Abstract:Due to the high safety, long service life and outstanding energy density, lithium ion batteries (LIBs) have been widely used in portable energy storage devices. However, the uneven distribution and increasingly high price of lithium resources have hindered the further use of LIBs, particularly for large-scale energy storage. Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) that have the same working principle as LIBs have, emerged as some of the most promising candidate devices for use in large-scale energy storage applications and low-speed electric automobiles, due to the low cost and abundant reserves of sodium resources. As a key component of SIBs, the cathode materials have a remarkable effect on the electrochemical performance. Layered transition metal oxides have been considered to be some of the most promising cathodes for SIBs due to their flexibility, versatility, and excellent electrochemical performances. Although layered materials face several challenges such as irreversible phase transition, inferior capacity retention and poor air stability, recent experimental studies have proposed corresponding strategies to solve these problems. Herein, we will survey the latest progress in the development of high-energy SIBs cathodes focusing on high-voltage, high-capacity and composite-structure cathode materials.

Abstract:We comprehensively summarize and analyze the latest research results in the field of layered oxide cathode materials for lithium‐ion and sodium‐ion batteries, covering aspects such as failure mechanisms, modification methods, electrochemical performance, and comparisons of the characteristics of layered oxide cathode materials in lithium and sodium batteries. Layered oxide materials are widely used in the field of energy storage and conversion due to their high specific energy, high efficiency, long cycle life, and high safety. Herein, We summarize the latest research progress in the field of layered metal oxide cathode materials from three aspects: challenges faced, failure mechanisms, and modification methods. We also compare the characteristics of lithium‐based layered oxides and sodium‐based layered oxides, and predict future development directions. The layered oxide cathode materials for sodium‐ion batteries and lithium‐ion batteries exhibit overall structural and operational similarities. There are also some differences, such as lattice parameters and application extent. Sodium‐ion battery cathode materials need to explore new materials and address structural instability issues, while lithium‐ion batteries require finding alternative materials and improving production efficiency. Future challenges for both types of materials include enhancing capacity and cycle performance, elucidating deep mechanisms, reducing costs, and improving resource sustainability. Future development should focus on balancing cycle stability and charge cut‐off voltage to meet the growing demand for battery applications.

Abstract:The proportion of new energy power generation gets higher and higher, due to the depletion of fossil energy resources. However, new energy power is generally unstable, so that it is necessary to use energy storage batteries to balance the power peak and valley. Although lithium-ion batteries have been widely used in various fields, in particular for large-scale energy storage, the low abundance of lithium in the earth crust makes it untenable to meet the ever-intense future demand. Sodium ion batteries, which have similar energy storage mechanism to lithium-ion batteries, have attracted significant attentions due to their abundant raw material resources, low cost, and fairly high energy densities. Layered transition metal oxides are a class of the most promising cathode materials for sodium ion batteries, owing to their high theoretical specific capacities, good conductivity, and fast diffusion kinetics. In this paper, we conduct a comprehensive review of the electrochemical performance, structural characteristics, performance shortcomings and modification technologies about the O3- and P2-type layered transition metal oxide cathode materials. The application potentials of layered materials are summarized and analyzed, which provides a reference for the industry to select the most promising and practical layered cathode material for sodium ion batteries.

A perspective on the future development of Na‐based layered transition metal oxides is presented. This review is expected to provide a new avenue for designing layered cathodes. Low‐cost sodium‐ion batteries (SIBs) have been extensively considered as a supplement or even a replacement for successful lithium‐ion batteries. However, the practical application of SIBs is limited by their energy density and cyclic performance, which are mainly constrained by the cathode side. Therefore, the development of advanced cathode materials is essential for the practical application of SIBs. Among the various cathode materials, layered transition metal oxides (LTMOs) are highly promising candidates due to their compact crystal structure, low‐cost, ease of preparation, and similarities to successful Li‐based LTMOs. Unfortunately, the bottleneck issues faced by Na‐based LTMOs, such as severe phase transitions, sluggish diffusion kinetics, and interface deterioration, pose significant challenges in achieving high‐performance cathodes. In this review, a comprehensive overview and summary of recently reported modification strategies for layered oxides are provided and the structure–function–performance relationship is refined. A perspective on the outlook and development direction for Na‐based LTMOs cathodes is also provided. This review comprehensively explores the modification strategies of Na‐based LTMOs, providing a new horizon for future research on Na‐based LTMOs.

