Abstract:For a class of feedforward nonlinear systems, we systematically solve the global adaptive stabilization problem. The proposed adaptive stabilizer consists of a nested saturation feedback and a tuning mechanism, which is constituted by a set of switching logics and is used to adaptively tune the saturation levels in a switching manner. It is proved that under the proposed control, global asymptotic regulation of states is achieved. The class of systems can be of arbitrary dynamic order, the contained uncertain nonlinearities need not be explicitly bounded, and even the form of nonlinearities can also be unknown.

Abstract:This paper is focused on the problem of robustly stabilizing linear uncertain time-delay systems when the full states can not be measured. The systems under consideration are linear systems with time-varying unknown-but-bounded uncertainty and delayed state. An observerbased dynamic output feedback controller is presented to quadratically stabilize the system. A sufficient condition for the robust output feedback stabilizability of the system is derived based on Riccati equation approach and the control law can be constructed by solving two algebraic Riccati equations. Finally, a numerical example is presented to illustrate the obtained results.

Abstract:Global stabilization of a class of switched nonlinear systems with unknown arbitrarily switched output function is achieved via output feedback. A couple of improved high-gain observer and output feedback control law are proposed by using dual high-gain scaling technique. In the presence of non-differentiable output function, a common dynamic output feedback controller is established, where a generalized Lyapunov inequality is introduced with explicit calculation. By constructinga single Lyapunov function for all subsystems, it shows the closed-loop switched systems are globally asymptotically stable under arbitrary switching. Ultimately, two examples are given to illustrate the effectiveness of our control scheme.

Abstract:An adaptive repetitive learning control method was proposed for parametric output-feedback high-order nonlinear systems with unknown control direction under the repeatable environment. The continuous Nussbaum gain method was incorporated to tackle the difficulties associated with the unknown high-frequency gain sign. A differential-difference adaptation law which combined both the time-domain and the iteration-domain adaptations was introduced to learn the unknown parameters in the backward recursive design for the high-order nonlinear systems. The rigorous proof based on Lyapunov stability theory was presented to show that the system output could converge to the desired trajectory asymptotically along the iteration axis under the proposed control scheme. A numerical simulation demonstrates that the proposed control method can not only deal with the unknown control direction but also ensure the convergence of parametric output-feedback high-order nonlinear systems.

Abstract:We consider a global adaptive stabilization problem for feedback nonlinear systems with nonlinear parametrization. In our previous work [15], we showed that for such systems global adaptive stabilization can be achieved by switching nonlinear controllers. In this paper, we further show that global adaptive stabilization can still be achieved by switching linear controllers. From the consideration of implementation, the linear controller has obvious advantages. The design of our adaptive stabilizer takes a two-step procedure. We first design a linear stabilizer with “undetermined” gains and then design a set of switching logics to tune online the gains in a switching manner. It is shown that under our proposed control, for any initial conditions, all closed-loop states are bounded and asymptotic regulation is achieved.

Abstract:This article addresses the stabilization problem for a class of stochastic feedforward systems with unknown nonlinearities. Due to the unknown nonlinearities, a nested saturation control law is designed with a priori unknown saturation bounds. Then, a group of logic-based switching conditions are provided for tuning the saturation bounds adaptively. Global asymptotical stability in the probability of the system states is proven. The key features of the control approach lie in that both explicit bounds and specific forms of the nonlinearities could be unknown for designing and deploying the controller.

Abstract:In this article, an adaptive switching controller is designed for the stabilization control and the tracking control of nonlinear systems suffering from full state constraints, unknown control directions, and system uncertainties. Featured with changing signs and unbounded increasing magnitudes, a switching control structure is proposed to deal with the unknown control direction problem. In order to explore and finally fix the correct control direction, an adaptive switching rule, a switching function, and a reference function are constructed. An integral Lyapunov function is adopted for the design of the control law, which ensures that full state constraints will not be violated. Using this method, the nonlinear system can be properly controlled without extra estimations or approximations. The boundedness of all the states and the stability of the system are analyzed and guaranteed. Finally, simulations are conducted to validate the proposed method, and the results illustrate its effectiveness.

Abstract:In this paper, the adaptive control via switching linear controllers is studied for a class of nonlinearly parameterized systems with unknown control directions. For the studied system, the parametric uncertainties entering the state equations nonlinearly can be fast time-varying or jumping at unknown time instants and the bounds of the parametric uncertainties are not required to know a priori and the control directions can be unknown. First, sufficient conditions for designing an adaptive stabilizer are derived. Then, the adaptive stabilizer is a switching-type one, in which a linear controller with two undetermined design parameters to be tuned is recursively designed by backstepping, and a switching mechanism is proposed to tune these parameters online for compensating the unknown control directions and the unknown bounds of the parametric uncertainties. The undetermined design parameters are based on the upper bound estimate of the unknown parameters existing not only in the nonlinear functions but also in the control directions functions. The proposed adaptive controller globally asymptotically stabilizes the system in the sense that, for any initial conditions, the state converges to the origin while all the signals of the closed-loop system are bounded. Finally, an example is given to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:A universal robust control approach is proposed to stabilise a class of nonlinear systems. The system contains both nonlinear dynamics uncertainty and an unknown control direction, which is the multiplier of the control term. Being different from most previous studies, the unknown control direction is allowed to switch its sign in this article. A new Nussbaum gain technique is designed and integrated with robust controller to tackle the sign-switching unknown control direction. It is proven that the proposed control approach can yield asymptotic stabilisation and guarantee the boundedness of the closed-loop signals. In addition, these results can be readily extended to tracking problems under a different assumption.

