Abstract:Polymers and Polymer Composites, Volume 30, Issue , January-December 2022. Modern electronic devices need effective shielding from external Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) to function correctly. The Electromagnetic (EM) waves emerging from communication systems and medical devices must be isolated to safeguard humans from exposure. The mechanics of EMI shielding as well as several characterization methods are discussed in this paper. Existing trends and practices of designing, fabrication and use of polymer matrix composites for EMI shielding applications are covered. Several approaches and new solutions for fabricating composites either by modification of filler or matrix are discussed and prominent features of EMI shielding material are also discussed. Conducting polymers such as polyaniline, polypyrrole and polythiophene make them adept for EMI shielding applications. An assessment of the different factors affecting the performance of EMI shielding materials is also presented.

Abstract:The extensive development of electronic systems and telecommunications has lead to major concerns regarding electromagnetic pollution. Motivated by environmental questions and by a wide variety of applications, the quest for materials with high efficiency to mitigate electromagnetic interferences (EMI) pollution has become a mainstream field of research. This paper reviews the state-of-the-art research in the design and characterization of polymer/carbon based composites as EMI shielding materials. After a brief introduction, in Section 1, the electromagnetic theory will be briefly discussed in Section 2 setting the foundations of the strategies to be employed to design efficient EMI shielding materials. These materials will be classified in the next section by the type of carbon fillers, involving carbon black, carbon fiber, carbon nanotubes and graphene. The importance of the dispersion method into the polymer matrix (melt-blending, solution processing, etc.) on the final material properties will be discussed. The combination of carbon fillers with other constituents such as metallic nanoparticles or conductive polymers will be the topic of Section 4. The final section will address advanced complex architectures that are currently studied to improve the performances of EMI materials and, in some cases, to impart additional properties such as thermal management and mechanical resistance. In all these studies, we will discuss the efficiency of the composites/devices to absorb and/or reflect the EMI radiation.

Abstract:The rapid proliferation and extensive use of electronic devices have resulted in a meteoric increase in electromagnetic interference (EMI), which causes electronic devices to malfunction. The quest for the best shielding material to overcome EMI is boundless. This pursuit has taken different directions, right from materials to structures to process up to the concept of sustainable materials. The emergence of polymer composites has substituted the metal and metal alloy-based EMI shielding materials due to their unique features such as lightweight, excellent corrosion resistance, superior electrical, dielectric, thermal, mechanical, and magnetic properties that are beneficial for suppressing the EMI. Therefore, polymer nanocomposites are an extensively explored EMI shielding materials strategy. This review focuses on recent research developments with major emphasis on structural aspects and processing in enhancing the EMI shielding effectiveness of polymer nanocomposites with their underlying mechanisms and some glimpses on the sustainability approaches taken in this field is deeply reviewed.

Abstract:The rapid advancement of electronic communication technology has greatly aided human productivity and quality of life, but it has also resulted in significant electromagnetic pollution issues. Traditional metals and alloys are often used for electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding due to their excellent electrical conductivity. However, they have drawbacks such as being heavy, expensive, and having low corrosion resistance, which limits their application in electromagnetic shielding. Therefore, it is crucial to develop novel EMI shielding materials. Polymers, being highly flexible, corrosion-resistant, and possessing high specific strength, are frequently employed in electromagnetic shielding materials. In this review, we firstly introduce the basic theory of electromagnetic shielding. Then, we outline the processing methods and recent developments of polymer-based electromagnetic shielding composites, including uniform-, foam-, layered-, and segregated structures. Lastly, we present the challenges and prospects for the field, aiming to provide direction and inspiration for the study of polymer-based electromagnetic shielding composite materials.

Abstract:The rapid development of modern electronic technology has provided high efficiency for social production, but it also brings serious electromagnetic interference (EMI). Although traditional metals and their alloys can serve as good electromagnetic shielding materials, their heavy weight, high cost as well as poor corrosion resistance limit their application in EMI shielding. Therefore, electromagnetic shielding materials with lightweight are gradually attracting more and more attention to meet the trend of lightweight and highly integrated electronic equipment. Polymers are widely used in EMI shielding materials because of their unique characteristics, such as lightweight, high flexibility and excellent corrosion resistance. This review is focused on the well-studied polymer-based lightweight composites, with the aim of providing a comprehensive review of the existing EMI shielding mechanism, preparation and application of polymer-based lightweight composites, along with retrieving new general insights into the advantages and limitations associated with the different measurement and prediction techniques, as well as the EMI shielding effectiveness of polymer-based lightweight composites including metal-containing composites, intrinsic conductive polymers, filler-containing polymers and newly discovered materials. These lightweight materials with fine EMI shielding performance will find more and more potential applications in communications, electronics, aerospace, military, environmental protection, etc.Graphical abstract

