Abstract:Recently, blockchain has been increasingly applied to low‐carbon supply chains, enabling consumers to track production process of low‐carbon products, thereby improving brand awareness and expanding the market. However, do the operation and construction costs of blockchain come at the expense of squeezing resources originally allocated for research and development (R&D) of carbon emission reduction (CER) or reducing firms profits? Given the varying capacities of different types of firms to bear the costs of blockchain in the process of R&D of CER, this paper considers two categories of firms, superior brand firms and inferior brand firms, and studies the impact of blockchain usage on CER and profits. Research shows that the usage of blockchain is not necessarily beneficial to CER and profits enhancement. Consumers' trust and low‐carbon preference, brand awareness, blockchain operation and construction costs, and R&D difficulty of CER are key factors. Superior brand firms can improve CER level and profits through blockchain when R&D difficulty is low and consumers' trust is high or when R&D difficulty is high but consumers' low‐carbon preferences and brand awareness are high. Inferior brand firms can improve CER level and profits through blockchain when R&D difficulty is low and consumers' trust is high or when R&D difficulty is high but brand awareness is low. This study provides strategic insights for brand firms considering the usage of blockchain in their CER initiatives, highlighting the importance of aligning blockchain integration with firm‐specific characteristics and market conditions to achieve both environmental and profit objectives.

Abstract:The significant environmental impact of buildings during their lifecycle has made it a critical area to address the global climate crisis. However, due to the involvement of multiple industrial sectors, a large number of related parties, and the complexity of environmental information flows in the whole lifecycle of buildings, the effectiveness of the traditional centralized management approach is limited, and it is necessary to adopt more advanced management technology tools. With its decentralized, transparent, and secure characteristics, blockchain technology has triggered various applications in several industries, as well as in the field of building environmental sustainability. Using bibliometric and content analysis, this paper comprehensively reviews the current state of research on blockchain technology in the field of building environmental sustainability. A total of 128 articles were reviewed, revealing that blockchain technology has been used to address various types of environmental problems in multiple stages of the building lifecycle, including building material production, construction, operation, and demolition phases, etc. It is shown that blockchain technology can already effectively improve the use of renewable energy and reduce overall energy consumption during the building operation phase, while the great potential for solving other environmental issues, such as the management of building embodied carbon emissions, needs to be further explored. This paper also explores potential research opportunities and future directions based on current gaps and limitations, presenting several critical topics from the perspective of building lifecycle and practice support. This review helps related researchers gain insights into the research frontier and future direction.

Abstract:Stakeholders' pressure for environmental sustainability asks firms to develop ecosystem-based business models (EBMs) driven by a disruptive technology that strategically prioritizes green innovation. Given the infancy of the relevant issues, there is scarce empirical evidence addressing how blockchain technology (BT) as a typical disruptive technology triggers the formation of EBMs with higher levels of platformisation and stakeholder diversity. To address this need, from the dynamic capability view, we identify value appropriation capability (VAC) as a vital catalyst translating BT into realizing green innovation in EBMs. Our results indicate that BT and VAC positively affect green innovation performance, while VAC also mediates the BT-green innovation relationship in EBMs. The main contribution is to offer new insight into the mechanisms between disruptive technology and the evolution towards EBMs through the lens of a previously under-researched dynamic capability, VAC. We also provide feasible, practical guidance for organizations to inspire green innovation and establish sustainable EBMs.

Abstract:This study considers a firm selling only green products or both ordinary and green ones to consumers with or without blockchain technology. We find that the profitability of adoption of this technology for the firm relies heavily on consumers' environmental awareness. It should be adopted when consumers have relatively high environmental awareness. Here, the selling price, sales, and greenness level of green products are relatively higher compared to those in the case without blockchain. Finally, the firm only sells green products after blockchain adoption when consumers' environmental awareness level is relatively high or the development cost coefficient of green products is relatively small.

Abstract:Disclosing carbon emissions in Scope 3 is essential for mitigating pollution and the associated environmental damage, and blockchain can enhance the disclosure. However, the effect of blockchain on Scope 3 carbon disclosure remains unclear due to a lack of empirical evidence. This paper investigates the value of blockchain for Scope 3 carbon disclosure and examines whether this value can be strengthened by integrating data processing technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), cloud computing, and big data analytics (BDA). Drawing upon the coordination theory, we posit that blockchain as a recording and tracing technology can improve the coordination among supply chain members on collecting carbon emissions data, thereby facilitating firms' Scope 3 carbon disclosure. Furthermore, data processing technologies enable efficient utilization and management of the collected data, potentially coordinating with blockchain to enhance Scope 3 carbon disclosure. We test these relationships using regression analysis based on a sample of 422 observations for Chinese listed firms during 2021 and 2022. The results show that blockchain adoption is positively associated with a firm's Scope 3 carbon disclosure. In addition, adopting each of the three data processing technologies-AI, cloud computing, and BDA-further strengthens the positive relationship. This study contributes to academic knowledge and evidence on blockchain and sustainable supply chain management with practical suggestions for managing carbon emissions at the supply chain level through the combined adoption of blockchain and data processing technologies.

