Abstract:Fast transmission of COVID-19 led to mass cancelling of events to contain the virus outbreak. Amid lockdown restrictions, a vast number of construction projects came to a halt. Robotic platforms can perform construction projects in an unmanned manner, thus ensuring the essential construction tasks are not suspended during the pandemic. This research developed a BIM-based prototype, including a task planning algorithm and a motion planning algorithm, to assist in the robotic assembly of COVID-19 hospitalisation light weight structures with prefabricated components. The task planning algorithm can determine the assembly sequence and coordinates for various types of prefabricated components. The motion planning algorithm can generate robots' kinematic parameters for performing the assembly of the prefabricated components. Testing of the prototype finds that it has satisfactory performance in terms of 1) the reasonableness of assembly sequence determined, 2) reachability for the assembly coordinates of prefabricated components, and 3) capability to avoid obstacles.

Abstract:Multi-mobile robot systems(MMRSs)are widely used for transportation in industrial scenes such as manufacturing and warehousing.In an MMRS,motion coordination is important as collisions and deadlocks may lead to losses or system stagnation.However,in some scenarios,robot sizes are different when loaded and unloaded,which means that the robots are variable-sized,making motion coordination more difficult.The methods based on zone control need to first divide the environment into disjoint zones,and then allocate the zones statically or dynamically for motion coordination.The zone-control-based methods are not accurate enough for variable-sized multi-mobile robots and reduce the efficiency of the system.This paper describes a motion coordination method based on glued nodes,which can dynamically avoid collisions and deadlocks according to the roadmap structure and the real-time paths of robots.Dynamic features make this method directly applicable to various scenarios,instead of dividing a roadmap into disjoint zones.The proposed method has been applied to many industrial projects,and this study is based on some manufacturing projects for experiments.Theoretical analysis and experimental results show that the proposed algorithm is effective and efficient.
The Geometric Principle of Automatic Modular Fixture Planning

Abstract:Abstract In this paper, we present a systematic methodology for automatic planning of modular fixture. The approach constructs all the feasible fixture plans of a part with linear and circular edges by using the mechanism theory. Based on the geometric relationships between locator triplet and three boundary edges of a part, we classified the loading and unloading motion of the part into two kinds, i.e. translational motion and rotational motion. Moreover we put forward the notions of the locator visible cone and the pivotal locator, and utilize these notions to analyze the accessibility of locators. To effectively analyze the feasibility of clamping the part, and generate all of the feasible clamp positions, the notions of the triangle of instant rotational center and the same direction edge of the triangle are set forth and utilized. Finally, several criteria of evaluating fixture design are given for generating optimal fixture plan.

Abstract:Grid-based path planning method can't meet the motion constraints due to discretization, and its cost function only considers an aspect of navigation costs, which limits it to relative simple environments. To solve these two problems, a motion constrained generalized Field D * algorithm is proposed. In this algorithm, the cost function was designed to involve one or several navigation costs, including distance, safety and time cost. Moreover, according to motion model of robot, the planned path was further smoothed regarding to the constraint of minimum turning radius. A group of simulated grid maps describing complicated environments had been tested. Experiments show that the proposed algorithm not only fits complicated environments but also improves performability of the results.

Abstract:This research addresses the increasing demand for advanced navigation systems capable of operating within confined surroundings. A significant challenge in this field is developing an efficient planning framework that can generalize across various types of collision avoidance missions. Utilizing numerical optimal control techniques, this study proposes a unified optimization-based planning framework to meet these demands. We focus on handling two collision avoidance problems, i.e., the object not colliding with obstacles and not colliding with boundaries of the constrained region. The object or obstacle is denoted as a union of convex polytopes and ellipsoids, and the constrained region is denoted as an intersection of such convex sets. Using these representations, collision avoidance can be approached by formulating explicit constraints that separate two convex sets, or ensure that a convex set is contained in another convex set, referred to as separating constraints and containing constraints, respectively. We propose to use the hyperplane separation theorem to formulate differentiable separating constraints, and utilize the S-procedure and geometrical methods to formulate smooth containing constraints. We state that compared to the state of the art, the proposed formulations allow a considerable reduction in nonlinear program size and geometry-based initialization in auxiliary variables used to formulate collision avoidance constraints. Finally, the efficacy of the proposed unified planning framework is evaluated in two contexts, autonomous parking in tractor-trailer vehicles and overtaking on curved lanes. The results in both cases exhibit an improved computational performance compared to existing methods.
Efficient Motion Planning Based on Kinodynamic Model for Quadruped Robots Following Persons in Confined Spaces