Abstract:Electromagnetic shielding materials are special materials that can effectively absorb and shield electromagnetic waves and protect electronic devices and electronic circuits from interference and damage by electromagnetic radiation. This paper presents the research progress of intrinsically conductive polymer materials and conductive polymer-based composites for electromagnetic shielding as well as an introduction to lightweight polymer composites with multicomponent systems. These materials have excellent electromagnetic interference shielding properties and have the advantages of electromagnetic wave absorption and higher electromagnetic shielding effectiveness compared with conventional electromagnetic shielding materials, but these materials still have their own shortcomings. Finally, the paper also discusses the future opportunities and challenges of intrinsically conductive polymers and composites containing a conductive polymer matrix for electromagnetic shielding applications.

Abstract:Abstract With the widespread application of electronic communication technology, the resulting electromagnetic radiation pollution has been significantly increased. Metal matrix electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials have disadvantages such as high density, easy corrosion, difficult processing and high price, etc. Polymer matrix EMI shielding composites possess light weight, corrosion resistance and easy processing. However, the current polymer matrix composites present relatively low electrical conductivity and poor EMI shielding performance. This review firstly discusses the key concept, loss mechanism and test method of EMI shielding. Abstract:This paper presents a comprehensive literature survey on hybrid polymer composite material research for electromagnetic shielding applications. It focuses on electromagnetic (EM) radiation, mechanism of electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding and suitability of polymer composites for the EMI shielding applications. Based on the recent literature, it summarizes and discusses the fabrication, characterization, and results of polymer hybrid composites. Particulate reinforced bulk polymer composites, polymer-based microfilms, multi-layered polymer-based film composites, hybrid fabric reinforced composites, and foam based polymer composite for EMI shielding applications are discussed. In addition, an attempt is made to summarize the salient features and the challenges in hybrid polymer material design and development for EMI shielding applications.

Abstract:The urge to develop high-speed data transfer technologies for futuristic electronic and communication devices has led to more incidents of serious electromagnetic interference and pollution. Over the past decade, there has been burgeoning research interests to design and fabricate high-performance porous EM shields to tackle this undesired phenomenon. Polymer nanocomposite foams and aerogels offer robust, flexible and lightweight architectures with tunable microwave absorption properties and are foreseen as potential candidates to mitigate electromagnetic pollution. This review covers various strategies adopted to fabricate 3D porous nanocomposites using conductive nanoinclusions with suitable polymer matrices, such as elastomers, thermoplastics, bioplastics, conducting polymers, polyurethanes, polyimides and nanocellulose. Special emphasis has been placed on novel 2D materials such as MXenes, that are envisaged to be the future of microwave-absorbing materials for next-generation electronic devices. Strategies to achieve an ultra-low percolation threshold using environmentally benign and facile processing techniques have been discussed in detail.

Abstract:The development of sophisticated telecommunication equipment and other electro-electronic devices resulted in a kind of electromagnetic pollution that affects the performance of other equipment as well as the health of human beings. Intrinsically conducting polymers (ICP), mainly polyaniline and polypyrrole, have been considered as promising candidates for applications in efficient electromagnetic interference shielding (EMI) due to their ease of preparation, light weight, good conductivity and corrosion resistance. One of the important advantages of these materials is the capability to interact with the EM radiation through both absorption and reflection mechanisms thus enlarging the field of application. In this context, this review article describes a recent overview of the existing methods to produce intrinsically conducting polymers and their blends for electromagnetic shielding application. Additionally, it highlights the relationship between preparation methods reported in the literature with the structure and properties, such as electrical conductivity, electromagnetic shielding effectiveness (EMI SE), complex permittivity and permeability of these materials. Furthermore, a brief theory related to the electromagnetic mechanism and techniques for measuring the microwave absorbing properties are also discussed.

Abstract:Carbon-based nanoparticles have recently generated a great attention, as they could create polymer nanocomposites with enhanced transport properties, overcoming some limitations of electrically-conductive polymers for high demanding sectors. Particular importance has been given to the protection of electronic components from electromagnetic radiation emitted by other devices. This review considers the recent advances in carbon-based polymer nanocomposites for electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding. After a revision of the types of carbon-based nanoparticles and respective polymer nanocomposites and preparation methods, the review considers the theoretical models for predicting the EMI shielding, divided in those based on electrical conductivity, models based on the EMI shielding efficiency, on the so-called parallel resistor-capacitor model and those based on multiscale hybrids. Recent advances in the EMI shielding of carbon-based polymer nanocomposites are presented and related to structure and processing, focusing on the effects of nanoparticle’s aspect ratio and possible functionalization, dispersion and alignment during processing, as well as the use of nanohybrids and 3D reinforcements. Examples of these effects are presented for nanocomposites with carbon nanotubes/nanofibres and graphene-based materials. A final section is dedicated to cellular nanocomposites, focusing on how the resulting morphology and cellular structures may generate lightweight multifunctional nanocomposites with enhanced absorption-based EMI shielding properties.

