Abstract:In this study, pyrolysis of microalgal remnants was investigated for recovery of energy and nutrients. Chlorella vulgaris biomass was first solvent-extracted for lipid recovery then the remnants were used as the feedstock for fast pyrolysis experiments using a fluidized bed reactor at 500 °C. Yields of bio-oil, biochar, and gas were 53, 31, and 10 wt.%, respectively. Bio-oil from C. vulgaris remnants was a complex mixture of aromatics and straight-chain hydrocarbons, amides, amines, carboxylic acids, phenols, and other compounds with molecular weights ranging from 70 to 1200 Da. Structure and surface topography of the biochar were analyzed. The high inorganic content (potassium, phosphorous, and nitrogen) of the biochar suggests it may be suitable to provide nutrients for crop production. The bio-oil and biochar represented 57% and 36% of the energy content of the microalgae remnant feedstock, respectively.
Comparative study on pyrolysis of lignocellulosic and algal biomass using a thermogravimetric and a fixed-bed reactor

Abstract:Pyrolysis characteristics of four algal and lignocellulosic biomass samples were studied by using a thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA) and a fixed-bed reactor. The effects of pyrolysis temperature and biomass type on the yield and composition of pyrolysis products were investigated. The average activation energy for pyrolysis of biomass samples by FWO and KAS methods in this study were in the range of 211.09-291.19kJ/mol. CO2 was the main gas component in the early stage of pyrolysis, whereas H2 and CH4 concentrations increased with increasing pyrolysis temperature. Bio-oil from Chlorellavulgaris showed higher content of nitrogen containing compounds compared to lignocellulosic biomass. The concentration of aromatic organic compounds such as phenol and its derivatives were increased with increasing pyrolysis temperature up to 700°C. FTIR analysis results showed that with increasing pyrolysis temperature, the concentration of OH, CH, CO, OCH3, and CO functional groups in char decreased sharply.

Abstract:Microalgae Spirulina has good potential for bio-oil production. Therefore, kinetic and thermodynamic analysis of its pyrolysis process was performed. The activation energy values were estimated using both differential (109-340 kJ/mol) and integral (102-272 kJ/mol) isoconversional methods. Kinetic model was determined using master plot approach and the pyrolysis reaction appeared to transition between nucleation, diffusion and order-based kinetic models. Based on sigmoidal equations, a novel kinetic model equation was proposed which can define the pyrolysis process of algal biomass showing single differential thermogravimetric peak. The proposed kinetic triplet predicted the weight loss evolution quite precisely. Additionally, the thermodynamic feasibility of the reaction was examined based on enthalpy, entropy and Gibbs free energy. It was revealed that heat is consumed to make the raw sample reach a 'more orderly' state until a fractional conversion of 0.35. Moreover, bio-char and the remaining lipids at high temperature impede the reaction spontaneity towards the end.

Abstract:The aim of this work was to study fast pyrolysis of three microalgae species in a continuous bench-scale conical spouted bed reactor at 500 °C. Bio-gas, bio-oil and bio-char yields have been determined and characterized by using GC, GC/MS, elemental analyzer and SEM. Bio-oil was the main product obtained through pyrolysis of microalgae. The non-condensable gaseous stream is made up of mainly hydrogen, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide, apart from other light hydrocarbons detected in lower concentration, as are methane, ethane, ethylene, propane and propylene. The compounds identified in the bio-oil have been categorized into hydrocarbons, nitrogen containing compounds, ketones, alcohols, acids, lactones, phenols and aldehydes. The nitrogen and carbon contents of the microalgae bio-chars are higher than those for bio-chars derived from other biomasses. Pyrolysis improved the morphology and porous structure of microalgae. Finally, the mechanism involving microalgae pyrolysis has been approached and the main reaction pathways have been proposed.