Abstract:Digital finance is pivotal in a company's environmentally responsible practices. Given this, we examine the impact of digital finance on firm's carbon emissions using a fixed-effect model using A-share listed companies data from 2011 to 2020. The results report that digital finance significantly dampens a firm's carbon emissions, and a similar effect is observed in the breadth of coverage and digital finance depth of use. Distinguishing the characteristics of firms' samples reveals that the carbon abatement effect resulting from digital finance is more evident in non-state-owned enterprises, remains significant in capital-intensive, technology-intensive industries as well as in manufacturing, yet is insignificant in labour-intensive and non-manufacturing industries. Promoting environmental, social and governance , facilitating digital transformation and incentivizing green innovation are significant digital finance-driven carbon abatement mechanisms. Digital finance's carbon-cutting effect is amplified further by financial regulation constraints and natural resource constraints.

Abstract:Environmental regulation becomes essential to corporate technological innovation amid increasing concern with environmental issues. However, a clear understanding of the specific role of environmental regulation’s ex-post effectiveness is lacking. Using the panel data of Chinese A-share listed firms during 2011–2018, we examine the effects of environmental regulation on corporate technological innovation. The results indicate that environmental regulation negatively affects corporate technological innovation. With regard to digital finance, it benefits for corporate technological innovation and positively moderates the relationship between environmental regulation and corporate technological innovation. The heterogeneity analysis suggests that the negative impact of environmental regulation over technological innovation is much significant for small-scale firms, western-region firms, and firms with strong financing constraints. Furthermore, the moderating role of digital finance is more significant for firms with strong financing constraints and heavy polluting firms. We also verify the robustness of the regression results. The current study provides both theoretical support and reference to improve corporate technological innovation and promote high-quality economic development through adopting reasonable policy measures.

Abstract:Purpose The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of blockchain technology on firms’ operational efficiency in the context of China. Design/methodology/approach The authors use panel data for blockchain-based companies listed on stock exchanges in China (Shanghai, Shenzhen and Hong Kong) between 2014 and 2018. The operational efficiency of firms that deploy blockchain technology is evaluated using ordinary least squares and system generalized method of moments estimation. Findings Results suggest that companies’ current year performance exceeds the previous year performance because of blockchain deployment in firms’ operations. Firms with higher financial leverage and return on assets reap more benefits from blockchain. Larger and older firms benefit less from blockchain implementation. Stochastic frontier estimation suggests that, on average, firms attain a 57.76 per cent technical efficiency level, or, put differently, they operate 42.24 per cent below their maximum level of potential output. Originality/value Blockchain can benefit firms in terms of consensus, security and trust, spurring the evolution of a new form of organizational dynamics. This study explores the theory of transactional cost analysis under blockchain technology. In addition, this study hypothesizes and empirically demonstrates the significant impacts of blockchain technology on corporations’ operational efficiency, using audited, externally reported financial data. Industry professionals can reap benefits from this research by noticing the magnitude of changes in firms’ financial parameters attributable to blockchain adoption.

Abstract:As a new disruptive technology, blockchain is widely regarded as one of the most promising digital technologies. Existing research, however, offers limited empirical evidence of the impact of blockchain technology on corporate business processes. We conduct empirical analysis based on the panel data of A-Share listed firms in China. We find that blockchain investment significantly enhances operational business processes and supply chain management. This finding is robust to a battery of robustness checks. We also find that the impact of blockchain investment is more substantial when blockchain implementation enters a mature stage. Additional cross-sectional tests show that the impact of blockchain investment mainly concentrates on firms with higher operational complexity, better capability to adopt new technology, and larger innovation inputs. Overall, based on the results of the empirical analysis, this paper provides significant implications for firms to construct blockchain projects in the future.