Abstract:The present work reviews the recent study about multicomponent conductive polymer composites (CPCs) applied in the field of electromagnetic wave interference (EMI) shielding. The rheological properties of the multicomponent systems, the numerical modeling of EMI shielding, and the special structure design of CPCs are highlighted and discussed. The colossal development of modern electronic devices has inevitably led to an increase in electromagnetic interference (EMI), which has gradually become the fourth most prevalent type of pollution in the world. It is therefore necessary to seek more effective EMI‐shielding materials to overcome the shortcomings of conventional metal‐based materials, which include high density, a lack of mechanical flexibility, low corrosion resistance and costly processing. Conductive polymer composites (CPCs) have attracted more and more attention due to their superiority in many aspects. However, their performances should be further enhanced for future applications. One polymer with only one type of filler often cannot meet this kind of requirement. In this paper, filled polymer materials for EMI shielding are reviewed in terms of their processing, rheological properties, conductivity, and shielding effectiveness. Moreover, the combination of different ingredients and fillers when fabricating multicomponent composites for EMI shielding is also highlighted. The coordination of various components in composites with different structures, including solid, segregated, layered/sandwiched, and foamed/porous structures, is then discussed.

Abstract:We present systematic studies of the electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding and microwave properties of a new class of shielding material, i.e., the ferromagnetic microwires-embedded polymer composites. We show that at 1-2 GHz the shielding effectiveness (SE) of the continuous-wire composite reaches a high value of 18 dB (98.4% attenuation) for a very low filler loading of 0.024% and a thickness of 0.64 mm. The normalized SE of this new composite is about 70 times higher than that of the bucky paper-based composite and is two to four orders of magnitude higher than those of other shielding candidate materials. Complex permeability, permittivity, and impedance experiments reveal that the absorption of electromagnetic radiation is a dominant mechanism for EMI shielding of the studied composites. The advantages of high shielding efficiency, good physical integrity, low fabrication costs, and multifunctionalities make them an attractive candidate material for a variety of technological applications. Abstract:Miniaturization of electronic devices and systems enhances the complexity of inbuilt circuitry, thereby giving rise to electromagnetic interference (EMI). EMI is a serious cause of concern as it affects the performance of a device, transmission channel, or system. In a quest to find an effective solution to this problem, several materials, apart from the conventional metals, such as carbon derivatives, have been extensively explored recently. In addition to carbon derivatives, hybrid structures such as core-shell, conjugated systems, etc. have also been researched. However, semiconducting fillers have received less attention, especially in this application. Hence, this review article will primarily focus on the systematic understanding of the use of semiconductor-based polymer nanocomposites and how the band gap plays a crucial role in deciding the dielectric properties and subsequently the electromagnetic absorption behavior for shielding applications. Our primary aim is to highlight the mechanism of shielding involved in such nanocomposites in addition to discussing the synthesis and properties that lead to effective shielding. Such nanocomposites containing semiconductors can pave the way for alternate materials for EMI shielding applications that are lightweight, flexible, and easy to integrate.

Abstract:Abstract The rapid development of aerospace weapons and equipment, wireless base stations and 5G communication technologies has put forward newer and higher requirements for the comprehensive performances of polymer-based electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding composites. However, most of currently prepared polymer-based EMI shielding composites are still difficult to combine high performance and multi-functionality. In response to this, based on the research works of relevant researchers as well as our research group, three possible directions to break through the above bottlenecks are proposed, including construction of efficient conductive networks, optimization of multi-interfaces for lightweight and multifunction compatibility design. The future development trends in three directions are prospected, and it is hoped to provide certain theoretical basis and technical guidance for the preparation, research and development of polymer-based EMI shielding composites.

