Abstract:Direct numerical simulation of spanwise-rotation-driven flow transitions in viscoelastic plane Couette flow from a drag-reduced inertial to a drag-enhanced elasto-inertial turbulent flow state followed by full relaminarization is reported for the first time. Specifically, this novel flow transition begins with a drag-reduced inertial turbulent flow state at a low rotation number $0\leqslant Ro \leqslant 0.1$ , and then transitions to a rotation/polymer-additive-driven drag-enhanced inertial turbulent regime, $0.1\leqslant Ro \leqslant 0.3$ . In turn, the flow transitions to a drag-enhanced elasto-inertial turbulent state, $0.3\leqslant Ro \leqslant 0.9$ , and eventually relaminarizes at $Ro=1$ . In addition, two novel rotation-dependent drag enhancement mechanisms are proposed and substantiated. (1) The formation of large-scale roll cells results in enhanced convective momentum transport along with significant polymer elongation and stress generated in the extensionally dominated flow between adjacent roll cells at $Ro\leqslant 0.2$ . (2) Coriolis-force-generated turbulent vortices cause strong incoherent transport and homogenization of significant polymer stress in the bulk via their vortical circulations at $Ro=0.5 - 0.9$ .

Abstract:The analogy between rotating shear flow and thermal convection suggests the existence of plumes, inertial waves and plume currents in plane Poiseuille flow under spanwise rotation. The existence of these flow structures is examined with the results of three-dimensional and two-dimensional three-component direct numerical simulations. The dynamics of plumes near the unstable side is embodied in a truncated exponential distribution of turbulent fluctuations. For large rotation numbers, inertial waves are identified near the stable side, and these can be used to explain the abnormal flow statistics, such as the large root-mean-square of the streamwise velocity fluctuation and the nearly negligible Reynolds shear stress. For small or medium rotation numbers, plumes generated from the unstable side form large-scale plume currents and the patterns of the plume currents show different capabilities in scalar transport.
Numerical Investigation of Plane Couette Flow with Weak Spanwise Rotation

Abstract:Direct numerical simulation of rotating plane Couette flow (RPCF) at Rew = 1300 and Ro = 0.02 was performed with different mesh resolutions and different sizes of computation domain. Our results showed that a grid resolution in wall units with Δx+ = 8.51, Δz+ = 4.26, Δy+|min = 0.0873 and Δy+|max = 3.89 is fine enough to simulate the problem at the present parameters. The streamwise length Lx and spanwise length Lz of the computational box have different impacts on the flow statistics, where the statistics were converged if Lx is longer than 8πh, while no converged results were obtained for different Lz. More importantly, our results with very long simulation time showed that a state transition would happen if Lx ≥ 8πh, from a state with four pairs of roll cells to a state with three pairs of roll cells with Lz = 6πh. Each state could survive for more than 1500h/Uw, and the flow statistics were different.

Abstract:A series of direct numerical simulations of spanwise-rotating turbulent plane Couette flows at a Reynolds number of 1300 with rotation numbers Ro between 0 and 0.9 is carried out to investigate the effects of anticyclonic rotation on turbulent statistics and flow structures. Several typical turbulent statistics are presented, including the mean shear rate at the centerline, the wall-friction Reynolds number, and volume-averaged kinetic energies with respect to the secondary flowfield, turbulent field, and total fluctuation field. Our results show that the rotation changes these quantities in different manners. Volume-averaged balance equations for kinetic energy are analyzed and it turns out that the interaction term acts as a kinetic energy bridge that transfers energy from the secondary flow to the turbulent fluctuations. Several typical flow regimes are identified based on the correlation functions across the whole channel and flow visualizations. The two-dimensional roll cells are observed at weak rotation Ro = 0.01, where alternant clustering of vortices appears. Three-dimensional roll cells emerge around Ro approximate to 0.02, where the clustering of vortices shows the meandering and bifurcating behavior. For moderate rotation 0.07 less than or similar to Ro less than or similar to 0.36, well-organized structures are observed, where the herringbonelike vortices are clustered between streaks from the top view of three-dimensional flow visualization and form annuluses. More importantly, the vortices are rather confined to one side of the walls when Ro <= 0.02 and are inclined from the bottom to upper walls when Ro >= 0.07.
A Two-Dimensional-three-component Model for Spanwise Rotating Plane Poiseuille Flow

