Abstract:Snow water equivalent (SWE) is a key variable in climate and hydrology studies. Yet, current SWE products mask out high-topography areas due to the coarse resolution of the satellite sensors used. The snow remote sensing community is hence pushing towards active-microwave approaches for global SWE monitoring. Designing a SWE retrieval algorithm is not trivial, as multiple combinations of snow microstructure representations and SWE can yield the same radar signal. Retrieval algorithm designs are converging towards forward modeling approaches using an educated first guess on the snowpack structure. Snow highly varies in space and time, especially in mountain environments where the complex topography affects atmospheric and snowpack state variables in numerous ways. In Canada, automatic weather stations are too sparse, and high-resolution numerical weather prediction systems have a maximal resolution of 2.5 km × 2.5 km, which is too coarse to capture snow spatial variability in a complex topography. In this study, we designed a subgridding framework for the Canadian High Resolution Deterministic Prediction System (HRDPS). The native 2.5 km × 2.5 km resolution forecast was subgridded to a 100 m × 100 m resolution and used as the input for snow modeling over two winters in Glacier National Park, British Columbia, Canada. Air temperature, relative humidity, precipitation, and wind speed were first parameterized regarding elevation using six automatic weather stations. We then used Alpine3D to spatialize atmospheric parameters and radiation input accounting for terrain reflections, and we performed the snow simulations. We evaluated modeled snowpack state variables relevant for microwave remote sensing against simulated profiles generated with automatic weather station data and compared them to simulated profiles driven by raw HRDPS data. The subgridding framework improves the optical grain size bias by 18 % on average and the modeled SWE by 16 % compared to simulations driven with raw HRDPS forecasts. This work could improve the snowpack radar backscattering modeling by up to 7 dB and serves as a basis for SWE retrieval algorithms using forward modeling in a Bayesian framework.

Abstract:The extraction of high-resolution geomorphic information from remote sensing images is a key technology for supporting mountain river research. Extracting small rivers (width < 90 m) from complex backgrounds based on satellite images remains a challenging issue. In this research, we propose an improved random forest (RF) algorithm, RF-ANN (artificial neural network), by using neural networks and thermal infrared data for the extraction of river surfaces. We also develop an automated river width extraction (ARWE) method based on the central axis transformation algorithm and centerline automatic correction algorithm for the automatic extraction of the river widths across the whole basin. We chose the Huangfuchuan River Basin on the Loess Plateau, China, as a case study area. Chinese GF-1 and ZY-3 satellite images were implemented as the primary data source. We extracted the bankfull river surface and river widths of the Huangfuchuan River by using these two improved methods. The results show that the RF-ANN method has a total river surface extraction accuracy of 94.7%, and the extracted river surfaces cover more than 85% of the order 3 DEM river network. By implementing high-resolution DEM and thermal infrared data, RF-ANN effectively eliminates the disturbance of shadows of mountains and other features, which ensures the high accuracy of the extracted widths. It was verified that the maximum and minimum river widths that can be extracted in the Huangfuchuan River Basin are 297.4 m and 6.1 m, respectively. The overall error of river width extraction is 0.97 m, which is less than half of the pixel length of remote sensing images. The R2 and root mean square error (RMSE) of the estimated river width values are 0.99 and 1.49, respectively. For tiny rivers with widths narrower than 10 m, the error of river width extraction is 10.9%. The error of thin rivers whose widths range from 10 to 30 m is 4.9%. For small rivers ranging from 30 to 90 and rivers wider than 90 m, the error is 1.1% and 0.6%, respectively. The new approach provides an effective method for extracting the surface and width of mountain rivers in topographically complex regions by using high-resolution satellite images, which may provide a database for estimating river carbon emissions and related research in fluvial morphology and water resource management.

