Abstract:In an effort to contain the spread of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), China has been applying chlorine disinfectants to both indoor and outdoor spaces. To minimize opportunities for the severe acute respiratory syndrome–coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2)—the virus that causes COVID-19—to thrive, China has dispensed more than 5000 tons of disinfectants in Wuhan City alone (<a class="xref-bibr" href="#ref-1">1</a>). These chemicals can get into sewage systems and pollute drinking water resources (<a class="xref-bibr" href="#ref-1">1</a>). Both the direct runoff and indirect sewage effluents will eventually end up in lakes and rivers, putting aquatic ecosystems at risk (<a class="xref-bibr" href="#ref-2">2</a>).

Abstract:Abstract Abstract To fight against the coronavirus infectious disease-2019 (COVID-19), chlorine-based disinfectants are extensively or even over used for water, surface and personal care decontamination. The risks of disinfection by-products (DBPs) have been alerted to cause serious secondary pollution; however, there is still lack of evidence. This study collected 110 water samples from nine lakes and two rivers in Wuhan during the COVID-19 pandemic and comprehensively analyzed the occurrence of eighteen DBPs. Trihalomethanes, halonitromethanes, halogen acetonitriles and nitrosamines had a high detection frequency and were 0.99-14.26, ND-4.62, ND-1.09 and 0.0414-0.0861 μg/L, respectively, all lower than the maximum contamination level (MCL) suggested by China and USA. Haloacetic acids were detected in all lakes and Yangtze River and ranged from 33.8 to 856.1 μg/L, much higher than the MCL. Haloacetic acids and halogen acetonitriles accounted for 74.2-95.1% of the total cytotoxicity (0.38-3.62×105); halonitromethanes (94.0-98.7%) contributed to the majority of genotoxicity (0.52-5.17×104). Dichloroacetic acid exhibited significant ecological risks to green algae in two lakes and Yangtze River (risk quotient >10), and all the other DBPs showed negligible risks (risk quotient <0.01) to fish, daphnid or green algae. Correlation and redundancy analysis identified strong correlations between total organic carbon, conductivity, NH3-N, turbidity and DBPs. DBP composition and the fluorescence indices of dissolved organic matters together categorized all lakes into two types. Type-I lakes contained all DBP categories, driven by total organic carbon and secondarily formed by residual active chlorine with natural organic matters; Type-II lakes and Yangtze River only had high levels of haloacetic acids and small amounts of trihalomethanes, explained by the primary formation of DBPs in sewage. Our findings for the first time uncovered the significant accumulation and risks of DBPs in lakes and rivers of Wuhan during the COVID-19, provided the evidence of secondary pollution from intensive disinfection activities with chlorine-based disinfectants, evaluated the potential the ecological risks of DBPs in Wuhan and along Yangtze River, and raised our re-consideration of disinfection strategy in the pandemics and post-COVID-19 era.

Abstract:Increased disinfection of wastewater to preserve its microbiological quality during the coronavirus infectious disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic have inevitably led to increased production of toxic disinfection by-products (DBPs). However, there is limited information on such DBPs (i.e., trihalomethanes, haloacetic acids, nitrosamines, and haloacetonitriles). This review focused on the upsurge of chlorine-based disinfectants (such as chlorine, chloramine and chlorine dioxide) in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in the global response to COVID-19. The formation and distribution of DBPs in wastewater were then analyzed to understand the impacts of these large-scale usage of disinfectants in WWTPs. In addition, potential ecological risks associated with DBPs derived from wastewater disinfection and its receiving water bodies were summarized. Finally, various approaches for mitigating DBP levels in wastewater and suggestions for further research into the environmental risks of increased wastewater disinfection were provided. Overall, this study presented a comprehensive overview of the formation, distribution, potential ecological risks, and mitigating approaches of DBPs derived from wastewater disinfection that will facilitate appropriate wastewater disinfection techniques selection, potential ecological risk assessment, and removal approaches and regulations consideration.
Spatiotemporal Variation of Microeukaryotic Biodiversity and Biotic Condition Associated with Disinfectants after the COVID-19 Lockdown in Wuhan, China