Abstract:Spanwise rotating plane Poiseuille flow (RPPF) is one of the canonical flow problems to study the effect of system rotation on wall-bounded shear flows and has been studied a lot in the past. In the present work, a two-dimensional-three-component (2D/3C) model for RPPF is introduced and it is shown that the present model is equivalent to a thermal convection problem with unit Prandtl number. For low Reynolds number cases, the model can be used to study the stability behaviour of the roll cells. It is found that the neutral stability curves, critical eigensolutions and critical streamfunctions of RPPF at different rotation numbers (Ro) almost collapse with the help of a rescaling with a newly defined Rayleigh number Ra and channel height H. Analytic expressions for the critical Reynolds number and critical wavenumber at different Ro can be obtained. For a turbulent state with high Reynolds number, the 2D/3C model for RPPF is self-sustained even without extra excitations. Simulation results also show that the profiles of mean streamwise velocity and Reynolds shear stress from the 2D/3C model share the same linear laws as the fully three-dimensional cases, although differences on the intercepts can be observed. The contours of streamwise velocity fluctuations behave like plumes in the linear law region. We also provide an explanation to the linear mean velocity profiles observed at high rotation numbers.

Abstract:The hysteresis behavior of spanwise rotating plane Couette flow is investigated by direct numerical simulations, where the simulations are carried out at a computational box 8 pi h x 2h x 4 pi h (here h is the half-channel height) along two opposite directions in rotation number (Ro = 2 Omega h/U-w, with Omega the constant angular velocity in the spanwise direction and U-w half of the wall velocity difference) space. When rotation speed increases, structures with two pairs of roll cells appear in 0.02 <= Ro <= 0.3. However, structures with three pairs of roll cells are observed for 0.03 <= Ro <= 0.3 when Ro decreases from 0.5. Turbulent statistics on the two branches, such as the friction Reynolds number, turbulent kinetic energy, and kinetic energy from the secondary flows, exhibit similar hysteresis behaviors during 0.03 <= Ro <= 0.3. Intuitive discussions are also made to explain the hysteresis behavior.

Abstract:In the past, dual states were reported in turbulent plane Couette flow with spanwise rotation at Re-w = 1300 and Ro = 0.2 based on direct numerical simulations at a computational box 10 pi h x 2h x 4 pi h, where the flow would evolve to a state with three or two pairs of roll cells if the simulation started with the initial flow field u(i)(3p) or u(i)(2p). In the present work, the influence of an initial flow field on the dual states is investigated. Nine new simulations with an initial flow field constructed by u(i) = au(i)(2p) + (1 - alpha)u(i)(3p) (alpha = 0.1, 0.2, . . . , 0.9) are carried out, and it turns out that the flow will evolve to a state with three pairs of roll cells if alpha <= 0.6, while the flow will have only two pairs of roll cells when alpha >= 0.7, which documents the robustness of two states. The turbulent statistics is also revisited, and it is found that the turbulent kinetic energy and related dissipation are larger in the state with more roll cells. The terms in the transport equations of the Reynolds stresses are generally of the same shape at two different states, but the state with more roll cells has a larger value. The energy transfer between the secondary and the residual fields shows that the secondary flows are more energetic at the state with more roll cells while the residual field is more energetic in the other state. Furthermore, a local inverse energy cascade is observed in the near wall region at the latter state with fewer roll cells where the energy is transferred from the residual field to the secondary flow field. Our results support the conjecture that the large-scale secondary flows play a very important role in the dual states of spanwise rotating plane Couette flows.

Abstract:Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was used to investigate the film flow on rotating wheel for a horizontal twin-shaft reactor. The Volume of Fluid (VOF) model combined with the sliding mesh method was chosen to simulate the film formation process. The mechanism on a rotating wheel distinguishes itself from that on a regular solid disk. Bounded film with only one gas-liquid interface and unbounded film with two gas-liquid interfaces coexist due to the presence of an open window under certain operation conditions. The unbounded film inside open window is significantly thinner and returns more rapidly to the liquid pool. The minimum rotating speed for unbounded film formation decreases when the liquid viscosity increases. The open window on the rotating wheel can enhance the film flow and surface renewal, due to the interaction and transition between the unbounded film inside the open window zone and the bounded film on the ring and spoke zones, but this intensification is limited for highly viscous polymers. Abstract:Drag reduction (DR) in plane Couette flow (PCF) induced by the addition of flexible polymers has been studied via direct numerical simulation (DNS). The similarities and differences in the drag reduction features of PCF and plane Poiseuille flow (PPF) have been examined in detail, particularly in regard to the polymer-induced modification of large-scale structures (LSSs) in the near-wall turbulence. Specifically, it has been demonstrated that in the near-wall region, drag-reduced PCF has features similar to those of drag-reduced PPF; however, in the core region, intriguing differences are found between these two drag-reduced shear flows. Chief among these differences is the significant polymer stretch that arises from the enhanced exchanges between elastic potential energy and turbulent kinetic energy and the commensurate observation of peak values of the conformation tensor components $\unicode[STIX]{x1D60A}_{yy}$ and $\unicode[STIX]{x1D60A}_{zz}$ in this region. This finding is in stark contrast to that of drag-reduced PPF where the polymer stretch and the exchanges between elastic potential energy and turbulent kinetic energy in the core region are insignificant; to this end, in drag-reduced PPF, peak values of the conformation tensor components appear in the near-wall region. Therefore, this study paves the way for understanding the underlying flow physics in drag-reduced PCF, particularly in the context of elastic theory. Moreover, the longitudinal large-scale streaks at the channel centre of drag-reduced PCF are greatly strengthened due to the increased production/dissipation ratio; the LSS imprint effects on the near-wall flow of drag-reduced PCF monotonically increase as the Weissenberg number is enhanced.

