Abstract:Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) promise researchers a powerful instrument for observing sizable phenomena with fine granularity over long periods. Since the accuracy of data is important to the whole system's performance, detecting nodes with faulty readings is an essential issue in network management. As a complementary solution to detecting nodes with functional faults, this article, proposes FIND, a novel method to detect nodes with data faults that neither assumes a particular sensing model nor requires costly event injections. After the nodes in a network detect a natural event, FIND ranks the nodes based on their sensing readings as well as their physical distances from the event. FIND works for systems where the measured signal attenuates with distance. A node is considered faulty if there is a significant mismatch between the sensor data rank and the distance rank. Theoretically, we show that average ranking difference is a provable indicator of possible data faults. FIND is extensively evaluated in simulations and two test bed experiments with up to 25 MicaZ nodes. Evaluation shows that FIND has a less than 5% miss detection rate and false alarm rate in most noisy environments.

Abstract:From environmental monitoring to industrial automation, wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are essential in many different applications. However, the reliability and robustness of WSNs are often compromised by faults such as node failures, communication disruptions, and data packet losses. This paper presents a comprehensive approach to fault management in WSNs, encompassing fault detection, localization, and recovery strategies. In the fault detection phase, machine learning techniques, including the utilization of the MobileNet model, are employed to classify normal and faulty behavior based on sensor data. Statistical analysis methods, such as hypothesis testing, complement machine learning approaches to detect anomalies in sensor readings. A hybrid approach combining machine learning with rule-based systems enhances fault detection accuracy. Subsequently, fault localization techniques leverage network topology analysis and localization algorithms to identify the location of faulty nodes within the network. By analyzing the connectivity between nodes and potential communication paths, vulnerable areas are pinpointed, facilitating efficient fault localization efforts. In the fault recovery phase, dynamic reconfiguration algorithms dynamically adjust network routing and data aggregation strategies in response to detected faults. Redundancy mechanisms, dynamic reconfiguration, and load balancing techniques are deployed to mitigate the impact of node failures and ensure uninterrupted data flow.

Abstract:The nodes within wireless sensor network (WSN) have low reliability, and are easy to act abnormally and produce erroneous data. To address the problem, we propose a distributed fault correction algorithm, which makes use of correlation among data of adjacent nodes and the correlation between current data and historical data on a single node. The algorithm could correct measurement errors every time nodes take measures. Simulation results show that the algorithm could help correct lots of errors, and only introduce very few errors, while still keep effective for nodes near event region border where many existed algorithms failed.

Abstract:Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) are built with miniature sensor nodes (SN), which are deployed into the geographical location being sensed to monitor environmental conditions, which transfer the sensed physical information to the base station for further processing. The sensor nodes frequently experience node failure as a result of their hostile deployment and resource limitations. In WSN, node failure can cause a number of issues, namely Wireless Sensor Networks topology changes, broken communications links, disconnected portions of the network, and data transmission errors. An important concern of WSN is the detecting, diagnosing and recovering of sensor node failures. In the course of this effort, an effective strategy for sensor node failure detection algorithm using the Poisson Hidden Markov Model (PHMM) and the Fuzzy-based Chicken Swarm Optimization (F-CSO) is proposed for efficient detection of sensor node faults in the WSN. The proposed work offers optimal false alarm, false positive, energy consumption, detection accuracy, network lifetime, and least delay rates. Moreover, the F-CSO provides improved localization to locate the defective sensor nodes that are present in the WSN. The proposed work is implemented in the NS2 simulator with realistic simulation parameters, and the simulation results demonstrate that the proposed work is more effective in terms of 89.5% fault detection accuracy, 19.53% throughput, 8.43% energy consumption with minimum delay and less false positive rate when it is compared with other existing state-of-art systems.

Abstract:This paper presents a distributed fault detection algorithm for wireless sensor networks. Faulty sensor nodes are identified based on the similarity test of neighboring nodes and dissemination of the decision made at each node. By making use of temporal and spatial correlations among neighboring sensor nodes jointly, the proposed algorithm can find sensor faults efficiently. We show how this algorithm works well in Castalia simulation environment.

