Abstract:In recent years, concerns about the harmful effects of synthetic UV filters on the environment have highlighted the need for natural sun blockers. Lignin, the most abundant aromatic renewable biopolymer on Earth, is a promising candidate for next-generation sunscreen due to its inherent UV absorbance and its green, biodegradable, and biocompatible properties. Lignin's limitations, such as its dark color and poor dispersity, can be overcome by reducing particle size to the nanoscale, enhancing UV protection and formulation. In this study, 100–200 nm lignin nanoparticles (LNPs) were prepared from various biomass by-products (hardwood, softwood, and herbaceous material) using an eco-friendly anti-solvent precipitation method. Pure lignin macroparticles (LMPs) were extracted from beech, spruce, and wheat straw using an ethanol–organosolv treatment and compared with sulfur-rich kraft lignin (KL). Sunscreen lotions made from these LMPs and LNPs at various concentrations demonstrated novel UV-shielding properties based on biomass source and particle size. The results showed that transitioning from the macro- to nanoscale increased the sun protection factor (SPF) by at least 2.5 times, with the best results improving the SPF from 7.5 to 42 for wheat straw LMPs and LNPs at 5 wt%. This study underscores lignin's potential in developing high-quality green sunscreens, aligning with green chemistry principles.

Abstract:To meet the growing demand for modern new green ultraviolet (UV) protection materials, it is essential to design and develop natural biomass-based UV protection materials. As one of the naturally abundant renewable polymers, lignin is an electron-rich polyaromatic metamorphic organic compound with extremely strong bioactivity. In recent years, lignin-based anti-UV functional materials have attracted extensive attention due to their varying degrees of methoxy-rich aromatic structure, high UV absorption capacity, and antioxidant properties, which have been widely studied and applied. Given the rapid development and significant progress of lignin-based anti-UV functional materials, a comprehensive and rigorous review and outlook of lignin-based anti-UV functional materials is presented here. This review aims to highlight the construction methods and development strategies of lignin in anti-UV functional materials and the current understanding of its anti-UV mechanisms, it discusses the development potential and application trends of lignin in anti-UV aging additives, sunscreen products, anti-UV dyes, anti-UV adhesives, and light stabilizer materials, etc., and it also provides insight into the future development of high-performance, biocompatible and biodegradable lignin-based anti-UV functional materials. Investigations and breakthroughs in lignin-based anti-UV materials will be invaluable to the efficient utilization of lignin in other fields.

Abstract:Because phenolic compounds in the structure of lignin function as free radical scavengers and UV blockers, lignin offers potential capabilities, particularly in terms of antioxidant and antibacterial properties. These qualities have led to its use as a natural sunscreen, anti-inflammatory, whitening agent, and anti-aging ingredient in cosmetic formulations. Furthermore, because of lignin's low cytotoxicity, lignin-based cosmetics can help to improve user safety to some level. In certain investigations, lignin was added to commercial sunscreen in varying concentrations, and a synergistic effect was achieved when paired with an existing inorganic ingredient. Differences in lignin absorptivity as a lignin-based sunscreen result from different sources and methods of lignin extraction processing, leading to the discovery of the most effective lignin structure as a sunscreen. Furthermore, the potential anti-inflammatory, wound treatment, tyrosinase inhibitory, and anti-aging activities of lignin have been reported to have potential as a new generation of bio-based cosmetic products. This review helps to understand better how to develop lignin as a natural cosmetic, including sunscreen, anti-inflammatory, whitening, and anti-aging agents, along with its mechanisms for environmental purposes.

Abstract:Green, biocompatible, and biodegradable antioxidants represent a milestone in cosmetic and cosmeceutical applications. Lignin is the most abundant polyphenol in nature, recovered as a low-cost waste from the pulp and paper industry and biorefinery. This polymer is characterized by beneficial physical and chemical properties which are improved at the nanoscale level due to the emergence of antioxidant and UV shielding activities. Here we review the use of lignin nanoparticles in cosmetic and cosmeceutical applications, focusing on sunscreen and antiaging formulations. Advances in the technology for the preparation of lignin nanoparticles are described highlighting structure activity relationships.

