Abstract:Quaternary ammonium (QA)-based polymeric sorbents are known to be effective for CO2 capture, especially from ultradilute streams like air. In this work, we address two major challenges in QA sorbent design for application in moisture-swing processes, porosity control and hydrophilicity modulation. Facilely substituting porous CO2-active components for non-porous ones can enhance the sorption kinetics by 4-fold compared to the state-of-art, and micro-mesoporous structures are identified as optimal porous structures. A method to modulate the hydrophilicity of QA-based sorbents is developed using controlled radical polymerization, incorporating fluorine-containing monomers. The CO2 sorption capacity and the tolerance towards moisture are simultaneously enhanced via adjustment of the structure and the content of fluorine-containing blocks. We postulate that porosity and hydrophilicity optimization can make QA-based sorbents adaptive to deployment of scalable moisture-swing processes in varied and complex atmospheric circumstances.

Abstract:ConspectusAdsorption using solid sorbents is emerging as a serious contender to amine-based liquid absorption for postcombustion CO2 capture. In the last 20+ years, significant efforts have been invested in developing adsorption processes for CO2 capture. In particular, significant efforts have been invested in developing new adsorbents for this application. These efforts have led to the generation of hundreds of thousands of (hypothetical and real) adsorbents, e.g., zeolites and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). Identifying the right adsorbent for CO2 capture remains a challenging task. Most studies are focused on identifying adsorbents based on certain adsorption metrics. Recent studies have demonstrated that the performance of an adsorbent is intimately linked to the process in which it is deployed. Any meaningful screening should thus consider the complexity of the process. However, simulation and optimization of adsorption processes are computationally intensive, as they constitute the simultaneous propagation of heat and mass transfer fronts; the process is cyclic, and there are no straightforward design tools, thereby making large-scale process-informed screening of sorbents prohibitive.This Account discusses four papers that develop computational methods to incorporate process-based evaluation for both bottom-up (chemistry to engineering) screening problems and top-down (engineering to chemistry) inverse problems. We discuss the development of the machine-assisted adsorption process learning and emulation (MAPLE) framework, a surrogate model based on deep artificial neural networks (ANNs) that can predict process-level performance by considering both process and material inputs. The framework, which has been experimentally validated, allows for reliable, process-informed screening of large adsorbent databases. We then discuss how process engineering tools can be used beyond adsorbent screening, i.e., to estimate the practically achievable performance and cost limits of pressure vacuum swing adsorption (PVSA) processes should the ideal bespoke adsorbent be made. These studies show what conditions stand-alone PVSA processes are attractive and when they should not be considered. Finally, recent developments in physics-informed neural networks (PINNS) enable the rapid solution of complex partial differential equations, providing tools to potentially identify optimal cycle configurations. Ultimately, we provide areas where further developments are required and emphasize the need for strong collaborations between chemists and chemical engineers to move rapidly from discovery to field trials, as we do not have much time to fulfill commitments to net-zero targets.
Molecular diffusion enhanced performance evaluation of metal-organic frameworks for CO2 capture

Abstract:Molecular diffusion is a fundamental property that limits the performance of solid sorbents in carbon dioxide capture and separation applications. Unique to each sorbent, gas diffusion is determined by the physical and chemical interactions that occur between the gas molecules and a sorbent’s surface atoms. At the process level where carbon dioxide capture performance is validated, however, simulations are typically carried out using generalized parameters that omit the structure-specific, molecular kinetics occurring in each sorbent. Here, we report process-scale simulations of carbon dioxide capture performance in metal-organic frameworks (MOF) informed by molecular adsorption predictions that represent the unique structural properties of each MOF. By evaluating a total of 10,143 MOFs for post-combustion carbon dioxide capture, we demonstrate that the inclusion of the material-specific, molecular diffusion dynamics significantly alters their simulated, process-level performance. Specifically, the inclusion of molecular diffusion relegates up to 20% of the MOF candidates of the initial rank-order while the top 27 MOFs exhibit productivity and energy consumption metrics that surpass those of all known materials used in today’s industrial applications. The method could be applied to evaluate a broader class of solid sorbents, including covalent organic frameworks and zeolites. For validation and reuse, we provide access to data and simulation code.

