Abstract:A numerical simulation of the internal flow field in a forward-curved centrifugal fan with high pressure has been developed with the three-dimensional Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equations and RNG k-ε turbulence model. The comparison between computational and measured values shows good agreement and the result of numerical simulation gives a good prediction of overall performance including total pressure rise and efficiency. Some essential characteristics of the internal flow field, such as flow separation, circulatory secondary flow, and jet-wake flow, have been observed by this numerical simulation. There is separation flow in impeller passage at low flow rate, the second flow occurs in the scroll, and the jet-wake flow exists in outlet of impeller. Additionally, the flow through the gap between inlet and impeller obviously affects the flow of impeller inlet and front plate area.

Abstract:Based on the Navier-Stokes equations and the Spalart-Allmaras turbulence model, three dimensional turbulent flow fields in centrifugal pump with long-mid-short blade complex impeller are calculated and analyzed numerically. The relative velocity and pressure distributions in the flowpart are obtained. It is found that the flow in the passage of the complex impeller is unsymmetrical due to the joint action between volute and impeller. The back-flow region is at inlet of long-blade suction side, near middle part of long-blade pressure side and outlet of short-blade suction side. The flow near volute throat is affected greatly by volute. The relative velocity is large and it is easy to bring back flow at outlet of the complex impeller near volute throat. The static and total pressure rise uniformly from inlet to outlet in the impeller. At impeller outlet, the pressure periodically decreases from pressure side to suction side, and then the static pressure sharply rise near the throat. The experimental results show that the back flow in the impeller has an important influence on the performance of pump.

Abstract:The unsteady flow field in a multistage centrifugal pump was simulated with ANSYS-CFX code based on transient rotor-stator method, and Shear Stress Transport (SST) turbulence model to investigate the pressure fluctuations in the three stages passages. With the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) analysis, the pressure fluctuations and frequency domains are analyzed and compared between stages. The numerical results show that the pressure fluctuates at the blade passage frequency, and the maximum amplitude of blade passage frequency occurs in the region from the rotor to the stator when the impeller blade gets close to the diffuser vane leading edge. The pressure pulsation period mainly associated with the number of impeller blades, but the influence gradually reduce when the fluids flow into the diffuser. The flow patterns and pressure fluctuation between stags are similar.

Abstract:The unsteady flow in a centrifugal pump is numerically simulated by using the RNG k-e turbulence model and the Zwart-Gerber-Belamri cavitation model. The influence of condensation coefficient of the cavitation model on numerical simulation is analyzed. According to the experimental result, the value of condensation coefficient is modified. The calculated variation of pump head with the available net positive suction head is in good agreement with the experimental data, so the accuracy and reliability of the numerical modal and method are verified. The results demonstrate that the dominant frequencies of pressure fluctuation in the volute at operating conditions of non-cavitation and cavitation are both the blade pass frequency. The cavitation has great influence on pressure fluctuation in volute. The maximum amplitudes of pressure fluctuation appear at the tongue of the volute and the first section of the volute for non-cavitation and cavitation conditions, respectively. It is caused by the strength of vortex enhances at cavitation condition and changing with time, which disturbs the flow in the first section.

Abstract:As a kind of general equipment for fluid transportation, pumps were widely used in industry which includes many applications of high pressure, temperature and toxic fluids transportations. Performances of pumps affect the safety and reliability of the whole special equipment system. Cavitation in pumps cause the loss of performance and erosion of the blade, which could affect the running stability and reliability of the pump system. In this paper, a kind of numerical method for cavitaion performance prediction was presented. In order to investigate the accuracy of the method, CFD flow analysis and cavitation performance predictions of a mixed-flow pump were carried out. The numerical results were compared with the test results.