Abstract:Smart sunscreen actives are successfully constructed via covalently introducing active spirapyrane into natural macromolecular lignin, endowing it with broad‐spectrum UV‐absorption, sensitive photochromism, and absorbance‐enhancement properties. SPF value of the developed botanical sunscreen improves from 23 to 89 under 4 h UV irradiation and can maintain at least 8 h. Lignin exhibits a long‐active UV‐blocking property due to its macromolecular aromatic structure and unique semiquione‐quione‐hydroquione transition. However, its poor absorbance in UVA region (320–400 nm) and irregular aggregation are still the obstacles. Herein, active spirapyrane (SP‐Br) is synthesized and covalently introduced into alkali lignin (AL) to construct photo‐stimulated UV‐absorbing enhancement sunscreen actives (AL‐SPn). The introduction of SP significantly improved the absorbance of AL in UVA region and its aggregation is effectively eased. When the optimal AL‐SP3 solution is exposed to UV irradiation, the color turned purple, and the absorbance in UVA region further improved as the unconjugated SP transformed into conjugated merocyanine (MC) structure. When the light is removed, the solution recovered light yellow. The antioxidant property of AL endow the reversible SP‐MC transformation with good cyclic stability. As‐prepared AL‐SP3 based sunscreen exhibit obvious photo‐stimulated enhancement effect. The sun protection factor (SPF) improved from 23 to 89 after 4 h irradiation, and can maintain the high performance for another 8 h. In addition, it exhibit low permeation and good biocompatibily in vitro and vivo, demonstrating its good potential in practical use.

Abstract:The active ingredients most commonly employed in sunscreens are compounds containing one or two aromatic rings. Lignin is the most abundant renewable aromatic polymer that has the potential to yield low molecular weight aromatic chemicals when strategically depolymerized. Here, the UV absorbance of a series of monomeric and dimeric lignin model compounds (LMCs) were studied. Specifically, vanillin and ferulic acid demonstrated good absorption in the UVB (280-320 nm) range, while the 5-5 dimer showed efficient absorption in the UVA (320-400 nm) range. Based on this, vanillin, ferulic acid and 5-5 dimer were mixed in pairs and dispersed in the oily isoeugenol to prepare LMC hybrid dispersions. Subsequently, demethylated lignin (DL) was synthesized and used to encapsulate the LMC hybrid dispersions via ultrasonic cavitation to prepare DL-based nano-capsules (DLNCs). The DLNCs were used as the only active ingredient in sunscreens, whose sun protection factor (SPF) value could be up to 55 with a dosage of 10 wt%. Due to anti-photolysis property of DL, the SPF value of DLNCs-based sunscreens increased initially and maintained >8 h under UV irradiation. Additionally, the prepared DLNCs exhibited excellent anti-permeability, antioxidant capacity and biocompatibility, making them a potential substitute for conventional petroleum-based sunscreen agents.

Abstract:The rapid development of the industry has led to the destruction of the earth's ozone layer, resulting in an increasingly serious problem of excessive ultraviolet radiation. Exploring effective measures to address these problems has become a hot topic. Lignin shows promise in the design and preparation of anti-ultraviolet products due to its inherent properties. However, it is important to investigate way to enhance the reactivity of lignin and determine its application form in related products. In this study, phenolic reactions with tea polyphenols were conducted through acid-catalyzed conversion, utilizing organic solvent lignin as the primary material. The phenolic hydroxyl content of the original lignin increased significantly by 218.8 %, resulting in notable improvements in UV resistance and oxidation resistance for phenolic lignin. Additionally, micro-nanocapsule emulsions were formed using phenolic lignin particles as surfactants through ultrasonic cavitation with small-molecule sunscreens. A bio-based sunscreen was prepared with phenolated lignin micro-nanocapsules as the active ingredient, achieving an SPF 100.2 and demonstrating excellent stability. The sunscreen also exhibited strong antioxidant properties and impermeability, ensuring user safety. This research offers a current solution for improving the application of lignin in sunscreens while also broadening the potential uses of plant-based materials in advanced functional products.