Abstract:Sodium‐ion batteries are in high demand for large‐scale energy storage applications. Although it is the most prevalent cathode, layered oxide is associated with significant undesirable characteristics, such as multiple plateaus in the charge−discharge profiles, and cation migration during repeated cycling of Na‐ions insertion and extraction, which results in sluggish kinetics, capacity loss, and structural deterioration. Here, a new strategy, i.e., the manipulation of transition‐metal ordering in layered oxides, is proposed to show a prolonged charge−discharge plateau and cation‐migration‐free structural evolution. The results demonstrate that the transition‐metal ordering with a honeycomb‐type superlattice can adjust the crystal lattice and suppress cation migration by modifying the crystal strain to realize a large reversible capacity and excellent cycling performance, which are not characteristics of the widely used common layered oxides. These findings can provide new insight that can be used to improve the design of high‐performance electrode materials for secondary‐ion batteries.

Abstract:Due to the obvious benefits of abundant resources and low cost of sodium, sodium-ion batteries have enormous development potential and a broad market outlook in the field of large-scale energy storage and low-speed electric cars. Layered oxide cathode material is considered as one of the most promising cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries due to its high energy density, rich variety, simple synthesis method and low environmental pollution. However, the layered oxides of sodium-ion batteries suffer from instability in air storage and unstable electrochemical performance during cycling. This review summarizes surface and bulk structural evolution in air exposure and during cycling to reveal the relationship between structure evolution, charge transfer mechanisms and electrochemical performance, which is of great significance for designing advanced electrode materials. The strategies based on the degradation mechanisms for layered oxides cathode materials are also discussed for the future development and industrialized application. We hope that this review will provide a basis for an accurate understanding of the structural evolution of layered oxides and provide some inspiration for the design and development of electrochemical systems with excellent performance.

Abstract:Recent progress in layered oxide cathodes for sodium‐ion batteries (SIBs) from air stability, interface chemistry, and phase transition are comprehensively summarized. The intrinsic degradation mechanisms behind electrochemical performance and mainstream modification strategies are systematically sorted out and analyzed. The remaining challenges, promising optimization strategies as well as endeavor directions to break current limitations are also presented for the future design of high‐performance layered oxide cathodes for SIBs. Sodium‐ion batteries (SIBs) are considered as a low‐cost complementary or alternative system to prestigious lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs) because of their similar working principle to LIBs, cost‐effectiveness, and sustainable availability of sodium resources, especially in large‐scale energy storage systems (EESs). Among various cathode candidates for SIBs, Na‐based layered transition metal oxides have received extensive attention for their relatively large specific capacity, high operating potential, facile synthesis, and environmental benignity. However, there are a series of fatal issues in terms of poor air stability, unstable cathode/electrolyte interphase, and irreversible phase transition that lead to unsatisfactory battery performance from the perspective of preparation to application, outside to inside of layered oxide cathodes, which severely limit their practical application. This work is meant to review these critical problems associated with layered oxide cathodes to understand their fundamental roots and degradation mechanisms, and to provide a comprehensive summary of mainstream modification strategies including chemical substitution, surface modification, structure modulation, and so forth, concentrating on how to improve air stability, reduce interfacial side reaction, and suppress phase transition for realizing high structural reversibility, fast Na+ kinetics, and superior comprehensive electrochemical performance. The advantages and disadvantages of different strategies are discussed, and insights into future challenges and opportunities for layered oxide cathodes are also presented.

Abstract:Development and discovery of cathode materials with superior performance seem to be tremendous challenges for Li-ion battery scientists. Since the topotactic reaction was first demonstrated in the 1970s, layered Li transition metal oxides (LiMO2, M = Co, Ni, Mn) have been a shining star throughout the research and innovation in intercalation materials due to their appealing merits. Generally the basic LiMO2 with a single kind of transition metal ion suffers from safety concerns and structural instability and can not support high energy Li-ion batteries. Nowadays, Li-stoichiometric mixed metal oxides and Li-excess Mn-based oxides have been considered as the most promising families of cathode materials for large-scale Li-ion batteries with high energy density used for transportation. In the present paper, with the help of a phase diagram tetrahedron, we provide an overview of the major developments in the field of LiMO2 cathode materials. The changes in structure during Li extraction and the phase compatibility of Li mixed metal oxides are highlighted. The latest progress in the research of Li-excess Mn-based oxides is also included.