Abstract:Climate change issues are calling for advanced methods to produce materials and fuels in a carbon–neutral and circular way. For instance, biomass pyrolysis has been intensely investigated during the last years. Here we review the pyrolysis of algal and lignocellulosic biomass with focus on pyrolysis products and mechanisms, oil upgrading, combining pyrolysis and anaerobic digestion, economy, and life cycle assessment. Products include oil, gas, and biochar. Upgrading techniques comprise hot vapor filtration, solvent addition, emulsification, esterification and transesterification, hydrotreatment, steam reforming, and the use of supercritical fluids. We examined the economic viability in terms of profitability, internal rate of return, return on investment, carbon removal service, product pricing, and net present value. We also reviewed 20 recent studies of life cycle assessment. We found that the pyrolysis method highly influenced product yield, ranging from 9.07 to 40.59% for oil, from 10.1 to 41.25% for biochar, and from 11.93 to 28.16% for syngas. Feedstock type, pyrolytic temperature, heating rate, and reaction retention time were the main factors controlling the distribution of pyrolysis products. Pyrolysis mechanisms include bond breaking, cracking, polymerization and re-polymerization, and fragmentation. Biochar from residual forestry could sequester 2.74 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent per ton biochar when applied to the soil and has thus the potential to remove 0.2–2.75 gigatons of atmospheric carbon dioxide annually. The generation of biochar and bio-oil from the pyrolysis process is estimated to be economically feasible.

Abstract:A comparative kinetic study on the pyrolysis of six algal and lignocellulosic biomasses was performed and six heating rates were employed to obtain the kinetic equations and analyze the compensation effect. Due to complexity, the whole pyrolysis process of algal biomass was divided into two reaction zones in which the analysis was carried out individually. The activation energies were first evaluated within the conversion range of 0.05 to 0.95, which were 125-147 kJ/mol and 113-138 kJ/mol for lignocellulosic biomass and zone-1 of algal biomass, respectively. Regression analysis was also conducted to determine the appropriate kinetic model. Moreover, Z(α) master plots suggested that the nucleation model was dominant at lower and higher temperatures for lignocellulosic biomass. Besides, the pre-exponential factor was calculated and a compensation effect between activation energies and pre-exponential factors was completely observed in zone-2 of algal biomass and partially seen in zone-1 of algal biomass and lignocellulosic biomass.

Abstract:The present work focused on the pyrolysis-based valorization of microalgae biomass residual for the generation of sustainable fuel and value-added chemicals. Key pyrolysis factors, including temperature, residence time, particle size, and heating rate, were modeled via an artificial neural network (ANN) and response surface methodology (RSM) models. The use of such an integrated technique was able to conquer the individual constraints of both modeling approaches. RSM model for H2-rich syngas demonstrated that the value; R2 = 0.99, minimum p = 0.00, and maximum F = 3877.16 has close relation among the statistical parameters. The ANN model for H2-rich syngas revealed that higher R2 = 0.9985 and lower RSME = 0.1038 were obtained for the training phase, while; the higher R2 and lower RSME values of 0.9862 and 0.2661 were estimated for the training phase hence showed a better agreement among the parameters. Optimum H2 production of 44.46 vol% was produced at temperature = 516.76 degrees C, residence time = 17.7 min, particle size = 0.23 mm, and heating rate = 17.37 degrees C/min. All the pyrolytic products have been characterized in detail and are recommended for high enduse. The GC/MS technique revealed that bio-oil was constituted of various organic complexes, which could be used as a substitute for hydrocarbon fuels after undergoing certain upgradation procedures (e.g., hydrotreating, hydrodeoxygenation, hydrodenitrogenation, and hydrocracking) and extracted into different chemicals. In addition, the biochar was characterized using the SEM technique, which also demonstrated its potential as fuel and in a variety of other applications. The study showed that de-fatted Chlorella sorokiniana residue (De-CR) could be efficiently employed to produce bio-energy precursors.