Threading Behavior and Dynamics of Ring-Linear Polymer Blends under Poiseuille Flow

Abstract:We investigate the ring-linear polymer blends under Poiseuille flow across a range of flow intensities. As rings are flexible (K- br = 0), the threading probability gradually increases with an increase in flow field strength. However, as rings are semiflexible (K- br > 0), the threading probability significantly decreases and then significantly increases as the flow field strength increases. Additionally, for different ring rigidity parameters, the critical flow field strength corresponding to the rapid increase in the threading probability is almost the same. When the flow field strength exceeds this critical value, ring-linear polymer blends will aggregate into a cluster due to the combination of entanglement between polymers and the large differences in the velocities of the polymers. The cluster moves along the direction of the flow field and can be bisected by the flow channel's centerplane into two parts, and each part performs the tank-treading motion in opposite directions: one moving counterclockwise and the other moving clockwise. The dynamic movement of the cluster significantly promotes an increase in threading probability. Furthermore, the nonlinear relationship between the characteristic time of tank-treading motion and flow field strength suggests that the structure of the cluster exhibits similar dynamic and structural behaviors over a certain range of flow field strengths. The results could enhance our understanding of the intricate threading properties observed in ring-linear polymer blends upon exposure to external force fields.
Interface-resolved Numerical Simulations of Particle-Laden Turbulent Channel Flows with Spanwise Rotation

Abstract:Interface-resolved simulations of particle-laden turbulent channel flows with spanwise rotation at a Reynolds number of 180 and different rotation numbers ranging from 0.1 to 1.0 are performed with a fictitious domain method. The difficulty of the centrifugal force on the particles not satisfying the periodic boundary condition is circumvented by the feature of the fictitious domain formulation for the neutrally buoyant case, where the centrifugal force in the particle motion equation vanishes, and by only considering a low rotation number of 0.1 and setting the rotation center to be far away from the channel for the non-unity density ratio case. Our results show that the heavy particles (i.e., the particle density being larger than the fluid density) migrate towards the pressure wall, whereas the light particles migrate towards the suction wall. For the density ratio being unity, the particle concentration is higher near the pressure wall than near the suction wall, and we attribute the reason to the effects of the mean secondary flow structure (i.e., the Taylor–Görtler vortices), since similar particle concentration distribution and secondary flow structure are observed in a rotating laminar channel flow. The mean velocities of heavy particles are smaller in the pressure-side half channel except the near-wall region, and larger in the suction-side half channel, compared to the fluid mean velocity; the opposite occurs for the light particle case. The addition of the finite-size particles increases the flow drag. The flow drag is not sensitive to the density ratio for the light particles and increases with increasing density ratio for the heavy particles. The effects of the particles on the fluid root-mean-square velocities of the rotating turbulent channel flow are generally similar to the non-rotating channel case, but become more complicated because of the asymmetric turbulence intensity and particle concentration distribution near two walls caused by the channel rotation.
Experimental research on drag reduction by polymer additives in a turbulent pipe flow

Abstract:In order to investigate the effects of injection position on drag reduction as well as further the effects of polymer additives on turbulent structures, LDA measurements of turbulent pipe flows were conducted. The results show that the amount of drag I eduction grows with the increase of the Reynolds number, and injecting the polymer at the centre of pipe is more effective than at the wall. Due to the addition of polymer solution, the axial, radial r.m.s. velocity fluctuations and Reynolds stress decrease over the entire pipe cross-section, the time auto-correlation coefficients of axial and radial velocity fluctuation at the centre of pipe decay more slowly, the number of spectrum peaks is decreased, and the peak shifts towards lower wave numbers. The results also reveal that, due to the addition of polymer solution, the large-scale vortices are enhanced and small-scale vortices are suppressed.
Coherent structure dynamics and identification during the multistage transitions of polymeric turbulent channel flow

