Abstract:Findings from recent studies suggest that students’ pathways into mathematics-related careers begin as early as middle school when students are forming lasting self-perceptions of their academic abilities. Middle school is also a time when students begin making choices about future coursework in math, science, and technology that will have long-term implications for their academic and career achievements. Because important self-efficacy beliefs are forming and young adolescents are making decisions that impact career choice, it is important to provide support for students early in their schooling to maximize student potential and consideration of mathematics education and mathematics-related careers. Supporting self-efficacy for math is important for most middle school students but may be crucial for girls who often experience significant declines in their feelings of competence in this domain. Middle school teachers have an opportunity to support student learning beyond the academic curriculum, and this article describes how a self-efficacy intervention can support important skills, attitudes, and dispositions necessary for mathematics achievement and consideration of mathematics-related careers.
Three Foci of Mathematic Teachers' Considerations in Evaluation of School Students' Achievements

Abstract:As part of efforts to improve the quality of mathematics' teaching and evaluation, we examined the focus of math teachers' considerations in evaluating students’ achievements, as well as the links between these focuses, regarding differences between students and the validity and reliability of assessment methods and examinations. Based on the categorization of issues that concern math teachers while assessing their students, a self-report quantitative-questionnaire was constructed and validated. The questionnaire included three foci of consideration for mathematics evaluation: considerations regarding evaluating learners, considerations regarding the choice of assessment methods, and assessment considerations that are unique to mathematics; positive, high, and significant were found between them. The main conclusion is that math teachers aspire to evaluate their students on the basis of a broad picture, that considers the needs of students studying mathematics as a unique discipline, the available assessment methods and their ability to adapt them to a valid and reliable assessment in mathematics, and the overall need to focus on the challenges and difficulties which are unique to assessing the discipline of mathematics. The findings also strengthen the claim that assessing math learning has unique considerations that are distinguished from assessment considerations in other disciplines.

Abstract:The "new math" curriculum, one version of which was developed in the 1950s and 1960s by the School Mathematics Study Group under the auspices of the National Science Foundation, occasioned a great deal of controversy among mathematicians. Well before its rejection by parents and teachers, some mathematicians were vocal critics, decrying the new curriculum because of the way it described the practice and history of the discipline. The nature of mathematics, despite the field's triumphs in helping to win World War II and its midcentury promotion as the key to a modern technological society, was surprisingly contested in this period. Supporters of the School Mathematics Study Group, like its director, Edward Begle, emphasized the importance of portraying mathematics as a system of abstract structures, while opponents like Morris Kline argued that math was essentially a tool for understanding the natural world. The debate about the curriculum--and the role of mathematicians in its design--was also a debate about the underlying identity of the subject itself.

Abstract:Math mindsets are mathematical abilities beliefs that can take two forms: growth (i.e., abilities can develop) and fixed (i.e., abilities are innate). Math mindsets during elementary school received little attention, especially among younger students. This study examined math mindsets and tested a mediation model in which math achievement predicted math mindsets via math self-concept. Elementary students ( N = 220) from grades 1–6 completed a questionnaire in class. Results showed that growth and fixed math mindsets can be measured and distinguished in younger students, younger students endorsed growth math mindset more strongly than older students, and girls endorsed it more strongly than boys. Structural equation modeling showed that math achievement positively and directly link on both dimensions of math self-concept (affect and competency), and that affect directly link to a stronger adoption of a growth math mindset while competency negatively and directly link on growth and fixed math mindsets. Findings have important implications for mindset theory and interventions.

Abstract:In this paper, we examine mathematicians' views on the value of advanced mathematics for secondary mathematics teachers. The data comprise semi-structured interviews with 24 mathematicians from 10 universities. The findings indicate that the value of advanced mathematics courses for prospective secondary mathematics teachers lies in their potential to offer connections across mathematical domains, mathematical experience for the development of problem-solving abilities, and increased epistemological awareness of the subject. Additionally, mathematicians' examples that connect advanced and school mathematics are presented and discussed. While the mathematicians provided rich examples of such connections, we noted that such examples were relatively scarce and accordingly sought possible explanations in the discussion of the findings.

Abstract:Abstract This research is a qualitative research based on classroom reports. The purpose of the study was to investigate the effect of the RME approach on the imagination and creative thinking abilities of elementary school students in solving math problems. The method of data collection was done through written tests, observations, and interviews. The participants in this study consisted of a class teacher, 36 grade 6 elementary school students, and an observer. The results showed that the application of the realistic mathematics education (RME) learning approach had a positive effect, namely encouraging the development of students' imaginative power and creative thinking skills in solving problems. The principles of RME are in line with the objectives of learning mathematics, namely to equip them with the ability to think logically, realistically, analytically, systematically, critically, and creatively.