Abstract:High-frequency electromagnetic waves and electronic products can bring great convenience to people's life, but lead to a series of electromagnetic interference (EMI) problems, such as great potential dangers to the normal operation of electronic components and human safety. Therefore, the research of EMI shielding materials has attracted extensive attention by the scholars. Among them, polymer-based EMI shielding materials with light weight, high specific strength, and stable properties have become the current mainstream. The construction of 3D conductive networks has proved to be an effective method for the preparation of polymer-based EMI shielding materials with excellent shielding effectiveness (SE). In this paper, the shielding mechanism of polymer-based EMI shielding materials with 3D conductive networks is briefly introduced, with emphasis on the preparation methods and latest research progress of polymer-based EMI shielding materials with different 3D conductive networks. The key scientific and technical problems to be solved in the field of polymer-based EMI shielding materials are also put forward. Finally, the development trend and application prospects of polymer-based EMI shielding materials are prospected.
Recent Trends in Polymeric Foams and Porous Structures for Electromagnetic Interference Shielding Applications

Abstract:Polymer-based (nano)composite foams containing conductive (nano)fillers limit electromagnetic interference (EMI) pollution, and have been shown to act as good shielding materials in electronic devices. However, due to their high (micro)structural complexity, there is still a great deal to learn about the shielding mechanisms in these materials; understanding this is necessary to study the relationship between the properties of the microstructure and the porous structure, especially their EMI shielding efficiency (EMI SE). Targeting and controlling the electrical conductivity through a controlled distribution of conductive nanofillers are two of the main objectives when combining foaming with the addition of nanofillers; to achieve this, both single or combined nanofillers (nanohybrids) are used (as there is a direct relationship between electrical conductivity and EMI SE), as are the main shielding mechanisms working on the foams (which are expected to be absorption-dominated). The present review considers the most significant developments over the last three years concerning polymer-based foams containing conductive nanofillers, especially carbon-based nanofillers, as well as other porous structures created using new technologies such as 3D printing for EMI shielding applications. It starts by detailing the microcellular foaming strategy, which develops polymer foams with enhanced EMI shielding, and it particularly focuses on technologies using supercritical CO2 (sCO2). It also notes the use of polymer foams as templates to prepare carbon foams with high EMI shielding performances for high temperature applications, as well as a recent strategy which combines different functional (nano)fillers to create nanohybrids. This review also explains the control and selective distribution of the nanofillers, which favor an effective conductive network formation, which thus promotes the enhancement of the EMI SE. The recent use of computational approaches to tailor the EMI shielding properties are given, as are new possibilities for creating components with varied porous structures using the abovementioned materials and 3D printing. Finally, future perspectives are discussed.

Abstract:Lightweight materials, such as polymers and composites, are increasingly used in the automotive and aerospace industries. Recently, there has been an increase in the use of these materials, especially in electric vehicles. However, these materials cannot shield sensitive electronics from electromagnetic interference (EMI). The current work investigates the EMI performance of these lightweight materials using an experimental setup based on the ASTM D4935-99 standard and EMI simulation using the ANSYS HFSS. This work studies how metal coating from zinc and aluminum bronze can improve the shielding performance of polymer-based materials, such as polyphenylene sulfide (PPS), polyetheretherketone (PEEK), and polyphthalamide (PPA). Based on the findings of this study, a thin coating (50 μm) of Zn on the surface of PPS and a thin coating of 5 μm and 10 μm of Al-Bronze, respectively, on the surface of PEEK and PPA have indicated an increase in the shielding effectiveness (SE) when subjected to EMI. The shielding effectiveness significantly increased from 7 dB for the uncoated polymer to approximately 40 dB at low frequencies and up to approximately 60 dB at high frequencies for coated polymers. Finally, various approaches are recommended for improving the SE of polymeric materials under the influence of EMI.
Shielding effectiveness of plastic materials for 5G applications

Abstract:The study and modelling of EMC are becoming more critical than ever due to the ubiquitous presence of electronic circuits in all aspects of our lives. Specifically, it is crucial to extend these studies to the new frequencies that, in a few years, will be a reality in modern telecommunications systems, such as 5G and its derived technologies. A specific critical field where the proper EMI shielding has been ensured to avoid EMC problems is the electric autonomous vehicles (EAVs). The huge number of electronics systems in new vehicles will dramatically extend the demands on the EMI shielding solutions used to attenuate the radiated emissions that could affect circuits in the vehicle. Metals or metal alloys are the most common EMI shielding materials since they demonstrate adequate shielding capacity against EMI. However, polymers have become up-and-coming materials for EMI shielding with the characteristics of lightweight, flexibility, cost-effective, easy processing, and resistance to corrosion. Consequently, it is necessary to develop EMI shielding materials based on polymers, plastic materials, and fiber composites that ensure compliance with the different standards that regulate 5G and the proper operation of possible systems susceptible to the intentional and unintended signals generated by this new technology. This contribution focuses on characterizing different composite structures performance based on fibers combined with conductive materials in terms of shielding effectiveness, covering the 5G sub-6 GHz frequency range.
