Abstract:This study investigates a pyridinium-based NLO crystal 4-N, N-dimethylamino-4′-N′-methyl-stilbazolium 3,4-dimethoxysulfonate (DOST) containing the strong electron donor, which act the electron and hydrogen bond donors. A DOST signal crystal with a size of 2 × 5 × 1 mm3 has been grown in methanol solution by the slow cooling growth method. Physical property measurements indicate DOST crystal possesses a strong second harmonic generation response that is 8 times that of KH2PO4 (KDP) crystal and a bandgap of 2.90 eV, making it very promising for nonlinear optical applications. The NLO properties as dipole moment, polarizability, first order hyperpolarizability are performed using density functional theory (DFT) method. Benefiting for the near-perfect alignment of DOS cations, DOST crystal exhibits a large diagonal component of the effective hyperpolarization, about 105.21×10-30 esu. Furthermore, information about the sites of intermolecular interaction has been obtained by molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) surface and Hirshfeld Surface. In order to understand the electronic properties, the absorption wavelengths, excitation energies, oscillator strength, the frontier molecular orbitals and global reactivity descriptors are also calculated.

Abstract:Abstract In the development of new organic crystals for nonlinear optical and terahertz (THz) applications, it is very challenging to achieve the essentially required non‐centrosymmetric molecular arrangement. Moreover, the resulting crystal structure is mostly unpredictable due to highly dipolar molecular components with complex functional substituents. In this work, new organic salt crystals with top‐level macroscopic optical nonlinearity by controlling the van der Waals volume ( V vdW ), rather than by trial and error, are logically designed. When the V vdW of molecular ionic components varies, the corresponding crystal symmetry shows an observable trend: change from centrosymmetric to non‐centrosymmetric and back to centrosymmetric. All non‐centrosymmetric crystals exhibit an isomorphic P 1 crystal structure with an excellent macroscopic second‐order nonlinear optical response. Apart from the top‐level macroscopic optical nonlinearity, new organic crystals introducing highly electronegative fluorinated substituents with strong secondary bonding ability show excellent performance in efficient and broadband THz wave generation, high crystal density, high thermal stability, and good bulk crystal growth ability.

Abstract:A new organic material 4- N , N -dimethylamino-4ꞌ- N ꞌ-methylstilbazolium 2,4-dinitrobenzenesulfonate (DSDNS) is synthesized via Knoevenagel condensation reaction followed by metathesization reaction and DSDNS single crystals are successfully grown from the methanol–acetonitrile medium by low-temperature slow evaporation solution technique (SEST). The FT-IR and FT-Raman spectra disclose the vibrational characteristics of various functional groups present in the DSDNS material. NMR analysis ( 1 H and 13 C) reveals that nuclei of respective signals from hydrogen and carbon confirm the molecular structure. The molecular structure of the DSDNS crystal was solved by single crystal X-ray diffraction (SXRD) techniques which confirms that the DSDNS crystal crystallizes in a monoclinic crystal system with the space group C2/c. UV-DRS spectrum displays 90% optical transmittance with the cut-off wavelength λ max 520 nm and bandgap of 2.39 eV. The luminescence and chromaticity diagram reveals that the DSDNS could be a possible candidate for white light application. The positive photoconductivity nature of DSDNS crystal was confirmed from the calculation of photo and dark current values. The thermal studies reveal its stability up to 273 °C and its high tolerance capacity of 19.4 GW/cm 2 against 1064 nm from laser damage threshold studies. The third-order properties of NLO from the Z -scan method signify its promising feature towards application in the design of nonlinear optical devices and optical limiting applications.

Abstract:A photo-cross-linked side-chain second-order nonlinear optical polymer was synthesized with bis-phenol-A as the polymer backbone. The characterization of the polymer was done by nuclear magnetic resonance, infrared spectra, ultraviolet spectra and dynamic mechanical analysis methods. The electro-optic film was obtained by spin-coating and corona poling then photo-cross-linked. The film showed high glass transition temperature (160°C) and improved chromophore orientation stability. An electro-optic measuring system was established based on this film. The results showed that the film has a linear electro-optic characteristic and the voltage sensitivity was higher than that of a GaAs probe.

Abstract:Nowadays, organic polar crystals are likely to replace and surpass inorganic crystals as the new generation of functional crystal materials due to their ultrafast nonlinear optical response, low dielectric constant, and strong molecular designability. However, these organic polar crystals with excellent properties often have imperfections, such as rough surfaces, twin boundaries, and narrow-line defects in the bulk. Therefore, there is an urgency to establish methods to maximize their properties starting from the mechanism. Herein, this work first reviews asymmetric growth mechanisms of organic polar crystals, including solvent adsorption inhibition, “relay” growth, “self-poisoning”, and so on. Then, the universal characterization methods of organic polar crystals in terms of crystallography and properties are described in detail. Besides, a careful examination of regulation strategies to obtain high-quality organic polar crystals shows that soft templates, polymer additives, and temperature cycling are prospective approaches. Subsequently, the potential of organic polar crystals for nonlinear optical applications has been continuously explored, and their types can be classified into organic small molecules, organic ionic compounds, and organic poled polymers. Finally, the corresponding future opportunities and challenges are put forward based on the shortcomings and application bottlenecks of the current asymmetric growth mechanism of organic polar crystals.

