Weed control approaches for tropical tuber crops - A review

Abstract:In tropical tuber crop production the crop initial slow growth can be outpaced by weeds. Weed control consumes about 30% of total labor input (approximately Rs. 102,000 million). Draught animals used for cultural operations are being phased out. Pre- and post-emergence herbicides, plastic ground cover mulching, and power weeders are alternatives for weed management. Farmers need to understand the on labels, which may require them being taught how to understand labels, when to use pesticides, proper equipment and protective gear to wear, and what to do in the case of contamination of the applicator. There are weed management approaches available in tropical areas where root and tuber crops are grown. Farmers can select either one, or a combination of, weed management practices in an integrated way, based on the ecosystem and socio-economic conditions. The review discusses weed management and their benefits and detriments on controlling weeds and their effects on tropical tuber crops.