Abstract:The capability of optical images to detect clean-ice glaciers has been well-demonstrated. Debris-covered glaciers, are different from clean-ice glaciers and are important for research of glacier mass balance. However, the main challenges to detect debris-covered glaciers in alpine regions faced by many researchers are the spectral similarity between debris-covered glaciers and the rocks and soils on both sides, as well as shadows cast from mountains, clouds and seasonal snow in satellite images. This study aimed to develop an automatic algorithm (using a Random Forest classifier model) implemented in the western Nyainqentanglha to map debris-covered glaciers based on multi-source datasets such as Sentinel-1 Synthetic Aperture Radar data, Sentinel-2 Multispectral Instrument data, Landsat-8 Thermal Infrared Sensor and Digital Elevation Models. All data was split into training (70%) and testing datasets (30%). The main strength of this study is that our method overcomes most of the above-mentioned challenges and the great accuracy (Kappa coefficient: 0.96, overall accuracy: 97.21%) of the Random Forest classifier model represents a comprehensive success in identifying debris-covered glaciers, illustrating that if this method can be executed efficiently, it will bring benefits for glacier inventory management. Additionally, an analysis of the spatial characteristic of the mountain glaciers showed that the glacier area, elevation and slope of the Nyainqentanglha Mountains were closely related. Moreover, most glacier movement occurred in glaciers with an area of less than 1 km2 and greater than 10 km2, which had mean velocities of 0.141 m/day and 0.168 m/day, respectively, and glacier movement explained the uncertainty of glacier facies mapping.

Abstract:High-resolution (HR) snow cover maps derived by remotely sensed images are an asset for data assimilation in hydrological models. However, the current satellite missions do not provide daily HR multispectral observations suitable for an accurate snow monitoring in alpine environments. On the contrary, low-resolution (LR) sensors acquire daily information of snow cover fraction (SCF) but at an inappropriate spatial scale. This article proposes a novel approach that combines multisource and multiscale acquisitions to infer the daily HR snow cover area (SCA) for mountainous basins. The approach builds on the assumption that interannual snow patterns are both affected by the local geomorphometry and meteorology. We derive these patterns through a hierarchical multistep approach based on historical statistical analyses on a long and sparse HR time-series. At each step, we obtain HR snow cover maps with higher number of reconstructed pixels but decreasing level of confidence. Historical data are used to estimate the probability that a HR pixel is covered by snow according to two possible multiscale strategies: 1) HR gap-filling, or 2) LR downscaling. These analyses lead to the identification of the patterns that regularly appear given certain conditions. When no systematic patterns are observed, we reinforce the inference of the pixel class by a generalized additive model that exploits not only the historical data, but also explicit geomorphometric, global snow, and multitemporal properties. The proposed approach has been validated on a catchment in the Sierra Nevada, USA, for three hydrological years (2017–2019) showing an average overall accuracy of 92%.

Abstract:To validate the accuracy of snow depth products retrieved from passive microwave remote sensing data with a high confidence level, the verification method based on points of ground observation is subject to great uncertainty, due to the scale effect. Thus, it is necessary to use a point-to-surface scale transformation method to obtain the relative ground truth at the remote sensing pixel scale. In this study, by using the snow depth ground observations at different observation scales, the upscaling methods are conducted based on simple average (SA), geostatistical, Bayes maximum entropy (BME), and random forest (RF) algorithms. In addition, the cross-validation of the leave-one-out method is employed to validate the upscaling results. The results show that the SA algorithm is seriously inadequate for estimating snow depth variation in space, and is only suitable for regions with relatively flat terrain and small variation of snow depth. The BME algorithm can introduce prior knowledge and perform kernel smoothing on observed data, and the upscaling result is superior to geostatistical and RF algorithms, especially when the observed data is insufficient, and outliers appear. The results of the study are expected to provide a reference for developing a point-to-surface upscaling method based on snow depth ground observations, and to further solve the uncertainties caused by scale effects in snow depth and other land surface parameter inversion and validation, by using remote sensing data.
On the Ability of LIDAR Snow Depth Measurements to Determine or Evaluate the HRU Discretization in a Land Surface Model