Abstract:Polar molecular crystals, with their densely stacked polar nonlinear optical (NLO) active units, are favored for their large second harmonic generation (SHG) responses and birefringence. However, their potential for practical applications as Infrared (IR) NLO materials has historically been underappreciated due to the weak inter-molecular interaction forces that may compromise their physicochemical properties. In this study, we propose molecular crystals with polar molecular cages as a treasure-house for the development of superior IR NLO materials and a representative system, binary chalcogenide molecular crystals, composed of [P4Sn] (n = 3-9) polar molecular cages, is introduced. These crystals may not only achieve wide band gap, large SHG response, and birefringence in a single structure, but also exhibit favorable physicochemical properties. We subsequently obtained a polar molecular crystal, α-P4S5, which demonstrated exceptional IR optical properties, including a strong SHG response (1.1 × AGS), wide band gap (3.02 eV), large birefringence (0.134@2050 nm), and a broad transmission range (0.41-14.7 μm). Moreover, it showed excellent water resistance and hardness. These findings highlight the potential of polar molecular crystals as a promising platform for the development of high-performance IR NLO materials.

Abstract:Organic crystals have become excellent candidates towards nonlinear optical (NLO) applications as they possess superior second and third order optical nonlinearities and high electro-optic coefficients when compared with their inorganic counterparts. In this direction, 2-Amino-5-bromopyridinium trichloroacetate (2A5BPT), a new organic second-order nonlinear optical compound is synthesized and optical grade single crystals are formed utilizing a slow evaporation solution growth approach at room temperature while using methanol as the solvent. Single crystal X-ray diffraction study shows that the title compound is assigned to monoclinic crystal system having non-centrosymmetric space group Cc . The crystal is transparent ( ̴ 85%) throughout the whole visible spectrum, according to the Ultraviolet-Visble (UV–Vis) spectra, with a cutoff wavelength of 367 nm and an optical energy band gap Eg of 3.32 eV. The crystal possesses good thermal stability. The compound has a 1.6 times greater powder second harmonic generation (SHG) efficiency than potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KDP). The phase matchability of the 2A5BPT is studied through particle size dependence of SHG. The intermolecular connection demonstrated by numerous inter contacts has been shown by a molecular Hirshfeld surface analysis of the crystal structure, and the related 2-dimensional finger print analysis further evaluates the individual contribution from each atom. In order to examine the first order hyperpolarizability, molecular electrostatic potential, and Highest occupied molecular orbital-Lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (HOMO-LUMO) energies, the quantum chemical calculations for the title molecule (2A5BPT) were carried out by density functional theory (DFT) utilizing the B3LYP/6–311++ G (d,p) basis set. According to these results, the 2A5BPT crystal could be suitable for optoelectronic applications.

Abstract:A new organic nonlinear optical crystal 4-N,N-dimethylamino-4′-N′-methyl-stilbazolium 3-carboxy-4-hydroxybenzenesulfonate (DSCHS) has been developed with very promising properties for quadratic nonlinear optical applications. DSCHS single crystals with non-centrosymmetric structure have been obtained from aqueous methanol solution. X-ray crystallographic analysis revealed that the crystal structure of DSCHS is triclinic P1 with the chromophores aligned perfectly parallel, leading to the maximum possible order parameter <cos3θ> = 1 in the crystalline state, which is optimal for electro-optics, THz-wave generation and field detection applications. Kurtz powder test has shown that DSCHS exhibits a very large second-order optical nonlinearity, with a 30 percent higher second-harmonic signal than the well-known organic nonlinear optical crystal 4-N,N-dimethylamino-4′-N′-methyl-stilbazolium tosylate (DAST).

Abstract:The unity of structure-property design and practical synthesis is a key to develop nonlinear optical (NLO) materials. However, many designed structures are hard to get because of the incapability of controlling the arrangement of structural motifs. After careful synthesis, we successfully obtained a new NLO crystal with expected properties, KWO3F, which features a long-range anion-ordered while directed parallel arrangement of [WO5F] d0 transition metal fluorooxo-functional (d0 [TMOF]) motifs. This arrangement is vital to achieve a strong second-harmonic generation (SHG) response, which is proved by dipole moment analyses and theoretical calculations. Remarkably, KWO3F possesses a strong phase-matching SHG response (3 × KDP), high thermal stability (stable up to 350 °C in air), a large laser damage threshold (LDT, 129.7 MW/cm2), a wide transparent window (0.5-10 μm), and a suitable birefringence (0.088 @ 1064 nm). Our research demonstrated that the introduction of the NLO-active d0 [TMOF] motif is an effective strategy to design new potential NLO materials.