Abstract:Pyrolysis is one of the most popular methods for the thermal conversion of biomass-derived materials, which can be applied to produce valuable products such as biochar, bio-oil, and pyrolysis gas. However, this does not change the need for more precise data on the products obtained from such processes under different conditions, using different types of reactors or types of biomass material. Pyrolysis products can have a high energy value and have been extensively studied. In the presented research, three potential energy feedstocks from waste biomass, wheat cereal straw (CS), tobacco waste (TW), and furniture waste (FW) were comprehensively evaluated in terms of product yields, as well as the chemical composition of the volatile products of the pyrolysis process using the pyrolysis–gas chromatography–mass spectrometry technique and the chemical distribution of the products obtained under fixed-bed pyrolysis conditions. The obtained results were compared to data from the literature, which provided thorough information on the pyrolysis of biomass materials in diverse systems. The research identified the primary elements of the liquid fraction, such as N-compounds, furans, phenols, benzene, PAHs, aldehyde-ketone-alcohol, and organic acids, which were the main constituents of the liquid fraction, and the concentration of non-condensable components of gaseous products. The research discussed in this article provides a comprehensive approach to the thermal conversion of biomass materials, which, depending on their origin, processing conditions, and methodologies, can be utilised for more than only energy production.

Abstract:Background: Bioenergy attracts much attention due to the global demand for renewable and sustainable energy resources. Waste biomass feedstocks—date pits, coffee waste, and cow dung—require efficient and environmentally friendly waste-management technologies such as pyrolysis. Fast pyrolysis occurs at fast heating rates (10–100 °C/s), generates high bio-oil yields, and is the most widely used process for biofuel generation. The aim of the study is to compare the effect of pyrolysis between single, binary, and ternary feeds on thermal degradation behavior and bio-oil composition. Methods: Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) was conducted at 30 °C/min from room temperature to 850 °C to understand the thermal degradation behavior of the biomasses. A Pyroprobe® reactor—a micro-scale pyrolyzer—was used to conduct the fast pyrolysis at 500 °C with a heating rate of 10 °C/s, and the volatile contents were quantified using a gas chromatograph–mass spectrometer (GC/MS). Results: The (TGA) showed three main stages of decomposition following dehydration, devolatilization, and char degradation for the different single and multiple feeds. According to the identified compounds, the bio-oil components are broadly identified as aldehydes, amines, aliphatic, aromatics, alcohols, furans, ketones, and acids. The three single-biomass pyrolysis products have four compounds in common, acetic acid and ketone groups (acetic acid, 2-propanone, 1-hydroxy-, benzyl methyl ketone, and 1,2-cyclopentanedione). Conclusion: The bio-oil generated from the feeds comprises great potential for volatiles, diesel, and gasoline production with carbon atoms ranging from C2–C33. Future studies should focus on understanding the effect of procedural parameters, including blending ratio, temperature, and heating rates, on bio-oil composition. Additional molecular techniques should be employed to understand biomass components' reaction mechanisms to produce useful bio-oil products.

Abstract:A critical issue in the design of bubbling fluidized bed reactors for biomass fast pyrolysis is to maintain the bed at a constant level to ensure stable operation. In this work, a bubbling fluidized bed reactor was investigated to deal with this issue. The reactor consists of inner and outer tubes and enables in situ control of the fluidized-bed level in the inner-tube reactor with a mechanical method during biomass fast pyrolysis. The significant fraction of biochar produced from the fast pyrolysis in the inner-tube reactor was automatically removed through the annulus between the inner and outer tubes. The effect of pyrolysis temperature (426–528 °C) and feeding rate (0.8–1.8 kg/h) on the yield and characteristics of bio-oil, biochar, and gaseous products were examined at a 15 L/min nitrogen carrier gas flow rate for wood sawdust with a 0.5–1.0 mm particle size range as a feed. The bio-oil reached a maximum yield of 62.4 wt% on a dry basis at 440 °C, and then slowly decreased with increasing temperature. At least 79 wt% of bio-char byproduct was removed through the annulus and was found in the reactor bottom collector. The GC-MS analysis found phenolics to be more than 40% of the bio-oil products.

