Abstract:Costly punishment and reward have been regarded as potential mechanisms to handle the conundrum of cooperation, while providing mechanisms is costly, so it is crucial to explore effective strategies. Recently, a work has studied another type of punishment with evolutionary advantages, "pure punishment", but if tax is considered, the situation regarding the underlying strategies responsible for the evolution of cooperation is unclear. Here, we extend pure punishment, called "tax-based pure punishment" motivated by the fact that in realistic world, the dedicated agencies are established and additionally receive a certain amount of revenue from tax to specialized penalize evildoers. As an alternative strategy, we present "tax-based pure reward" and provide a comparative analysis for the evolutionary dynamics of aforementioned two strategies. We find that tax-based pure punishment (reward) has evolutionary advantage over pure punishment (reward) at sustaining cooperation, and tax-based pure reward can lead to higher levels of cooperation than tax-based pure punishment.
