Abstract:"Easter eggs. Workshops of museum education at the History Museum in Turda, Cluj County The pedagogical programme of the History Museum in Turda, had a great evolution in 2019, by providing 11 interactive workshops to students, in order to improve their talents, extracurricular work and to develop their skills in several domains. Our ‘Easter egg painting’ programme stands for continuing the tradition by meetings between artisans and public, through the interactive workshops, not just as demonstration. In the seven editions, there were organized around 30 workshops, with more than 500 participants, students and adults from Turda, Cluj-Napoca and surrounding areas, activity which was very much appreciated. The purpose of this workshop is to convey the correct value of the egg painting activity to a large and diverse public, so that they perceive it as important as the pottery and glass painting. Our workshops go through all the stages of the egg painting, decorating with the archaic techniques of successive color baths, protecting with bee wax, decorated with vegetal, zoomorphic, solar and more. The colors used are also limited to the traditional ones, monochrome or polychrome – red, white, yellow and black. Via this workshop, made in the old times at the countryside, the museum has direct implication in the preservation of traditional handcraft, loaded with symbolism. Abstract:In this paper, we explore how textile pattern-making can be a useful activity for live coders used to manipulating software. We ran an algorithmic patterns workshop in July 2022 -- with a node at "on the fly" festival in Barcelona, a node in Sheffield and the workshop leader in Penryn -- where we created an activity recreating ancient patterns by weaving on tablet looms that we constructed from card and yarn, and sent to the participants for this remote, multi location workshop. One of the aims of the Algorithmic Pattern project is to highlight the relationship people have had with patterns over history, and how we can use this to uncover certain misconceptions we have about algorithmic patterns in contemporary society. We collected responses from those who participated in the workshop and collated the responses. We found that tablet weaving allows us to connect the physical patterns with their algorithmic descriptions. Also, errors relate with the trade-off among expectations and surprise and exploring new unexpected possibilities. Finally, sharing the experiences among the participants allows us to observe how we interpret patterns when comparing it with other experiences.

Abstract:Inspired by the composition characteristics of Escher's images, we noticed that regular mosaic patterns can be interconverted from background to foreground smoothly by gradually changing borders of mosaic shapes in a non-linear way. Based on this, we developed an interactive system to assist children in creating artworks of pattern evolution. In this paper, taking the child's graffti patterns as a source of inspiration, our system employed interactive GA (IGAs) to achieve the transformation and evolution of patterns as well as the positive and negative conjunction among any two or more patterns. Our developed system aims to not only help children complete the art creations for the transformation and conjunction of innovative positive and negative forms among patterns, but also inspire the development of their brain which is the original purpose of building the system.

Abstract:The spiritual achievements of our ancestors are reflected in objects of material culture, namely, in decorative and applied art. The works of which contain knowledge of aesthetic ideals, and educate cultural and ethical tastes by introducing customs and ceremonies, as a manifestation of the artistic and cultural heritage of our people.The article reveals certain aspects of the art of Easter egg painting (pysankarstva), its place and role in modern decorative and applied art.The analysis of modern studies, which highlight the peculiarities of writing the Ukrainian Easter egg (pysanka), and its influence on the shaping of the younger generation’s spiritual culture, shows the art historians and ethnographers’ considerable attention. Considerable research material has been accumulated on the raised issue, which reflects the views of various scientists.Based on the literary sources research, it was concluded that the art of Easter egg painting (pysanka) on the territory of Ukraine has deep roots and centuries-old traditions (V. Shcherbakivskyi, M. Sumtsov, S. Taranuschenko, O. Kolberg, F. Krchek, V. Shukhevich, M. Korduba, M. Skoryk, I. Gugula, O. Bilous, Z. Stashuk, I. Mikhalevich, O. Solomchenko, V. Mytsyk).The purpose of the article is to reveal the peculiarities of teaching the art of calligraphy, as a type of decorative and applied art, for students of higher education in pedagogical specialties in a higher educational institution.Pysankas of ancient times, as well as those made much later, contain elements of spring rituals, which were associated with the beginning of the new year and the beginning of the growth of vegetation. Almost every Easter egg has an image of the sun, which actually symbolized the egg itself.It has been found out that our ancestors used the symbols applied to the eggshell to transmit magical, magical signs that carried a certain system of wishes, goodness, happiness, protection from natural elements, understanding of the universe and oneʼs place in it. This is the so-called “written system”. Pysanka has been a talisman of Ukrainians since ancient times. Only the Ukrainian people managed to preserve the symbolic symbolism of the Easter egg, to convey to our time the idea of life in such an expressive, profound and concise manner.It was found that the revival of ancient Ukrainian traditions and customs and their use in the process of pre-service teachers’ training will contribute to the development of imagination, thinking, and the formation of a positive attitude to work. Abstract: Human artists often do the design of art patterns manually. The designer first imagines the art patterns in his mind, and then draws them on paper or canvas. This process is repeated until the desirable art patterns are created. It is time consuming and the novelty of the resulting art patterns is limited to the human’s imagination, which is difficult to meet the requirements for a huge amount of art patterns in a manufacturing industry such as textile. This chapter will mainly discuss how to let the computer assist in the generation of the art patterns, including: (1) Art pattern creation by fractals. It is based on the principles of fractal geometry, and performs the numerical calculation by the iterative function system. The output of the numerical data are colored to generate the resultant art patterns. (2) Art pattern creation by shape grammars. Shape grammars specify a mechanism for selecting and performing recursive rules for shape computations. The computer handles the representation and computation of shapes, rules, and the presentation of correct design alternatives. This frees the designer to specify, explore, develop design languages in terms of the shape grammar, and select alternatives for the desirable art patterns. (3) Layout-based creation of art patterns. Three basic layout-based art pattern design methods are presented: (a) How to convert the graphical layout into the resulting art patterns in terms of the specified structure of craftwork. (b) How to create an aesthetic layout of an art pattern by the regular layout. (c) How to automatically/semi-automatically place the user specified graphical entities by a specific artistic style. (4) Knowledge-based creation of art patterns. The artificial intelligence techniques are employed to represent the design knowledge and aesthetic conventions of art patterns, and then generate the resultant art patterns by reasoning on them.
Changing rounds into squares or combining stripes: Diversity and formation of checkerboard patterns in Eukaryotes