Abstract:In our study, we delve deep into the dynamics of blockchain markets and their ecological ramifications while also shedding light on the invaluable insights gleaned from a risk spillover analysis involving green finance investments, thereby broadening the spectrum of opportunities for portfolio diversification. Employing a robust framework grounded in copulas theory, we meticulously scrutinize the intricate interplay of risk transmission and the dependence structure of green financial products in relation to the blockchain market index. Our investigation, guided by the application of VaR and CoVaR measures, has unearthed compelling findings. We have discerned that the price fluctuations in the clean energy sector have wielded a substantial influence on the blockchain industry, particularly in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Remarkably, our analysis reveals an absence of spillover effects between the blockchain and green bond markets, underscoring the tangible diversification advantages that investors can harness. This becomes pivotal in safeguarding their assets from the inherent risks associated with blockchain investments. Furthermore, we have conducted a rigorous regression analysis to uncover the nuanced relationship between the blockchain's extreme downside risk factor and climate change risk. Notably, the robust coefficient associated with the climate change index serves as a clarion call to investors, environmental organizations, and policymakers alike. It beckons them to accord greater attention to environmental considerations when venturing into the blockchain markets, emphasizing the pressing need for environmentally responsible investments and policy decisions.

Abstract:PurposeBlockchain is a distributed ledger technology that uses cryptography to ensure transmission and access security, which provides solutions to numerous challenges to complex supply networks. The purpose of this paper is to empirically test the impact of blockchain implementation on shareholder value varying from internal and external complexity from the complex adaptive systems (CASs) perspective. It further explores how business diversification, supply chain (SC) concentration and environmental complexity affect the relationship between blockchain implementation and shareholder value.Design/methodology/approachBased on 138 blockchain implementation announcements of listed companies on the Chinese A-share stock market, the authors use event study methodology to evaluate the impact of blockchain implementation on shareholder value.FindingsThe results show that blockchain implementation has a positive impact on shareholder value, and this impact will be moderated by business diversification, SC concentration and environmental complexity. In addition, environmental complexity exerts a moderating effect on SC concentration. In the post hoc analysis, the authors further explore the impact of blockchain implementation on long-term operational performance.Originality/valueThis is the first research empirically examining the effect of blockchain implementation on shareholder value varying from internal and external complexity from the CASs perspective. This paper provides evidence of the different effects of blockchain implementation on short- and long-term performance. It adds to the interdisciplinary research of information systems (IS) and operations management (OM).

Abstract:This research examines the impact of environmental performance on firm value, applying the event study methodology to Newsweek’s ‘Green Rankings’ announcement of 2012 for large US firms. Specifically, it analyzes the impact of the absolute green score and green rank of firms on their performance in the stock market. We found that investors perceive the announcement as positive news, leading to significant positive standardized cumulative abnormal returns (SCARs). After controlling for industry‐ and firm‐specific effects, we observed that firms with repeated green rankings for enhancing environmental performance showed significantly higher SCARs than those with either reduced or unchanged environmental performance. In addition, the environmental impact score measuring environmental damage from a firm's operational activities was found to be the most influential factor in improving the firm's value. Our findings are beneficial to managers in allocating resources to different types of environmental initiative, and provide valuable insight for sustainable environmental investment. Abstract:An overview of blockchain fundamentals and its potential benefits for sustainability is provided. The role of expertise as an intermediary on the blockchain to drive transparency and accountability is examined. This research examines the potential of blockchain technology in the field of economic management and to drive future sustainable development in emerging companies, which are referred to as hidden champions. This study addresses the need for transparent and responsive practices that promote social stability, economic growth, and environmental sustainability. The goals are to analyze economic functions, investigate the formation of appropriate economic patterns, facilitate equitable distribution, and support environmental protection efforts. The research method includes case studies and theoretical frameworks to collect relevant data. The results emphasize the importance of balancing competing interests, promoting security, and strengthening inclusive decision-making processes. This study emphasizes the intersection between economic development and environmental protection and highlights the role of sustainability criteria in guiding land use practices. Employing a systematic literature review and content analysis, the research scrutinizes peer-reviewed journals, industry reports, and case studies to elucidate blockchain's impact on sustainable financial practices. The methodology focuses on identifying the benefits, challenges, and strategic implications of blockchain applications in green finance, guided by specific inclusion and exclusion criteria to ensure the relevance and quality of the literature analyzed. Key findings reveal that blockchain technology significantly contributes to the transparency and efficiency of green finance mechanisms, such as green bonds and sustainability-linked loans, by providing immutable, transparent, and secure transaction records. This technological integration fosters trust among stakeholders, including investors, regulators, and beneficiaries, and addresses traditional challenges faced by green finance, such as lack of transparency and high transaction costs. The study underscores blockchain's role as a catalyst for change in the future of green finance, advocating for the development of supportive regulatory frameworks and international collaboration to fully harness its potential. Abstract:In the era of Industry 5.0, innovation in blockchain technology is expected to have a significant impact on energy efficiency and carbon emissions, especially in hybrid energy systems. This paper has obtained the innovation data on the blockchain patent of listed companies in China from 2010 to 2022 by machine learning and text analysis methodology of large language model. On this basis, the relationship between the enterprises' blockchain technology innovation and the intensity of fossil energy consumption has been discussed. The study found that (1) the enterprises' blockchain technology innovation is able to reduce the intensity of fossil energy consumption, and this conclusion remains valid via controlling for endogeneity and upon the completion of robustness test. (2) In terms of the mechanism, the enterprises' blockchain technology innovation can achieve energy transition by reducing the cost of internal control, strengthening external supervision, improving the efficiency of resource allocation and strengthening the channels of supply chain management. (3) Further research has found that the energy effects as a result of blockchain technology innovation help to improve operational efficiency and lower the level of carbon emission. Our research provides scientific support for breaking the "technological energy paradox" in the field of energy economy while providing empirical evidence of "blockchain carbon reduction" for technologies such as blockchain BaaS alliance, cross-operator network spectrum, and shared base stations that will be applied on a large scale in the Industry 5.0 Era.
Effect of blockchain technology initiatives on firms' market value