Abstract:Mathematics education continues to be a challenging matter to explore in the United States. For instance, student mathematics achievement rate has decreased or remained unchanged over the last few decades (“NAEP – 2015 Mathematics,” 2015; Provasnik, Stephens, & Perkins, 2016). Moreover, when students advance through grade-levels in school their attitudes toward mathematics often decrease (Ing & Nylund-Gibson, 2017; Mullis et al., 2016; Tuohilampi et al., 2014). This quantitative study aims to measure changes in attitudes toward mathematics across the middle school years. Five attitudinal factors emerged from the study: (1) self-efficacy and self-concept beliefs, (2) motivation to succeed in mathematics, (3) value of mathematics, (4) mathematics anxiety and stress, and (5) enjoyment of mathematics. By using a modified survey instrument and analysis of variance tests, the researcher found significant decreases in the areas of motivation to succeed in mathematics, value of mathematics, and enjoyment of mathematics among 547 sixth, seventh, and eighth graders. As a secondary analysis, the researcher found key differences in attitudes between the two traditional genders, and between standard level and advanced level mathematics classes, and among different races. In these analyses, the reported highest levels of positive attitudes toward mathematics were male, Asian, and students in the advanced level mathematics classes. Additionally, the researcher found correlations among the five factors which revealed multiple key associations. Keywords: Mathematics Education, Attitudes, Changes, Middle School Students

Abstract:Conventional mathematics teaching methods emphasize speed and accuracy, creating unnecessary pressure and often inaccurately measuring children's achievements. This research aims to build a framework, systematically examine students' affective areas, especially mathematical dispositions, and analyze the urgency of Advanced Mathematical Thinking (AMT). This research is a comprehensive investigative or exploratory mixed methods research using data triangulation. The subjects involved in this research were 80 elementary school students. The data collection method used was a questionnaire. In addition, this study combined open-ended questions and random narratives that captured participants' perspectives on mathematics learning. The data analysis technique uses qualitative and quantitative descriptive analysis. The research results show that teachers must consider students' various cognitive, emotional and psychomotor capacities and constraints during the educational process. This can be done using appropriate learning activities and methodologies, such as individual assignments and exploratory learning that adapt to students' abilities. Additionally, using narrative-based summative assessments can be an appropriate approach for educators to identify and analyze the specific needs of their students. This research implies the importance of considering students' psychological and emotional factors in designing effective mathematics learning strategies.
Democratizing Signal Processing and Machine Learning: Math Learning Equity for Elementary and Middle School Students

Abstract:Signal Processing (SP) and Machine Learning (ML) rely on good math and coding knowledge, in particular, linear algebra, probability, and complex numbers. A good grasp of these relies on scalar algebra learned in middle school. The ability to understand and use scalar algebra well, in turn, relies on a good foundation in basic arithmetic. Because of various systemic barriers, many students are not able to build a strong foundation in arithmetic in elementary school. This leads them to struggle with algebra and everything after that. Since math learning is cumulative, the gap between those without a strong early foundation and everyone else keeps increasing over the school years and becomes difficult to fill in college. In this article we discuss how SP faculty and graduate students can play an important role in starting, and participating in, university-run (or other) out-of-school math support programs to supplement students' learning. Two example programs run by the authors (CyMath at ISU and Ab7G at Purdue) are briefly described. The second goal of this article is to use our perspective as SP, and engineering, educators who have seen the long-term impact of elementary school math teaching policies, to provide some simple almost zero cost suggestions that elementary schools could adopt to improve math learning: (i) more math practice in school, (ii) send small amounts of homework (individual work is critical in math), and (iii) parent awareness (math resources, need for early math foundation, clear in-school test information and sharing of feedback from the tests). In summary, good early math support (in school and through out-of-school programs) can help make SP and ML more accessible.

Abstract:This article discusses the importance of open-ended problems in mathematics education. The traditional approach to teaching mathematics focuses on the repetitive practice of well-defined problems with a clear solution, leaving little room for students to develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Open-ended problems, on the other hand, open-ended problems require students to apply their knowledge creatively and flexibly, often with multiple solutions. We herein present a case study of a high school mathematics class that incorporated open-ended problems into its curriculum. The students were given challenging problems requiring them to think beyond what they had learned in class and develop their problem-solving methods. The study results showed that students exposed to open-ended problems significantly improved their problem-solving abilities and ability to communicate and collaborate with their peers. The article also highlights the benefits of open-ended problems in preparing students for real-world situations. By encouraging students to develop their problem-solving strategies, they are better equipped to face the unpredictable challenges of the future. Additionally, open-ended problems promote a growth mindset and a love for learning, as students are encouraged to take risks and explore new ideas. Overall, the article argues that incorporating open-ended problems into mathematics education is a necessary step towards developing students’ critical thinking skills and preparing them for success in the real world.