Abstract:Fault detection is vital to wireless sensor networks since node death is a typical fault. One of the central challenges is to design a detection algorithm which has good performance in energy efficiency. In this paper, we propose an intelligent fault detection algorithm based on numerical taxonomy. Firstly, all nodes are divided into clusters according to their geographical distribution. Besides, the sink node uses numerical taxonomy to process the measurements and detect faulty node. Simulation results validate that this algorithm outperforms NDHN and will consume less energy.

Abstract:One of the most challenging problems in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) is detecting and recovering faulty data. Due to resource limitations, WSNs are subject to many failures, including hardware (permanent faults), software, and communication failures. To ensure data reliability, the data collected by WSNs must be clean of faults. This article presents a centralized faulty data detection and recovery approach, which can detect, recover, and recognize different types of faults (offset, gain, stuck-at, out of bound, and random faults). It operates in two phases: Faulty data detection and recovery and fault type identification (FTI). After detecting the fault, the faulty data will be discarded and replaced by an estimated value based on the Kalman filter. FTI provides a unique solution by determining the types of faults and report them to the end-user for an application-specific decision-making process. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is demonstrated through experimental results, with comparison to state-of-the-art techniques of the same application.

Abstract:This study presents a near-domain-based diagnosis algorithm for wireless sensor networks nodes. The whole network is clustered to adapt to dynamic topologies, then self-diagnosis procedure is started simultaneously on all nodes when a new cycle is initiated, or an abnormal behaviour is detected. Matching with neighbour nodes at most twice, the status of a node can be diagnosed. Wireless link fault between nodes is particularly considered in this study which may lead to the erroneous diagnosis of node status. Theoretical analysis and simulation results show that the proposed method has a high accuracy of fault diagnosis and a less communication traffic between nodes, thus greatly reducing energy consumption. At the same time, a high robustness is maintained in this novel fault diagnosis algorithm.

Abstract:In wireless sensor networks, the node faults often occurred in scenes because of severe disturbance, harsh environment and inherent weakness of the networks. In this paper, a fault tolerance directed diffusion protocol, termed fault-tolerant algorithm with recoverable nodes (FTA-RN), is proposed to extend the lifetime of the wireless sensor network based on recoverable host nodes, in which a heartbeat detection algorithm is applied to detect node failure. In FTA-RN, each recoverable intermediate node has a redundant node for fault tolerant function to increase the rate of successful data reception. The nodes are designed based on a kind of recoverable model to prevent the disadvantage of nodes instantaneous fault. Moreover, the energy of host nodes can be used efficiently in recovering model. The simulation result shows that more messages can be received on the sink node using FTA-RN compared with the traditional DD protocol in tolerable amount of delay time and energy consumption, and the lifetime of wireless sensor network in FTA-RN are remarkable longer than traditional DD protocol because of the effect of backup nodes and recoverable host nodes. © 2011.

Abstract:Existing approaches to diagnosing sensor networks are generally sink based, which rely on actively pulling state information from sensor nodes so as to conduct centralized analysis. First, sink-based tools incur huge communication overhead to the traffic-sensitive sensor networks. Second, due to the unreliable wireless communications, sink often obtains incomplete and suspicious information, leading to inaccurate judgments. Even worse, it is always more difficult to obtain state information from problematic or critical regions. To address the given issues, we present a novel self-diagnosis approach, which encourages each single sensor to join the fault decision process. We design a series of fault detectors through which multiple nodes can cooperate with each other in a diagnosis task. Fault detectors encode the diagnosis process to state transitions. Each sensor can participate in the diagnosis by transiting the detector's current state to a new state based on local evidences and then passing the detector to other nodes. Having sufficient evidences, the fault detector achieves the Accept state and outputs a final diagnosis report. We examine the performance of our self-diagnosis tool called TinyD2 on a 100-node indoor testbed and conduct field studies in the GreenOrbs system, which is an operational sensor network with 330 nodes outdoor.
Distributed Fault Detection for Wireless Sensor Networks Based on Support Vector Regression