Abstract:Intensive application of chlorine-based disinfectants driven by the COVID-19 pandemic was suspected to be detrimental to receiving water ecosystems, but with little field evidence. We characterized the occurrences of typical disinfectants and microeukaryotic communities in surface waters associated with three wastewater treatment plants (WWTP)-river systems one year after the lockdown in Wuhan, China. Trihalomethanes (THMs) declined from summer 2020 (0.01 ∼ 1.82 μg/L) to summer 2021 (0.01 ∼ 0.95 μg/L), whereas quaternary ammonium salts (QAs) increased from summer 2020 (0.53 ∼ 6.35 ng/L) to summer 2021 (8.49 ∼ 191 ng/L). Biodiversity monitoring with environmental DNA (eDNA) revealed significant temporal variation in microeukaryotic community composition. The monitored disinfectants were correlated with some eukaryotic communities as demonstrated by redundancy analysis. For example, QAs were positively related to Cryptophyta relative abundance, but negatively related to Rotifera relative abundance. A microeukaryote-based multimetric index indicated ecological impairment near the Han River WWTP outlet in 2020. Our findings indicate the influence of heavily used disinfectants on river microeukaryotic communities, and the usefulness of assessing mid-term ecological risks from disinfectants in the post COVID-19 era.
Occurrence and Distribution of Disinfection Byproducts in Domestic Wastewater Effluent, Tap Water, and Surface Water during the SARS-CoV-2 Pandemic in China

Abstract:Intensified efforts to curb transmission of the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus-2 might lead to an elevated concentration of disinfectants in domestic wastewater and drinking water in China, possibly resulting in the generation of numerous toxic disinfection byproducts (DBPs). In this study, the occurrence and distribution of five categories of DBPs, including six trihalomethanes (THMs), nine haloacetic acids (HAAs), two haloketones, nine nitrosamines, and nine aromatic halogenated DBPs, in domestic wastewater effluent, tap water, and surface water were investigated. The results showed that the total concentration level of measured DBPs in wastewater effluents (78.3 μg/L) was higher than that in tap water (56.0 μg/L, p = 0.05), followed by surface water (8.0 μg/L, p < 0.01). Moreover, HAAs and THMs were the two most dominant categories of DBPs in wastewater effluents, tap water, and surface water, accounting for >90%, respectively. Out of the regulated DBPs, none of the wastewater effluents and tap water samples exceeded the corresponding maximum guideline values of chloroform (300 μg/L), THM4 (80 μg/L), NDMA (100 ng/L), and only 2 of 35 tap water samples (67.6 and 63.3 μg/L) exceeded the HAA5 (60 μg/L) safe limit. HAAs in wastewater effluents showed higher values of risk quotient for green algae. Abstract:The outbreak of COVID-19 has led to the large-scale usage of chlorinated disinfectants in cities. Disinfectants and disinfection by-products (DBPs) enter rivers through urban drainage and surface runoff. We investigated the variations in residual chlorine, DBPs, and different aquatic organisms in the Hanjiang, Fuhe, and Qinglinghe Rivers in Wuhan during the COVID-19 pandemic. The sampling sites were from the wastewater treatment plant outlets to the downstream drinking water treatment plant intakes. Total residual chlorine and DBPs (dichloromethane and trichloromethane) detected in the river water ranged from 0 to 0.84 mg/L and 0 to 0.034 mg/L, respectively. The residual chlorine and DBPs showed a gradual reduction pattern related to water flow, and the concentration at intakes did not exceed the Chinese drinking water source quality standards. Phytoplankton and zooplankton densities were not significantly correlated with residual chlorine and DBPs. The fluctuations in phytoplankton resource use efficiency (RUE) and zooplankton RUE in the Fuhe River, with the highest residual chlorine, and the Qinglinghe River with the highest DBPs, were higher than those in the Hanjiang River. For benthic macroinvertebrates, the number of functional feeding groups in the Hanjiang River was higher than that in the Fuhe and Qinglinghe Rivers. The water and sediment bacterial communities in the Hanjiang River differed significantly from those in the Fuhe and Qingling Rivers. The denitrification function involved in N metabolism was stronger in the Fuhe and Qinglinghe Rivers. Structural equation modelling revealed that residual chlorine and DBPs impacted the diversity of benthos through direct and indirect effects on plankton. Although large-scale chlorine-containing disinfectants use occurred during the investigation, it did not harm the density of the detected aquatic organisms in water sources. With the regular use of chlorinated disinfectants for indoor and outdoor environments in response to the SARS-CoV-2 globally, it is still necessary to study the long-term and accumulated responses of water ecosystems exposed to chlorine-containing disinfectants.
Ecotoxicological effect of disinfected wastewater effluent: a short review of in vivo toxicity bioassays to aquatic organisms

