Abstract:Language engagement is defined as “a dynamic, multidimensional construct compromising situated notions of cognition, affect and behaviors including social interactions in which action is a requisite component” (p.3). It is thus a highly complex construct that defines meaningful language learning outcomes, resulting in the growing interest regarding the field of second language acquisition (SLA) over the past two decades (Hiver et al., 2021). As a joint effort of internationally-recognized SLA experts, this edited volume covers language engagement in its all complexity, including measures of its factor structures, related environmental, technological and emotional factors, which provides valuable sources of reference for the scholarship and practice among researchers, instructors and learners alike.

Abstract:Engagement represents the goal most teachers seek when imagining the ideal classroom. When teachers speak of motivating their students, they refer to getting them on task, inducing them to pay attention, helping them complete assignments, and stimulating them towards asking probing questions. All the while, students feel relaxed, energized, joyous in their learning. Numerous theoretical frameworks have been tied to engagement, indicating its importance as a construct beyond any one single paradigm. Some models treat engagement as an outcome, others a dynamic pivot in the motivational process, and reciprocally related to student and teacher interactions. The topic has wide coverage in first language studies, and has been a topic of growing interest in education and educational psychology, but has had only limited adoption as a topic of study in language education. As a construct more easily recognizable to teachers, discussing engagement may help bridge the “black box” world of the classroom, the “impractical” world of educational theory, and the “uninformed” perspective of lay theorists. The current review covers the basic theoretical and methodological issues in measuring and using engagement as a construct for understanding second and foreign language learning in classrooms.

Understanding Student Engagement With A Contextual Model

Abstract:In the present study, student engagement was conceptualized as a metaconstruct with affective, behavioral, and cognitive dimensions. As the indicators in each of the three dimensions were unpacked from facilitators and outcomes, we were able to investigate how student engagement was associated with its antecedents and outcomes in a sample of Chinese junior secondary school students (N=822). The results supported a contextual model for understanding student engagement. They revealed that students were engaged in school when they felt that their teachers adopted motivating instructional practices and they had social-emotional support from their teachers, parents, and peers. Their engagement was high when they had high self-efficacy, endorsed learning goals, and effort attribution. Most importantly, when students were engaged in schools, they experienced positive emotions frequently and their teachers rated them high on academic performance and conduct. The findings have implications for interventions for the enhancement of student engagement in school.

Abstract:At the turn of the new millennium, in an article published in Language Teaching Research in 2000, Dörnyei and Kormos proposed that ‘active learner engagement is a key concern’ for all instructed language learning. Since then, language engagement research has increased exponentially. In this article, we present a systematic review of 20 years of language engagement research. To ensure robust coverage, we searched 21 major journals on second language acquisition (SLA) and applied linguistics and identified 112 reports satisfying our inclusion criteria. The results of our analysis of these reports highlighted the adoption of heterogeneous methods and conceptual frameworks in the language engagement literature, as well as indicating a need to refine the definitions and operationalizations of engagement in both quantitative and qualitative research. Based on these findings, we attempted to clarify some lingering ambiguity around fundamental definitions, and to more clearly delineate the scope and target of language engagement research. We also discuss future avenues to further advance understanding of the nature, mechanisms, and outcomes resulting from engagement in language learning.

Abstract:The objective of the present study was to develop a scale that is appropriate for use internationally to measure affective, behavioral, and cognitive dimensions of student engagement. Psychometric properties of this scale were examined with data of 3,420 students (7th, 8th, and 9th grade) from 12 countries (Austria, Canada, China, Cyprus, Estonia, Greece, Malta, Portugal, Romania, South Korea, the United Kingdom, and the United States). The intraclass correlation of the full-scale scores of student engagement between countries revealed that it was appropriate to aggregate the data from the 12 countries for further analyses. Coefficient alphas revealed good internal consistency. Test-retest reliability coefficients were also acceptable. Confirmatory factor analyses indicated that the data fit well to a second-order model with affective, behavioral, and cognitive engagement as the first-order factors and student engagement as the second-order factor. The results support the use of this scale to measure student engagement as a metaconstruct. Furthermore, the significant correlations of the scale with instructional practices, teacher support, peer support, parent support, emotions, academic performance, and school conduct indicated good concurrent validity of the scale. Considerations and implications regarding the international use of this student engagement in school measure are discussed.

Abstract:Increasing numbers of international students bring their different cultures, languages, and educational backgrounds to higher education, and they expect their experiences and interactions with higher education institutions to be rewarding journeys. A key issue - the dynamic and multifaceted concept of student engagement as an important indicator of the quality of the student experience - has yet to be thoroughly addressed in conceptual discussions and empirical studies with international students, and thus deserves more attention. This paper aims to conceptualise this buzzword, i.e., 'student engagement', in higher education, by embracing the complexity and diversity of international students' experiences to enable a deeper understanding of international students' experiences and needs, and to inform research and practice that considers all stakeholders through questions and suggestions.

