Abstract:Hydrogenation is a versatile chemical process with significant applications in various industries, including food production, petrochemical refining, pharmaceuticals, and hydrogen carriers/safety. Traditional hydrogenation of aromatics, hindered by the stable π-conjugated phenyl ring structures, typically requires high temperatures and pressures, making ambient hydrogenation a grand challenge. Herein, we introduce a PdPtRuCuNi high entropy alloy (HEA) nanocatalyst, achieving an exceptional 100% hydrogenation of carbon-carbon unsaturated bonds, including alkynyl and phenyl groups, in solid 1,4-bis(phenylethynyl)benzene (DEB) at 25 °C under ≤1 bar H2 and solventless condition. This results in a threefold higher hydrogen uptake for DEB-contained composites compared to conventional Pd catalysts, which can only hydrogenate the alkynyl groups with a ~ 27% conversion of DEB. Our experimental results, complemented by theoretical calculations, reveal that PdPtRu alloy is highly active and crucial in enabling the hydrogenation of phenyl groups, while all five elements work synergistically to regulate the reaction rate. Remarkably, this newly developed catalyst also achieves nearly 100% reactivity for ambient hydrogenation of a broad range of aromatics, suggesting its universal effectiveness. Our research uncovers a novel material platform and catalyst design principle for efficient and general hydrogenation. The multi-element synergy in HEA also promises unique catalytic behaviors beyond hydrogenation applications.

Abstract:Aromatic hydrogenation is one of the important classes of hydrotreating reactions and its thermodynamics play a significant role in achieving the product specifications. This article comprehensively reviews the available experimental thermodynamic data as well as the methods to estimate the data for aromatic hydrogenation. The data indicate that aromatic hydrogenation reactions are thermodynamically more favorable at about 200°C–250°C and moderate pressures (3–5 MPa). Industrially, however, these reactions are carried out at 300°C–375°C to have reasonable kinetics. Hence there is a need for highly active catalysts, which can facilitate significant kinetics of hydrotreating reactions at around 200°C–250°C.

Abstract:A convenient and highly selective platinum nanocatalyst was developed for the hydrogenation of nitro aromatics into the corresponding anilines at room temperature under ambient pressure. The platinum catalyst was highly active and selective for the hydrogenation of nitro aromatic compounds. Reducible groups such as aldehyde, ketone and nitrile were untouched during the hydrogenation of the corresponding nitro compounds, and the corresponding anilines were obtained quantitatively.

Abstract:We report the synthesis of a variety of stable neutral homoaromatic molecules. The homoaromatic character is supported by bond length analysis (from crystal structure analysis data) and spectroscopic characteristics in NMR experiments. The influence of substitution on these homoannulenes is investigated and their reactivity with electrophiles is shown. First approaches to further functionalization via cross-coupling are demonstrated. The present work lays out a general approach to stable neutral homoaromatic hydrocarbon molecules. Abstract:Halogenated aromatic anilines are series of crucial intermediates for the synthesis of pigments, medicines and pesticides in the fine chemistry. However, efficient inhibition of undesired dehalogenation is difficult to achieve in the commonly used batch reactors. Although employing continuous flow technology and modified catalysts could alleviate dehalogenation, obtaining high selectivity of halogenated aromatic anilines especially for brominated aromatic amines and iodine aromatic amines is still challenging. In this study, a continuous flow system based on micro-packed bed reactor was developed and a kinetic model of the hydrogenation of halogenated nitrobenzene was established. Kinetic parameters for the reductions of p-chloronitrobenzene, p-bromonitrobenzene and p-iodonitrobenzene were acquired and the kinetic model exhibited good fit for the transformation of each substance. Moreover, the accuracy of kinetic model was validated by the comparison with the values in literature. The obtained kinetic model offered helpful information for the process optimization of hydrogenation of halogenated nitroaromatics in continuous flow system. (C) 2022 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:One-step hydroxylation of aromatics is an intriguing topic in catalysis for its useful materials in industry and organic synthesis for more than a century. This review systematically outlines the progress of catalytic hydroxylation of aromatics in liquid/homogeneous phase systems with the emphasis on the active species and reaction mechanisms based on the different active center of atoms such as iron, vanadium, copper and palladium since 1990's. Developing a two-phase mimicbiological catalytic system seems to be primary trend by synthesis a kind of complex containing N, O ligands for liquid aromatic hydroxylation to overcome the drawbacks of traditional catalytic systems. Several active species of hydroxo radical, high value metal oxo and peroxo and hydroxo as well as mechanism of radicals and complexes were suggested via using advanced analytic technologies. Though some of these mechanisms are still disputable, this review could offer a more thorough consideration of mechanisms of hydroxylation. for understanding some reactions more profoundly.
Hydrogenation of Inert Aromatic Compounds under Mild Conditions Catalyzed by Confined Trimetal Sites in Porous Metal Silicate Materials