Abstract:To analyze the internal flow in screw centrifugal pulp pump and make the basis of hydraulic model optimizing,commercial CFD code Fluent was used to simulate the single-phase flow and solid/liquid two-phase flow in screw centrifugal pump.The modeling method of screw impeller and simulation method of flow field were introduced.Velocity distributing and pressure distributing in the pump were analyzed,and the hydraulic performance of the pump was predicted based on flow simulation.The simulation result agrees well with the experimental result in the single-phase flow condition.Ulteriorly,the solid phase and liquid phase distributing in the screw centrifugal pump under given solid phase consistency and granule diameter was analyzed by solid/liquid two-phase flow simulation.It put up good referenced value in screw centrifugal pump model optimizing.

Abstract:Unsteady flow phenomena like rotating stall frequently occur in centrifugal pumps under off-design conditions. Rotating stall could lead to flow instabilities and pressure pulsation, which affect the normal operation of pumps. The mechanism of rotating stall has not been sufficiently understood in previous researches. In this study, the impact of rotating stall in the impeller on centrifugal pump stability and pressure pulsation is numerically investigated. This paper aims to detect the unsteady flow characteristics inside the centrifugal pump by computational fluid dynamics technology, to analyze pressure pulsations caused by rotating stall and to explore the propagation mechanism of rotating stall. Unsteady numerical simulations are performed by ANSYS 16.0 to model the unsteady flow within the entire flow passage of a centrifugal pump under 0.4QBEP and 0.6QBEP working conditions. Through flow characteristics research, the generation and propagation of rotating stall are discovered. Flow separation appears near the leading edge of the pressure side and transforms into vortices, which move along the passage. Meanwhile, the stall cells rotate circumferentially in the impeller. Additionally, frequencies and amplitudes of pressure pulsations related to rotating stall are investigated by spectrum analysis. The results detect a possible characteristic frequency of rotating stall and show that the interaction between stall cells and the volute tongue could have an influence on rotor–stator interaction (RSI).

Abstract:Intense fluid-dynamic interaction at the impeller outlet strongly affects the unsteady flow and pressure stability within the centrifugal pump. In order to have a better understanding of the pressure fluctuation of centrifugal pumps, a numerical calculation is carried out by using the RNG k-epsilon turbulence model under various flow rates. The numerical calculation results are compared with the experimental results in order to verify the reliability of the calculation model. The amplitude and frequency distribution of pressure fluctuation at the impeller outlet is obtained and analyzed in the time and frequency domain. The research results show that the blade passing frequency is the dominant frequency of the pressure fluctuation. And the pressure fluctuation is a periodic fluctuation. As the flow rate decreases, the periodicity of the pressure fluctuation decreases. Besides, the amplitude and intensity of pressure fluctuation are closely related to flow rate and spatial location. At the low flow rate, the amplitude of pressure fluctuation in the time domain and frequency domain is enlarged greatly, especially near the tongue region. The pressure difference distribution on both sides of the blade surface is extremely uneven, and the pressure changes significantly.

Abstract:Insufficient understanding of flow instability interaction between hump characteristic and the rotating stall is a major problem in the application of mixed flow pumps. In this paper, the unsteady flow characteristics of a mixed flow pump are studied numerically to understand the hump characteristic generating mechanism using a modified SST k -u partially averaged Navier-Stokes (MSST PANS) model. The predicted pump characteristic curves show good agreement with experimental data. Fundamental results on time-averaged flow pattern and energy loss distributions depict that the substantial rise of energy loss in the pump impeller is the main reason for the hump characteristic. Detailed flow structures show the peak regions of circumferential vorticity (Uq) and boundary vortex flux (BVF) are located at the blade tip near the trailing edge (TE) and leading edge (LE). Further analysis on the flow angle and blade loading are carried out. The results indicate that the peak region located near the LE of spanwise = 0.8 and streamwise = 0.3 is the source of the rotating stall evolution. In this process, the substantial reduction in the blade loading occurs near the LE, eventually induces the head drop. Finally, pressure fluctuations analysis depicts that low-frequency signal is observed induced by the rotating stall evolution. (C) 2020 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

