Abstract:Liver segmentation on computed tomography (CT) images is a challenging task due to the anatomic complexity and the imaging system noise. In this paper, we develop an improved level set segmentation method. Our region-based level-set approach has many advantages over the conventional active contour models. First, the improved model can get much smoother contour by adding a signed distance preserving term to evolution PDE. In addition, this modified level set function speeds up the segmentation process significantly. Second, we can obtain accurate extracted liver image by morphological filters. Therefore, our algorithm can be applied to detect the internal malignant structure of liver image. Third, it has good robustness to the presence of weak boundaries and strong noise. Experimental results show that the proposed method gives automatic and accurate liver structure segmentation.

Abstract:To study the method for the CT image enhancement of early-stage lung cancers.50 CT images of 10 patents with early-stage peripheral lung cancers were enhanced by wavelet transform combining with contrast-limited adaptive histogram equalization(clear) or(anda)daptive filter noise removal depending on the image characteristics.Results showed that pulmonary nodules had sharp margin,clear internal density and peripheral signs(e.g.pleural indentation) after managementt;he margin of tissues and organs were clear,the arrangement were obvious and the definition of lung markings increased.The image quality improved greatly after management especially in the images which had unsatisfied data.This study provides some references for the similar research.

Abstract:A new method based on wavelet transform(WT) and pseudocolor processing for enhancing multiresolution of CT image in bronchioalvelar carcinoma. The conventional compact-supported, orthogonality and approximate symmetry wavelet transform, symlet wavelets: symN(sym4,sym6,and sym8 in this paper) wavelet family, were used to decompose the CT image by 2-layer. The decomposed wavelet coefficients processed through threshold with 1000, 800, 500 respectively were used to reconstruct image. The result has shown that the algorithm based on wavelet transform enhances the CT image of bronchioavelar carcinoma over other methods. It extraordinarily improves the diagnostic precision.

Abstract:x-ray computed tomography (CT) has been widely used in clinical diagnosis as a modality of medical imaging. To decrease the radiation dose patients suffering from, sparse-view CT has gained much attention in medical imaging field. In this paper, we propose to design a variational model based on dynamic optimal transportation and total generalized variation for CT reconstruction. This is a joint task involving inverse problem and template registration. The final state image of the optimal transport problem is unknown and needs to be reconstructed through CT inversion, while the given initial state can be regarded as a template to provide some structural information for the final one. Moreover, the existence and stability of minimizers to our proposed model are shown in continuous space. In discretization with the continuity equation, we utilize the well-known staggered grid in fluid mechanics and develop a first-order algorithm based on primal-dual method for numerically solving the proposed model. Finally, numerical experiments for sparse-view CT reconstruction are exhibited to show the performance of our proposed model in recovering images with high quality and structure preservation.

Abstract:When a digital medical image is enhanced by Histogram Equalization, Homomorphic Filtering or multi-scales Retinex, the useful details of the image can not be strengthened. According to the imaging principle and medical requirement, a new method is proposed. The image is decomposed into illumination and reflection by wavelet illumination-reflection model. The details of the reflection are strengthened by soft-threshold method. The dynamic range of the illumination is reduced by Gaussian filtering in order to enhance the image. Experiments and analysis show that the method is obviously better than these algorithms.

Abstract:Bronchiolar obstruction is commonly manifested in computed tomography (CT) images as areas of decreased attenuation relative to adjacent normal lung parenchyma. The certain identification of such areas is difficult in practice, particularly if they are poorly marginated. This paper presents a novel approach to the enhancement of feature differences between normal and diseased lung parenchyma so that reliable visual assessment can be made. The method relies on a hybrid structural filtering technique which removes pulmonary vessels appearing in the CT cross-sectional images without affecting intrinsic subtle intensity details of the lung parenchyma. In order to restore possible structural distortions introduced by the hybrid filter, a feature localization process based on wavelet reconstruction of feature extrema is used. After contrast enhancement the resultant images are used to delineate region borders of the diseased areas and quantification is made with regard to the extent of the disease.

Abstract:Juxtapleural nodules were excluded from the segmented lung region in the Hounsfield unit threshold-based segmentation method. To re-include those regions in the lung region, a new approach was presented using scale-invariant feature transform and gradient vector flow models in this study. First, the scale-invariant feature transform method was utilized to detect all scale-invariant points in the binary lung region. The boundary points in the neighborhood of a scale-invariant point were collected to form the supportive boundary lines. Then, we utilized a Fourier descriptor to obtain a character representation of each supportive boundary line. Spectrum energy recognizes supportive boundaries that must be corrected. Third, the gradient vector flow-snake method was presented to correct the recognized supportive borders with a smooth profile curve, giving an ideal correction edge in those regions. Finally, the performance of the proposed method was evaluated through experiments on multiple authentic computed tomography images. The perfect results and robustness proved that the proposed method could correct the juxtapleural region precisely.