Abstract:To find the adequate spatial model discretization scheme, which balances the models capabilities and the demand for representing key features in reality, is a challenging task. It becomes even more challenging in high alpine catchments, where the variability of topography and meteorology over short distances strongly influences the distribution of snow cover, the dominant component in the alpine water cycle. For the high alpine Research Catchment Zugspitze (RCZ) a new method for objective delineation of hydrological response units (HRUs) using a time series of high resolution LIDAR derived snow depth maps and the physiographic properties of the RCZ is introduced. Via principle component analysis (PCA) of these maps, a dominant snow depth pattern, that turned out to be largely defined during the (winter) accumulation period was identified. This dominant pattern serves as a reference for HRU delineations on the basis of cluster analyses of the catchment’s physiographic properties. The method guarantees for an appropriate, objective, spatial discretization scheme, which allows for a reliable and meaningful reproduction of snow cover variability with the Cold Regions Hydrological Model — at the same time avoiding significant increase of computational demands. Different HRU schemes were evaluated with measured snow depth and the comparison of their model results identified significant differences in model output and best performance of the scheme which best represents measured snow depth distribution.
Identifying snowfall elevation patterns by assimilating satellite-based snow depth retrievals

Abstract:Precipitation in mountain regions is highly variable and poorly measured, posing important challenges to water resource management. Traditional methods to estimate precipitation include in-situ gauges, Doppler weather radars, satellite radars and radiometers, numerical modeling and reanalysis products. Each of these methods is unable to adequately capture complex orographic precipitation. Here, we propose a novel approach to characterize orographic snowfall over mountain regions. We use a particle batch smoother to leverage satellite information from Sentinel-1 derived snow depth retrievals and to correct various gridded precipitation products. This novel approach is tested using a simple snow model for an alpine basin located in Trentino Alto Adige, Italy. We quantify the precipitation biases across the basin and found that the assimilation method (i) corrects for snowfall biases and uncertainties, (ii) leads to cumulative snowfall elevation patterns that are consistent across precipitation products, and (iii) results in overall improved basin-wide snow variables (snow depth and snow cover area) and basin streamflow estimates.

Abstract:Imagery acquired by the Moderate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) provides a global archive of dailyNormalized Difference Snow Index (NDSI) at 500 m nominal resolution since the year 2000. While Sentinel-2 (S2) NDSI provides an increased spatial resolution of 20 m since the year 2015, the temporal resolution amounts to only 5 days and thus lacks the high temporal resolution of MODIS. Efforts to combine NDSI datasets for an increased temporal and spatial resolution have so far focused on the deriving binary snow cover maps or combining data from other sensors. In contrast, we produce fine scale (20 m) fractional snow cover (FSC) by downscaling MODIS NDSI to S2 resolution. Random forest regression predicts S2 NDSI based on dynamic features (MODIS NDSI, day-of-year) and static, topographic features for an alpine study site. Subsequently, FSC is derived from S2 NDSI. Cross-validation results in R 2 of 0.795 and RMSE of 0.155 for FSC and outperforms common resampling methods. Multi-annual S2 NDSI metrics are able to slightly improve model accuracy. Our results suggest that combining topographical data and low-resolution NDSI allows to produce daily, high-resolution S2 NDSI and FSC and improve fine scale characterization of snow cover dynamics in mountain landscapes.

Abstract:Seasonal snow plays a crucial role in society and understanding trends in snow depth and mass is essential for making informed decisions about water resources and adaptation to climate change. However, quantifying snow depth in remote, mountainous areas with complex topography remains a significant challenge. The increasing availability of high-resolution synthetic aperture radar (SAR) observations from active microwave satellites has prompted opportunistic use of the data to retrieve snow depth remotely across large spatial and frequent temporal scales and at a high spatial resolution. Nevertheless, these novel SAR-based snow depth retrieval methods face their own set of limitations, including challenges for shallow snowpacks, high vegetation cover, and wet snow conditions. In response, here we introduce a machine learning approach to enhance SAR-based snow depth estimation over the European Alps. By integrating Sentinel-1 SAR imagery, optical snow cover observations, and topographic, forest cover and snow class information, our machine learning retrieval method more accurately estimates snow depth at independent in-situ measurement sites than current methods. Further, our method provides estimates at 100 m horizontal resolution and is capable of better capturing local-scale topography-driven snow depth variability. Through detailed feature importance analysis, we identify optimal conditions for SAR data utilization, thereby providing insight into future use of C-band SAR for snow depth retrieval.