Abstract:Important in many human artistic cultures, checkerboard patterns are rare in nature like many motifs based on squared geometry. Nevertheless, they are expected to be very detectable by the visual networks due to their periodic geometry, and diverse plant and animal species bear them, suggesting specific biological functions. Here, thanks to a biological survey, we first draw the diversity of species bearing checkerboard patterns. Then, we selected two genera, Sarcophaga flies and Fritillaria flowers to perform simulations and functional studies to decipher the mechanisms producing these very peculiar patterns. Although they share a similar geometry, these two genera appear to produce checkered patterns through two very different ways, showing a convergence of shape but not of mechanism. Together, this shows the extent of the mechanisms selected during evolution to generate complex forms, and confirms the importance of describing color patterns through the species diversity

Abstract:Cuckoo–host interactions provide classical examples of coevolution. Cuckoos place hosts under selection to detect and reject foreign eggs, while host defences result in the evolution of host-egg mimicry in cuckoos. Despite a long history of research, egg pattern mimicry has never been objectively quantified, and so its coevolution with host defences has not been properly assessed. Here, we use digital image analysis and modelling of avian vision to quantify the level of pattern mimicry in eight host species of the common cuckoo Cuculus canorus and their respective cuckoo host-races. We measure a range of pattern attributes, including marking size, diversity in size, contrast, coverage and dispersion. This new technique reveals hitherto unnoticed sophistication in egg pattern mimicry. We show that various features of host egg pattern are mimicked by the eggs of their respective cuckoo host-races, and that cuckoos have evolved better pattern mimicry for host species that exhibit stronger egg rejection. Pattern differs relatively more between eggs of different host species than between their respective cuckoo host-races. We suggest that cuckoos may have more ‘average’ markings in order to be able to use subsidiary hosts. Our study sheds new light on cuckoo–host coevolution and illustrates a new technique for quantifying animal markings with respect to the relevant animal visual system.

Abstract:Background: The maker movement in recent years has shed light on the blurring boundaries between crafts, creativity, and technology. Tools are a key part of the creation process, shaping both our process of making and the objects we make. They do so through their form and material influence, the matter they can handle, as well as the skills needed to utilize them. Often, tools also evoke stereotypical associations of who is using them and what is being produced with them. Findings and conclusions: In the following, I focus on needlework tools and the crafting of electronic textiles. I introduce research into the shape and aesthetics of needlework tools that incorporate the functionality of electronic probes. On a functional level, they can be used to construct pieces of textile crafts as well as to connect and test their electrical functions while making. On a metaphorical level, they allude to a possible alternative realm of creating electronic devices and components. In connecting the skills and aesthetics of textile crafting to electronic objects, we want to spark an exchange between different making cultures and enable diverse approaches for expression.

Abstract:The wrong way to conduct an Easter egg hunt is to tell the kid where every egg is hidden. That's no fun; the kid is robbed of joy. The other wrong (no fun) way is to let the kid wander in circles, fruitlessly searching and never finding while the adult-in-charge abdicates supervising responsibility. The kid is robbed of a self-concept as a capable, powerful being. Psychotherapy is the orderly process of recovering or uncovering the personal power in each of us. When therapists, answering their own needs and anxieties, over-conduct the process by making decisions for, subtly controlling direction, or thinking for, clients are invited into a rebellious and/or over-compliant response which robs them of perception of both power and joy. However, conducted as a mutual partnership, the therapist peaceful within, the client freed to use his or her own wit, will, and creativity, psychotherapy becomes an event of discovering power and joy, in short, an Easter egg hunt.