Abstract:Quadruped robots have superior terrain adaptability and flexible movement capabilities than traditional robots. In this article, we innovatively apply it in person-following tasks, and propose an efficient motion planning scheme for quadruped robots to generate a flexible and effective trajectory in confined spaces. The method builds a real-time local costmap via onboard sensors, which involves both static and dynamic obstacles. And we exploit a simplified kinodynamic model and formulate the friction pyramids formed by ground reaction forces’ inequality constraints to ensure the executable of the optimized trajectory. In addition, we obtain the optimal following trajectory in the costmap completely based on the robot's rectangular footprint description, which ensures that it can walk through the narrow spaces avoiding collision. Finally, a receding horizon control strategy is employed to improve the robustness of motion in complex environments. The proposed motion planning framework is integrated on the quadruped robot JueYing and tested in simulation as well as real scenarios. It shows that the execution success rates in various scenes are all over 90%.
Optimal Control-Based Online Motion Planning For Cooperative Lane Changes Of Connected And Automated Vehicles

Abstract:This work formulates the multi-vehicle lane change motion planning task as a centralized optimal control problem, which is beneficial in being generic and complete. However, a direct solution to this optimal control problem is numerically intractable due to the dimensionality of the collision-avoidance constraints and nonlinearity of the vehicle kinematics. A progressively constrained dynamic optimization (PCDO) method is proposed to facilitate the numerical solving process of this complicated problem. PCDO guarantees to efficiently obtain an optimum to the original optimal control problem via solving a sequence of simplified problems which gradually judge and reserve only the active collision-avoidance constraints. A first-regularization-then-action strategy, together with the look-up table technique, is developed for online solutions. At the regularization stage, the vehicles form a standard formation by linear acceleration/deceleration only. At the action stage, the vehicles execute lane change motions computed offline and recorded in the look-up table. This makes online motion planning feasible because 1) the computational complexity at the regularization stage scales linearly rather than exponentially with the vehicle number; and 2) online computation at the action stage is fully avoided through data extraction from the look-up table.

Abstract:The successful completion of modular-based heavy industrial construction projects relies heavily on safe and efficient crane operations, which have a direct impact on project productivity. Corresponding to the design of reliable crane operations, this paper proposes three-dimensional (3D) visualization-based motion planning for mobile cranes that integrates 3D visualization with mathematical algorithms based on "what if" scenarios. This method facilitates the design of collision-free mobile crane operations for a large number of lifts in congested areas. The proposed methodology is established based on two types of interactive analyses: (1) rotation analysis to build 3D visualization for the motions of crane body configurations; and (2) spatial analysis to detect potential collision errors in order to design collision-free crane operations. The rotation analysis accounts for calculating the angles describing the orientations of mechanical elements in the crane system by reading the coordinates of the crane location and the pick and set points of the object (module) to be lifted. The spatial analysis is used to monitor and maintain sufficient clearances between existing obstacles and the crane body configurations in order to prevent potential collisions during crane operation design. Motion Primitives Planning For Center-Articulated Vehicles

Abstract:Autonomous navigation across unstructured terrains, including forests and construction areas, faces unique challenges due to intricate obstacles and the element of the unknown. Lacking pre-existing maps, these scenarios necessitate a motion planning approach that combines agility with efficiency. Critically, it must also incorporate the robot's kinematic constraints to navigate more effectively through complex environments. This work introduces a novel planning method for center-articulated vehicles (CAV), leveraging motion primitives within a receding horizon planning framework using onboard sensing. The approach commences with the offline creation of motion primitives, generated through forward simulations that reflect the distinct kinematic model of center-articulated vehicles. These primitives undergo evaluation through a heuristic-based scoring function, facilitating the selection of the most suitable path for real-time navigation. To account for disturbances, we develop a pose-stabilizing controller, tailored to the kinematic specifications of center-articulated vehicles. During experiments, our method demonstrates a $67\%$ improvement in SPL (Success Rate weighted by Path Length) performance over existing strategies. Furthermore, its efficacy was validated through real-world experiments conducted with a tree harvester vehicle - SAHA.

Abstract:The existing research of the industrial robotic motion planning mainly focuses on the trajectory planning and the path planning, which aim at obtaining a minimum-time trajectory and finding an obstacle-free path respectively. In the trajectory planning, the jerks of robotic joints are usually not considered, so the smoothness of the robotic motion cannot be ensured. In the path planning, the complex spatial curves generally cannot be tracked easily, and it needs the fussy teach-and-playback operation. In this paper, based on the different constraint characteristic of the variable motion phases in the practical robotic task, the complicated task is decomposed into two kinds of sub processes, which are the free motion process and the constrained motion process. In the free motion process, the kinematic models of quasi trapezoidal waveform and quasi triangular waveform are proposed with the dynamic limits of maximum velocities, accelerations and jerks of robotic joints, so the minimum-time trajectory can be obtained with the motion smoothness. In the constrained motion process, the mathematical presentation of the task paths is extracted from the CAD models of the workpieces, so the complex spatial curves can be tracked autonomously without much teaching operation. In addition to the theoretical research, a robotic virtual prototyping system is also developed for the industrial arc welding production. The proposed research ensures the robotic motion smoothness, enhances the ability for tracking the complex spatial curves, and improves the quality and efficiency of the robotic motion planning.