Retrieving snow depth distribution by downscaling ERA5 Reanalysis with ICESat-2 laser altimetry

Abstract:Estimating the variability of seasonal snow cover, in particular snow depth in remote areas, poses significant challenges due to limited spatial and temporal data availability. This study uses snow depth measurements from the ICESat-2 satellite laser altimeter, which are sparse in both space and time, and incorporates them with climate reanalysis data into a downscaling-calibration scheme to produce monthly gridded snow depth maps at microscale (10 m). Snow surface elevation measurements from ICESat-2 along profiles are compared to a digital elevation model to determine snow depth at each point. To efficiently turn sparse measurements into snow depth maps, a regression model is fitted to establish a relationship between the retrieved snow depth and the corresponding ERA5 Land snow depth. This relationship, referred to as subgrid variability, is then applied to downscale the monthly ERA5 Land snow depth data. The method can provide timeseries of monthly snow depth maps for the entire ERA5 time range (since 1950). The validation of downscaled snow depth data was performed at an intermediate scale (100 m x 500 m) using datasets from airborne laser scanning (ALS) in the Hardangervidda region of southern Norway. Results show that snow depth prediction achieved R2 values ranging from 0.74 to 0.88 (post-calibration). The method relies on globally available data and is applicable to other snow regions above the treeline. Though requiring area-specific calibration, our approach has the potential to provide snow depth maps in areas where no such data exist and can be used to extrapolate existing snow surveys in time and over larger areas. With this, it can offer valuable input data for hydrological, ecological or permafrost modeling tasks.

Topographic and vegetation controls of the spatial distribution of snow depth in agro-forested environments by UAV lidar

Abstract:Accurate knowledge of snow depth distributions in forested regions is crucial for applications in hydrology and ecology. In such a context, understanding and assessing the effect of vegetation and topographic conditions on snow depth variability is required. In this study, the spatial distribution of snow depth in two agro-forested sites and one coniferous site in eastern Canada was analyzed for topographic and vegetation effects on snow accumulation. Spatially distributed snow depths were derived by unmanned aerial vehicle light detection and ranging (UAV lidar) surveys conducted in 2019 and 2020. Distinct patterns of snow accumulation and erosion in open areas (fields) versus adjacent forested areas were observed in lidar-derived snow depth maps at all sites. Omnidirectional semi-variogram analysis of snow depths showed the existence of a scale break distance of less than 10 m in the forested area at all three sites, whereas open areas showed comparatively larger scale break distances (i.e., 11–14 m). The effect of vegetation and topographic variables on the spatial variability in snow depths at each site was investigated with random forest models. Results show that the underlying topography and the wind redistribution of snow along forest edges govern the snow depth variability at agro-forested sites, while forest structure variability dominates snow depth variability in the coniferous environment. These results highlight the importance of including and better representing these processes in physically based models for accurate estimates of snowpack dynamics.