Abstract:Drag reduction induced by polymer additives in wall-bounded turbulence has been studied for decades. A small dosage of polymer additives can drastically reduce the energy dissipation in turbulent flows and alter the flow structures at the same time. As the polymer-induced fluid elasticity increases, drag reduction goes through several stages of transition with drastically different flow statistics. While much attention in the area of polymer-turbulence interactions has been focused on the onset and the asymptotic stage of maximum drag reduction, the transition between the two intermediate stages – low-extent drag reduction (LDR) and high-extent drag reduction (HDR) – likely reflects a qualitative change in the underlying vortex dynamics according to our recent study [1]. In particular, we proposed that polymers start to suppress the lift-up and bursting of vortices at HDR, leading to the localization of turbulent structures. To test our hypothesis, a statistically robust conditional sampling algorithm, based on Jenong and Hussain [2]'s work, was adopted in this study. The comparison of conditional eddies between the Newtonian and the highly elastic turbulence shows that (i) the lifting "strength" of vortices is suppressed by polymers as reflected by the decreasing lifting angle of the conditional eddy and (ii) the curvature of vortices is also eliminated as the orientation of the head of the conditional eddy changes. In summary, the results of conditional sampling support our hypothesis of polymer-turbulence interactions during the LDR-HDR transition.
Global drag reduction and local flow statistics in Taylor-Couette turbulence with dilute polymer additives

Abstract:We present an experimental study on the drag reduction by polymers in Taylor-Couette turbulence at Reynolds numbers ($Re$) ranging from $4\times 10^3$ to $2.5\times 10^4$. In this $Re$ regime, the Taylor vortex is present and accounts for more than 50\% of the total angular velocity flux. Polyacrylamide polymers with two different average molecular weights are used. It is found that the drag reduction rate increases with polymer concentration and approaches the maximum drag reduction (MDR) limit. At MDR, the friction factor follows the $-0.58$ scaling, i.e., $C_f \sim Re^{-0.58}$, similar to channel/pipe flows. However, the drag reduction rate is about $20\%$ at MDR, which is much lower than that in channel/pipe flows at comparable $Re$. We also find that the Reynolds shear stress does not vanish and the slope of the mean azimuthal velocity profile in the logarithmic layer remains unchanged at MDR. These behaviours are reminiscent of the low drag reduction regime reported in channel flow (Warholic et al., Exp. Fluids, vol. 27, issue 5, 1999, p. 461-472). We reveal that the lower drag reduction rate originates from the fact that polymers strongly suppress the turbulent flow while only slightly weaken the mean Taylor vortex. We further show that polymers steady the velocity boundary layer and suppress the small-scale Görtler vortices in the near-wall region. The former effect reduces the emission rate of both intense fast and slow plumes detached from the boundary layer, resulting in less flux transport from the inner cylinder to the outer one and reduces energy input into the bulk turbulent flow. Our results suggest that in turbulent flows, where secondary flow structures are statistically persistent and dominate the global transport properties of the system, the drag reduction efficiency of polymer additives is significantly diminished.

Abstract:We report direct numerical simulation results that clearly elucidate the mechanism that leads to curvature dependence of drag enhancement (DE) in viscoelastic turbulent Taylor–Couette flow. Change in the angular momentum transport and its inherent link to transitions in vortical flow structures have been explored to depict the influence of the curvature of the flow geometry on DE. Specifically, it has been demonstrated that a transition in vortical structures with increasing radius ratio leads to weakening and elimination of the small-scale Görtler vortices and development and better organization (occupying the entire gap) of large-scale Taylor vortices as also evinced by the patterns of angular momentum current. The commensurate change in DE and its underlying mechanism are examined by contributions of convective flux and polymeric stress to the angular momentum current. The present finding paves the way for capturing highly localized elastic turbulence structures in direct numerical simulation by increasing geometry curvature in traditional turbulent curvilinear flows.

