Abstract:'Chuanzao 1'is a new early-fruiting walnut cultivar derived from the cross'Yunxin 7926'× 'Xiazao'.The nut is large and round,with the smooth surface.The shell thickness is 0.9 cm,and kernel percentage is 51.6%.The total fat content is 72.14%,and total protein content is 16.80%.The grafted seedlings could flower and fruit after planting half a year.The production of its 5-year-old crown projection area is 595 g·m-2.This early-maturing cultivar has high yield and strong fruiting ability.Meanwhile,it has good adaptability resistance to drought,wind,dust,disease and insects.

Abstract:Development process of Shimen walnut was expounded,which was a well-known product with long history.The breeding process and primary features of Shimen walnut cultivars were introduced.One cultivar was named as Yuanbao.The nut shape liked a ingot.The fruit mass was 14.5 g.The kernel rate was 59.2%.Total fat and protein contents in the kernel were 68.2% and 17.7%,respectively.The kernel tasted fragrant.One cultivar was named as Longzhu.The nut shape was nearly globular.The fruit mass was 13.91 g.The kernel rate was 54.71%,the kernel total fat and protein contents were 72.9% and 13.0%,respectively.One cultivar was named as Kuixiang,and the nut shape was globular.The fruit mass was 13.9 g.The kernel rate was 55.4%.The kernel total fat content was 68.5% and protein content was 18.0%.Further more,the nucleolus was enrich with aromatic taste.One cultivar was named as Shuobao.The fruit shape looks liked ingot.The fruit mass was 21.15 g.The kernel rate was 52.12%.The kernel total fat and protein contents were 59.1% and 22.3%,respectively.
Observation on Phenological Period and Varieties Choice in Avoiding the Late Frost Damage of Early-fruiting Walnut Cultivars

Abstract:Aimed at the late frost damage in northern region which restricts production of walnut of benefit,choosed avoiding late frost damage varieties and appropriate pollination varieties in Weihe plain,phenological period of 12 early-fruiting walnut cultivars were observed.The results showed that different early-fruiting walnut cultivars had different phenological period.The phenophase(except the leafing stage)of early-fruiting walnut were very significant positive correlation on effective accumulative temperature.'Liaohe No.3','Liaohe No.4','Xiangling','Luguang','Za 343','Vina','Tulare' and 'Chandler' were first male type variety;'Xilin No.2','Xifu No.2','Wen185','Zhonglin No.5' were first female cultivars.Male and female flowering of 'Xilin No.2','Xifu No.2','Zhonglin No.5','Vina','Tulare' and 'Chandler' was part encounter;male and female flowering of 'Xiangling','Luguang','Liaohe No.3','Liaohe No.4','Wen185','Za 343' didn't encounter;'Xilin No.2','Xifu No.2','Xiangling','Luguang','Za 343' were pollination for 'Liaohe No.3','Liaohe No.4','Wen 185';'Za 343' and 'Wen 185' could be mutual pollination.The female flowers period of 'Xiangling','Luguang' and 'Za 343' basically could avoid late frost harm;'Vina','Tulare' and 'Chandler' could avoid late frost damage,were considered the first choice of walnut cultivation varieties in Weibei area.

Meanwhile,it has good adaptability resistance to late spring cold events.

Identification of Branch Cold Resistance of Walnut New Cultivated Varieties Jinboxiang

Abstract:Jinboxiang is a new walnut variety through 20 years seedling breeding by Shanxi Academy of Agricultural Sciences.For further promotion of walnut planting area,to speed up the walnut varieties breeding process,Jinboxiang 1-8,Jinbofeng 1,and Youzhu 181 as materials,at room temperature-15 ℃ and-25 ℃,the organizational structure and membrane lipid phase transition of the annual branches were measured.The membrane lipid peroxidation,cell membrane permeability,osmotic adjustment substances(soluble sugar,soluble protein and proline),protective enzyme activity and other indicators were also measured for a comprehensive analysis of its cold resistance.Results: there is a close relationship between organizational structure and cold resistance.The greater the proportion of the xylem branches,the stronger the cold resistance;there are different organizational structures of annual branches of walnut cultivars.The relative conductivity and the content of malondialdehyde of branch after treatment under low temperature is increased;SOD,POD activity showed a "low-high" trend and significantly correlated with the relative conductivity change;the soluble sugar,soluble protein and proline content is increased,but the variation between varieties is relatively large.Using SAS software,the principal component analysis method for comprehensive evaluation of cold resistance,the preliminary conclusion of 10 walnut varieties order: Jinboxiang 4Jinboxiang 6Youzhu 181Jinboxiang 1Jinboxiang 2Jinboxiang 7Jinboxiang 3Jinboxiang 1Jinboxiang 5Jinboxiang 8.