Abstract:Complete hydrogenation of aromatic compounds is an important subject in various industry fields. However, due to the high stabilization energy of aromatic compounds resulting from their high aromaticity and non-polarity, the hydrogenation reaction is usually performed under harsh reaction conditions in the presence of noble metalbased catalysts. We report herein a porous metal silicate (PMS) material PMS-58, which consists of Cu, Ce and Co trimetal active sites, demonstrating high catalytic activity and selectivity in hydrogenating of a series of aromatic compounds under mild conditions (60 degrees C and 0.5 MPa H2). PMS-58 is superior to the previously reported nonnoble metal-based catalysts and could be favorably compared to noble metal-based catalysts. The unique catalytic properties of PMS-58 are derived from the synergistic work of trimetal sites with Ce species serving as strong Lewis acid sites for dissociation of dihydrogen, Co species stabilizing Cu(I) species, and Cu(I) species playing a crucial role in activating aromatic rings. Therefore, this work provides a new approach in developing highly efficient non-noble metal catalysts for complete hydrogenation of arenes under mild conditions, which could be applied in removal of aromatic compounds in petroleum products.
Solvent-scissors overcoming inert hydrogen bonding enable efficient oxidation of aromatic hydrocarbons under atmospheric oxygen

Abstract:Hydrogen bonding is a fascinating interaction that controls the outcomes of chemical reactions. However, overcoming the strong deactivation arising from alterations in the polarity and electronic properties of the reactants and intermediates remains a challenge. Herein, we proposed a "solvent-scissors" strategy for overcoming the inert hydrogen bonding, enabling the efficient aerobic oxidation of methyl aromatics into aromatic acids under atmospheric oxygen at 25–45 °C. The hydrogen bonds between the key intermediate, benzaldehyde (PhCHO), and hexafluoroisopropanol (HFIP) were reconstructed using solvent-scissors (acetic acid (HOAc), ethyl acetate, ethyl chloroacetate, and methyl chloroacetate), which promoted the release of free PhCHO from its inert hydrogen-bonded state and enabled the one-step oxidation of toluene to benzoic acid under mild conditions. The standard Gibbs free energy changes (Δ G 0 ) representing the proton acceptance capability of the solvent were of the same order of magnitude as the turnover number (TON) (capacity for promoting benzaldehyde oxidation). This approach affords remarkable benzoic acid selectivity (98.7%) with high toluene conversion (96.8%) at 45 °C within 4 h under 0.1 MPa O 2 using NHPI/metal acetate/HFIP-HOAc. This strategy opens up a new avenue for regulating hydrogen bonding in a wider range of applications for the planning and development of synthesis protocols. Graphical A "solvent-scissors" strategy is proposed for overcoming the inert hydrogen bonding between the key intermediate benzaldehyde and hexafluoroisopropanol and enabling efficient oxidation of toluene (96.8% conversion), affording 98.7% selectivity for benzoic acid at 45 °C under atmospheric oxygen using NHPI/metal acetate /HFIP-HOAc. Abstract:The study investigated hydrogenation of aromatics as liquid organic hydrogen carriers over unsupported NiMoS catalysts synthesized in situ by dispersion followed by high-temperature decomposition/sulfidation of oil-soluble precursors of the active component in a hydrocarbon medium. The separation of hydrogen from gas mixtures via its chemical storage was demonstrated. The hydrogenation of naphthalene, its monomethylated derivatives, and anthracene was investigated with various component ratios in the gas mixtures. Specifically, the effects of temperature, pressure, reaction time, and the presence of water under water gas shift reaction (WGSR) conditions on the substrate conversion and product selectivity were evaluated. When carrying out the process in syngas atmosphere (CO : H 2 = 1 : 1) at 340°C and 5 MPa, the aromatics conversion and the hydrogen saturation were found to decrease in the following order: anthracene > 2-methylnaphthalene ≈ naphthalene >> 1-methylnaphthalene. In addition to steric hindrances in the sorption of substrate molecules (due to the presence of substituents in the benzene ring), the structure of conformational isomers of intermediate molecules has a major effect on the hydrogenation reaction rate. Dispersed NiMoS catalysts were found to be active in the hydrogenation of 2-methylnaphthalene, achieving at least 90% conversion to the corresponding tetralins (with the 6-methyltetralin to 2-methyltetralin ratio ranging between 1.5 : 1 and 1.7 : 1) at 320–360oC and a total pressure of 5 MPa with 25–50 vol % carbon monoxide and methane in the gas mixture. Under WGSR conditions (10 wt % water, CO : H 2 = 1 : 1, total pressure 5 MPa), at least 1.2 wt % sulfur as a precursor of the sulfiding agent is needed (at molybdenum content of 0.06 wt %) to ensure in situ regeneration of the catalyst and its transition into the active sulfide form.