Abstract:Abstract. Accurate knowledge of snow depth distributions in mountain catchments is critical for applications in hydrology and ecology. Recently, a method was proposed to map snow depth at meter-scale resolution from very-high-resolution stereo satellite imagery (e.g., Pléiades) with an accuracy close to 0.5 m. However, the validation was limited to probe measurements and unmanned aircraft vehicle (UAV) photogrammetry, which sampled a limited fraction of the topographic and snow depth variability. We improve upon this evaluation using accurate maps of the snow depth derived from Airborne Snow Observatory laser-scanning measurements in the Tuolumne river basin, USA. We find a good agreement between both datasets over a snow-covered area of 138 km2 on a 3 m grid, with a positive bias for a Pléiades snow depth of 0.08 m, a root mean square error of 0.80 m and a normalized median absolute deviation (NMAD) of 0.69 m. Satellite data capture the relationship between snow depth and elevation at the catchment scale and also small-scale features like snow drifts and avalanche deposits at a typical scale of tens of meters. The random error at the pixel level is lower in snow-free areas than in snow-covered areas, but it is reduced by a factor of 2 (NMAD of approximately 0.40 m for snow depth) when averaged to a 36 m grid. We conclude that satellite photogrammetry stands out as a convenient method to estimate the spatial distribution of snow depth in high mountain catchments.
Snow depth retrieval from microwave remote sensing by combining wavelet transform and machine learning models in Northern Xinjiang, China

Abstract:Passive microwave remote sensing is a valuable tool for snow depth estimation. However, accurate retrieval is limited by nonlinear relationships between the snow depth and passive microwave brightness temperature (TB) that are caused by snow physical properties, underlying surface type, and topographical factors. Our study aims to enhance snow depth estimation in Northern Xinjiang (NX), China, utilizing Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer 2 TB data (with a resolution of 0.1 deg) and fractional snow cover products through a combination of wavelet transform and two artificial neural network (ANN) models: feedforward neural network (FFNN) and generalized regression neural network (GRNN). The hybrid models were trained and validated using in situ snow depth observations from 44 stations across NX. Results indicate that applying wavelet transform reduces the root-mean-square error (RMSE) by 28.88% for FFNN. In the snow season of 2013 to 2014, Wavelet-GRNN (RMSE: 7.36 cm, NSE: 0.59, R: 0.78, bias: 1.68 cm) outperforms Wavelet-FFNN (RMSE: 8.26 cm, NSE: 0.48, R: 0.75, bias: 1.69 cm) by 10.90%. However, Wavelet-FFNN exhibits superior performance, up to 13.78% than Wavelet-GRNN in complex topographic areas like Xiaoquzi station. In addition, spatial–temporal estimations demonstrate that the hybrid models surpass three well-known snow depth products and alleviate issues of excessively high or low values in NX. These findings underscore the effectiveness of hybrid models combining wavelet transform and ANNs, integrating passive microwave remote sensing and auxiliary data, for accurate snow depth estimation in mountainous regions.

Abstract:As an essential data-driven model, machine learning can simulate runoff based on meteorological data at the watershed level. It has been widely used in the simulation of hydrological runoff. Considering the impact of snow cover on runoff in high-altitude mountainous areas, based on remote sensing data and atmospheric reanalysis data, in this paper we established a runoff simulation model with a random forest model and ANN (artificial neural network) model for the Xiying River Basin in the western Qilian region The verification of the measured data showed that the NSE (Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency), RMSE (root mean square error), and PBIAS (percent bias) values of the random forest model and ANN model were 0.701 and 0.748, 6.228 m3/s and 4.554 m3/s, and 4.903% and 8.329%, respectively. Considering the influence of ice and snow on runoff, the simulation accuracy of both the random forest model and ANN model was improved during the period of significant decreases in the annual snow and ice water equivalent in the Xiying River Basin from April to May, after the snow remote sensing data were introduced into the model. Specifically, for the random forest model, the NSE increased by 0.099, the RMSE decreased by 0.369 m3/s, and the PBIAS decreased by 1.689%. For the ANN model, the NSE increased by 0.207, the RMSE decreased by 0.700 m3/s, and the PBIAS decreased by 1.103%. In this study, based on remote sensing data and atmospheric reanalysis data, the random forest model and ANN model were used to effectively simulate hydrological runoff processes in high-altitude mountainous areas without observational data. In particular, the accuracy of the machine learning simulations of snowmelt runoff (especially during the snowmelt period) was effectively improved by introducing the snow remote sensing data, which can provide a methodological reference for the simulation and prediction of snowmelt runoff in alpine mountains.