Abstract:Despite blockchain's potential to transform corporations by providing new ways of organizing business processes and handling information, extant research pays inadequate attention to how and under what conditions blockchain technology provides additional financial value for shareholders. Drawing on the efficient market hypothesis and signaling theory, we examined the relationship between firms' blockchain use, development announcements, and stock market reactions. We used the event study methodology to analyze a sample of blockchain projects initiated by US firms between 2016 and 2019. The sample contains 114 firm-event observations. The findings show that the average abnormal return over a 2 days event period (including the day of the announcement and the day after the announcement) was positive. This positive stock market reaction is even more substantial when firms announce blockchain projects that focus on saving cost or time. Our findings also indicate that blockchain announcements tend to elicit more positive market reactions from smaller firms. We analyzed 249 firm-event observations containing firms from around the world and conclude that blockchain technology has a non-significant long-term impact on operating performance. The contingency approach adopted in our research provides advice for selecting the right mix of blockchain investment initiatives that is most suitable for a given organizational context.
Can blockchain innovation promote total factor productivity? Evidence from Chinese-listed firms

Abstract:Although the importance of digital economy development has gradually been attached, blockchain technology has been widely questioned in China because it originated from bitcoin, which has been abandoned in China. Can blockchain innovation promote total factor productivity? Based on the blockchain patent data of Chinese-listed firms from 2012 to 2020, we show that blockchain innovation activities can improve the total factor productivity (TFP) of enterprises and verify its robustness using instrumental variable approach, system GMM and Heckman's two-step selection method. Results of mediation effect model show that enterprises' blockchain innovation activities mainly improve TFP through three channels: alleviating financing constraints, reducing supply chain concentration and inefficient investment. Heterogeneity analysis shows that electronic digital data processing blockchain patents have the highest practical value, while financial blockchain innovation inhibits the improvement of TFP in China. Blockchain innovation can bring positive effects on the TFP of manufacturing enterprises and leasing and business service enterprises. The increase in TFP of leasing and business service enterprises brought by blockchain innovation is nearly 70 times that of the baseline regression. We further provide blockchain innovation development suggestions for Chinese government based on these conclusions.

Abstract:Abstract China has emerged as the world’s second-largest economy due to its rapid industrial expansion and phenomenal economic growth in recent decades. Though, this exponential economic turnaround has been fueled by widespread energy consumption, making China among the largest pollutant emitters in the world. Chinese enterprises have come under greater scrutiny and the government has mandated Chinese companies to undertake environmental protection investment. However, little is known that how these mandatory environmental investments affect Chinese firms’ ability to undertake R&D expenditures. This study employs data of China’s A-share listed firms during 2008-2016 to examine the nexus between environmental protection investment and corporate innovation. Our findings conjecture the crowding-out effects of environmental investments on enterprise innovation-related expenditures. Furthermore, additional empirical testing reveals that R&D undertakings of state-owned and politically connected firms are not affected by environmental investments. Likewise, corporate innovation activities are not negatively influenced by environmental investments in polluting industries. The study findings offer fresh insights to regulators, corporate managers, and stakeholders. Our results are robust to alternate econometric specifications and alternate variable specifications.

Using a multiple case studies methodology, our research article aims to answer the research question (RQ): How can Blockchain enable new SBMs and support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)? We present 20 business stories extracted from a combined analysis of the databases coinmarketcap.com and icobench.com, demonstrating how Blockchain can be used for environmental management. Notably, our analysis finds out four broad research clusters related to (i) smart energy management, (ii) climate change, (iii) waste management, and (iv) sustainable production. Mainly, an actual application of Blockchain toward SBMs is related to supply chain cost reduction. Finally, the research includes investments and their social scalability with Blockchain. Then, the final research cluster discovers social and proof sustainability. This study adds to the empirical literature evidence of SBMs offering a connection with the SDGs.