Abstract:Biomass utilization could relieve the pressure caused by conventional energy shortage and environmental pollution. Advantage should be taken of the abundant biomass in China as clean energy source to substitute for traditional fossil fuels. At present, flash pyrolysis appears to be an efficient method to produce high yields of liquids that could either be directly used as fuel or converted to other valuable chemicals. Experiments were carried out of pyrolyzing biomass particles in a hot dense fluidized bed of sand to obtain high-quality bio-oil. Among four kinds of biomass species adopted in our experiment, Padauk Wood had the best characteristics in producing bio-oil. GC-MS analysis showed bio-oil to be a complex mixture consisting of many compounds. Furthermore, an integrated model was proposed to reveal how temperature influences biomass pyrolysis. Computation indicated that biomass particles underwent rapid heating before pyrolysis.

Abstract:Nowadays, biomass is considered one of the key solutions for the energy transition as a renewable energy source. It can be converted by pyrolysis into bio-oil, which can be used for producing biofuels or valuable chemicals. However, bio-oils produced from pyrolysis contain present high oxygen content and it is necessary to use advanced pyrolysis processes to improve the quality of the bio-oils. In this study, three bio-oils produced by different pyrolysis processes: fast pyrolysis (FP), catalytic fast pyrolysis (CFP), and reactive catalytic fast pyrolysis (RCFP) were analyzed using different analytical techniques. A first bulk analysis was performed using proximate and ultimate analysis and gel permeation chromatography with refractive index and UV detection (GPC-UV-RI), which provided crucial information on the elemental composition and mass distribution of the bio-oil components. A deeper investigation at the molecular level was performed using Fourier Transform Ion Cyclotron Resonance Mass Spectrometry (FTICR MS) and High-Performance Thin Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) to determine detailed molecular classification of the bio-oil components. Finally, a fractionation method using flash chromatography (FC) was used to provide a more accurate chemical description. The obtained fractions were analyzed by two-dimensional "comprehensive" gas chromatography (GC×GC) coupled with mass spectrometry (MS) and flame ionization detector (FID), HPTLC, and FTICR MS. The results show that the bio-oils produced from FP and CFP are very similar chemically spoken. The bio-oil from RCFP has less oxygenated products and more unsaturated hydrocarbon species. Therefore, the bio-oil produced by the RCFP process was found to be the best process for producing oils with a low O/C ratio.

Abstract:The use of lignocellulosic waste as an energy source for substituting fossil fuels has attracted lots of attention, and pyrolysis has been established as an effective technology for this purpose. However, the utilization of bio-oil derived from non-catalytic pyrolysis faces certain constraints, making it impractical for direct application in advanced sectors. This study has focused on overcoming these challenges by employing fractional condensation of pyrolytic vapors at distinct temperatures. The potential of five types of sawdust for producing high-quality bio-oil through pyrolysis conducted with a bench-scale bubbling fluidized bed reactor was investigated for the first time. The highest yield of bio-oil (61.94 wt%) was produced using sample 3 (damaged timber). Remarkably, phenolic compounds were majorly gathered in the 1st and 2nd condensers at temperatures of 200 °C and 150 °C, respectively, attributing to their higher boiling points. Whereas, carboxylic acid , ketones, and furans were mainly collected in the 3rd (−5 °C) and 4th (−20 °C) condensers, having high water content in the range of 35.33%–65.09%. The separation of acidic nature compounds such as acetic acid in the 3rd and 4th was evidenced by its low pH in the range of 4–5, while the pH of liquid collected in the 1st and 2nd condensers exhibited higher pH (6–7). The well-separated bio-oil derived from biomass pyrolysis facilitates its wide usage in various applications, proposing a unique approach toward carbon neutrality. In particular, achieving efficient separation of phenolic compounds in bio-oil is important, as these compounds can undergo further upgrading to generate hydrocarbons and diesel fuel.