A Data-Driven Approach to Molten Salt Synthesis of N-Rich Carbon Adsorbents for Selective CO2 Capture

Abstract:Applying a design of experiments methodology to the molten salt synthesis of nanoporous carbons enables inverse design and optimization of nitrogen (N)-rich carbon adsorbents with excellent CO2 /N2 selectivity and appreciable CO2 capacity for carbon capture via swing adsorption from dilute gas mixtures such as natural gas combined cycle flue gas. This data-driven study reveals fundamental structure-function relationships between the synthesis conditions, physicochemical properties, and achievable selective adsorption performance of N-rich nanoporous carbons derived from molten salt synthesis for CO2 capture. Taking advantage of size-sieving separation of CO2 (3.30 Å) from N2 (3.64 Å) within the turbostratic nanostructure of these N-rich carbons, while limiting deleterious N2 adsorption in a weaker adsorption site that harms selectivity, enables a large CO2 capacity (0.73 mmol g-1 at 30.4 Torr and 30 °C) with noteworthy concurrent CO2 /N2 selectivity as predicted by the ideal adsorbed solution theory (SIAST = 246) with an adsorbed phase purity of 91% from a simulated gas stream containing only 4% CO2 . Optimized N-rich porous carbons, with good physicochemical stability, low cost, and moderate regeneration energy, can achieve performance for selective CO2 adsorption that competes with other classes of advanced porous materials such as chemisorbing zeolites and functionalized metal-organic frameworks.

Abstract:Amine-appended metal-organic frameworks of the class Mg 2 (dobpdc) are promising candidates for efficient carbon capture in part due to their step-shaped CO 2 adsorption behavior. However, the existing isotherm models are lacking as they are unable to capture the complicated chemisorption mechanisms which are still not well known for these materials. Here, a chemistry-based isotherm model is developed and fit to experimental CO 2 adsorption data for dmpn-Mg 2 (dobpdc). Reactions for a cooperative adsorption mechanism are proposed, and the reaction pathway is optimally selected. The chemistry-based model shows an improvement in prediction by a factor of 6 when compared to a recent isotherm model in literature. A plant-wide model is developed for a moving bed based adsorber/desorber and techno-economic optimization is performed. For likely values of price and lifespan, the moving bed process gives a significant improvement in economics when compared to a fixed bed contactor process and a traditional MEA capture system.

Abstract:Traditional methods to develop biomass-based carbon adsorbents generally involve carbonization followed by chemical or physical activation. However, routes involving the hydrothermal treatment of biomass are receiving growing interest. In this work, two different strategies for the synthesis of sustainable CO2 adsorbents are compared, i.e., in situ ionic activation and hydrothermal treatment followed by activation with CO2. The latter is a green and simple procedure that does not require the addition of chemicals or acid-washing stages, and which leads to carbon adsorbents with relatively high CO2 adsorption capacity at low pressures, up to 0.64 mmol g−1 at 15 kPa and 50 °C, conditions relevant for postcombustion CO2 capture applications. On the other hand, in situ ionic activation can lead to carbon adsorbents with superior CO2 adsorption capacity in the aforementioned conditions, 0.78 mmol g−1, and with reduced cost and environmental impact compared to conventional chemical activation.

Abstract:Amine-appended metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) of the class Mg2(dobpdc) have garnered attention recently as promising sorbents for CO2 capture but present difficult modeling challenges, in part due to their unique step-shaped adsorption isotherms. In this work, modeling and optimization of Mg2(dobpdc)(3–4–3) (dobpdc4– = 4,4′-dioxidobiphenyl-3,3′dicarboxylate; 3–4–3 = N,N′bis(3-aminopropyl)-1,4-diaminobutane) is undertaken for CO2 capture from a natural gas combined cycle (NGCC) flue gas source. A new isotherm model is developed using a weighted Langmuir isotherm model that is extended to predict multistep isotherm shapes and is fit to experimental data of Mg2(dobpdc)(3–4–3). The isotherm model is used to develop a dynamic, nonisothermal fixed bed contactor model that is validated with experimental breakthrough data. A temperature swing adsorption process using fixed bed contactors is developed to capture CO2 from an ∼600 gross megawatt NGCC power plant. Using a cost model that closely follows the quality guidelines set forth by the National Energy Technology Laboratory, techno-economic optimization is performed using the Framework for Optimization, Quantification of Uncertainty, and Surrogates to minimize the cost of the capture system and subsequently compare it with state-of-the-art amine-based solvent systems. An uncertainty analysis of how the price of the MOF will affect the overall process economics is performed along with possible improvements due to heat recovery and high-temperature regeneration. The results show that the cost of capture is only ∼30% higher than that of solvent capture systems under realistic heat recovery assumptions. This work also leads to an investigation of other fixed bed cycle types and contactor technologies as areas of future work.