Abstract:This research aims to study designing puzzle shapes techniques and their use in teaching children. Puzzle games contribute to developing cognitive, sensory, and motor skills that require concentration and logical thinking, which can be effective in stimulating learning in children and developing their mental skills. The design idea was studied in terms of simplicity, complexity, types of traditional and digital puzzle games, and their use. Structural elements in design, such as drawings, shapes, and typographic elements, according to the Gestalt theory in designing puzzle shapes that aim to teach children, and verifying their effectiveness in stimulating their learning. This study also included an analysis of some of the techniques used in designing puzzle shapes and some mechanisms and theories of learning through games.

Abstract:I remember the magic of looking through a kaleidoscope as a little girl. Brilliant, vibrant colors coming together to make symmetrical shapes that seemed as precise as they were chaotic. Each look through the lens offered something new and spectacular, different than the intricate images seen before. With a little shake and turning of a tube and the sound of colored beads, pebbles, or small pieces of glass swirling together, mirrors connect with the light in just a way to produce the beauty that we see. Who would have thought that such a small disruption leading to the destruction of a pattern could make room for the same materials to come together again to form something fantastic, though different? Each turn or shake of a kaleidoscope could represent life changes or new perspectives that require some level of deconstruction before evolving into magnificence. Or you can simply be a kid who likes pretty pictures and wild shapes, experiencing joy and the spirit of adventure with each look. Whatever your experience, interpretation, or developmental stage, kaleidoscopes allow us to appreciate wonder, creativity, and the power of play, all rolled into one mercurial lens.

Abstract:We present how we have created a series of bilingual (English and Welsh) STEM activities focusing on rainbows, colours, light and optical effects. The activities were motivated by the many rainbows that appeared in windows in the UK, in support of the National Health Service at the start of the coronavirus pandemic. Rainbows are hopeful and are very fitting to be used as a positive iconic image at a time of much uncertainty. In this paper we explain how we have developed and organised the activities, focusing on colours, computer graphics and computer programming. Each lesson contains one or more activities, which enable people to take an active role in their learning. We have carefully prepared and organised several processes to guide academic colleagues to create and publish different activities in the theme. Which means that the activities appear similarly structured, can be categorised and searched in a consistent way. This structure can act as a blueprint for others to follow and apply to develop their own online course. The activities incrementally take people through learning about colour, rainbows, planning what to program, design and strategies to create colourful pictures using simple computer graphics principles based in <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://processing.org" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>.

Abstract:Bugs in Scratch programs can spoil the fun and inhibit learning success. Many common bugs are the result of recurring patterns of bad code. In this paper we present a collection of common code patterns that typically hint at bugs in Scratch programs, and the LitterBox tool which can automatically detect them. We empirically evaluate how frequently these patterns occur, and how severe their consequences usually are. Abstract:Round pattern, also known as round nest pattern. It is one of the most common patterns in ancient China, that is, symmetrical radial or rotating round decorative patterns around. Such patterns are often found on ancient bronze ware, ceramics, weaving and embroidery products, and modern silk fabrics. Round pattern is an important part of the study of Chinese costume patterns, which contains the cultural concepts that Chinese people yearning for perfection, auspiciousness, reunion, harmony and beauty. Cloud bat pattern, rich and noble peony pattern, colorful cloud pattern, sitting dragon pattern, phoenix pattern, butterfly pattern, and so on, the subject matter is numerous. Central symmetry type, Tai Chi type corresponding type, rotary radiation type, asymmetric flower type, and so on, the style is rich. Among them, the Qing Dynasty appeared a round pattern with character stories and relatively free composition. The pattern of the character round has unique characteristics of the Times. On the basis of the aesthetic feeling of the round flower form, it integrates the plot of the characters, reflecting the characteristics of the social customs and aesthetic taste at that time, and establishes a bridge for the traditional pattern and custom illustration.

The diversity of traditional patterns starts from the level of cultural development, and plays a key role in the impact on people's life development and the inheritance, promotion and integration of traditional culture. Abstract:In the modern world, there is a need to foster creative attitudes from an early age. Guilford’s and Lowenfeld’s research has proven that developing a creative attitude through fields related to art (art and music) and technology is reflected in the development of creativity in later life, e.g., in learning process. Children have an innate need to create, transform and experiment. This is especially noticeable at pre-school and early school age when they are keenly interested in the objects and phenomena surrounding them. Handicrafts use natural materials in an unconventional way and provide children with real tools. They create surprising, new and curiosity-stimulating situations in which children can develop creative attitudes. The article describes the method of conducting classes according to a selected scenario (tic-tac-toe game) in a private kindergarten near Warsaw, where a pedagogical innovation was carried out involving the implementation of handicraft classes in the 2022/2023 school year. Pedagogical observation made it possible to draw the conclusion that handicraft workshops support the development of creative attitudes in preschool children and influence their agency, while the adult’s openness to implementing children’s ideas into practice strengthens children’s self-motivation and sense of coherence.

Abstract:In this report we explore the implications of some challenging pattern problem solving tasks in the development of mathematical ability and creativity of students (future teachers). Solving challenging tasks usually requires creative thinking and our recent work in a project about patterns in the teaching and learning of mathematics showed that patterns can give a positive contribution to the development of mathematical ability and creativity for all students. So our main concern is to analyze, through some elementary classroom episodes, the contribution of pattern tasks to promote creative solutions by students.
