Abstract:The most generalized reproductive mode in anurans is the deposition of egg clutches in water that develop into exotrophic aquatic tadpoles. Yet, despite this extended distribution, cases of parental care on submerged egg clutches are poorly documented. Because of its high diversity, its aquatic habits, and reports on males of two species standing next to the clutch, the Andean genus Telmatobius Wiegmann, 1834 offers an excellent model to examine the evolution of such behavior and the factors influencing it. Here, we combine field and laboratory studies to describe the breeding biology and parental care behavior on Telmatobius culeus (Garman, 1876), Telmatobius hintoni Parker, 1940, Telmatobius intermedius Vellard, 1951, Telmatobius jelskii (Peters, 1873), and Telmatobius oxycephalus Vellard, 1946. Our findings indicate that these five species have prolonged breeding season, and use concealed underwater shelters between rocks or macrophytes for mating and egg deposition. We showed that clutches of 35–560 eggs are deposited in these shelters. Males were observed next to the egg clutch and defending it aggressively against intruders, including conspecifics. Females were, on average, larger than males supporting the hypothesis that competition among males does not drive sexual size dimorphism in the genus. Our findings provide meaningful data to use in conservation programs, given that most species of Telmatobius are considered endangered and fill a significant information gap in understanding parental care’s origin in Nobleobatrachia.

Abstract:Clownfish parents provide extensive nocturnal care to their offspring throughout embryo development and during hatching. At night, both parents performed elevated levels of care compared with the daytime and engaged in three new behaviors not previously observed in this species during the day: anemone biting, vigorous fanning, and vigorous mouthing. These novel behaviors were especially prevalent during embryo hatching and may play a key role in facilitating hatching and early larval survival. Parental care is a critical component of many breeding systems that enhances both parent and offspring fitness. It is widely recognized that parental care varies in quality and quantity in response to variation in offspring need, parental condition, and ecological context. One context that has been underexplored, however, is the presence of extensive parental care at night, with many parental care studies focused on diurnal care. To fully understand the evolution of parental care, both diurnal and nocturnal care must be accounted for. Here, we show that nocturnal parental care exists in the clownfish Amphiprion percula, with males and females actively caring for offspring at night throughout embryo development and during hatching within a laboratory setting. At night, as during the day, males continue to be the dominant caregiver and both parents increase care as embryos mature. However, females provide substantially more care at night than during the day. We also document three new parental care behaviors at night that are not seen during the day: vigorous fanning, vigorous mouthing, and anemone biting. These behaviors are particularly frequent during hatching, and they may serve to assist the hatching process by helping embryos transition from the benthic to the pelagic environment. This study contributes to our understanding of parental care, demonstrating the importance of considering nocturnal care if we are to gain a complete understanding of the evolution of parental care.