Abstract:The search for improved CO 2 capture solvents can be accelerated by deploying computer-aided molecular and process design (CAMPD) techniques to explore large molecular and process domains systematically. However, the direct solution of the integrated molecular-process design problem is very challenging as nonlinear interactions between physical properties and process performance render a large proportion of the search space infeasible. We develop a methodology that enables the direct and reliable solution of CAMPD for absorption-desorption processes, using the state-of-the-art SAFT- γ Mie group contribution approach to predict phase and chemical equilibria. We develop new feasibility tests and show them to be highly efficient at reducing the search space, integrating them in an outer-approximation algorithm. The framework is applied to design an aqueous solvent and CO 2 chemical absorption-desorption process, with 150 CAMPD instances across three case studies solved successfully. The optimal solvents are more promising than those obtained with sequential molecular design approaches.

Abstract:Despite the known impacts on climate change of carbon dioxide emissions, the continued use of fossil fuels for energy generation leading to the emission of carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere is evident. Therefore, innovation to address and reduce CO2 emissions from industrial operations remains an urgent and crucial priority. A viable strategy in the area is postcombustion capture mainly through absorption by aqueous alkanolamines, which focuses on the separation of CO2 from flue gas, despite its limitations. Within this context, porous materials, particularly metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), have arisen as favorable alternatives owing to their significant adsorption capacity, selectivity, and reduced regeneration energy demands. This research evaluates the engineering insights into tailored MOFs for enhanced CO2 capture, focusing on three series of MOFs (ZIF, UiO-66, and BTC) to investigate the effects of organic ligands, functional groups, and metal ions. The evaluation encompassed a range of aspects including adsorption isotherms of pure gases [CO2 and nitrogen (N2)] and mixed gas mixture (CO2 and N2 with 15:85% ratio), along with utilization of the ideal adsorbed solution theory (IAST) to simulate multicomponent gas adsorption isotherms. Moreover, the reliability of IAST for mixed gas adsorption prediction has been investigated in detail. The research offers valuable insights into the correlation between the characteristics of MOFs and their effectiveness in gas separation and how these characteristics contribute to the differences between IAST predictions and experimental results. The findings enhance the understanding of how to enhance MOF characteristics in order to reduce CO2 emissions and also highlight the need for advanced models that consider thermodynamic nonidealities to accurately predict the behavior of mixed gas adsorption in MOFs. As a result, the incorporation of MOFs with enhanced predictability and reliability into CO2 capture industrial processes is facilitated.
Multi-Scale Computational Design of Metal-Organic Frameworks for Carbon Capture Using Machine Learning and Multi-Objective Optimization

Abstract:In this article, we computationally design a series of Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) optimized for post-combustion carbon capture. Our computational workflow includes assembling building blocks and topologies into an initial set of hypothetical MOFs, using genetic algorithms to optimize this initial set for high CO2/N2 selectivity, and further evaluating the top materials through process-level modeling of their performance in a modified Skarstrom cycle. We identify two groups of MOFs that exhibit excellent process performance: one with relatively small pores in the range of 3-5Å and another with larger pores of 6-30Å. The performance of the first group is driven effectively by the exclusion of N2 from adsorption, with binding sites able to accommodate only CO2 molecules. The second group, with larger pores, features binding sites where CO2 molecules form multiple interactions with oxygen and functional groups of several building blocks, leading to high CO2/N2 selectivity. Within the employed process model and its assumptions, the materials generated in this study substantially outperform 13X reference zeolites, in silico optimized ion-exchanged LTA zeolites, and CALF-20. Although this study does not make any statements regarding the synthesizability, stability, or interaction with water of the proposed materials, the discovery of several hundred MOFs with promising characteristics gives us hope that some may advance to laboratory testing and possible scale-up.

Abstract:The atmospheric CO 2 concentration continues a rapid rise to its current record high value of 416 ppm for the time being. It calls for advanced CO 2 capture technologies. One of the attractive technologies is physical adsorption‐based separation, which shows easy regeneration and long cycle stability, and thus reduced energy penalties and cost. The extensive research on this topic is evidenced by the growing body of scientific and technical literature. The progress spans from the innovation of novel porous adsorbents to practical separation practices. Major CO 2 capture materials include the most widely‐used industrially relevant porous carbons, zeolites, activated alumina, mesoporous silica, and the newly emerging metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent‐organic framework (COFs), etc. The key intrinsic properties such as pore structure, surface chemistry, preferable adsorption sites and other structural features that would affect CO 2 capture capacity, selectivity, and recyclability are first discussed. The industrial relevant variables such as particle size of adsorbents, the mechanical strength, adsorption heat management and other technological advances are equally important, even more crucial when scaling up from bench and pilot‐scale to demonstration and commercial scale. Therefore, we aim to bring a full picture of the adsorption‐based CO 2 separation technologies, from adsorbent design, intrinsic properties evaluation to performance assessment not only under the ideal equilibrium conditions but also in realistic pressure swing adsorption processes .