Abstract:Wastewater disinfection has attracted attention with regard to fecal-oral transmission during the current coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak in China. Disinfection reduces the risk posed by waterborne pathogens; however, it threatens ecological safety. Comprising residual disinfectants, disinfection byproducts (DBPs), and other contaminants, disinfected wastewater effluents have a negative impact on aquatic organisms as well as on the balance of the aquatic ecosystem of the recipient water body. Here, we reviewed the in vivo toxicity bioassays of disinfected wastewater effluents on the aquatic organisms at different trophic levels, including freshwater organisms and marine organisms. Associated variables, i.e., total suspended solids (TSSs), ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N), residual disinfectants, and features of the effluent (water temperature and sampling season), can significantly influence the results of these in vivo toxicity bioassays. Each typical test organism has its own pros and cons, where the species type, life stages, and test endpoints have crucial influences on the bioassays; therefore, they should be taken into account before and during the studies on ecotoxicological effects. More efforts should be expended toward conducting more practical bioassays involving the scenarios of the recipient water body in order to better simulate real ecotoxicological effects of disinfected wastewater effluents; extended exposure time should be considered to gain additional insights into the long-term or pass-generation ecotoxicological effects, approaching true levels in the recipient water body.

Abstract:The issue of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), has created enormous threat to global health. In an effort to contain the spread of COVID-19, a huge amount of disinfectants and antibiotics have been utilized on public health. Accordingly, the concentration of disinfectants and antibiotics is increasing rapidly in various environments, including wastewater, surface waters, soils and sediments. The aims of this study were to analyze the potential ecological environment impacts of disinfectants and antibiotics by summarizing their utilization, environmental occurrence, distribution and toxicity. The paper highlights the promoting effects of disinfectants and antibiotics on antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and even antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB). The scientific evidences indicate that the high concentration and high dose of disinfectants and antibiotics promote the evolution toward antimicrobial resistance through horizontal gene transformation and vertical gene transformation, which threaten human health. Further concerns should be focused more on the enrichment, bioaccumulation and biomagnification of disinfectants, antibiotics, antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and even antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) in human bodies.
Pilot Study of Pollution Characteristics and Ecological Risk of Disinfection Byproducts in Natural Waters in Hong Kong

Abstract:Increased disinfection efforts in various parts of China, including Hong Kong, to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus may lead to elevated concentrations of disinfectants in domestic sewage and surface runoff in Hong Kong, generating large quantities of toxic disinfection byproducts. Our study investigated the presence and distribution of four trihalomethanes (THMs), six haloacetic acids (HAAs), and eight nitrosamines (NAMs) in rivers and seawater in Hong Kong. The concentrations of THMs (mean concentration: 1.6 µg/L [seawater], 3.0 µg/L [river water]), HAAs (mean concentration: 1.4 µg/L [seawater], 1.9 µg/L [river water]), and NAMs (mean concentration: 4.4 ng/L [seawater], 5.6 ng/L [river water]) did not significantly differ between river water and seawater. The total disinfection byproduct content in river water in Hong Kong was similar to that in Wuhan and Beijing (People's Republic of China), and the total THM concentration in seawater was significantly higher than that before the COVID-19 pandemic. Among the regulated disinfection byproducts, none of the surface water samples exceeded the maximum index values for THM4 (80 μg/L), HAA5 (60 μg/L), and nitrosodimethylamine (100 ng/L) in drinking water. Among the disinfection byproducts detected, bromoform in rivers and seawater poses the highest risk to aquatic organisms, which warrants attention and mitigation efforts. Comparisons in Concentrations of Chlorine Compounds in Urban Section of Nanfeihe River before and after COVID-19 Epidemic