Student engagement is considered one of the significant predictors of successful learning. In general, student engagement refers to the active participation in a series of academic and co-curricular or school-related activities and commitment to pursuing learning goals. Does student engagement associated with successful learning occur in any settings, offline or online programs? This paper presents some theoretical frameworks about student engagement. This paper concludes with some pedagogical implications for English language teaching techniques.

Abstract:The student experience and engagement field is a rare mix of scholars and research on both the psychological theories that enhance student engagement and the everyday institutional and school policies that promote student engagement. It is an undeniably popular field, with practitioners, experts, university and school leaders, policymakers, and students all hoping to understand what they can do to foster engagement practices. This article provides a wide breadth of the historical and current research that has shaped student engagement today. First, it includes general overviews, books, and journals that contribute basic dimensions and theories for understanding the evolution of student engagement. Next is an examination of student engagement assessment practices and multiple perspectives on the ongoing discourse of how researchers and scholars should evaluate student engagement. Following are five key areas for improving student engagement: institutional efforts, the role of teachers, student self-efficacy and self-motivation, pedagogy developments, and finally, the impact of technology on the field of student engagement. Also discussed are the outcomes of student engagement, with sections devoted to academic outcomes, emotional and behavioral outcomes, and the relationship between student engagement and extracurricular activities. Student engagement through the perspectives of those outside the majority—minority students and international students—is then examined. The final section covers the best practices discovered so far within student engagement. An active attempt was made to include scholars from the international community. Although this article focuses on higher education, research on primary and secondary education is also referenced. A rich theoretical literature exists; however, student engagement is invariably an applied phenomenon, and many key studies are policy oriented.

Abstract:RELC Journal, Ahead of Print. Although a surfeit of research has investigated the technicality and efficacy of feedback, much less attention has been directed towards student engagement with written feedback. In second-language writing scholarship, student engagement is considered the linchpin that connects feedback provision with learning outcomes and is crucial for feedback to be effective. This article aims to provide a critical review of empirical research on student engagement with written feedback on second-language writing, as well as suggestions for future studies and classroom practice. Utilizing systematic and explicit methods to identify, select and critically appraise relevant research, the article provides a synthesis of research findings concerning: (a) the ways second-language students engage with written feedback; (b) factors that influence student engagement with written feedback; and (c) impact of pedagogical activities on student engagement with written feedback. Based on the reviewed evidence, this study also outlines several areas for future research and provides pedagogical recommendations for second-language teachers. By synthesizing empirical findings on student engagement with written feedback and distilling their implications, the article advances existing knowledge on this under-researched yet important topic and suggests implications that could inform new avenues of research and pedagogical practice.

Abstract:The chapter investigated students' behavioral, emotional, and cognitive engagement, as well as their learning in a blended environment. A convergent mixed methods research design was used in which quantitative data (face-to-face attendance, online system login, and survey) were collected from 71 undergraduate students, and qualitative data (focus group interview) were collected from six of these students. These data were further analyzed and integrated. The quantitative results showed that students' online login, the behavioral engagement indicator, had a positive impact on their learning, which was supported by qualitative findings. Further analysis revealed the mixture of students' engagement, such as confusion vs. interesting feelings to online discussions and frustration vs. not much effort using the online system.

Abstract:Language Teaching Research, Ahead of Print. Collaborative writing is a pedagogical activity increasingly used in second language education. Despite the increased research on L2 students' participation in collaborative writing, scant attention has been paid to student engagement in project-based collaborative writing and the possible engagement changes. This article reports on a longitudinal case study investigating the changes in student engagement of a group of five Chinese EFL undergraduates in project-based collaborative writing. The analysis of the data gathered by observations of group interactions, interviews, and student texts reveals three patterns of engagement changes: from active collaborators to 'team escapers', from a supporter to a 'free rider', and unchanged dedicated writers. The findings are discussed concerning the factors that could account for the engagement changes, including students' language proficiency and learning needs as the individual factors and activity type as the contextual factor.

Abstract:Flipped classrooms have attracted widespread attention and interest from English for foreign language (EFL) practitioners and researchers and are regarded as a promising pedagogical approach to increase learning outcomes and facilitate learner engagement. This article takes stock of the publications on learner engagement in flipped EFL classrooms. In so doing, we aim to clarify the engagement construct specific to the EFL classroom setting, summarize the effect that flipped classrooms have on EFL learners’ engagement, and identify factors affecting engagement. We find that there has been a range of debates and tensions regarding flipped classrooms and learner engagement in EFL settings, and that more theory-grounded empirical studies are needed to delineate learner engagement in localized flipped learning and teaching contexts. We would argue that in future research, multiple variables, including learner dynamics and social-psychological factors, should be considered while flipping the EFL course so that practitioners can provide tailor-made support to improve learners’ engagement levels.

