Abstract:A clean and low-carbon district heating system (DHS) is critical to China’s carbon neutralization mission. To realize a low-carbon DHS, one possible approach is to transform the technical structure of DHS from conventionally centralized mode to a hybrid mode allowing both centralized and decentralized heating. At this moment, current researches in this field focus on energy saving of primary loop and the large-area heating substations in existing DHS. However, the issue of heating substation granularity (SG) analysis and how it affects the selection of heating technical modes are rarely discussed. This paper reviews the current studies in DHS energy-saving design and optimization and proposes the definition of SG in the DHS with a special focus on two granularity levels: region level and building level. Based on that, two corresponding technical modes are selected, which are conventional district heating substation (CDHS) and building-wise heating substation (BHS). Three aspects of evaluation indexes (economy, energy, carbon emission) are then formulated and used in the two technical modes comparison under a range of covered heating areas. This work carries out technical and economic analysis to investigate the impact of SG based on the conditions of two real heating systems in northern China. With the increase of heating area, the area-specific initial investment of CDHS decreases while its area-specific energy consumption increases, however, the area-specific initial investment and energy consumption of BHS do not change. Results also show that the annual cost is lower in the selected cases in BHS than that in CDHS and a lower ambient temperature leads to a higher energy-saving benefit under a granularity of building level where BHS mode is used. Based on the annual cost method (ACM), such mode can reduce 14% of the cost in Heilongjiang Province and 4% in Hebei Province respectively, when compared with CDHS mode. The results from this study can provide support for the planning and design of the future low-carbon DHS in terms of its heating technical mode selection.