Abstract:X-ray radiation is harmful to human health. Thus, obtaining a better reconstructed image with few projection view constraints is a major challenge in the computed tomography (CT) field to reduce radiation dose. In this study, we proposed and tested a new algorithm that combines penalized weighted least-squares using total generalized variation (PWLS-TGV) and dictionary learning (DL), named PWLS-TGV-DL to address this challenge. We first presented and tested this new algorithm and evaluated it through both data simulation and physical experiments. We then analyzed experimental data in terms of image qualitative and quantitative measures, such as the structural similarity index (SSIM) and the root mean square error (RMSE). The experiments and data analysis indicated that applying the new algorithm to CT data recovered images more efficiently and yielded better results than the traditional CT image reconstruction approaches.

Abstract:The goal of this research is to put forward a high efficient method that can generate clinically useful images with improved visualization of retinal vascular image features. Methods: 1) Multiresolution decomposition of an original retinal image into subband images via 2-D wavelet transformation(WT). 2) At s = 2(1), the LLMMSE4 estimate algorithm that is applicable for nonstationary image model is used in wavelet domain to reduce noise. At s = 2(2), soft thresholding wavelet shrinkage technique is used in wavelet domain to reduce noise. At s greater than or equal to 2(3), semisoft wavelet shrinkage technique is applied in wavelet domain to further reduce noise. 3) Opening of a gray-scale A(1)(d) (f) over cap subband image by a gray-scale circular structuring element can generate a background image. Enhancement is achieved by using this opened image as a unsharp mask and then applying morphological spatial filtering technique to enhance vessel contrast. 4) Reconstruction of retinal image from modified subband images via inverse 2-DWT, Experimental results show that the proposed approach is able to adaptively enhance subtle vascular features, suppress noise and improve global visualization of retinal vascular images.

Abstract:This paper studies a new method of wavelet transform in the lossless compression of medical image.Based on it,experiment compresses 3019 lung sufferer CT images with JPEG 2000 standard.By statistic analyzing the feature of images,experimental result proves that this kind of compression method achieves the compression ration of 12.0 with high lossless compression quality.It can be used to clinic diagnoses of medical images.

Abstract:Reconstruction algorithm based on total variation (TV) minimization has become a hot topic in CT field. In order to make a better balance between suppressing noise and preserving edge, an improved variation is proposed in this paper. An anisotropic strategy is developed to effectively preserve the edges of imaging objects. Simultaneously, the unity weight in the original variation is substituted by an amplitude dependent weight to suppress the smaller variations, which arise from noise effect with a higher possibility. Numerical simulations validated that the CT reconstruction based on the improved variation has a better reconstruction performance as compared to its original counterpart.

Abstract:In X-ray CT imaging, there are some cases where the obtained CT images have serious ring artifacts and noise, and these degraded CT images seriously affect the quality of clinical diagnosis. Thus, developing an effective method that can simultaneously suppress ring artifacts and noise is of great importance. Total variation (TV) is a famous prior regularization for image denoising in the image processing field, however, for degraded CT images, it can suppress the noise but fail to reduce the ring artifacts. To address this issue, the L 0 smoothing filter is incorporated with TV prior for CT ring artifacts and noise removal problem where the problem is transformed into several optimization sub-problems which are iteratively solved. The experiments demonstrate that the ring artifacts and noise presented in the CT image can be effectively suppressed by the proposed method and meanwhile the detailed features such as edge structure can be well preserved. As the superiority of TV and L 0 smoothing filters are fully utilized, the performance of the proposed method is better than the existing methods such as the TV-based method and L 0 -based method.

Abstract:Abstract The goal of image enhancement methods is to improve image's quality. The efficacy of U‐net is evident through its extensive utilization across various significant image modalities, involving computed tomography (CT) scans, magnetic resonance imaging, X‐rays, and microscopy. In this study, we provided a novel and efficient strategy to improve lung CT images based on segmentation using U‐Net architecture. Subsequently, contrast enhancement was performed using adaptive histogram equalization and dark channel prior methods. Finally, the lightness of the lung CT image was enhanced using nonlinear mapping. The contrast enhancement performance of the suggested method is quantified by various measures like the average gradient, mean of the local standard deviation, contrast enhancement measure, and structural similarity index. The performance of the suggested method is compared against other methods, and the results indicate that the suggested method achieves better quality measures of 23.4907, 55.20341, 0.961674, and 0.4143 for the four performance metrics.

Abstract:This paper investigates an effective enhancement method for CT pulmonary vessel by using structure tensor. Firstly, based on a calculated image's structure tensor, the image's diffusion tensor is constructed. Then, the diffusion tensor is filtered with three different schemes. Finally, the result shows the effective of the proposed method. The synthetic dataset and CT Lung dataset from LIDC are used to verify this method's efficiency. The result shows the pulmonary vessels are enhanced and the images' contrast and SNR are improved. The enhancement method based on structure tensor is suitable for CT pulmonary vessel.