Abstract:Design and optimization of CO 2 capture processes have become a tremendously active area of research particularly in the past decade. In this context, development of intelligent techniques on the basis of first-principles models coupled with data-driven algorithms for such purpose looks very promising. In a series of works, we intend to present mechanism approaches in order to develop applicable structures for design and optimization of the CO 2 capture processes of interest via hybrid models. A systematic method is presented for optimizing a process for capturing CO 2 from a confined space through a Vacuum Pressure Swing Adsorption (VPSA) operation using a Hybrid Surrogate Model (HSM) and Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm (NSGA-III). The surrogate model is structured based on the VPSA process model offered in the Aspen Adsorption® environment and an artificial intelligence (AI) data-driven algorithm. The developed HSM is then used to predict the key process outputs including CO 2 purity, air recovery ratio and energy consumption rate. Accordingly, the optimized parameters are re-substituted into the VPSA process simulator for further data processing. It is demonstrated that the proposed model architecture provides considerable computational efficiency for the process optimization with only 48 h to complete the corresponding evolutionary search, while the optimization time by the conventional NSGA-direct method is close to 1129 h. The optimization results also show that the CO 2 purity changes from 1000 ppm to 399 ppm, the air recovery ratio remains at 93 %, and the energy consumption per unit product (ECP) decreases by 38.5 % to 99.7 kJ·Nm −3 air after an optimized air purification operation. The idea of chemical mechanism and industrial data twin modeling in this study holds substantial importance for the development of digital chemical twin systems and the process optimization of intelligent factory.

Abstract:The process of CO2 capturing using solid sorbents is highly cost-effective and energy efficient. In this research, experimental and computational studies of CO2 sorption from a flue gas stream using potassium carbonate particles have been conducted, employing a laboratory scale bubbling gas solid fluidized bed reactor. The influences of the main operating conditions such as CO 2 and H2O concentrations and gas mixture velocity on the CO2 removal have been investigated. An Eulerian–Eulerian two-fluid approach based upon the kinetic theory of granular flow with modified energy-minimization multi-scale (EMMS) interphase exchange coefficient was applied to describe the gas–solid hydrodynamic in the fluidized bed. The computational model results of the slug rise velocity, bubbles, and solid phase behavior and CO2 concentration along the fluidized bed height have been compared with corresponding experimental data. The CFD simulation results are in good agreement with the measured experimental data. Both simulation results and experimental measurements of the outlet CO2 concentration show that good treatment efficiency can be obtained by maintaining H2O concentration as the maximum value. The CO2 removal rate increased due to the reduction of gas velocity as we ll as increasing H2O concentration. Among the factors studied, H2O concentration has the most significant impact on the CO2 adsorption.

Abstract:Reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions urgently requires the large-scale deployment of carbon-capture technologies. These technologies must separate CO2 from various sources and deliver it to different sinks1,2. The quest for optimal solutions for specific source-sink pairs is a complex, multi-objective challenge involving multiple stakeholders and depends on social, economic and regional contexts. Currently, research follows a sequential approach: chemists focus on materials design3 and engineers on optimizing processes4,5, which are then operated at a scale that impacts the economy and the environment. Assessing these impacts, such as the greenhouse gas emissions over the plant's lifetime, is typically one of the final steps6. Here we introduce the PrISMa (Process-Informed design of tailor-made Sorbent Materials) platform, which integrates materials, process design, techno-economics and life-cycle assessment. We compare more than 60 case studies capturing CO2 from various sources in 5 global regions using different technologies. The platform simultaneously informs various stakeholders about the cost-effectiveness of technologies, process configurations and locations, reveals the molecular characteristics of the top-performing sorbents, and provides insights on environmental impacts, co-benefits and trade-offs. By uniting stakeholders at an early research stage, PrISMa accelerates carbon-capture technology development during this critical period as we aim for a net-zero world.