Abstract:Cavitation is an unsteady phenomenon, which is nearly inevitable in pumps. It would degrade the pump performance, generate vibrations and noises, and even erode pump flow passage components. The double suction centrifugal pump at design flow rate and large flow rate is numerically simulated using the k-omega turbulence model and the mass transport cavitation model. As a result, the calculated variation of pump head with pump inlet pressure agreed well with the experimental data. The results demonstrate that the numerical model and method can accurately predict the cavitation flows in a double suction centrifugal pump. The cavitation characteristics are analysed in great details. In addition, based on the calculation results, the reason that the plunge of pump head curve is revealed. It is found that the steep fall of pump head happens when the cavity reaches the blade to blade throat and the micro-vortex group appears at the back of the blade suction side. At the same time, this practice can provide guidance for the optimal design of double suction pumps.

Abstract:Nowadays, pumps of different size are needed for a great variety of purposes. In the past, both computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and experimental flow visualization were performed to reveal flow characteristics within centrifugal pumps, to examine a specific design and to guide design improvement (see Burgreen et al. 1996, 2000). Li et al. (2007) studied the interior viscous flow in a mini pump with an asymmetric axis using CFD and PIV (particle image velocimetry) for improvement of the pump design. Matsui et al. (2002) adopted the the k-ω model in the CFD simulation for a centrfugal pump, and the computational grid system only consisted of one flow passage for LDV (laser Dopler velocimetry) test impeller. Byskov et al. (2003a) and Pedersen & Larsen (2003 b) investigated the flow inside the rotating passages of a six-bladed shrouded centrifugal pump impeller using LES simulation and PIV and LDV measurements. The velocities predicted with LES were in good agreement with the experimental data. The two RANS simulations were, however, not able to predict this complex flow field. It was thus found that using LES for analyzing the flow field in centrifugal pumps could shed light on basic fluid dynamic with a satisfactory accuracy compared to experiments. A transient simulation was used to study the effects of pulsatile blood flow due to the heartbeat through blood pumps by Song et al. (2003). The microsized geometry of the pump made the choice of turbulence models significant for the accuracy of calculation. The comparison showed that the k-ω model gave better predictions of the shear level within the near wall regions than the k-e model. Guleren and Pinarbasi (2004) indicated that the stallcell size extended from one to two diffuser passages. Comparisons of the computational results with experimental data were made and showed good agreement. The unsteady flow in a low specific speed radial diffuser was simulated by the CFD code CFX-10 by Feng et al. (2009). The PIV and LDV measurements had been conducted to validate the CFD results. Both the phase-averaged velocity fields and the turbulence fields obtained from different methods are presented and compared. In this study, in order to get more information about the internal flow of a centrifugal pump, both experimental measurement and numerical simulation are engaged. Abstract:To further investigate the mechanism of phase separation and gas accumulation in multiphase rotodynamic pumps, on the assumption of tiny bubbly flow, based on a two-fluid model, the gas-liquid two-phase unsteady flow in a multiphase rotodynamic pump, with an IGVF (inlet gas volume fraction) of 15%, was numerically simulated. In the simulation, the k-ε based SST (Shear Stress Transport) model was used for turbulence; the drag force and the added mass force were taken into consideration in the interfacial momentum transfer terms; the steady solution of single water phase flow was specified as the initial flow field. Under this IGVF, five flow rate conditions were simulated, and taking the most optimal working condition as an example, the two-phase flow field and its temporal evolution were analyzed; the evolution characteristic and the calculation method of pump head were explored. The results show that, due to different centrifugal forces on the two phases, the gas is distributed mainly around the hub; affected by the change of the flow passage and the rotation of the impeller, the air mass starts to form at the inlet of the impeller. In addition, the gas volume fraction field and pressure field fluctuate in transportation, which results in severe oscillation of the pump head and instability of the pump system. The comparison of the head characteristics between the simulation and the experiment validates the reliability of the numerical model and method.