Abstract:Lignin is a potential natural sunlight protector because its benzene derivative structure can absorb UV rays. Pure lignin is not good enough for sunblock because lignin is not fully dispersed in cream, and the range of absorbed UV rays is not broad. In this work, lignin was modified with polybutyl acrylate (PBA) and self-assembled into microspheres (L-PBA-NPs) to enhance its compatibility in cream, and it was blended with p-coumaric acid (CA) to extend its light absorbance. The hydrophobicity of grafted PBA on lignin and the microsphere of the modified lignin provided an ability to disperse in oily pure cream. To improve the sun protection factor (SPF) of the blended lignin-based sunscreen, CA with different UV absorbing ability was mixed inside the modified lignin to form CA@L-PBA-NPs. When CA and L-PBA-NPs (1:1) were added in cream with 5%, the SPF of the blended lignin sunscreen reached 18.8. After irradiation of the CA@L-PBA-NPs sunscreen under UV for 3 h, the SPF of the blended lignin-based sunscreen increased slightly because of more conjugated structures produced in lignin. The CA@L-PBA-NPs in sunscreens have great potential as a green ingredient to substitute for the small-molecule sunscreen active ingredients in commercial sunscreen products.

Abstract:Natural compounds are becoming increasingly popular in the fields of pharmaceuticals and cosmetics. One such compound is lignin, a plant-derived aromatic polymer that serves as a natural anti-ultraviolet agent. Conventional methods for extracting lignin from plant materials typically involve performing procedures in harsh environments, such as dissolving it in highly alkaline solutions or subjecting it to treatment in acidic conditions. In this study, lignin was extracted from coconut husk under milder conditions, using neutral solvents and ultrasonic treatment, which allowed us to obtain lignin with significantly improved properties. The developed method facilitated the creation of light-colored lignin, which was employed as a natural ingredient in sunblock cream. Furthermore, for the sake of comparison, lignin was extracted under more rigorous conditions using the traditional method. The research findings confirm that the light-colored lignin sample exhibits a higher level of UV absorption. Furthermore, light-colored lignin demonstrates a synergistic effect when combined with commercial moisturizing creams and sunscreens, leading to a significant enhancement in their SPF performance against both UVA and direct sunlight exposure. This study highlights the potential value of incorporating lignin as a valuable natural ingredient in sunblock and cosmetic products.
Preparation and Application of Light-Colored Lignin Nanoparticles for Broad-Spectrum Sunscreens

Abstract:Recently, natural sun blockers have been drawing considerable attention because synthetic UV filters could have adverse effects not only on humans but also on the environment. Even though lignin, the second most abundant renewable resource on earth, is a natural UV-absorbing polymer, its unfavorable dark color hampers its applications in sunscreens. In this work, we obtained light-colored lignin (CEL) from rice husks through cellulolytic enzyme treatment and subsequent solvent extraction under mild conditions and compared CEL to technical lignin from rice husks using the International Commission on Illumination L*a*b* (CIELAB) color space. Spherical nanoparticles of CEL (CEL-NP) were also prepared using a solvent shifting method and evaluated for broad-spectrum sunscreens. A moisturizing cream blended with CEL-NP exhibited higher sun protection factor (SPF) and UVA PF (protection factor) values than that with CEL. In addition, CEL-NP had synergistic effects when blended with an organic UV-filter sunscreen: CEL-NP enhanced the SPF and UVA PF values of the sunscreen greatly. However, there was no synergistic effect between CEL-NP and inorganic sunscreens. We expect nanoparticles of light-colored lignin to find high-value-added applications as a natural UV-blocking additive in sunscreens and cosmetics.