Three-dimensional characterization of Reynolds shear stress in near-wall coherent structures of polymer drag reduced turbulent boundary layers

Abstract:Experimental investigation is conducted using planar and tomographic particle image velocimetry measurements spanning the inner layer of Newtonian and drag-reduced zero-pressure gradient turbulent boundary layers. Low to moderate drag reduction is achieved by injecting two different concentrations of drag-reducing polymer solutions through an inclined slot. Instantaneously, both Newtonian and drag reduced flows show regions of high and near-zero Reynolds shear stress (RSS) which are termed as the high-RSS, and low-RSS regions, respectively. The high-RSS regions indicate the passing of near-wall coherent structures and are predominantly present within the cores of the low- and high-speed streaks, whereas the low-RSS regions mainly occupy the regions surrounding the streaks. The magnitude of RSS and size of the high-RSS regions decrease significantly with polymer injection. Canonical coherent structures within the near-wall region, including ejections and sweeps, hairpin-like vortices, meandering low-speed streaks, and precursors of streak breakdown are considered for the evaluation of polymer effect on high- and low-RSS regions. Besides the attenuation of the high-RSS regions, the quasi-streamwise vortices are found to weaken, and low-RSS regions are seen to enlarge around these vortices. The enlarged low-RSS regions are seen to be more pronounced near ejection motions as compared to those of the sweep motions, providing novel insights into the previously hypothesized polymer-vortex interaction through elastic mechanisms (Min et al. in J Fluid Mech 486:213–238, 2003; Tabor and De Gennes in EPL (Europhys Lett) 2(7):519, 1986). In addition, the high-RSS regions within the coherent structures coincide with strong extensional structures which are also found to dampen with polymer injection, indicating potential interactions of the polymer with extensional motions.Graphic abstract

Abstract:The Galerkin method is used to solve the diffusion equation of the distribution function for rigid rod-like polymers and the pseudo-spectral method is used to solve the momentum equation that includes the stress tensor determined by distribution function of polymers. The properties of the coherent structure in a two-dimensional time-developing viscoelastic mixing layer are given and the most probable orientations of the multibead rods as well as the stresses of polymers are obtained. The results indicate that adding polymers to the Newtonian fluid will result in a stronger vorticity diffusion, accompanied by weaker fundamental and subharmonic perturbations, less intense vortex roll-up of the mixing layer, lower oscillation frequency of fundamental energy, slower rotational motion of neighboring vortices and shorter life times of eddies. The results also show that the stretching of large eddies will have a great effect on the behavior of rod-like molecules, since the most probable orientations of rods seem to coincide with the local fluid stretching directions.

Abstract:In this paper, the three-dimensional roll-up of a viscoelastic mixing layer is numerically simulated with the pseudospectral method using the FENE-P model. An artificial diffusion is self-adaptively introduced into the constitutive equation to stabilize the time integration. In the three-dimensional mixing layer and within the parameter ranges studied, the effect of the polymer additives on the formation of the coherent Structures such as the ribs and the cups is found to be negligible. The polymer normal stresses develop wherever there exist extensional strains that are produced by the coherent structures and they then hinder the development of these structures. Stretching by the quadrupoles and the ribs together gives rise to an enormous enhancement of the polymer normal stress differences in the symmetrical plane between the quadrupole pair. These normal stress differences directly or indirectly weaken all large-scale structures Occurring in the flow including the quadrupoles, the cups, the ribs, the spanwise vortices which rotate in the opposite direction to that of the cups, and the thin spanwise vortical sheets. Attenuation of these large-scale structures leads to a diminution of small-scale Structures after their breakdown in the secondary roll-up process of the thin sheets. There is a tendency for the small-scale structures in the core region to merge into a large-scale one in the viscoelastic case. As a result, a flat and inclined vortex forms at the end of the Simulation which resembles the type of structure observed in an experimental mixing layer with surfactants injected. In addition, the results show that the extensional viscosity is an important quantity to determine the extent to which the coherent structures in a mixing layer are modified by polymer additives.

Abstract:We have performed direct numerical simulation of the turbulent flow of a polymer solution in a square duct, with the FENE-P model used to simulate the presence of polymers. First, a simulation at a fixed moderate Reynolds number is performed and its results compared with those of a Newtonian fluid to understand the mechanism of drag reduction and how the secondary motion, typical of the turbulent flow in non-axisymmetric ducts, is affected by polymer additives. Our study shows that the Prandtl’s secondary flow is modified by the polymers: the circulation of the streamwise main vortices increases and the location of the maximum vorticity moves towards the centre of the duct. In-plane fluctuations are reduced while the streamwise ones are enhanced in the centre of the duct and dumped in the corners due to a substantial modification of the quasi-streamwise vortices and the associated near-wall low- and high-speed streaks; these grow in size and depart from the walls, their streamwise coherence increasing. Finally, we investigated the effect of the parameters defining the viscoelastic behaviour of the flow and found that the Weissenberg number strongly influences the flow, with the cross-stream vortical structures growing in size and the in-plane velocity fluctuations reducing for increasing flow elasticity.
