Abstract:Chinese local undergraduate universities are in a process of transition into universities of applied sciences. Important aspects of this include strengthening cooperation between universities and industry, cultivating applied talent needed in industry, improving students' employment rates, and promoting economic development. Internships are an important way to help students gain practical experience and deepen university-industry cooperation. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the challenges of the existing internship process in an undergraduate university in China and give suggestions to improve internship quality. Qualitative data from 35 students and 12 administrators/faculty were collected at a local undergraduate university, H University (HU), in central China, which is currently undergoing the process of becoming a university of applied sciences. The findings of the study show issues with the university's model, including communication between industry and university, internship evaluation, student guidance, and internship quality. Recommendations based on the literature are provided.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper attempts to address the challenges and improvement methods of internship programs in the process of transforming local undergraduate universities in China into application-oriented universities. Specifically: 1. **Employment Issues**: Local undergraduate universities in China face the problem of graduate employment difficulties, especially structural unemployment. The paper explores how to alleviate this problem by strengthening school-enterprise cooperation, improving students' practical abilities, and increasing employment rates. 2. **Internship Quality**: Existing internship programs have some issues, such as poor communication between schools and enterprises, incomplete internship evaluation mechanisms, and insufficient student guidance. Through case studies, the paper analyzes these problems and proposes improvement suggestions. 3. **Policy Adaptability**: The Chinese government encourages local undergraduate universities to transform into application-oriented universities to better serve local economic and social development. The paper discusses the implementation effects of these policies in practice and provides corresponding suggestions. 4. **Cultivation of Students' Practical Abilities**: The paper emphasizes the important role of internships in cultivating students' practical abilities and deepening school-enterprise cooperation. It explores how to enhance students' comprehensive qualities by optimizing internship programs. In summary, the main purpose of this paper is to identify the problems in an internship program at a local undergraduate university in China and propose specific improvement suggestions to improve the quality and effectiveness of the internship program, thereby better serving students' employment and local economic development.