Abstract:Considering the ever‐growing climatic degeneration, sustainable and renewable energy sources are needed to be effectively integrated into the grid through large‐scale electrochemical energy storage and conversion (EESC) technologies. With regard to their competent benefit in cost and sustainable supply of resource, room‐temperature sodium‐ion batteries (SIBs) have shown great promise in EESC, triumphing over other battery systems on the market. As one of the most fascinating cathode materials due to the simple synthesis process, large specific capacity, and high ionic conductivity, Na‐based layered transition metal oxide cathodes commonly suffer from the sluggish kinetics, multiphase evolution, poor air stability, and insufficient comprehensive performance, restricting their commercialization application. Here, this review summarizes the recent advances in layered oxide cathode materials for SIBs through different optimal structure modulation technologies, with an emphasis placed on strategies to boost Na+ kinetics and reduce the irreversible phase transition as well as enhance the store stability. Meanwhile, a thorough and in‐depth systematical investigation of the structure–function–property relationship is also discussed, and the challenges as well as opportunities for practical application electrode materials are sketched. The insights brought forward in this review can be considered as a guide for SIBs in next‐generation EESC.

Abstract:Abstract Considering the abundance and low price of sodium, sodium‐ion batteries (SIBs) have shown great potential as an alternative to existing lithium‐based batteries in large‐scale energy storage systems, including electric automobiles and smart grids. Cathode materials, which largely decide the cost and the electrochemical performance of the full SIBs, have been extensively studied. Among the reported cathodes, layered transition‐metal oxides (LTMOs) are regarded as the most extremely promising candidates for the commercial application of the SIBs owing to their high specific capacity, superior redox potential, and suitable scalable preparation. Nevertheless, irreversible structural evolution, sluggish kinetics, and water sensitivity are still the critical bottlenecks for their practical utilization. Nanoengineering may offer an opportunity to address the above issues by increasing reactivity, shortening diffusion pathways, and strengthening structural stability. Herein, a comprehensive summary of the modification strategies for LTMOs is presented, emphasizing optimizing the structure, restraining detrimental phase transition, and promoting diffusion kinetics. This review intends to facilitate an in‐depth understanding of structure–composition–property correlation and offer guidance to the further development of the LTMO cathodes for next‐generation energy storage systems.

Abstract:Layered 3d transition metal oxides, as crucial electrode materials, are essential for advanced lithium‐ion (LIBs) and sodium‐ion batteries (SIBs). This review thoroughly discusses the differences and links between lithium and sodium 3d transition metal layered oxides. This is emphasized that their synergistic development can drive the creation of new materials and insights. Due to their stable crystal framework, promising energy density, and structural versatility, layered 3d transition metal oxides have emerged as the preferred cathodes for lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs) and sodium‐ion batteries (SIBs). While extensive research has individually addressed the lithium and sodium 3d transition metal layered oxides, the differences and interconnections between the two types of materials have largely been overlooked. Effectively utilizing these summaries is essential for driving innovative structural designs and inspiring new insights into the structure‐property relationships. This review comprehensively bridges this gap by meticulously examining the disparities and links in the behavior of the layered oxides upon Li+ and Na+ storage and transfer. Key aspects, including atomic and electronic structure, phase transition mechanisms, charge compensation mechanisms and electrochemical kinetics, are carefully summarized. The implications of these aspects on the battery cycle life, energy density, and rate capability are thoroughly discussed. Additionally, by leveraging the unique characteristics of each oxide structure, this review explores the interconnection between lithium and sodium layered oxides in depth. Finally, a concise perspective on future targets and direction of 3d layered oxides is deduced and proposed.

Abstract:The rapid rise of renewable energy technology has greatly promoted the development of energy storage systems. Breaking decades of stagnation, sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) have now regained momentum in the field of energy storage and they are considered as a low-cost alternative to lithium-ion batteries. The search for suitable materials to reversibly host sodium ions has become a focal point in SIB field. Layered transition metal oxide (Na x TMO 2 ) as the cathode material has attracted increasing attention due to its simple structure, facile synthesis, and high operating potential. Nevertheless, Na x TMO 2 still faces severe challenges, including irreversible phase transitions, storage instability, insufficient performance, etc. This work provides a comprehensive review of Na x TMO 2 as the cathode material for SIBs, analyzes the challenges encountered by Na x TMO 2 , and summarizes effective improvement strategies. Strategies including doping, composite cathode materials, high-entropy materials and microstructural modulation can effectively guide the design of Na x TMO 2 with excellent performance. SIBs are bound to play a positive role in the new round of energy revolution.