Abstract:A type of organic nonlinear optical material EBQ‐T is synthesized, and the EBQ‐T crystal with a size of 11 × 5 × 2 mm3 is grown by the evaporation method. The SHG efficiency of EBQ‐T is about three times that of the KDP crystal. Moreover, optical and electrical properties, and thermal stability of EBQ‐T are systematically studied. A type of organic nonlinear optical (NLO) material EBQ‐T (2‐(4‐ethoxystyryl)‐1‐methyl‐quinolinium 4‐methylbenzenesulfonate) is synthesized, and the EBQ‐T crystal with a size of 11 × 5 × 2 mm3 is grown by the evaporation method in methanol. Single crystal X‐ray diffraction (XRD) analysis confirms that the EBQ‐T crystal belongs to the non‐centrosymmetric Cc space group, and the edge molecular orbital energy gap (HOMO‐LUMO) is calculated. Proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) and fourier transform infra‐red (FT‐IR) tests further verify the crystal functional group. The crystal has a high second‐order nonlinear effect, and the second harmonic generation (SHG) efficiency is about 3 times that of the KDP crystal. The ultraviolet‐visible‐near infrared (UV–vis–NIR) absorption spectrum shows that the EBQ‐T crystal has good transmission performance, which can be up to 76%. Additionally, thermal stability and electrical properties of the EBQ‐T crystal are characterized.

Abstract:The growth of optically good quality bulk size single crystal of pure and additives added 4-N, N-dimethylamino-4-N-methyl stilbazolium tosylate (DAST) crystal is reported by adopting the conventional slow evaporation solution technique. The grown single crystals were identified by single crystal and power X-ray Diffraction analysis. The luminescence study revealed the transition mechanism of ions. By estimating the hardness, Mayer index, yield strength, elastic stiffness constant, fracture toughness, and brittle index for the grown DAST single crystal using the Vickers micro-hardness analyzer, it is revealed that the grown crystal is a soft material. Using a continuous wave Nd-YAG laser and the standard Z-scan technique, the third-order nonlinearity of the pure and doped DAST single crystal was carefully examined. The third-order nonlinear optical properties show significantly higher values of the nonlinear absorption coefficient (β) and third-order nonlinear susceptibility (χ3). The calculated χ3 of grown pure, EDTA, and DTPA doped DAST crystals are 9.41 × 10−6, 8.06 × 10−6 and 7.92 × 10−6, respectively. The enhanced third-order nonlinear behavior suggests that the title compound is suitable for nonlinear optical applications.

Abstract:We present here the synthesis of one enantiomeric pair of metal-organic framework materials comprised of a unique multioriented double-helix structure from an achiral spirocenter ligand. Our study clearly shows that the chiral MOF material encompasses concurrently multiple nonlinear-optical functions in the solid state: the noncentrosymmetric structural feature brings the chiral MOF high second-harmonic-generation efficiency; the incorporation of the spirocenter ligand can efficiently produce two-photon-excited photoluminescence with a larger-action cross-sectional value.

Abstract:The research on nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals is mainly focused on two relatively separate systems, π-conjugated or non-π-conjugated systems, respectively. In this work, we report a new NLO crystal Na 10 Zn(NO 3 ) 4 (SO 3 S) 4 combining inorganic π-conjugated [NO 3 ] and non-π-conjugated heteroanion [S 2 O 3 ] groups, which was synthesized by the aqueous solution method. In the structure, the similar coexistence of planar triangular anionic groups (π-conjugated) and heteroanion tetrahedra (non-π-conjugated) is rarely mentioned, which provides a new approach for designing NLO crystals. Notably, this compound exhibits a phase-matching second-harmonic generation (SHG) response 1.2 times that of KH 2 PO 4 . In addition, birefringence, absorption edge and theoretical calculations are also reported in this article. This work provides a new designing route to expand NLO systems via combining planar π-conjugated and non-π-conjugated heteroanion groups.

Abstract:We demonstrate a method for the realization of highly nonlinear optical 4-(4-dimethylaminostyryl)- 1-methylpyridinium tosylate (DAST) two-dimensional structures by a double-step technique. The desired polymeric structures were first fabricated by using the multiple exposure of the two-beam interference technique, and the DAST nanoscrystals were then prepared inside the air-voids of these photoresist templates, resulting in nonlinear periodic structures. The nonlinear properties were characterized by optical and scanning microscopies, as well as by second-harmonic generation technique.