Abstract:The situation and characterization of spring frozen damage for walnut trees in Shaanxi Province was studied to obtain basic imformation for prevention.Field investigation was conducted in the walnut gardens in three areas of Shaanxi,i.e.,Shangluo,Guanzhong,and Weibei.The results demonstrated that the walnut yield was widely affected by the spring frozen damage in 2013,especially in Weibei area with a yield lost of more than 60%.The most severe damage was found in the walnut gardens located at top of slope and shady slope,and also in those without proper management.For a single walnut tree,the most severe damage was found to be the branches direction niches at west and north of a canopy and the middle and bottom of a canopy.The results above indicated that the location choosing and management for walnut gardens were important for frozen damage prevention for walnut trees.

Abstract:[Objective] The effective measure of flower and fruit-protecting of walnut was screened out.[Method] The 2-year-old walnut variety—Yunxin being taken as the field experimental material,the effect of seven nutrient elements and hormones with three concentrations and water as the CK on the rate of fruit-setting of walnut was tested.[Results] The sugar-praying could significantly improve the rate of walnut fruit-setting and when its concentration was 3 g/L,the rate of fruit-setting was 29.9%.5 g/L of urea was the optimal treating concentration,which rate of fruit-setting of walnut was increased by 60.4% more than that of the CK.The rate of fruit-setting was 20.2,3.0 and 25% higher than those of the CK when the concentration of KH2PO4 was 1,3 and 5 g/L,respectively.The borax-spraying with the concentration of 5 g/L could raise 36% more than that of the CK with the rate of fruit-setting of 51.2%.GA3 did not show the obvious effect on it.2,4-D with the concentration of 35 mg/L could promote the rate of fruit-setting by 11.9% more than that of the CK.The best concentration of brassinolide-spraying was 65 mg/L.[Conclusion] The spraying of sugar(3 g/L),urea(5 g/L),KH2PO4(5 g/L),borax(5 g/L) and 2,4-D(35 mg/L) could significantly increase the rate of walnut fruit-setting and urea(5 g/L) showed the most significant effect and there was no significant effect from the treatment of GA3 and brassinolide-spraying.

Abstract:Dominant influence factors of survival ratio and growth of grafted walnut were studied under rootstocks of different age,width and height,and scions of width and buds in this paper.The results were as follows:Survival ratio of seedling grafting was higher than that of 1-year-old seedling grafting,and sprout growth of 1-year-old seedling grafting was quicker than that of seedling grafting.The effect of rootstocks on survival ratio and growth of grafted walnut was width>height,and wide rootstocks was good.Survival ratio and growth which scions had one or two buds was good by seedling grafting;Survival ratio with two buds of scions was good by 1-year-old seedling grafting,on the other hand,growth with one bud of scions was good;The effect of scions on survival ratio and growth of grafted walnut was width>buds,and wide scions was good.

Abstract:Nine early fruiting walnut cultivars were used as the test materials to determinate the effect of low temperature stress to the young sprout using the indexes such as relative conductivity,soluble protein,soluble sugar,proline,superoxide dismutase(SOD)activity,peroxidase(POD)activity and catalase(CAT)activity in artificial simulation low temperature environment. Taking cold resistant coefficient of each physiological index of walnut leaves as index to measure cold resistance capacity,and cold resistance of early fruiting walnut cultivars were comprehensively evaluated by using principal components analysis,membership function and cluster analysis based on cold resistant coefficient of these indexes. The sequence of cold resistance of nine early fruiting walnut cultivars was:Liaoning 4 Chandler Zha 343 Xiangling Xilin 2 Xifu 2 Xilin 3 Liaoning 3 Luguang. Liaoning 4 and Chandler belong to high cold resistance group;The medium cold resistance group covers Zha 343,Xiangling and Xilin 2,the others four cultivars,Xifu 2,Xilin 3,Liaoning 3 and Luguang belong to low cold resistance group. The comprehensive evaluation results is similar to results observed in morphological characteristics of shoots.