Abstract:Direct assessments of instructional practice (e.g., classroom observations) are necessary to identify and eliminate opportunity gaps in students’ learning of mathematics. This study examined 114 middle school mathematics classrooms in four instructionally focused urban districts. Results from the Instructional Quality Assessment identified high percentages of lessons featuring cognitively challenging tasks, but declines in cognitive challenge during implementation and discussions. Overall instructional quality exceeded results from studies with nationally representative samples and paralleled results of studies of instructionally focused urban middle schools. Significant differences existed between districts, favoring the district with veteran teachers, long-term use of Standards-based curricula, and professional development initiatives.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a novel concept for an abstract algebra course at the secondary school level. Against the backdrop of findings from mathematics education research, we discuss benefits that arise from teaching abstract algebra to secondary school students. We derive suitable content items as well as educational ideas on how to implement them into mathematics classrooms. We build on frameworks from mathematics education research to design a teaching-learning sequence that enables a beneficial learning trajectory across three units—the result is a coherent teaching concept that encompasses Magmas in a hands-on way. It can be used for either extra-curricular activities or advanced courses in mathematics classes, and can be of benefit for mathematics learners.

Maths for Einstein's Universe Tools for Understanding Modern Reality

Abstract:Aversion to mathematics is a recognised and widespread problem. Following a review of the literature on this subject, this paper presents an education program which has been developed to test the hypothesis that transferring attention from traditional school arithmetic to a broad range of mathematical skills relevant to modern science at an early age (ages 7-12) will improve students' attitudes to mathematics, reduce the incidence of maths anxiety and prepare students for topics normally introduced at more senior levels. The program entitled Maths for Einstein's Universe includes five modules covering extreme numbers, estimation, probability, vectors and curved space geometry taught through group activities, games and plays. The modules complement appropriate early learning of modern physical concepts from the subatomic world to cosmology. While connected to science, the program aims to provide meaning and comprehension for socially relevant topics from national budgets to pandemics and opinion polls. The program has been trialled in multiple short workshops and extended learning programs as well as training programs for school teachers. Analysis of knowledge and attitude tests and questionnaires from about 170 participants demonstrate strong student enthusiasm and positive learning outcomes in areas normally considered beyond the ability of students in this age group. Trial results were used to identify strategies for enhancing school mathematics based on creation of stronger links between mathematics and science. We summarise results of pilot trials. In the paper we present the results of learning powers of ten and vectors. In total, around 700 participants have trialled Maths Einstein's Universe with nearly 200 hours of teaching for students and teachers.

Abstract:Due to the shift of civilization from the Industrial Age to the Information Age, mathematical literacy has become a necessity in the twenty-first century. However, in order to learn and contribute to the mathematical community, one has to be in a state of good mental health. When I say 'good mental health,' I mean one has to develop a set of healthy coping strategies, be in a positive learning environment, and have a social support system. Traditionally, universities have been the venue of such higher learning. If these institutions want to remain as thriving grounds for higher education and engines of research, post-secondary institutions need to be aware of these factors and actively contribute to the well-being of its students and faulty. Unfortunately, students do not always receive the support necessary to be mentally healthy. The purpose of this paper is to examine how social awareness and sensitivity of mental health in a university setting is a key component for individuals to flourish academically and grow personally. Several voluntary surveys completed by my first and second year math students at the University of Waterloo will be presented. The surveys investigated the students' experiences at the university, particularly in the Mathematics Department. In addition, this paper explores an alternative way to structure math classes, specifically assignment scheduling, in order to help students develop healthy study habits. The scores for the alternative-scheduled assignments are statistically analyzed and compared to scores of the typical-scheduled assignments currently implemented at the University of Waterloo. Finally, this paper briefly discusses the importance of socialization, specifically for young mathematicians and scientists, and potential consequences of reduced social exposure in the Digital Age.

Abstract:Despite longstanding efforts in the K-12 STEM education community to create meaningful mathematical experiences across disciplines, mathematics continues to be a siloed subject which is tracked based on ability. With an increasing number of high-achieving students enrolling in Algebra I in Grade 7 or earlier, there is a need for research on the readiness of accelerated STEM-intending students to persist in mathematics at the college level. A mathematical mindset framework was employed to explore the relationships between level of Algebra I acceleration, student (n = 2111) and instructor (n = 141) beliefs about sense-making and mistake-making, and attitudes in first-semester college calculus. Findings from a series of multilevel analyses indicate that interactions between student mathematical mindset and perceived progressive teaching practices influence attitudes toward mathematics. While student-centered instruction had a slightly negative effect on attitude, there was a differential effect in relation to student beliefs about sense-making as a metric of success in mathematics. These findings contribute to empirical understandings of mathematical mindset and the complex transition from high school calculus to college calculus. Implications for interdisciplinary STEM education and persistence in STEM undergraduate study are discussed.

Abstract:Recent research in mathematics instruction requires educators to rethink long-established beliefs about teaching, learning, and assessment. In particular, this research underscores the need for problem solving and higher level thinking in mathematics. Consistent with these recommendations, this article presents and illustrates four promising themes for mathematics instruction that have emerged from research involving students with learning disabilities. These themes-(a) providing a broad and balanced mathematics curriculum; (b) engaging students in rich, meaningful problem tasks; (c) accommodating the diverse way in which children learn; and (d) encouraging students to discuss and justify their problem-solving strategies and solutions-suggest ways for rethinking the teaching and learning of mathematics in relation to students with learning disabilities.