Abstract:Satellite remote sensing is able to provide information on global rain and snow, but challenges remain in accurate estimation of precipitation rates, particularly in snow retrieval. In this work, the deep neural network (DNN) is applied to estimate rain and snow rates in high latitudes. The reference data for DNN training are provided by two spaceborne radars onboard the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) Core Observatory and CloudSat. Passive microwave data from the GPM Microwave Imager (GMI), infrared data from MODerate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer and environmental data from European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts are trained to the spaceborne radar-based reference precipitation. The DNN estimates are compared to data from the Goddard Profiling Algorithm (GPROF), which is used to retrieve passive microwave precipitation for the GPM mission. First, the DNN-based retrieval method performs well in both training and testing periods. Second, the DNN can reveal the advantages and disadvantages of different channels of GMI and MODerate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer. Additionally, infrared and environmental data can improve precipitation estimation of the DNN, particularly for snowfall. Finally, based on the optimized DNN, rain and snow are estimated in 2017 from orbital GMI brightness temperatures and compared to ERA-Interim and Modern-Era Retrospective analysis for Research and Applications Version 2 reanalysis data. Evaluation results show that (1) the DNN can largely mitigate the underestimation of precipitation rates in high latitudes by GPROF; (2) the DNN-based snowfall estimates largely outperform those of GPROF; and (3) the spatial distributions of DNN-based precipitation are closer to reanalysis data. The method and assessment presented in this study could potentially contribute to the substantial improvement of satellite precipitation products in high latitudes. Plain Language Summary Snow has a significant influence on the hydrological cycle and water resource availability. Compared to ground gauges and radars with limited coverage, satellite remote sensing can provide global rain and snow observations from space. However, traditional satellite precipitation retrieval methods are prone to errors in snow estimation at high latitudes. In this study, we developed a new rain and snow estimation method at high latitudes using deep neural networks. The reference data sets were from two spaceborne radars that provide the most direct precipitation observations from space. Passive microwave, infrared, and environmental data were trained to the reference data sets for rain and snow estimation. Results show that the neural network-based method can largely reduce the underestimation of rain and snow rates in high latitudes in many prior algorithms. Statistical indices for snow estimation are notably improved. Furthermore, combining data from passive microwave, infrared, and environmental data sets contribute to better precipitation estimation than a single source. We suggest that deep neural networks could potentially contribute to the improvement of satellite precipitation at high latitudes, which is valuable for expanding the spatial coverage of current satellite products.
A long-term daily gridded snow depth dataset for the Northern Hemisphere from 1980 to 2019 based on machine learning

Abstract:A high-quality snow depth product is very import for cryospheric science and its related disciplines. Current long time-series snow depth products covering the Northern Hemisphere can be divided into two categories: remote sensing snow depth products and reanalysis snow depth products. However, existing gridded snow depth products have some shortcomings. Remote sensing-derived snow depth products are temporally and spatially discontinuous and tend to underestimate snow depth, while reanalysis snow depth products have coarse spatial resolutions and great uncertainties. To overcome these problems, in our previous work we proposed a novel data fusion framework based on Random Forest Regression of snow products from Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer for the Earth Observing System (AMSR-E), Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer-2 (AMSR2), Global Snow Monitoring for Climate Research (GlobSnow), the Northern Hemisphere Snow Depth (NHSD), ERA-Interim, and Modern-Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Applications, version 2 (MERRA-2), incorporating geolocation (latitude and longitude), and topographic data (elevation), which were used as input independent variables. More than 30,000 ground observation sites were used as the dependent variable to train and validate the model in different time periods. This fusion framework resulted in a long time series of continuous daily snow depth product over the Northern Hemisphere with a spatial resolution of 0.25°. Here, we compared the fused snow depth and the original gridded snow depth products with 13,272 observation sites, showing an improved precision of our product. The evaluation indices of the fused (best original) dataset yielded a coefficient of determination R 2 of 0.81 (0.23), Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE) of 7.69 (15.86) cm, and Mean Absolute Error (MAE) of 2.74 (6.14) cm. Most of the bias (88.31%) between the fused snow depth and in situ observations was in the range of −5 cm to 5 cm. The accuracy assessment of independent snow observation sites – Sodankylä (SOD), Old Aspen (OAS), Old Black Spruce (OBS), and Old Jack Pine (OJP) – showed that the fused snow depth dataset had high precision for snow depths of less than 100 cm with a relatively homogeneous surrounding environment. The results of random point selection and independent in situ site validation show that the accuracy of the fused snow depth product is not significantly improved in deep snow areas and areas with complex terrain. In the altitude range of 100 m to 2000 m, the fused snow depth had a higher precision, with R 2 varying from 0.73 to 0.86. The fused snow depth had a decreasing trend based on the spatiotemporal analysis and Mann-Kendall trend test method. This fused snow depth product provides the basis for understanding the temporal and spatial characteristics of snow cover and their relation to climate change, hydrological and water cycle, water resource management, ecological environment, snow disaster and hazard prevention.