Abstract:Modular integrated construction (MiC) is an innovative construction method that is widely used in practice, but high transportation cost is an obstacle to its wider implementation. This paper is motivated by the real-world need for a scientific approach for MiC transport scheduling, and addresses the practical problem of how to achieve on-time door-to-door MiC delivery in an economical manner. An innovative integer programming model is formulated with the objective of minimising the total transportation costs, including trailer rental, fuel costs, and worker salaries. A case study based on Hong Kong data validates that the developed model can be efficiently solved for problems of practical size. The results also demonstrate that the derived MiC schedule plan can reduce transportation costs by 58.7% compared with a just-in-time (JIT) strategy, thus bringing great economic benefits to off-site construction practitioners. Useful managerial implications related to on-site MiC storage areas are derived through sensitivity analysis. Overall, this paper sets the ground for the application of mathematical programming methodology to the off-site construction field. Future research may be devoted to MiC transport scheduling under uncertainty.

These heavy modules are often prefabricated and each project consists of a large number of lifts (e.g., a typical industrial project may have between 150 and 1000 modules to be lifted). To ensure the safety and efficiency of these lifting activities, crane motion planning is needed. However, in practice, most of the heavy lift studies are, at best, performed semiautomatically and still require significant manual work. In addition to being inefficient, this approach is also characterized by a high error rate, especially in the context of congested construction sites, not to mention its slow response to changes in work order or project scope. For instance, if a module is delayed, the crane motion planning may need to be redesigned (at least partially) since the configuration of the obstacles on the construction site no longer conforms to what had been assumed in the original planning. This paper thus proposes a generic model for mobile crane motion planning that can be implemented in industrial projects. The proposed approach considers the typical site constraints and performs automatic planning for the entire site. An industrial project with more than 100 modules is selected for validation of the proposed method. 3D visualization is also developed to demonstrate the lifts in a 3D Studio Max environment. Improving construction safety through real-time motion planning of cranes

Abstract:Good awareness of the construction site environment and following the operation requirements of cranes are essential for safety. This paper describes a new approach integrating an environment perception technology and motion planning of cranes to improve construction safety. Motion planning and re-planning algorithms are applied for cranes considering kinematic and engineering constraints. An ultra wideband real-time location system is used to update the environment information, which is used for collision avoidance by the re-planning algorithm. A prototype system and a case study are described to show the practical value of this research.

Abstract:Logistics planning is a critical part of developing supply chain for modular integrated construction (MiC) projects in Hong Kong where high-rise, high density and hilly landscape is the norm. It is important to minimize the total logistics and to guarantee timely delivery of modules, especially for several MiC projects being constructed during the same period. Nevertheless, there is a significant lack of studies on logistics planning, optimization and visualization for MiC projects. The aim of this paper is to establish an integrated MiC logistics planning and visualization platform, which is grounded on the integration of building information modeling (BIM), geographical information system (GIS) and vehicle routing problem (VRP) algorithm. The framework is then presented and evaluated using a case study to identify optimal logistics scenario of trailer routes to meet the installation time window of MiC projects in Hong Kong. The paper finds that the proposed platform has the ability to make optimized logistics scenario for MiC projects, and to visualize the logistics scenario in a 3-dimentional interactive environment. Future study will focus on adopting flexible control strategies and including more decision-making criteria of logistics planning in MiC projects such as road width limitation, travel speed and different module types