Natural components in sunscreens: Topical formulations with sun protection factor (SPF)

Abstract:Artificial sunscreens are already gaining traction in order to protect the skin from sunburns, photoaging and photocarcinogenesis. However, the efficacy and safety of most artificial sunscreen constituents are hindered by their photostability, toxicity and damage to marine ecosystems. Natural selection and evolution have ensured that plants and animals have developed effective protective mechanisms against the deleterious side effects of oxidative stress and ultraviolet radiation (UV). Hence, natural antioxidants such as sun blockers are drawing considerable attention. The exact mechanism by which natural components act as sunscreen molecules has not been clearly established. However, conjugated π system is reported to play an important role in protecting the vital genetic material within the organism. Compared to artificial sunscreens, natural sunscreens with strong UV absorptive capacities are largely limited by low specific extinction value and by their inability to spread in large-scale sunscreen cosmetic applications. Previous studies have documented that natural components exert their photoprotective effects (such as improved skin elasticity and hydration, skin texture, and wrinkles) through their antioxidant effects, and through the regulation of UV-induced skin inflammation, barrier impairment and aging. This review focuses on natural antioxidant topical formulations with sun protection factor (SPF). Lignin, melanin, silymarin and other ingredients have been added to high sun protection nature sunscreens without any physical or chemical UV filters. This paper also provides a reference for adopting novel technical measures (extracting high content components, changing the type of solution, optimizing formulation, applying Nano technology, et al) to design and prepare nature sunscreen formulations equated with commercial sunscreen formulations. Another strategy is to add natural antioxidants from plants, animals, microorganisms and marine organisms as special enhancer or modifier ingredients to reinforce SPF values. Although the photoprotective effects of natural components have been established, their deleterious side effects have not been elucidated.
Synthesis of lignin based composites of TiO2 for potential application as radical scavengers in sunscreen formulation

Abstract:Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is added in sunscreens due to its ability to absorb ultraviolet (UV) light. However, upon irradiation of UV light, reactive oxygen species particularly hydroxyl radical which can damage human skin will be generated. In this study, lignin/TiO2 composites were employed to quench the hydroxyl radicals generated by the TiO2. The lignin was extracted from oil palm empty fruit bunch (OPEFB) via kraft and soda pulping processes. The kraft lignin composite was labelled as KL/TiO2 whereas the soda lignin composite was labelled as SL/TiO2. The lignins and the composites were characterized by FTIR, UV spectroscopy, 13C NMR, SEM, EDX, and XRD. The relative hydroxyl radical production of composites and TiO2 were compared through photo-oxidation of coumarin to 7-hydroxycoumarin as a test medium. The effect of types and amounts of lignin used were studied. The KL/TiO2 composite showed the least radical production due to higher phenolic hydroxyl content of kraft lignin. The activity of the hydroxyl radicals will be quenched when it abstract hydrogen atoms from the phenolic hydroxyl groups.

Abstract:In recent decades, there has been a huge increase in the ultraviolet radiations of the sun hitting the surface of the earth that has eventually resulted in the depletion of the ozone layer. Keeping this thing in mind, it is a must to protect our skin from these rays as they cause harmful damage to human skin. These rays cause hyperpigmentation, photoaging, erythema, skin cancer and many other problems. Using sunscreen to protect our skin from them is the most popular way these days. Sunscreens are regularly tested and assigned a specific sun protection factor (SPF) according to their efficacy to protect skin. Most of synthetic sunscreen agents are very harmful for us as they cause Leukocytosis, allergic reactions, damage DNA(deoxyribonucleic acid), reduction of organ weight and evennanemia. Many Compounds that are obtained from nature for example lignin, flavonoids, aloe Vera, tomato, Shea butter, jojoba oil, evening primrose oil, saffron, almond, etc.(Et cetra) are also efficient in protecting our skin from these rays. They also have higher antioxidant capacities and many other paybacks as compared to synthetic ones. In this paper, an effort has been made to review these natural sunscreen agents so as to make people aware about their beneficial properties.
Lignin: A Review on Structure, Properties, and Applications as a Light-Colored UV Absorber