Abstract:In order to speed up the cold-tolerance breeding and improve the cultivation efficiency of walnut to further expand its planting area, six walnut cultivars (lines) including Luguo No. 8, N13-1, Luguo No. 12, N17-24, Taile, and Xiangling were taken as test materials and treated at -15 degrees C, -20 degrees C, -25 degrees C, -30 degrees C, and -35 degrees C, with their tissue's water content, membrane permeability, lipid peroxidation, protective enzyme activities, and osmotic adjustment substances determined to detect the cold resistance of the cultivars (lines). There existed greater differences in the ratio of free water to bound water in the branches of the cultivars (lines). Under low temperature treatment, the branches membrane permeability and malondialdehyde content increased, superoxide dismutase activity presented an ascend-descend-ascend-descend trend, catalase activity decreased after an initial increase, and the soluble protein and proline contents increased, but the variation degrees of these parameters differed with cultivars (lines). After the recovery from low temperature, N17-24 and Luguo No. 12 had a significantly higher germination rate than the other cultivars (lines). By using fuzzy mathematics method, the cold-resistance of test walnut cultivars (lines) was evaluated as N17-24 > Luguo No. 12 > N13-1 > Luguo No. 8 > Taile > Xiangling.
Tracing Superior Late-Leafing Genotypes of Persian Walnut for Managing Late-Spring Frost in Walnut Orchards

Abstract:Evaluating genetic diversity in walnut (Juglans regia L.) populations is a rapid approach used by walnut breeding programs to distinguish superior genotypes. The present study was conducted on the walnut population of Hamedan Province, one of the richest and most genetically diverse regions in Iran, during 2018–2019. After the initial screening, 47 genotypes were selected for further evaluation of pomological and phenological traits based on International Plant Genetic Resources Institute (IPGRI) descriptors. Nut and kernel weights among the selected genotypes ranged from 7.15 to 21.05 g and 3.0 to 10.8 g, respectively. Principal component analysis (PCA) categorized the genotypes into three distinct groups. Whereas the cluster analysis (CA) revealed the similarities and dissimilarities among the genotypes by identifying four major clusters. Spearman correlation analysis showed a positive correlation (p < 0.01) between nut weight (NWT), nut size, and kernel weight (KW), while a negative correlation (p < 0.01) between shell thickness (STH) and packing tissue thickness (PTT) with kernel percentage (KP) was observed. Lastly, 10 of 47 genotypes (TAL8, TAL9, TAL10, TAL14, TAL19, TAL22, TB2, TB4, TB6, and RDGH5) were considered superior. Superior genotypes were late-leafing (25–40 days after the standard) and displayed a lateral bearing (LB) habit with heavy nuts (12.52–16.82 g) and kernels (6.53–8.15 g), thin shells (1.06–1.25 mm), and lightly colored kernels.

Abstract:Study was carried out on the factors resulting in browning of walnut explants in vitro culture. The result showed that new shoots collected in April have severer browning and a higher death rate while the shoots collected in June are more effective for culture,with the dormant buds to be second to them.In vitro culture,the browning of explants could be reduced with the liquid medium.With the help of hor- mones added at proper concentrations (6-BA 1.0mg/L,IAA 0.2mg/L or GA 0.5mg/L) explants can have a better germination of auxiliary buds,with the browning phenomena lessened.Addition of Na2S203 to medium can effectively prevent walnut explants from browning,and promote germination and shoot growth.

Abstract:[Objective] The study aimed to breed a new early-fruiting,high-yield and high-quality walnut variety with strong adaptability.[Method] The hybridization were carried out with Yunxin 7926 as female parent and Xiazao as male parent and the superior early-fruiting individuals were selected out from their filial generations.The new early-fruiting walnut variety Shuling was bred out through expanding propagaton grafted with germ anvil and regional experiment and its characteristics were determined.[Result] Shuling was the hybrid generation of good walnut variety Yunxin 7926 and local walnut variety Xiazao of Sichuan.Its tree vigor was medium to strong,its early fertile capability was outstanding and it fruited in the grafting year.The production of its 2-year-old crown projection area was 89 g/m2;the nucleolus was enrich,with aroma and high-quality and the kernel rate was 58.80%-61.86%;It had good adaptability,resistance to drought,anthrax and black spot and significant heterosis.[Conclusion] The new early-fruiting walnut variety was suitable to be planted in the mountain and hill area with altitude below 1 200 m,soil thickness above 50 cm and soil pH value of 6.0-7.5.