Abstract:The spread of COVID-19 epidemic in early 2020 has led to the widespread use of medical disinfectants, which will inevitably impact the ecological balance of natural water environment. Based on the data collection, field investigation and sampling and analysis, the main disinfectant types, toxicity and their distribution characteristics in Nanfeihe River, an urban river in Hefei City, Anhui Province were analyzed and studied, with the emphasis on the impact on water environment and aquatic ecosystem. The results showed that the most widely used disinfectant is chlorine containing disinfectant in the COVID-19 epidemic, and the total amount of the disinfectants and its by-products as calculated by total chlorine in the urban section of the River is 5.52-48.7g/L, which is significantly higher than the measured value during non COVID-19 epidemic period. It shows that the use of chlorine containing disinfectants during the epidemic has caused residues in urban water. In addition, the sampling points near the effluent of sewage treatment plant and rainwater discharge had significantly higher chlorine compounds, as compared with other points, indicating the ways of the disinfectant and its by-products entering water environment mainly including effluent discharge from sewage treatment plants and non-point source pollution caused by urban surface rainwater runoff. In order to reduce or eliminate the adverse effects of use of disinfectants on the urban water environment and aquatic ecological health, source control, process reduction, and terminal treatment, as well as supervision of the whole process of plant-network-river integration should be considered in future work.

Abstract:In this study, concentrations of disinfection byproducts (DBPs) and COVID-19 related pharmaceuticals in wastewater effluents and surface water were measured two weeks, three months and eight months after the lockdown in Wuhan. Little temporal variation in DBP concentrations suggested intensified disinfection during the COVID-19 pandemic had limited impacts on the occurrence of DBPs in the aquatic environment. In contrast, the pandemic led to a significant increase in concentrations of lopinavir and ritonavir in wastewater effluents and surface water. The high detection frequency of these pharmaceuticals in surface water after the lockdown highlighted their mobility and persistence in the aquatic environment. The initial ecological risk assessment indicated moderate risks associated with these pharmaceuticals in surface water. As the global situation is still rapidly evolving with a continuous surge in the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases, our results suggest a pressing need for monitoring COVID-19 related pharmaceuticals as well as a systematic evaluation of their ecotoxicities in the aquatic environment.

Abstract:The coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic has posed severe threats to humans and the geoenvironment. The findings of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (Sars-CoV-2) traces in waste water and the practice of disinfecting outdoor spaces in several cities in the world, which can result into the entry of disinfectants and their by-products into storm drainage systems and their subsequent discharge into rivers and coastal waters, raise the issue of environmental, ecological and public health effects. The aims of the current paper are to investigate the potential of water and waste water to operate as transmission routes for Sars-CoV-2 and the risks of this to public health and the geoenvironment. Additionally, several developing countries are characterised by low water-related disaster resilience and low household water security, with measures for protection of water resources and technologies for clean water and sanitation being substandard or not in place. To mitigate the impact of the pandemic in such cases, practical recommendations are provided herein. The paper calls for the enhancement of research into the migration mechanisms of viruses in various media, as well as in the formation of trihalomethanes and other disinfectant by-products in the geoenvironment, in order to develop robust solutions to combat the effects of the current and future pandemics.