Abstract:Lignin is a promising UV-shielding material to substitute the synthetic absorbers in a composite due to its excellent UV-shielding property. The chromophores group of lignin is responsible for the UV-shielding property of composites, but it brings an undesirable dark color. This perspective is the first to review the recent progress on fabricating light-colored UV-shielding composites that contain lignin; we provide a clear picture of the concept of light-colored UV-absorbing lignin composite materials that can be used in food packaging, healthcare products, and solar panel protection. The UV-absorbing and photostability mechanisms are introduced by correlating UV absorption with intrinsic factors, like phenolic substructures and molecular weight of lignin. Extrinsic factors that affect the UV-shielding properties and color of lignin, such as the extraction process, chemical modification method, and obtained size of lignin, are also systematically discussed in this perspective. By summarizing recent studies on the synergetic effect between the lignin and the second constitute materials, this perspective discusses the benefits of lignin to the composite's overall properties, such as stability under UV radiation, mechanical property, dispersity, and water permeability.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:A wide range of applications are available for kraft lignin (KL). However, the dark color and wide size distribution of KL make it challenging to use in cosmetics and nanoparticle preparation. In this study, we fractionated KL from a paper-making enterprise using ultrafiltration membrane fractionation, and obtained four kinds of lignin with different molecular weights, namely ultrafiltration lignin (UL). Following that, lignin nanoparticles (ULNPs) were formed by self-assembly from four types of UL. Analyzing the UL and ULNP properties, the low molecular weight lignin, such as ULA, exhibited good antioxidant properties (89.47 %, 5 mg/mL), high brightness (ISO% = 7.55), high L ⁎ value (L ⁎ = 72.3) and low polydispersity index (PDI = 1.41). The ULNP showed a narrow size distribution (0.8–1.4 m) and high dispersibility in sunscreen. When ULNP was added to sunscreen with 5 % load, its sun protection factor (SPF) value increased from 14.93 to 63.74. Therefore, this study offered an effective way for the comprehensive utilization of pulping waste KL.

Abstract:Background: Synthetic polymers present disadvantages such as high cost, limited availability, safety concerns, environmental hazards and accumulation in body. Lignin, an aromatic biopolymer, is highly abundant and offers various advantages including cost-effectiveness, biocompatibility and biodegradability. It also possesses various pharmacological activities including antioxidant, antibacterial, anticancer and UV protection, thus lignin has become a popular biopolymer in recent years and is no more considered as bio-waste rather extensive research is been carried out on developing it as drug carrier. Lignin also has non-biomedical applications including dispersing agents, surfactants, detergent/ cleaning agents, energy storage, etc. Methods: This review compiles patents granted on production of technical lignin, different lignin therapeutic carriers and its biomedical and non-biomedical applications. The literature is collected from recent years including both articles as well as patents and is carefully analyzed and compiled in an easy to comprehend pattern for guiding future research. Results: The reviewed patents and articles highlighted the advancement made in lignin isolation and valorization. Numerous lignin nanoformulations as drug delivery agents or as standalone entities with various pharmacological actions like antibacterial, antioxidant or UV protectant have been reported. As well as industrial applications of lignin as adhesives, insulators or supercapacitors have also made lignin a biopolymer of choice. Conclusion: Lignin being a bio-inspired polymer has huge potential in commercial applications. New methods of lignin isolation from lignocellulosic biomass including physical pretreatments, solvent fraction, and chemical and biological pretreatment have been widely patented. Several micro/nano lignin formulations with improved and controllable reactivity like nanocontainers, nanocapsules, nanoparticles have also been reported recently. Also, various pharmacological properties of lignin have also been explored, thus valorization of lignin is a hot topic of hour.