Abstract:Energy &Environment, Ahead of Print. A pilot-scale bubble column contactor has been utilized for carbon dioxide chemisorption from simulated flue gas in the temperature range 30°C to 50°C. The influence of the most important operating parameters has been investigated. A total of 25 experiments were designed using the response surface methodology (RSM) and were then carried out in the bubble contact column. The results revealed that the liquid volume in the column, the alkaline concentration, and the temperature had a positive effect, while the gas hold-up had a negative effect on the CO2 removal efficiency. A statistical model has been developed using the RSM D-optimal experimental design method. To achieve the highest CO2 chemisorption, several operating conditions have been optimized. Abstract:Carbon dioxide capture and mitigation form a key part of the technological response to combat climate change and reduce CO2 emissions. Solid materials capable of reversibly absorbing CO2 have been the focus of intense research for the past two decades, with promising stability and low energy costs to implement and operate compared to the more widely used liquid amines. In this review, we explore the fundamental aspects underpinning solid CO2 sorbents based on alkali and alkaline earth metal oxides operating at medium to high temperature: how their structure, chemical composition, and morphology impact their performance and long-term use. Various optimization strategies are outlined to improve upon the most promising materials, and we combine recent advances across disparate scientific disciplines, including materials discovery, synthesis, and in situ characterization, to present a coherent understanding of the mechanisms of CO2 absorption both at surfaces and within solid materials.

Abstract:Limiting the increase of CO2 in the atmosphere is one of the largest challenges of our generation<a href="/articles/s41586-019-1798-7#ref-CR1">1</a>. Because carbon capture and storage is one of the few viable technologies that can mitigate current CO2 emissions<a href="/articles/s41586-019-1798-7#ref-CR2">2</a>, much effort is focused on developing solid adsorbents that can efficiently capture CO2 from flue gases emitted from anthropogenic sources<a href="/articles/s41586-019-1798-7#ref-CR3">3</a>. One class of materials that has attracted considerable interest in this context is metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), in which the careful combination of organic ligands with metal-ion nodes can, in principle, give rise to innumerable structurally and chemically distinct nanoporous MOFs. However, many MOFs that are optimized for the separation of CO2 from nitrogen<a href="#ref-CR4">4</a>,<a href="#ref-CR5">5</a>,<a href="#ref-CR6">6</a>,<a href="/articles/s41586-019-1798-7#ref-CR7">7</a> do not perform well when using realistic flue gas that contains water, because water competes with CO2 for the same adsorption sites and thereby causes the materials to lose their selectivity. Although flue gases can be dried, this renders the capture process prohibitively expensive<a href="/articles/s41586-019-1798-7#ref-CR8">8</a>,<a href="/articles/s41586-019-1798-7#ref-CR9">9</a>. Here we show that data mining of a computational screening library of over 300,000 MOFs can identify different classes of strong CO2-binding sites—which we term 'adsorbaphores'—that endow MOFs with CO2/N2 selectivity that persists in wet flue gases. We subsequently synthesized two water-stable MOFs containing the most hydrophobic adsorbaphore, and found that their carbon-capture performance is not affected by water and outperforms that of some commercial materials. Testing the performance of these MOFs in an industrial setting and consideration of the full capture process—including the targeted CO2 sink, such as geological storage or serving as a carbon source for the chemical industry—will be necessary to identify the optimal separation material.

Abstract:Discovery of new adsorbent materials with a high CO2 working capacity could help reduce CO2 emissions from newly commissioned power plants using precombustion carbon capture. High-throughput computational screening efforts can accelerate the discovery of new adsorbents but sometimes require significant computational resources to explore the large space of possible materials. We report the in silico discovery of high-performing adsorbents for precombustion CO2 capture by applying a genetic algorithm to efficiently search a large database of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for top candidates. High-performing MOFs identified from the in silico search were synthesized and activated and show a high CO2 working capacity and a high CO2/H2 selectivity. One of the synthesized MOFs shows a higher CO2 working capacity than any MOF reported in the literature under the operating conditions investigated here.

Abstract:Capturing CO2 directly from the atmosphere using chemicals (air capture) is a strategic approach to mitigate global warming. Before the widespread deployment of air capture, technical challenges, such as the poor kinetics under ultra-low CO2 concentrations, must be addressed. This work aims to characterize and optimize the mass transfer process of a novel moisture swing adsorption method for air capture. The phase inversion technique is employed to fabricate a heterogeneous structured sorbent. The modified shrinking core model and a revolving bed reactor are developed to evaluate the adsorption kinetics. The sorbents exhibit significant diffusion-controlled kinetics under most of the measurement conditions. The effects of ambient conditions on kinetics, such as temperature and relative humidity, were investigated. The diffusion and chemical reaction rate drop sharply as the temperature decreases from 20 to 0 degrees C. The relative humidity shows a more obvious effect on the chemical reaction than on the physical diffusion process due to the mechanisms of hydration water involved in the chemical reaction. On the other hand, reducing the size of the sorbent particles to several micrometers could effectively avoid the substantial reduction in the adsorption rate under lower temperatures. Using the determined kinetic parameters, suggestions for kinetics optimization are proposed for air capture under different weather conditions. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