Abstract:Because the existing approaches for diagnosing sensor networks lead to low precision and high complexity, a new fault detection mechanism based on support vector regression and neighbor coordination is proposed in this work. According to the redundant information about meteorological elements collected by a multisensor, a fault prediction model is built using a support vector regression algorithm, and it achieves residual sequences. Then, the node status is identified by mutual testing among reliable neighbor nodes. Simulations show that when the sensor fault probability in wireless sensor networks is 40%, the detection accuracy of the proposed algorithm is over 87%, and the false alarm ratio is below 7%. The detection accuracy is increased by up to 13%, in contrast to other algorithms. This algorithm not only reduces the communication to sensor nodes but also has a high detection accuracy and a low false alarm ratio. The proposed algorithm is suitable for fault detection in meteorological sensor networks with low node densities and high failure ratios.

Abstract:The significance of wireless sensor network (WSN) applications is to examine dangerous and remote fields that are not reachable or complex or expensive to reach human insights. This feature leads to self-managed networking that may face enormous confronts in energy consumption, fault tolerance and network lifetime based restraints owing certain non-renewable energy resources. From this research, an effectual managing strategy has been provided and methodology to tolerate faults in a network has been anticipated. To model these kinds of framework, fault recognition and revitalization approaches for handling diverse faulty levels have to be considered, i.e. communication and network nodes among them are used. The anticipated management strategy and protocol model may improve network-based fault tolerance ability in network nodes and corresponding transmission among them. As well as, network lifetime is increased for about five times higher than existing methods. Subsequently, it is validated that network fault tolerance proficiency is decreased with 2% and improved network lifetime with 10%. It improves data transmission and reduces energy consumption and increases network lifetime. Simulation is carried out in MATLAB 2018a environment. This model provides the finest results in terms of fault tolerance, network lifetime and energy consumption.

Abstract:Aiming at the problem of fault detection in data collection in wireless sensor networks, this paper combines evolutionary computing and machine learning to propose a productive technical solution. We choose the classical particle swarm optimization (PSO) and improve it, including the introduction of a biological population model to control the population size, and the addition of a parallel mechanism for further tuning. The proposed RS-PPSO algorithm was successfully used to optimize the initial weights and biases of back propagation neural network (BPNN), shortening the training time and raising the prediction accuracy. Wireless sensor networks (WSN) has become the key supporting platform of Internet of Things (IoT). The correctness of the data collected by the sensor nodes has a great influence on the reliability, real-time performance and energy saving of the entire network. The optimized machine learning technology scheme given in this paper can effectively identify the fault data, so as to ensure the effective operation of WSN.

Abstract:Technological developments in wireless sensor networks (WSN) through the use of various networking protocols, it provides enough scope in vast range of applications of the physical world that guarantees for consistency and accuracy of data. With the help of six sigma score and correlation as a parameter, faulty sensor nodes are identified. Using Markov Chain in the network, rank/rating was found from the correlation. From the light of Rating, a statistically efficient algorithm was developed known as Six Sigma z-score. Simulation results show that it is effective in finding faulty nodes giving importance to quality nodes. Experimental results show it outperforms both voting and statistical algorithms test in terms of detection accuracy and false alarm rate.