Abstract:The most prevalent strategies for preparing halogenated alkyl aromatics face one remarkable challenge: low regioselectivity. Therefore, the highly regioselective halogenation of alkyl arenes is still an unsolved problem. Herein, a highly regioselective halogenation of alkyl aromatics through nitromethane-assisted Bronsted acid catalysis is disclosed. Under the mild reaction conditions, a wide diversity of halogenated alkyl aromatics is obtained in high yields with excellent regioselectivity. The hydrogen bonding of protonic acid with the solvent nitromethane promotes this transformation.

Abstract:Abstract Partial hydrogenation of unsaturated hydrocarbons comprises an important family of reactions that are applied in many industrial sectors. Understanding the hydrogenation of polyunsatured and polyunsaturated compounds on heterogeneous catalysts at its molecular level remains a challenging milestone to fine‐tune the product distribution. Our study presents a detailed mechanistic analysis of the gas phase hydrogenation of vinylacetylene (1‐butene‐3‐yne) and valylene (2‐methyl‐1‐butene‐3‐yne) over palladium and copper catalysts. These two metals are selected owing to their pronounced differences in continuous flow catalytic tests at ambient pressure. The chemoselectivity, regioselectivity, isomerization, and oligomerization patterns measured in a broad range of feed hydrogen/hydrocarbon ratios are rationalized by density functional theory simulations. An extended Brønsted–Evans–Polanyi relationship for both substrates and active metals is found for the hydrogenation processes. The identified factors that govern selectivity are similar to those identified for smaller C 2 and C 3 compounds and, thus, a means of systematization to other polyunsaturated compounds is opened up.

Abstract:The semi‐hydrogenation of terminal alkynes is achieved with sodium borohydride (NaBH4) as the reductant and palladium nanowires (PdNWs) as the catalysts under ambient conditions. The reaction proceeds smoothly in the presence of only 0.32 mol% of PdNWs, giving the hydrogenated products with up to 98% overall yields, in which 97% are semi‐hydrogenated products. Under the optimal reaction conditions, both aromatic and aliphatic terminal alkynes have been successfully converted to the corresponding olefins with high efficiency and good selectivity. This method promotes the hydrogenation of terminal alkynes under mild conditions and opens up a window for the application of metal nanowires in organic syntheses.

Abstract:The review summarizes the known data on various methods for saturation and dearomatization of heterocyclic moieties, forming diverse aromatic compounds. Since the classical hydrogenation of substrates with molecular hydrogen has a number of fundamental drawbacks that hinder both its use at the laboratory level and its widespread implementation in industrial production, the main attention is paid to non-classical methods described in the literature over the last 20-25 years. The methods of ammonia-free Birch reduction, transfer hydrogenation, reduction by Hantzsch esters and some other reactions involving heterocyclic compounds are summarized and systematized. It is shown that such methods of reduction or dearomatization of heterocycles can in some cases be more efficient than classical procedures. The bibliography includes 173 references.