Abstract:In the present study, fast pyrolysis tests of microalgae were performed in the fluid bed reactor. The experiments were completed at temperature of 500°C with a heating rate of 600°Cs−1 and a sweep gas (N2) flow rate of 0.4m3h−1 and a vapour residence time of 2–3s. In comparison with the previous studies on slow pyrolysis from microalgae in an autoclave, a greater amount of high quality bio-oil can be directly produced from continuously processing microalgae feeds at a rate of 4gmin−1 in the present work, which has a potential for commercial application of large-scale production of liquid fuels. The liquid product yields of 18 and 24% from fast pyrolysis of Chllorella protothecoides and Microcystis aeruginosa were obtained. The saturated and polar fractions account for 1.14 and 31.17% of the bio-oils of microalgae on average, which are higher than those of bio-oil from wood. The H/C and O/C molar ratios of microalgae bio-oil are 1.7 and 0.3, respectively. The gas chromatograph analyses showed that the distribution of straight-chain alkanes of the saturated fractions from microalgae bio-oils were similar to diesel fuel. Bio-oil product from fast pyrolysis microalgae is characterized by low oxygen content with a higher heating value of 29MJ/kg, a density of 1.16kgl−1 and a viscosity of 0.10Pas. These properties of bio-oil of microalgae make it more suitable for fuel oil use than fast pyrolysis oils from lignocellulosic materials.

Abstract:Thermal co-processing of lignocellulosic and aquatic biomass, such as algae and shellfish waste, has shown synergistic effects in producing value-added energy products with higher process efficiency than the traditional method, highlighting the importance of scaling up to pilot-scale operations. This article discusses the design and operation of pilot-scale reactors for torrefaction, pyrolysis, and gasification, as well as the key parameters of co-processing biomass into targeted and improved quality products for use as fuel, agricultural application, and environmental remediation. Techno-economic analysis reveals that end product selling price, market dynamics, government policies, and biomass cost are crucial factors influencing the sustainability of thermal co-processing as a feasible approach to utilize the biomass. Because of its simplicity, pyrolysis allows greater energy recovery, while gasification has the highest net present value (profitability). Integration of liquefaction, hydrothermal, and fermentation pre-treatment technology has the potential to increase energy efficiency while reducing process residues.

Abstract:In the future, renewable energy technologies will have a significant role in catering to energy security concerns and a safe environment. Among the various renewable energy sources available, biomass has high accessibility and is considered a carbon-neutral source. Pyrolysis technology is a thermo-chemical route for converting biomass to many useful products (biochar, bio-oil, and combustible pyrolysis gases). The composition and relative product yield depend on the pyrolysis technology adopted. The present review paper evaluates various types of biomass pyrolysis. Fast pyrolysis, slow pyrolysis, and advanced pyrolysis techniques concerning different pyrolyzer reactors have been reviewed from the literature and are presented to broaden the scope of its selection and application for future studies and research. Slow pyrolysis can deliver superior ecological welfare because it provides additional bio-char yield using auger and rotary kiln reactors. Fast pyrolysis can produce bio-oil, primarily via bubbling and circulating fluidized bed reactors. Advanced pyrolysis processes have good potential to provide high prosperity for specific applications. The success of pyrolysis depends strongly on the selection of a specific reactor as a pyrolyzer based on the desired product and feedstock specifications.

Abstract:Finding alternatives to fossil fuels is extremely important for economic and environmental considerations. Biomass pyrolysis stands out as an efficient method for generating fuels and chemical intermediates. This study explored the influence of wood particle size (ranging from 1 to 3 cm) and pyrolysis temperature (ranging from about 300 to 480 °C) on the process. Characterization of wood residues utilized energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) to comprehend surface morphology and resultant biochar structure. Results revealed a significant temperature-dependent impact on pyrolysis product concentrations. Biomass composition analysis indicates lignin, hemicellulose, extractive contents, and cellulose percentages at 11.23%, 39%, 2.15%, and 47.62% mass/mass, respectively. Reduction in particle size to less than 2 mm enhances heat transfer, elevating overall bio-oil production. Major bio-oil components comprise phenolics, acids, alcohols, aldehydes, and ketones. Optimal conditions are identified at a wood particle size of 1 cm and a heating temperature of 480 °C. For every 1.0 kg of wood biomass residues, bio-oil, syngas, and biochar yields are 0.38 kg, 0.22 kg, and 0.4 kg, respectively. Notably, the agreement between Aspen Plus simulation and experimental findings underscored the robustness of the study.

