Information Technology and Social Work Education in Malaysia: Challenges and Prospects

Abstract:Given the current stage of development of social work in Malaysia, the potential of harnessing the advancements in information technology (IT) for the development of social work education in Malaysia is immense. This chapter presents an argument that IT can be used as a catalyst to develop and enhance the social work profession in Malaysia. NGOs are divided into basically two groups in Malaysia, service provision groups and social justice/advocate groups. In the current thrust of Malaysia's development, IT is a tool that can play a significant role. The 7th Malaysia Plan intends to overcome this low standing by developing an IT infrastructure in order to create a strong foundation for building a knowledge-based industrial economy and information-rich society. Distance education in Malaysia is set to expand during the Seventh Malaysian Plan covering the years 1996-2000. The telesocial work concept can also be extended internationally so that trained social workers in Malaysia can access appropriate expertise outside the country, adapt the knowledge to the local context and, through the exchange of views, broaden the knowledge base of both parties.