Abstract:For remote and vast northern watersheds, hydrological data are often sparse and incomplete. Landscape hydrology provides useful approaches for the indirect assessment of the hydrological characteristics of watersheds through analysis of landscape properties. In this study, we used unsupervised geographic object-based image analysis (GeOBIA) paired with the fuzzy c -means (FCM) clustering algorithm to produce seven high-resolution territorial classifications of key remotely sensed hydro-geomorphic metrics for the 1985–2019 time period, each with a frequency of 5 years. Our study site is the George River watershed (GRW), a 42 000 km 2 watershed located in Nunavik, northern Quebec (Canada). The subwatersheds within the GRW, used as the objects of the GeOBIA, were classified as a function of their hydrological similarities. Classification results for the period 2015–2019 showed that the GRW is composed of two main types of subwatersheds distributed along a latitudinal gradient, which indicates broad-scale differences in hydrological regimes and water balances across the GRW. Six classifications were computed for the period 1985–2014 to investigate past changes in hydrological regime. The time series of seven classifications showed a homogenization of subwatershed types associated with increases in vegetation productivity and in water contents in soil and vegetation, mostly concentrated in the northern half of the GRW, which were the major changes occurring in the land cover metrics of the GRW. An increase in vegetation productivity likely contributed to an augmentation in evaporation and may be a primary driver of fundamental shifts in the GRW water balance, potentially explaining a measured decline of about 1 % ( ∼ 0.16 km 3 yr −1 ) in the George River's discharge since the mid-1970s. Permafrost degradation over the study period also likely affected the hydrological regime and water balance of the GRW. However, the shifts in permafrost extent and active layer thickness remain difficult to detect using remote-sensing-based approaches, particularly in areas of discontinuous and sporadic permafrost.

Abstract:One of the primary causes of non-uniform snowfall deposition on the ground in mountainous regions is the preferential deposition of snow, which results from the interaction of near-surface winds with topography and snow particles. However, producing high-resolution snowfall deposition patterns can be computationally expensive due to the need to run full atmospheric models. To address this, we developed two statistical downscaling schemes that can efficiently downscale near-surface, low-resolution snowfall data to fine-scale snow deposition accounting for the effect of preferential deposition in mountainous regions. Our approach relies on a comprehensive, model database generated using 3D wind fields from an atmospheric model and a preferential deposition model on several thousand simulated topographies covering a broad range in terrain characteristics. Both snowfall downscaling schemes rely on fine-scale topographic scaling parameters and low-resolution wind speed as input. While one scheme, referred to as the "wind scheme", further necessitates fine-scale vertical wind components, a second scheme, referred to as the "aspect scheme", does not require fine-scale temporal input. We achieve this by additionally downscaling near-surface vertical wind speed solely using topographic scaling parameters and low-resolution wind direction. We assess the performance of our downscaling schemes using an independent subset of the model database on simulated topographies, model data on actual terrain, and spatially measured new snow depth obtained through a photogrammetric drone survey following a snowfall event on previously snow-free ground. While the assessments show that our downscaling schemes perform well (relative errors ≤ ±3% with modeled and ≤ ±6% with measured snowfall deposition), they also demonstrate comparable results to benchmark downscaling models. However, our schemes notably outperform the benchmark models in representing fine-scale patterns. Our downscaling schemes possess several key features, including high computational efficiency, versatility enabled by the comprehensive model database, and independence from fine-scale temporal input data (aspect scheme), indicating their potential for widespread applicability. Therefore, our downscaling schemes for near-surface snowfall and vertical wind speed can be beneficial for various applications at fine grid resolutions such as in atmospheric and climate sciences, snow hydrology, glaciology, remote sensing, and avalanche sciences.