Abstract:Since the onset of the COVID-19 Pandemic, large amounts of chlorine-containing disinfectants have been used to interrupt the spread of SARS-CoV-2 and residual chlorine eventually entered the hospital or municipal sewage treatment facilities. However, little is known about the effect of chlorine influx on the biological sewage treatment process. Here we investigated the effect of chlorine on the microbiome and the mechanism of microbial chlorine resistance in the activated sludge of the aerobic treatment process, using metagenomic and metatranscriptomic sequencing. We found that chlorine could negatively impact the aerobic treatment performance regarding nitrogen/COD removal with a dose-dependent effect, and the dual effects of chlorine dose and interaction time differentiated the microbial community in activated sludge. The decline of nitrogen/COD removal was attributed to the compressed activity of functional microorganisms, such as the ammonia oxidation bacteria, under chlorinated conditions, and the damage cannot be recovered in a short term. In addition, some microorganisms could survive in chlorinated conditions by up-regulating the chlorine resistance genes (CRGs) expression (approximately 1.5 times) and stimulating new CRGs expression. In particular, species Acinetobacter johnsonii could resist high concentrations of chlorine through various mechanisms, especially the overexpression of efflux pump function encoded by qac genes play a key role. Based on these results, considering the persistence of the epidemic and extensive use of chlorine disinfectants, it cannot be ignored that large amounts of residual chlorine are entering the biological treatment facility, and strictly de-chlorination measures or microbial chlorine resistance regulations before entering should be implemented.

Abstract:Disinfection is essential for the control of waterborne pathogens (WPs), especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. WP can enter the viable but non-culturable (VBNC) state to evade disinfection, seriously threatening water safety. VBNC WPs should be considered as an emerging contaminant to ensure a higher level of safety of the water environment. Here, this study systematically reviewed the water disinfection methods that could induce WPs into the VBNC state, and clarified the risks of different species of VBNC WPs in the relevant water environment. The physicochemical and physiological properties of VBNC cells (e.g., morphology, physiology, and resuscitation potential) were then evaluated to better understand their potential health risks. In addition, the dominant detection methods of VBNC WPs were discussed, and real-time and label-free technologies were recommended for the study of VBNC WPs in the aquatic environment. The possible mechanisms of formation and persistence at the genetic level were highlighted. It concluded that the VBNC state has a deeper level of dormancy than the persistent state, which is associated with the general stress response and stringent response systems, and its persistence is also associated with the active efflux of harmful substances. Finally, the current shortcomings and research perspectives of VBNC bacteria were summarized. This review provides new insights into the characteristics, detection methods, persistence mechanisms, and potential health risks of VBNC WPs induced by water disinfection processes, and also serves as a basis for microbial risk control in the aquatic environment.

Abstract:The epidemic of COVID-19 has aroused people's particular attention to biosafety. A growing number of disinfection products have been consumed during this period. However, the flaw of disinfection has not received enough attention, especially in water treatment processes. While cutting down the quantity of microorganisms, disinfection processes exert a considerable selection effect on bacteria and thus reshape the microbial community structure to a great extent, causing the problem of disinfection-residual-bacteria (DRB). These systematic and profound changes could lead to the shift in regrowth potential, bio fouling potential, as well as antibiotic resistance level and might cause a series of potential risks. In this review, we collected and summarized the data from the literature in recent 10 years about the microbial community structure shifting of natural water or wastewater in full-scale treatment plants caused by disinfection. Based on these data, typical DRB with the most reporting frequency after disinfection by chlorine-containing disinfectants, ozone disinfection, and ultraviolet disinfection were identified and summarized, which were the bacteria with a relative abundance of over 5% in the residual bacteria community and the bacteria with an increasing rate of relative abundance over 100% after disinfection. Furthermore, the phylogenic relationship and potential risks of these typical DRB were also analyzed. Twelve out of fifteen typical DRB genera contain pathogenic strains, and many were reported of great secretion ability. Pseudomonas and Acinetobacter possess multiple disinfection resistance and could be considered as model bacteria in future studies of disinfection. We also discussed the growth, secretion, and antibiotic resistance characteristics of DRB, as well as possible control strategies. The DRB phenomenon is not limited to water treatment but also exists in the air and solid disinfection processes, which need more attention and more profound research, especially in the period of COVID-19.