Abstract:This paper presents a global output‐feedback control scheme for a class of nonlinear systems that are transformed via a parameter‐independent change of co‐ordinates into a form in which there exist three kinds of unknown parameters: one is the unknown virtual control coefficients, one is the unknown parameters that multiply output nonlinearities and the other kind is the unknown parameters that multiply affine functions of the derivative of the measured output with coefficients that are smooth nonlinear functions of the measured output. We use two parameter‐dependent changes of co‐ordinates to transform the system considered into parametric output‐feedback form. One transformation is used to eliminate the difficulty in dealing with unknown virtual control coefficients and the other transformation is used to remove the nonlinearities which are affine functions of the derivative of the measured output with coefficients that are smooth nonlinear functions of the measured output. Then the scheme presented by Ye ( IEEE Trans. Automat. Control 2001; 46 :112–115) can be applied to the new system. Global results can be obtained for the overall closed‐loop systems without any constraints on the nonlinear terms. Copyright © 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract:The ideas of adaptive nonlinear damping and changing supply functions were used to counteract the effects of parameter and nonlinear uncertainties, unmodeled dynamics and unknown bounded disturbances. The high-gain observer was used to estimate the state of the system. A robust adaptive output feedback control scheme was proposed for nonlinearly parameterized systems represented by input-output models. The scheme does not need to estimate the unknown parameters nor add a dynamical signal to dominate the effects of unmodeled dynamics. It is proven that the proposed control scheme guarantees that all the variables in the closed-loop system are bounded and the mean-square tracking error can be made arbitrarily small by choosing some design parameters appropriately. Simulation results have illustrated the effectiveness of the proposed robust adaptive control scheme.

Abstract:In this paper, the robust-control problem is investigated for a class of uncertain nonlinear time-delay systems via dynamic output-feedback approach. The considered system is in the strict-feedback form with unknown control direction. A full-order observer is constructed with the gains computed via linear matrix inequality at first. Then, with the bounds of uncertain functions known, we design the dynamic output-feedback controller such that the closed-loop system is asymptotically stable. Furthermore, when the bound functions of uncertainties are not available, the adaptive fuzzy-logic system is employed to approximate the uncertain function, and the corresponding output-feedback controller is designed. It is shown that the resulting closed-loop system is stable in the sense of semiglobal uniform ultimate boundedness. Finally, simulations are done to verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the obtained theoretical results.

Abstract:In this article, a class of global finite‐time stabilization problem for high‐order stochastic nonlinear systems with multiple unknown control directions is studied. In order to solve the difficulties caused by the unknown control directions and at the same time, the system is required to converge to the origin in a limited time. Therefore, a new switching mechanism based on the Lyapunov‐like function is proposed. By adding a power integral technique and utilizing sign function, a finite‐time switching controller is designed. The controller parameters need to be adjusted online according to the proposed switching logic. It is rigorously proved that the designed controller can make the system state converge probabilistically to the origin in a finite‐time. A simulation example shows the effectiveness of the proposed control algorithm.

Abstract:<p>In this article, a global output feedback stabilization scheme is proposed for a class of time-delay uncertain nonlinear systems with unknown measurement sensitivity. A new high gain observer is designed with which the sensitivity function can be tackled by only one dynamic gain and the coupled linear-like controller is fairly simple. By introducing some transformations of the state estimation errors and observer states, and appropriately choosing Lyapunov–Krasovskii functionals, it is proved that the proposed controller can globally stabilize the system.</p>

Abstract:In this paper, an output feedback control method with prescribed performance is proposed for single-input and single-output (SISO) switched non-strict-feedback nonlinear systems. It is assumed that nonlinear functions of the concerned systems are unknown, switching signals are unknown and arbitrary, and the states are unmeasured. A linear state observer is designed to estimate the unmeasured states, and an observer-based output feedback control scheme is developed. The key advantages of the proposed control strategy are that virtual control gains of the concerned non-strict-feedback nonlinear systems are not required to be known, and only one tuning parameter is needed. Based on Lyapunov stability theory, it is shown that all the signals in the resulting closed-loop system are semi-globally uniformly ultimately bounded, and the tracking error converges to a small residual set with the prescribed performance bound. The effectiveness of the proposed control approach is verified by a numerical example.