Abstract:Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide and this also stimulates the development of various computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) systems. But the conventional lung segmentation methods can't satisfy the needs of the clinicians in lung cancer diagnosis and surgery. It is very important to provide a segmentation and visualization framework for the clinicians instead of radiologists in outpatient service. Therefore we propose a visually guided method based on a 2D feature space and spatial connectivity computation to reduce the dependence on the radiologists for lung segmentation and visualization. Our framework consists of three main processing steps. Firstly, a 2D feature space of CT scalar versus gradient magnitude is constructed. Secondly, the attribute distribution region of the lungs is selected in the 2D feature space, and then the lungs are extracted from the determined voxels by spatial connectivity computation. Finally, the lungs and pulmonary nodules are visualized simultaneously with different colors and opacities in volume rendering. Experimental results show that the proposed framework is efficient for outpatient service and can provide an intuitive segmentation process and nodules information.

Abstract:Aiming at the process of medical diagnosis, many problems such as unclear images and low contrast are often caused by noise and interference in the process of medical image acquisition and transmission. This article proposes a new image enhancement method that combines the wavelet domain with the spatial domain. First, we input two identical images (Both of the identical images are original images.) in which the first image is enhanced by histogram equalization. Then, the two images are divided into four sub-images by a two-dimensional wavelet transform. The average of the low-frequency coefficients of the low-frequency sub-images of the two images is taken as the low-frequency coefficients of the final reconstruction. Second, aiming at the problem that the contrast may be too low, the fourth high-frequency sub-image is blurred (sharpened) twice. The fourth high-frequency sub-image after blurring is denoised by median filtering. Finally, the four sub-images are fused to obtain the enhanced image. The experimental results show that the peak signal-to-noise ratio, structural similarity, and processing time of the proposed algorithm are better than those of other contrast algorithms, especially the processing time. These objective indicators show that the proposed algorithm can not only effectively suppress noise but also significantly enhance the contrast. Subjectively, compared with other algorithms, the proposed algorithm achieves a better visual effect and greatly reduces the processing time.

Abstract:In order to solve the problem of noise amplification, low contrast and image distortion in the process of medical image enhancement, a new algorithm is proposed which combines NSCT (nonsubsampled contourlet transform) and improved fuzzy contrast. The image is decomposed by NSCT. Firstly, linear enhancement method is used in low frequency coefficients; secondly the improved adaptive threshold function is used to deal with the high frequency coefficients. Finally, the improved fuzzy contrast is used to enhance the global contrast and the Laplace operator is used to enhance the details of the medical images. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can improve the image visual effects, remove the noise and enhance the details of medical images. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract:Reconstruction of computed tomography (CT) images under sparse data conditions often leads to compromised quality, which can result in diagnostic inaccuracies. This study introduces a novel iterative reconstruction algorithm that combines a second-order differential Laplacian operator with a bilateral weighted relative total variation model to improve the CT image quality from sparse datasets. The approach is designed to efficiently capture sharp edges and fine textures while reducing noise and maintaining critical edge features. Numerical simulations and preliminary clinical testing demonstrated that the algorithm significantly reduces streak artifacts and improves image edge clarity, outperforming traditional methods in both qualitative and quantitative analyses. In summary, the developed iterative reconstruction algorithm substantially enhances the reconstruction quality of CT images with sparse data, showing significant advantages over conventional techniques, and promises to significantly improve the accuracy and reliability of clinical imaging diagnostics.

Abstract:X-ray images are often of low contrast due to the subtle distinction of attenuation coefficients and scatter effect, which makes it difficult to distinguish signals from background. This paper proposes an image enhancement algorithm using the multi-scale dyadic wavelet transform. The algorithm includes two steps: 1) In order to enhance contrast, a non-linear mapping is performed on wavelet coefficients at different scales. Inhibition factors are then applied to reduce the impact of scatter; 2) In order to reduce the negative impact of noise amplification from the first step, wavelet coefficients are classified into two categories: irregular coefficients and edge-related and regular coefficients, and then filtered with different schemes for each category. Experimental results demonstrate that this algorithm effectively enhance the contrast of x-ray images. Examination is also done on CT reconstructions from multi-view projection data processed by the proposed method and significant improvement of image quality is observed. Our results are expected to offer great help to follow-up detection and recognition tasks.

Abstract:The efficiency of image enhancement algorithms depends on the quality and processing speed of image enhancement. There are many algorithms to implement image enhancement using wavelet theory. These algorithms have one thing in common: they all capture image details by decomposing low frequency sub-images. In fact, a lot of details in high-frequency sub-images are also found. Enlightened by the above-mentioned facts, a novel medical image enhancement method based on wavelet decomposition is proposed by adding details from the high-frequency sub-images and decomposing the image specially with ant-symmetric biorthogonal wavelet instead of some traditional wavelets. It not only improves the image enhancement, but also overcomes the shortcomings of large computation with faster computational speed and satisfies the real-time requirement in edge detection. Simulation experiments of mammographic images are implemented by Matlab with several different methods, the results show that the proposed method is superior to some popular methods, such as histogram equalization and wavelet nonlinear enhancement.