Abstract:A pump is one of the most important machines in the processes and flow systems. The operation of multistage centrifugal pumps could generate pressure fluctuations and instabilities that may be detrimental to the performance and integrity of the pump. In this paper, a numerical study of the influence of pressure fluctuations and unsteady flow patterns was undertaken in the pump flow channel of three configurations with different diffuser vane numbers. It was found that the amplitude of pressure fluctuation in the diffuser was increased gradually with the increase in number of diffuser vanes. The lower number of diffuser vanes was beneficial to obtain a weaker pressure fluctuation intensity. With the static pressure gradually increasing, the effects of impeller blade passing frequency attenuated gradually, and the effect of diffuser vanes was increased gradually.

Abstract:Centrifugal pump is widely used in agricultural irrigation, petrochemical, mining, metallurgy and other industries. A special centrifugal pump with elbow pipe is researched in this paper. The flow rate and rotating speed change rapidly, especially in elbow pipe, causing serious pressure fluctuation and complex vorticity in the centrifugal pump. A user-defined function to solve the angular momentum equation was calculated the pump rotational speed. Unsteady numerical simulation with SST turbulence model is carried out and Short time Fourier transform (STFT) and vorticity strength are used to analyse the pressure fluctuation and vortexes respectively. The results indicate that the rotational speed first decreases to zero and then reversely increases to runaway speed. Large area vorticity appeared at the elbow pipe when the high amplitude frequency of pressure fluctuation increased. The change law of main frequency of pressure fluctuation at the elbow pipe is consistent with the rotational speed change ruler, which is equal to blade passing frequency (BPF). The main source of pressure fluctuation was rotor stator interaction. This study's results provide a meaningful reference about pump runaway process caused by power failure, leading to the prevention of dangerous situations, for safe operations of the pumping unit.

Abstract:Dredge pumps are usually operated at part-load conditions, in which the low-solidity centrifugal impeller could experience large internal energy dissipation, related to flow separation and vortices. In this study, SST k-ω and SAS-SST turbulence models were used, in steady and unsteady simulations, for a low-head centrifugal pump with a three-bladed impeller. The main focus of the present work was to investigate the internal energy dissipation in rotating an impeller at part-load operating conditions, related to flow separation and stall. The unsteady nature of these operating conditions was investigated. Performance experiments and transient wall pressure measurements were conducted for validation. A methodology for internal energy dissipation analysis has been proposed; and the unsteady pressure fluctuations were analyzed in the rotating impeller. The internal power losses in the volute and the impeller were mostly found in the centrifugal pump. The rotating stall phenomenon occurred with flow separation and detachment at the part-load operating condition, leading to a dissipation of the internal energy in the impeller. The rotating impeller experienced pressure fluctuations with low frequencies, at part-load operating conditions, while in the design operating condition only experienced rotating frequency.

Abstract:Flow in a typical centrifugal pump is known to be unsteady due to flow instabilities and mutual interactions between the rotating part and the stationary parts. Flow instabilities are mostly viscous phenomena such as boundary layer separation and vortex shedding that produces relatively low frequency and small amplitude pressure fluctuations. Mutual interaction between the impeller blades and the guide vane diffuser produces relatively high frequency and large amplitude pressure fluctuations. This phenomenon is more closely related to compressibility than viscosity. It is important because it may cause structural vibration and noise.In this paper, the steady and unsteady turbulent flow through the whole flow passage of an entire centrifugal pump, has been computed to predict the pressure fluctuation of flow in the pump.

