new collective properties by taking advantage of their electromagnetic interactions. The controlled clustering of nanoparticle building blocks into defined geometric arrangements opens a new research area in materials science and as a result much interest has been paid to the creation of secondary structures of nanoparticles, either by direct solution growth or self-assembly methods. In this tutorial review, we introduce recently developed strategies for the creation and surface modification of colloidal nanoparticle clusters, demonstrate the new collective properties resulting from their secondary structures, and highlight several of their many important technological applications ranging from photonics, separation, and detection, to multimodal imaging, energy storage and transformation, and catalysis.

Abstract:Nanoscale amorphous materials are very important member of the non-crystalline solids family and have emerged as a new category of advanced materials. However, morphological control of amorphous nanomaterials is very difficult because of the atomic isotropy of their internal structures. In this review, we introduce some emerging innovative methods to fabricate well-defined, regular-shaped amorphous nanomaterials. We then highlight some examples to evaluate the use of these amorphous materials in electrodes, and their optical response. There is still plenty of room to explore the amorphous world. As researchers continue to advance the scientific tools that underpin the concepts related to “amorphous”, additional applications of these materials will emerge. Their controlled synthesis will undoubtedly attain new heights in the discipline of nanomaterials, and allow nanoscale amorphous materials to become more sophisticated, diverse, and mainstream.

Dopant-Induced Shape Evolution of Colloidal Nanocrystals: the Case of Zinc Oxide

Abstract:The electrical, optical and other important properties of colloidal nanocrystals are determined mainly by the crystals' chemical composition, size and shape. The introduction of specific dopants is a general approach of modifying the properties of such nanocrystals in well-controlled ways. Here we show that in addition to altering the atomic composition of the nanocrystals the introduction of specific dopants can also lead to dramatic changes in morphology. The creation of Mg doped ZnO nanocrystals by an ester elimination method provides an excellent example of this procedure: depending on the molar ratio of dopant precursor in the reagents, nanocrystals with well defined shapes, from tetrapods to ultrathin nanowires, which exhibit tunable optoelectronic properties, are obtained in a one-step reaction. We find that the Mg dopant plays an important role in the primary nucleation stage, resulting in seeds possessing either zincblende or wurtzite structures, which is critical for the growth of nanocrystals with different shapes. We demonstrate that this method can be extended to other oxide nanocrystal systems and provides an attractive and effective strategy for creating doped nanocrystals with interesting compositional and spatial complexity. Exquisite control of the doping procedure we have developed is a promising avenue to controlled synthesis of nanocrystals with exactly defined compositions, specifically tailored shapes and advanced materials properties.