Abstract:A wireless sensor network (WSN) is used in area monitoring, surveillance, virtual reality, artificial intelligence, etc. The interaction between sensor nodes (SNs) and base station (BS) play a major role in WSN. SNs use more energy to transmit data, and the occurrence of faults in these nodes may lead to complete network failure. To ensure enhanced network performance, the incorporation of an efficient fault detection mechanism becomes essential in WSN. The major aim of the work is to improve the self-healing capacity of the network. To meet the above requirement, a fault-tolerant routing path identification with genetical swarm optimization (FTGSO) is introduced in this work. Genetical swarm optimization (GSO) is the integration of the two optimizations like Genetic Algorithm (GA) and Particle swarm optimization (PSO). The cluster head (CH) selection carried out on the basis of residual energy, coverage, communication cost and proximity. Further, a fault-free routing path is introduced by GSO, and a self-healing method is employed to resolve any network connectivity issues and resume the normal system operation. The analysis and simulation outcomes are compared with other optimization algorithms to verify the effectiveness. The evaluation results verify the enhanced performance of the introduced scheme with a higher PDR (packet delivery ratio) of 96.8%, lower energy consumption of 0.19 J with a minimum packet loss ratio of 3.2% and 30 ms of E2E (end-to-end delay) compared to other existing routing protocols. Also, the performance of the proposed method is compared on the basis of E2E, energy efficiency, (PLR) packet loss ratio and PDR.

Abstract:In order to prevent the overloading, the routing algorithm aids in building productive paths both within and between clusters. When sending information from the source Internet of Things (IoT) device to a Base Station (BS), not all IoT devices are utilized in the path. We introduced an energy aware cluster-based routing in this paper, in which Improved Fuzzy C-means (IFCM) model plays a major role in clustering initially. Meanwhile, the clustering procedure considers the factors like energy and distance. Subsequent to the clustering process, optimal routing will be takes place by a new hybrid optimization algorithm named Custom Honey Badger and Coot Optimization (CHBCO) that combines the models like Honey badger optimization and Coot optimization model, respectively. For routing, the model considers the constraints like Energy as well as link quality. Also, this model establishes the fault tolerance method, which ensures that the network will continue to operate normally even in the situation of a Cluster Head (CH) failure. During this, the cluster members switch to another CH. The performance of proposed CHBCO based routing model is compared over existing models with respect to convergence rate, distance evaluation, energy, alive nodes, distance, normalized energy and link quality under various scenarios.

Abstract:In this paper, given a random uniform distribution of sensor nodes on a 2-D plane, a fast self-organized distributed algorithm is proposed to find the maximum number of partitions of the nodes such that each partition is connected and covers the area to be monitored. Each connected partition remains active in a round robin fashion to cover the query region individually. In case of a node failure, the proposed distributed fault recovery algorithm reconstructs the affected partition locally utilizing the available free nodes. Simulation studies show significant improvement in performance compared to the earlier works in terms of computation time, the diameter of each partition, message overhead and network lifetime.

Abstract:An enhanced optimized layered diagnosis framework (OLDF) is proposed for detecting, diagnosing, and classifying sensor node faults. OLDF utilizes a deep belief network (DBN) with chaos quantum‐behaved particle swarm optimization (CQ‐PSO) for efficient diagnosis and classification of various sensor faults in the network. Summary Node faults are often influenced by factors such as physical component failure, communication module errors, battery exhaustion, and environmental factors. Various researchers have contributed to addressing the problem of detecting, diagnosing, and classifying faults in sensor networks. However, computational complexity and fault occurrence probability increase with the size of the network. In this context, an enhanced optimized layered diagnosis framework (OLDF) is proposed for detecting, diagnosing, and classifying sensor node faults. OLDF utilizes a deep belief network (DBN) with chaos quantum‐behaved particle swarm optimization (CQ‐PSO) for efficient diagnosis and classification of various sensor faults in the network. The proposed OLDF consists of two layers. In the first layer, optimized DBN with CQ‐PSO algorithm is employed to determine the fault type of the sensor nodes. Then, the fault type of sensor nodes that are classified in the first layer is given as input into the second layer of the OLDF algorithm to determine the fault severity in the network. Experimentation has been carried out by using the NS3 simulator for the OLDF framework with performance metrics such as classification accuracy, diagnosis accuracy, false positives, fault alarm rate, and average energy consumption. The validity of the proposed framework has been verified through comparisons with existing works such as MFD, INSA, FDRFC, and HFD. From the comparative analysis carried out, it is apparent that the proposed framework achieves a high classification accuracy of 89.94% and diagnosis accuracy of 93.21%, with less false positive rate, and utilizes minimum energy when compared with its counterparts.