Abstract:The unsteady non-cavitation and cavitation turbulent flows in a centrifugal pump at partial load condition are numerically investigated by CFX 13.0. The numerical framework employs the combination of RNG k-epsilon turbulence model and transport equation cavitation model, in which the effects of compressibility of fluid on cavitation region and pressure fluctuation on saturation pressure are both taken into consideration. The good agreement between the numerical and experimental values validates that the numerical framework can accurately predict the turbulent flows in the centrifugal pump. The complex flow characteristics in impeller at non-cavitation and cavitation conditions are revealed. For the non-cavitation flow, the dominant frequencies of pressure fluctuation of monitoring points in impeller are all the Impeller Rotation Frequency 24.17Hz. The maximum value of pressure fluctuation on the blade pressure side appears at the 0.8 chord length from the blade leading edge due to a clockwise rotating vortex, which incepts, develops and disappears when the corresponding blade passes through the volute tongue. The dominant frequencies of pressure fluctuation of monitoring points in volute are the Blade Pass Frequency 145 Hz or twice of it. The maximum value of pressure fluctuation in the volute appears near the tongue region, where the flow fields are uneven with strong second flow in the cross section. For the cavitation flow, as the cavitation develops at the blade leading edge, the turbulent flows in the impeller are greatly influenced by the bubble shedding and collapse. The maximum values of pressure fluctuation in impeller increase with the development of cavitation, and reach the largest magnification of about 2.0 in comparison to the non-cavitation flow when the pressure at the pump inlet is very low. The complicated phenomenon of unsteady turbulent flow in a centrifugal pump indicates that the vortex has great influence on the flow pattern.

Abstract:To investigate the stalled flow on the off-design conditions in a pump turbine's pump regime, three dimensional flow simulation using Shear-Stress Transport (SST)k-ω Model was carried out for the whole configuration. Numerical analysis techniques were performed on the commercial FLUENT package program assuming steady, incompressible flow conditions with flowrate (Q/QN = 0.15) and hybrid mesh system was generated. Through an effective validation of the computation results and detailed flow analysis, it showed that different stalled flow patterns existed in the runner, guide vanes and stay vanes. And the flow in the vaned passage alternated between outward jetting when the pressure was high and reverse flow when the pressure was low. Besides, there was a consistent high-speed leakage flow in the gap between the runner and the vanes. Three dimensional effect was very obvious both in the runner passage and the vane.

Abstract:In this study, a modified partially averaged Navier-Stokes model (MSST PANS) is proposed by treating a modified shear stress transport (SST) k-ω model as the parent turbulence model. The unstable turbulent flow in a centrifugal pump that considers the curvature and rotation effect is investigated as the test case to evaluate the performance of the MSST PANS model and analyze the flow instability in a centrifugal pump. The SST k-ω and the standard k-ε PANS models are also evaluated for comparison. Results show that the MSST PANS model exhibits excellent performance and delivers the most satisfactory prediction results of the positive slope of the characteristic curve, time-averaged internal flows, and velocity profiles. The energy loss based on the energy balance equations is adopted to provide an explanation of the internal flow evolutions in pumps. The findings also indicate energy loss distribution is associated with the positive slope phenomenon. The high-velocity gradient flows at the entrance of the blade-to-blade passage and the reverse flows at the impeller exit are the main reasons for the high turbulent kinetic energy in the impeller. The MSST PANS model demonstrates promising applications in the field of hydraulic machinery, where unstable turbulent flows are prevalent.

Abstract:Abstract At present, pumped-storage power technology is the only available and effective way for the load balancing and energy storage in the grid network scale. During the frequent switch back and forth conditions, there are severe pressure pulsation and cavitation in pump-turbines. However, their generation mechanism has not been determined yet. This work contributes to the numerical simulation of the transient behaviors in a prototype pump-turbine during the load rejection process with special emphasis on cavitation effect. In this study, the two-dimensional dynamic remesh and variable speed slide mesh methodologies were employed to perform the simulation of the transient single-phase flow and cavitation flow in a pump-turbine. The simulation results of single-phase flow and cavitation flow were both consistent with the experimental data except in local regions based on the experimental validation of prototype tests. However, the numerical results considering cavitation effects have a better behavior than those of single-phase flow in the predictions of pressure pulsation and rotational speed. Then, the cavitation flow simulation results were analyzed deeply, especially in pressure pulsation and cavitation flow field. Analysis revealed that three typical complex frequency components of pressure were captured in the cavitation flow, which significantly affect the axial hydraulic thrust on the runner. And it is validated that they are primarily induced by the cavity collapse near the trailing edges of the runner blades in reverse pump mode and the interaction between cavitation and vortex rope in draft-tube in turbine mode.