An Approach to Improve the Spatial Resolution and Accuracy of AMSR2 Passive Microwave Snow Depth Product Using Machine Learning in Northeast China

Abstract:Snow cover plays a highly critical role in the global water cycle and energy exchange. Accurate snow depth (SD) data are important for research on hydrologic processes, climate change, and natural disaster prediction. However, existing passive microwave (PMW) SD products have high uncertainty in Northeast China owing to their coarse spatial resolution. Surface environment parameters should also be considered to reduce errors in existing SD products. Otherwise, it is difficult to accurately capture snow spatiotemporal variations, especially in a complex environment (e.g., mountain or forests areas). To improve the inversion accuracy and spatial resolution of existing SD products in Northeast China, a multifactor SD downscaling model was developed by combining PMW SD data from the AMSR2 sensor, optical snow cover extent data, and surface environmental parameters to produce fine scale (500 m × 500 m) and high precision SD data. Validations at 98 ground meteorological stations show that the developed model greatly improved the spatial resolution and inversion accuracy of the raw AMSR2 SD product; its root-mean-square error (RMSE) reduced from 26.15 cm of the raw product to 7.58 cm, and the correlation coefficient (R) increased from 0.39 to 0.53. For other SD products (WESTDC and FY), the multifactor SD downscaling model still has good applicability, it could further improve the performance of the WESTDC and FY SD products in time and space and achieve better inversion accuracy than raw SD products. Furthermore, the proposed model exhibited good agreement with the observed SD data in a field quadrat (3 km × 2 km) within the fine scale, with an error ranging between −2 and 2 cm. Compared with the existing downscaling methods, the proposed model presented the best performance.

Abstract:Snow depth monitoring is crucial for hydrology, climate research, and avalanche prediction. While traditional global navigation satellite system (GNSS) reflectometer methods offer cost-effective snow thickness retrieval, they suffer from poor accuracy and robustness, especially in complex terrains and extreme weather. This study proposes an innovative snow depth retrieval technique employing a time-series recurrent neural network with bidirectional gated recurrent units (Bi-GRUs). Unlike traditional methods using signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) features, our algorithm utilizes the detrended SNR as Bi-GRU input, aiming to enhance accuracy, particularly in low snow depths and complex terrains. SNR observations from GPS L1 carriers at stations P351 and AB33 were analyzed. The Bi-GRU algorithm demonstrated high consistency with true snow depths at station P351 (coefficient of determination: 0.9766), with the root-mean-square error (RMSE) and the mean absolute error (MAE) of 9.1559 and 6.4185 cm, respectively. Compared to traditional methods, the Bi-GRU model improved the RMSE by 30.9% and the MAE by 44.5%. At station AB33, where snow depth variations were significant, accuracy improvements of 65.6% (RMSE: 7.4905 cm) and 63.2% (MAE: 5.6074 cm) were observed. In addition, the Bi-GRU model exhibited greater robustness compared to long short-term memory. These findings highlight the efficacy of the Bi-GRU-based approach, suggesting its superiority and broader applicability.