Abstract:In order to investigate the frost resistance and the mechanism,6 walnut cultivars,‘Lvling’,‘Xiangling’,‘Liaoning NO. 1’,‘Shangsong NO. 6’,‘Zhonglin NO. 1’and‘Qingxiang’,were used as materials to determine their supercooling point,freezing point and electrolyte leakage rate in leaves and ovaries in April 15th,and to calculate the semi-lethal temperature. Their frost freezing indexes in April 20 ~21th were investigated. The results showed that the frost freezing indexes of‘Lvling’,‘Xiangling’,‘Liaoning NO. 1’,‘Shangsong NO. 6’,‘Zhonglin NO. 1’and‘Qingxiang’ were 41. 97%,52. 65%,54. 88%,67. 58%,74. 93%,and 98. 67%,respectively. The frost freezing indexes of‘Lvling’was very significantly lower than those of the other cultivars. The supercooling points in leaves of‘Lvling’,‘Xiangling’,‘Liaoning NO. 1’,‘Shangsong NO. 6’,‘Zhonglin NO. 1’and‘Qingxiang’were -4. 40 ℃,-4. 27 ℃,-3. 87 ℃,-3. 73 ℃,-3. 53 ℃ and -3. 23 ℃,respectively,and the freezing points were -3. 83 ℃,-3. 27 ℃,-3. 10 ℃,-3. 30 ℃,-2. 47 ℃ and -2. 43 ℃,respectively. The supercooling points in leaves and ovaries,the freezing points in ovaries of‘Lvling’and‘Xiangling’were very significantly lower than those of the other cultivars. The freezing point in leaves of‘Lvling’was very significantly lower than those of the other cultivars. The semi-lethal temperatures in leaves of‘Lvling’,‘Xiangling’,‘Liaoning NO. 1’,‘Shangsong NO. 6’,‘Zhonglin NO. 1 ’ and‘Qingxiang’was -3. 33 ℃,-2. 96 ℃,-2. 81 ℃,-2. 63 ℃,-2. 31 ℃ and -2. 25 ℃,respectively,and that of in leaves of‘Lvling’was very significant lower than those of the other cultivars. The semi-lethal temperatures in ovaries of the 6 cultivars were -2. 62 ℃,-2. 58 ℃,-2. 39 ℃,-2. 05 ℃,-1. 80 ℃ and -1. 07 ℃,respectively. There was no significant difference in the semi -lethal temperature between‘Lvling’and‘Xiangling’,but theirs were very significantly lower than those of the other cultivars. The analyses of supercooling point,freezing point,electrolyte leakage rate and the frost resistance in the field all indicated that the frost resistance of the 6 cultivars from high to low was‘Lvling’,‘Xiangling’,‘Liaoning NO. 1’,‘Shangsong NO. 6’,‘Zhonglin NO. 1’,and‘Qingxiang’.
Identification of the Anthracnose Fungus of Walnut (juglans Spp.) and Resistance Evaluation Through Physiological Responses of Resistant Vs. Susceptible Hosts

Abstract:Walnut anthracnose is one of the most serious diseases of walnut globally. In this study, the pathogen was identified as Colletotrichum gloeosporioides by morphological and molecular approaches. Then, the resistance of 18 walnut genotypes was evaluated by field investigation as well as field and detached leaflet inoculation. A field inoculation assay was used as a benchmark for comparing field evaluation and the detached leaflet inoculation assay. Seven genotypes, Panhe1 and clones 71 and 200 of Juglans sigillata, Yanyuanzao and Qingxiang of J. regia, and Shujiang1 and Chuanzao1 of J. regia x J. sigillata, displayed high resistance in all assays, suggesting that they may be good candidates for further evaluation. Subsequently, two genotypes (Panhe1 with high resistance, and clone 199 with high susceptibility) were selected to analyse the different physiological responses between highly resistant and susceptible genotypes after inoculation. C. gloeosporioides infection induced the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), polyphenol oxidase (PPO), and chitinase; they were all significantly increased in both Panhe1 and clone 199. However, the POD activity and its change rate in Panhe1 were significantly higher than those in clone 199. The change rates of PPO activity, and total phenol and proline content in Panhe1 were significantly higher than those in clone 199. Moreover, the change rates of SOD activity, malondialdehyde, and soluble sugar content in clone 199 were significantly higher than those in Panhe1. These findings not only enhance our understanding of the resistance of walnut to anthracnose, but also lay the foundation for breeding anthracnose-resistant walnuts in the future.
