Abstract:While numerous papers have explored Biomass Supply Chain Network Design (BSCND), a significant gap persists in the literature regarding models that encompass different types of biomasses, including jatropha, algae, and food and livestock waste, concurrently. Previous biomass supply chain models have primarily focused on minimizing the total network design costs, with lesser emphasis on optimizing environmental and social factors. Moreover, the limited number of existing biomass supply chain networks have integrated disruption risk with energy production from second-generation and third-generation biomass amidst uncertainty. Additionally, most models have centered on producing biodiesel and other by-products, whereas this study addresses the production of electrical energy and other products from biomass. This paper proposes an integrated scenario-based multi-period multi-objective mathematical model for designing a sustainable supply chain network (SCN) for energy production from second-generation and third-generation biomass while considering disruption risk. The mathematical model encompasses four objectives aimed at simultaneously optimizing total costs, energy production, job creation, and greenhouse gas emissions. To address uncertainty, the possibility planning approach is utilized, while the Torabi–Hassini (TH) method is employed to convert the four-objective model into a single-objective formulation. Additionally, a case study is presented to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed mathematical model.