Abstract:Herein we report the fast pyrolysis of dried, ground Scenedesmus sp. at two different reactor scales. Pyrolysis was performed at 480 °C and 1 bar in both an isothermal spouted bed reactor and a dynamic pyrolysis-GC/MS unit, each with 2 s vapor residence times. Bio-oil products were characterized on the basis of GC-MS, simulated distillation GC, elemental analysis, calorific content and total acid number. The ratio of crude oil: char obtained from the spouted bed reactor was 3.76 by weight, the average calorific content of the oil being 18.4 MJ/kg. The average total acid number (68 mg KOH/g) was lower than typical bio-oil produced via wood pyrolysis. Simulated distillation results indicated that a significant proportion of the oil corresponded to the boiling range typical for heavy gas oil (343 °C–524 °C). Elemental analysis showed the oil contained an average of 27.6 wt.% oxygen and 8.6 wt.% nitrogen, the relatively high nitrogen content being a consequence of the high protein content of the algae. According to GC-MS data, the oil consisted of various hydrocarbons as well as oxygenated and nitrogenous species, including indoles, fatty acids and amides. Pyrolysis-GC-MS was also performed on Scenedesmus sp. in order to provide insights into the nature of the primary pyrolysis products.

Comparative Experiments on Recycling of Oil Sludge, Oil Shale and Biomass waste in a Continuous Rotating Pyrolysis Reactor

Abstract:Oil sludge, oil shale and biomass waste were respectively pyrolized in a 1-2kg/h continuous tubular reactor with the internal rotating paddles. For all the experiments, the reactor was kept at 550�� in an argon atmosphere with -3mbar internal pressure, but with different input processes depending on the materials. All pyrolytic products (gases, liquids, solid residues) were analysed in detail. The carbon content of the solid residue from oil sludge is no more than 2%, much lower than that of the other two materials. The solid residue of oil shale and biomass has the potential to be utilized or treated in later processes, such as gasification and combustion. Biomass produced the most CO2 and CO than others, about 37.1% and 25.7% respectively. Although oil sludge produced the most hydrocarbons (>50%), it seemed relatively the worst in producing H2 and CH4, which was attributed to its mixture of oils with a wide distillation range. Furthermore, different pyrolysis behaviours of the materials and various characterizations of the products were discussed, according to the distinct compositional and structural difference of the organic matter.

Abstract:The performance of fixed and fluidized bed reactors in the steam reforming of biomass fast pyrolysis volatiles was compared, with especial attention paying to the differences observed in catalysts deactivation. The experiments were carried out in continuous regime in a bench scale unit provided with a conical spouted bed for the pyrolysis step. They were carried out on a Ni-Ca/Al2O3 commercial catalyst and under optimum conditions determined in previous studies, i.e., pyrolysis temperature 500 °C, reforming temperature 600 °C and a steam/biomass ratio of 4. Moreover, the influence of space time was analysed in both reforming reactors. The fixed bed reactor showed higher initial conversion and H2 yield, as it allowed attaining a H2 yield higher than 90 % with a space time of 10 gcat min g vol−1. However, a space time of 15 gcat min g vol−1 was required in the fluidized bed to obtain a similar H2 yield. Moreover, the fixed bed also led to lower catalyst deactivation. Catalyst deactivation was mainly related to coke deposition, and higher coke contents were observed in the catalysts used in the fluidized bed reactor (1.2 mgCOKE gcat−1 gbiomass−1) than those in the fixed bed one (0.6 mgCOKE gcat−1 gbiomass−1).
