Sustainable Energy Technologies and Assessments
Abstract:This study proposes a Real Options approach to investigate the economic feasibility of a wind power plant investment with the option of abandoning along the project life cycle. This novel approach considers uncertainties representation concerning electricity sales revenue in the spot market, and the uncertainty represented by the settlements of energy trading differences. Our results show that when considering these uncertainties, the abandonment option adds 30.3% to the value of the project, and the chance of not abandoning it until the end of the useful life is equal to 70.9%.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper attempts to address the uncertainty faced by wind power project investments in the Brazilian electricity spot market. Specifically, the study evaluates the economic feasibility of wind power projects by introducing the Real Options method, particularly considering the abandonment option during the project lifecycle. The main uncertainties focused on in the paper include: 1. **Uncertainty in electricity sales revenue**: Due to price fluctuations in the electricity spot market, there is uncertainty in the sales revenue of wind power projects. 2. **Uncertainty in energy trading settlement differences**: In the spot market, the settlement price of energy trading differences also affects the project's revenue. By incorporating these uncertainties, the study aims to assess the impact of the abandonment option on project value and provide a more comprehensive investment analysis framework. The results indicate that considering these uncertainties, the abandonment option can increase the project value by 30.3%, and the probability of the project not being abandoned during its entire lifespan is 70.9%.