Abstract:Reusing treated wastewater can effectively alleviate water shortages and water contamination problems but depends on ensuring the safety of the reclaimed water that is produced. The operating and management conditions for water reclamation plants in China have been changed since the outbreak of the COVID-19 epidemic in China at the end of 2019 to prevent emerging viruses being spread through wastewater treatment processes and the reclaimed water that is produced. Removal of pathogens and trace organic compounds (e.g., pharmaceuticals and personal care products and endocrine disrupting chemicals) in a real water reclamation plant after the start of COVID-19 epidemic was studied. Disinfection byproduct formation caused by chlorine being added to meet disinfection requirements was also assessed. The pathogenic microorganism concentrations in effluent were <2 (most probable number)/L, and the removal rates for most trace organic compounds were >80% when advanced treatments were performed using ozone, ultraviolet light, and chlorine doses of 2 mg/L, 20.5 mJ/cm2, and 2–3 mg/L, respectively. The main disinfection byproduct produced at a chlorine dose of 2 mg/L and a residence time of 1 h was chloroform (at concentrations <15 μg/L). The results indicated that the water reclamation processes with modified conditions gave high pathogen and trace organic compound removal rates and reasonably well-controlled disinfection byproduct concentrations.

Abstract:Quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) are active ingredients in over 200 disinfectants currently recommended by the U.S. EPA for use to inactivate the SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) virus. The amounts of these compounds used in household, workplace, and industry settings has very likely increased, and usage will continue to be elevated given the scope of the pandemic. QACs have been previously detected in wastewater, surface waters, and sediments, and effects on antibiotic resistance have been explored. Thus, it is important to assess potential environmental and engineering impacts of elevated QAC usage, which may include disruption of wastewater treatment unit operations, proliferation of antibiotic resistance, formation of nitrosamine disinfection byproducts, and impacts on biota in surface waters. The threat caused by COVID-19 is clear, and a reasonable response is elevated use of QACs to mitigate spread of infection. Exploration of potential effects, environmental fate, and technologies to minimize environmental releases of QACs, however, is warranted.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Water reclamation and ecological reuse is gradually becoming a popular solution to address the high pollutant loads and insufficient ecological flow of many urban rivers. However, emerging contaminants in water reuse system and associated human health and ecological risks need to be assessed. This study determined the occurrence and human health and ecological risk assessments of 35 emerging contaminants during one year, including 5 types of persistent organic pollutants (POPs), 5 pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs), 7 endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) and 18 disinfection by-products (DBPs), in a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) and receiving rivers, as well as an unimpacted river for comparison. Results showed that most of PPCPs and EDCs, especially antibiotics, tridosan, estrogens and bisphenol A, occurred frequently at relatively high concentrations, and they were removed from 205% to 88.7% with a mean of 58.9% via WWTP. The highest potential noncarcinogenic and carcinogenic risks in different reuse scenarios were assessed using maximal detected concentrations, all below the acceptable risk limits, with the highest total combined risk value of 9.21 x 10(-9) and 9.98 x 10(-7), respectively. Ecological risk assessment was conducted using risk quotient (RQ) method and indicated that several PPCPs, EDCs and haloacetonitriles (HANs) pose high risk (RQ > 1) to aquatic ecology in the rivers, with the highest RQ up to 83.8. The study suggested that ecological risks need to be urgently addressed by updating and optimizing the process in WWTPs to strengthen the removal efficiencies of emerging contaminants. The study can serve as a reference for safer water reuse in the future, while further studies could be conducted on the health risk of specific groups of people, exposure parameters in water reuse, as well as more emerging contaminants. Abstract:During the epidemic of Coronavirus Disease 2019（COVID-19）, physical and chemical disinfections are commonly used. The chemical disinfectants include chlorine-contained and peroxide-based disinfectants, which are widely used because of their high efficiency and easy operation. However, excessive application of disinfectants can lead to disinfectant residues and disinfection by-products（DBPs）, which would induce ecological and health hazards. Therefore, it is necessary to standardize the air disinfection, and to further study the health and ecological safety risks of disinfectants in a variety of environmental matrices. This paper summarizes the airborne microorganisms, relevant standards of airborne microorganisms, common air disinfection methods and their inactivation effects,the ecological and health hazards of residual disinfectants and DBPs,and also prospects the future development trends of air disinfection.