Abstract:In complex driving scenarios, automated vehicles should behave reasonably and respond adaptively with high computational efficiency. In this paper, a computational efficient motion planning method is proposed, which considers traffic interaction and accelerates calculation. Firstly, the behavior is decided by connecting the points on the unequally divided road segments and lane centerlines, which simplifies the decision-making process in both space and time span. Secondly, as the dynamic vehicle model with changeable longitudinal velocity is considered in the trajectory generation module, the C/GMRES algorithm is used to accelerate the calculation of trajectory generation and realize on-line solving in nonlinear model predictive control. Meanwhile, the motion of other traffic participants is more accurately predicted based on the driver's intention and kinematics vehicle model, which enables the host vehicle to obtain a more reasonable behavior and trajectory. The simulation results verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:Crawler cranes are the most pivotal components on large-scale modular construction sites. Generating a practical and safe lift plan significantly impacts the successful delivery of such projects. This paper introduces an integrated crane planning and lift scheduling framework for managing multiple concurrent mobile cranes' operations. The presented framework is built upon recently developed crane planning and optimization systems. It aims to balance four primary areas of project management (time, cost, quality, and safety) through schedule enhancement, cost estimation, and risk mitigation. This approach leads to a more practical lift plan. Automating the process of detecting logical issues and satisfying the constraints in the lift planning process helps to improve time efficiency and reduce errors. This paper also scrutinizes crane operations to provide a realistic budget and schedule. The developed lift planning system is flexible and practical, as validated by its successful implementation in several real modular projects in North America.

Abstract:Modular-based heavy construction projects are recognized as faster, safer, and more efficient than traditional those completed through on-site construction methods. The successful completion of these projects relies on an efficient material handling system, especially when mobile cranes are utilized to satisfy heavy lift requirements. However, engineers are faced with the challenge of planning the lifting operations of heavy modules within congested areas. Currently, mobile crane analysis is implemented manually, but requires timeconsuming data input resulting in an increase of errors and a lack of proper crane productivity performance analysis; this complicates the planning process. To overcome these limitations, the research presented in this paper proposes to integrate visualization and simulation, in an approach known as post-3D visualization simulation, in order to plan collision-free crane lifts by eliminating potential errors in 3D visualization and to predict crane productivity performance in simulations. This proposed system will contribute to the successful completion of construction projects with high productivity and site-error reduction by selecting the best crane operation that includes various crane lifts. An actual industrial project which has a number of constraints, including space limitations, different types of site layouts, and various crane lifts, is used to validate the proposed framework.
Toward Safety-Aware Informative Motion Planning for Legged Robots

Abstract:This paper reports on developing an integrated framework for safety-aware informative motion planning suitable for legged robots. The information-gathering planner takes a dense stochastic map of the environment into account, while safety constraints are enforced via Control Barrier Functions (CBFs). The planner is based on the Incrementally-exploring Information Gathering (IIG) algorithm and allows closed-loop kinodynamic node expansion using a Model Predictive Control (MPC) formalism. Robotic exploration and information gathering problems are inherently path-dependent problems. That is, the information collected along a path depends on the state and observation history. As such, motion planning solely based on a modular cost does not lead to suitable plans for exploration. We propose SAFE-IIG, an integrated informative motion planning algorithm that takes into account: 1) a robot's perceptual field of view via a submodular information function computed over a stochastic map of the environment, 2) a robot's dynamics and safety constraints via discrete-time CBFs and MPC for closed-loop multi-horizon node expansions, and 3) an automatic stopping criterion via setting an information-theoretic planning horizon. The simulation results show that SAFE-IIG can plan a safe and dynamically feasible path while exploring a dense map.

A planning method for safe interaction between human arms and robot manipulators

Abstract:This paper presents a planning method based on mapping moving obstacles into C-space for safe interaction between human arms and robot manipulators. In pre-processing phase, a hybrid distance metric is defined to select neighboring sampled nodes in C-space to construct a roadmap. Then, two kinds of mapping are constructed to determine invalid and dangerous edges in the roadmap for each basic cell decomposed in workspace. For updating the roadmap when an obstacle is moving, basic cells covering the obstacle's surfaces are mapped into the roadmap by using new positions of the surfaces points sampled on the obstacle. In query phase, in order to predict and avoid coming collisions and reach the goal efficiently, an interaction strategy with six kinds of planning actions of searching, updating, walking, waiting, dodging and pausing are designed. Simulated experiments show that the proposed method is efficient for safe interaction between two working robot manipulators and two randomly moving human arms.

Abstract:This paper considers the problem of autonomous robot navigation in unknown environments with moving obstacles. We propose a new method that systematically puts planning, motion prediction and safety metric design together to achieve environmental adaptive and safe navigation. This algorithm balances optimality in travel distance and safety with respect to passing clearance. Robot adapts progress speed adaptively according to the sensed environment, being fast in wide open areas and slow down in narrow passages and taking necessary maneuvers to avoid dangerous incoming obstacles. In our method, directional distance measure, conic-shape motion prediction and custom costmap are integrated properly to evaluate system risk accurately with respect to local geometry of surrounding environments. Using such risk estimation, reference governor technique and control barrier function are worked together to enable adaptive and safe path tracking in dynamical environments. We validate our algorithm extensively both in simulation and challenging real-world environments.