Abstract:Language Teaching Research, Ahead of Print. In this study, we investigated two core understandings related to the nature of second language (L2) student engagement from a self-determination theory framework: (1) that there is a dual process of development that follows from the initial conditions of the L2 classroom environment (specifically teacher motivational practice: autonomy-supportive vs. controlling), which leads to two distinct motivational experiences (need satisfaction vs. need frustration), which in turn results in qualitatively different types of student classroom functioning (engagement vs. disengagement); and (2) that there are reciprocal effects between the L2 classroom environment and student classroom functioning. We collected data from 1,742 students enrolled in general-purpose postsecondary English courses in mainland China at three waves in a 17-week semester, and tested a longitudinal dual-process, reciprocal-effects model. Our analyses showed that student perceptions of teacher motivational practice at the beginning of the semester predicted psychological need satisfaction at later time points. Psychological need satisfaction in turn predicted later classroom engagement. Student engagement also had feedback effects and predicted subsequent perceptions of teacher motivational practice. We discuss the implications of these results for L2 learning and teaching and consider ways that future research might build on our design and extend these findings.

Abstract:A principle-based concept analysis of student engagement was used to examine the state of the science across disciplines. Four major perspectives of philosophy of science guided analysis and provided a framework for study of interrelationships and integration of conceptual components which then resulted in formulation of a theoretical definition. Findings revealed student engagement as a dynamic reiterative process marked by positive behavioral, cognitive, and affective elements exhibited in pursuit of deep learning. This process is influenced by a broader sociocultural environment bound by contextual preconditions of self-investment, motivation, and a valuing of learning. Outcomes of student engagement include satisfaction, sense of well-being, and personal development. Findings of this analysis prove relevant to nursing education as faculty transition from traditional teaching paradigms, incorporate learner-centered strategies, and adopt innovative pedagogical methodologies. It lends support for curricula reform, development of more accurate evaluative measures, and creation of meaningful teaching-learning environments within the discipline.

This book has presented a suite of theoretical and empirical contributions, including national and institutional case studies, with the overarching objective of taking stock of major contemporary contributions and reaching closer to distilling a useful aggregation of aligned research and policy initiatives. This final chapter recaps key messages from each of the chapters and synthesises these into future steps for the field of student engagement research and its broader position within and contribution to higher education. It articulates nine forward-looking indicators of education engagement.

Abstract:As global higher education lacks robust and reliable information on student learning, evidence from a large international collaboration on student engagement has an important role to play. This introductory chapter reveals the research agenda and rationales, states the topic, the research foundations and surveys’ surrounding assumptions, and introduces the global contributions which follow. We assert that globally aligned surveys of student engagement provide useful insights into what students are actually doing, an empirically grounded framework for meaningful conversations about excellence, and a stimulus for guiding new thinking about good practice.

Abstract:Notwithstanding its crucial role in facilitating desired outcomes of schooling, educational psychology researchers have recognized the conceptual haziness of student engagement as a multidimensional construct. With the main purpose of refining its conceptual definition, this paper aims to attain the following four goals. First, we seek to highlight theoretical, conceptual, and operational concerns about the student engagement construct, and synthesize these concerns into four related areas: overgeneralization, jingle-jangle fallacies, object ambiguity, and under-theorization. Second, we conduct a comprehensive review of prevailing perspectives on student engagement and critically examine their strengths and limitations. Building upon such extant models, third, we offer the Dual Component Framework of Student Engagement, which differentiates learning engagement from school engagement, and articulates the conceptual definition and scope, as well as the objects and dimensions, of the two engagement constructs. Lastly, we underscore the theoretical, research, and applied implications of the proposed framework in advancing the field of student engagement.

Abstract:Engagement is one of the hottest research topics in the field of educational psychology. Research shows that multifarious benefits occur when students are engaged in their own learning, including increased motivation and achievement. However, there is little agreement on a concrete definition and effective measurement of engagement. This special issue serves to discuss and work toward addressing conceptual and instrumentation issues related to engagement, with particular interest in engagement in the domain of science learning. We start by describing the dimensional perspective of engagement (behavioral, cognitive, emotional, agentic) and suggest a complementary approach that places engagement instrumentation on a continuum. Specifically, we recommend that instrumentation be considered on a “grain-size” continuum that ranges from a person-centered to a context-centered orientation to clarify measurement issues. We then provide a synopsis of the articles included in this special issue and conclude with suggestions for future research.

Abstract:While student engagement is central to connecting feedback provision with learning outcomes and has significant value for unlocking the learning potential of feedback, the extant research on student engagement with written feedback is not only scant but also under-theorized. This article explores the potential of sociocultural theory (SCT) for theorizing the notion of L2 student engagement with written feedback and furthering research on the topic. Using a number of concepts in SCT, we attempt to theorize this construct and propose an integrative sociocultural framework that draws particular attention to the nature of engagement (i.e., core characteristics of engagement) and its underlying mechanisms (i.e., mediating factors in engagement). We then outline two research areas that are key to broadening current scholarship and examine methodological issues in research on L2 student engagement with written feedback. The article contributes to broadening the knowledge base of this burgeoning research area and stimulating further work on it.