Abstract:An integrated strategy combing the high‐entropy design with the superlattice‐stabilization is reported to extend the cycle life and enhance the rate capability of layered cathodes. Interestingly, the proposed cathode realized a fast and reversible O3–P3 phase transition at low voltage regions but suppressed phase transition and reversible oxygen redox at high voltage regions. Layered transition metal oxides are appealing cathodes for sodium‐ion batteries due to their overall advantages in energy density and cost. But their stabilities are usually compromised by the complicated phase transition and the oxygen redox, particularly when operating at high voltages, leading to poor structural stability and substantial capacity loss. Here an integrated strategy combing the high‐entropy design with the superlattice‐stabilization to extend the cycle life and enhance the rate capability of layered cathodes is reported. It is shown that the as‐prepared high‐entropy Na2/3Li1/6Fe1/6Co1/6Ni1/6Mn1/3O2 cathode enables a superlattice structure with Li/transition metal ordering and delivers excellent electrochemical performance that is not affected by the presence of phase transition and oxygen redox. It achieves a high reversible capacity (171.2 mAh g−1 at 0.1 C), a high energy density (531 Wh kg−1), extended cycling stability (89.3% capacity retention at 1 C for 90 cycles and 63.7% capacity retention at 5 C after 300 cycles), and excellent fast‐charging capability (78 mAh g−1 at 10 C). This strategy would inspire more rational designs that can be leveraged to improve the reliability of layered cathodes for secondary‐ion batteries.

Abstract:Energy-storage systems and their production have attracted significant interest for practical applications. Batteries are the foundation of sustainable energy sources for electric vehicles (EVs), portable electronic devices (PEDs), etc. In recent decades, Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have been extensively utilized in large-scale energy storage devices owing to their long cycle life and high energy density. However, the high cost and limited availability of Li are the two main obstacles for LIBs. In this regard, sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) are attractive alternatives to LIBs for large-scale energy storage systems because of the abundance and low cost of sodium materials. Cathode is one of the most important components in the battery, which limits cost and performance of a battery. Among the classified cathode structures, layered structure materials have attracted attention because of their high ionic conductivity, fast diffusion rate, and high specific capacity. Here, we present a comprehensive review of the classification of layered structures and the preparation of layered materials. Furthermore, the review article discusses extensively about the issues of the layered materials, namely (1) electrochemical degradation, (2) irreversible structural changes, and (3) structural instability, and also it provides strategies to overcome the issues such as elemental phase composition, a small amount of elemental doping, structural design, and surface alteration for emerging SIBs. In addition, the article discusses about the recent research development on layered unary, binary, ternary, quaternary, quinary, and senary-based O3- and P2-type cathode materials for high-energy SIBs. This review article provides useful information for the development of high-energy layered sodium transition metal oxide P2 and O3-cathode materials for practical SIBs.

Abstract:As one of the most promising secondary batteries in large-scale energy storage, sodium ion batteries (SIBs) have attracted wide attention due to the abundant raw materials and low cost. Layered transition metal oxides are one kind of popular cathode material candidates because of its easy synthesis and large theoretical specific capacity. Yet, the most common P2 and O3 phases show distinct structural characteristics respectively. O3 phase can serve as a sodium reservoir, but it usually suffers from serious phase transition and sluggish kinetics. For the P2 phase, it allows the fast sodium ion migration in the bulk and the structure can maintain stable, but it is lack of sodium, showing a great negative effect on Coulombic efficiency in full cell. Thus, single phase structure almost cannot achieve satisfied comprehensive sodium storage performances. Under these circumstances, exploiting novel multiphase cathodes showing synergetic effect may give solution to these problems. In this review, we summarize the recent development of multiphase layered transition metal oxide cathodes of SIBs, analyze the mechanism and prospect the future potential research directions.

Abstract:Sodium-ion batteries are promising for large-scale energy storage due to sodium's low cost and infinite abundance. The most popular cathodes for sodium-ion batteries, i.e., the layered sodium-containing oxides, usually exhibit reversible host rearrangement between P-type and O-type stacking upon charge/discharge. Herein we demonstrate that such host rearrangement is unfavorable and can be suppressed by introducing transition-metal ions into sodium layers. The electrode with stabilized P3-type stacking delivers superior rate capability, high energy efficiency, and excellent cycling performance. Owing to the cation-mixing nature, it performs the lowest lattice strain among all reported cathodes for sodium-ion batteries. Our findings highlight the significance of a stable host for sodium-ion storage and moreover underline the fundamental distinction in material design strategy between lithium- and sodium-ion batteries.