Abstract:Aromatic hydrocarbons are important precursors of ozone and secondary organic aerosols in the urban atmosphere, which have important impact on air pollution, climate change and human health. Thus the research on the oxidation mechanism of aromatic hydrocarbons has become one of the most challenging hotspots topics in atmospheric environmental chemistry. This paper reviews the recent studies of aromatic hydrocarbons oxidation mechanism, discusses the reaction channels and influencing factors during the oxidation process under high/low NOx conditions, and focuses on new discoveries and new theories in the studies of aromatic hydrocarbon oxidation reactions. In the atmosphere, the initiation of aromatic hydrocarbons is dominated by the reaction with the OH radicals. According to the different reaction products, the oxidation reaction of aromatic hydrocarbon is mainly divided into aldehyde pathway, phenolic pathway, bicyclic RO2 pathway and epoxide pathway. With the development of new theories such as the formation of polyhydroxy compounds by aldehyde pathway, alkoxy radical epoxidation reaction, intramolecular H-migration reaction of bicyclic peroxy radicals, 1,5-aldehydic H-shift reaction, and the generation of low-carbon products by CO-loss reaction, the understanding of aromatic hydrocarbons oxidation mechanisms has improved. However, due to the carbon missing and radical budgets imbalance problems in the existing oxidation mechanism, our understanding about the subsequent O-3 and secondary organic aerosols formation mechanisms are very limited. Theoretical calculation and experiment are the main methods to study the oxidation mechanism of aromatic hydrocarbons. Mass spectrometry and spectroscopy are the dominant measurement techniques for the oxidation intermediates of aromatic hydrocarbons. Online mass spectrometry can capture the tracer intermediates at the molecular level, which plays an important role in revealing the oxidation mechanism of aromatic hydrocarbons. In recent years, tracer measurement technology, especially chromatography-mass spectrometry technology has developed rapidly. This open up a new direction for the accurate measurement of intermediates and the improvement of aromatic hydrocarbon oxidation mechanism. On this basis, improving aromatic hydrocarbons oxidation mechanism, paying attention to the carbon missing and radical budgets imbalance in the oxidation reaction, and exploring the environmental implication of aromatic hydrocarbons oxidation in the real atmospheric conditions are expected to become the important directions of aromatic hydrocarbon oxidation study in the future.

Abstract:Ultra-dispersed Ni nanoparticles (7.5 nm) on nitrogen-doped carbon nanoneedles (Ni@NCNs) were prepared by simple pyrolysis of Ni-based metal–organic-framework for selective hydrogenation of halogenated nitrobenzenes to corresponding anilines. Two different crystallization methods (stirring and static) were compared and the optimal pyrolysis temperature was explored. Ni@NCNs were systematically characterized by wide analytical techniques. In the hydrogenation of p-chloronitrobenzene, Ni@NCNs-600 (pyrolyzed at 600 °C) exhibited extraordinarily high performance with 77.9 h–1 catalytic productivity and > 99% p-chloroaniline selectivity at full p-chloronitrobenzene conversion under mild conditions (90 °C, 1.5 MPa H2), showing obvious superiority compared with reported Ni-based catalysts. Notably, the reaction smoothly proceeded at room temperature with full conversion and > 99% selectivity. Moreover, Ni@NCNs-600 afforded good tolerance to various nitroarenes substituted by sensitive groups (halogen, nitrile, keto, carboxylic, etc.), and could be easily recycled by magnetic separation and reused for 5 times without deactivation. The adsorption tests showed that the preferential adsorption of –NO2 on the catalyst can restrain the dehalogenation of p-chloronitrobenzene, thus achieving high p-chloroaniline selectivity. While the high activity can be attributed to high Ni dispersion, special morphology, and rich pore structure of the catalyst.

Abstract:The introduction of added '3‐dimensionality' through late‐stage functionalization of extended (hetero)aromatic systems is a powerful synthetic approach. The abundance of starting materials and cross‐coupling methodologies to access the precursors allows for highly diverse products. Subsequent selective partial reduction can alter the core structure in a manner of interest to medicinal chemists. Herein, we describe the precise, partial reduction of multicyclic heteroaromatic systems using a simple heterogeneous catalyst. The approach can be extended to introduce deuterium (again at late‐stage). Excellent yields can be obtained using simple reaction conditions.

Abstract:Dehydrogenative aromatization of alkyl substituents represents a powerful approach to aryl-substituted functional molecules. However, the inertness of alkyl groups and the need for harsh reaction conditions accompanied by low product selectivity hamper its widespread applications. Here, we demonstrate the highly selective on-surface thermal aromatization of n-hexyl substituents on polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) to their phenyl-substituted analogues under mild conditions. After depositing two representative precursor molecules, n-hexyl-substituted hexaphenylbenzene (HPB-Hex) and bianthryl octacarboxylic tetraimide (BATI-Hex), onto a pre-heated Au(111) substrate, dehydroaromatization of the peripheral n-hexyl groups into phenyl rings occurs, following the planarization of hexaphenylbenzene and bianthryl core. This process involves sequential intramolecular C-C bond rotations, dehydrogenation, and cyclodehydrogenation reactions, yielding phenyl-substituted hexabenzocoronene (HBC-Ph) and bisanthene octacarboxylic tetraimides (BSTI-Ph). The reaction sequences were monitored using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and bond-resolved non-contact atomic force microscopy (nc-AFM), offering structural proof of both intermediates and final products. These experimental techniques were complemented by density functional theory (DFT) simulations, which facilitated the detection of crucial steps in the conversion of n-hexyl to phenyl groups. Moreover, the effect of alkyl aromatization on the electronic properties of the newly formed aromatic hydrocarbons was elucidated using scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS).
