Abstract:Proposed node localization scheme increase the accuracy by conjointly considering RSS and AoA measurements. Game theory model is applied to select optimum secondary anchors for throughput and energy efficiency enhancement. Localization error and latency is minimized by reducing storage overhead even with the presence of node mobility. In an underwater environment, it is necessary but tough to track the location of deployed sensor nodes because of node's mobility, nonavailability of GPS, node software or hardware failure and so forth. Due to these reasons, nodes cannot directly communicate with enough beacons in the neighbourhoods, resulting into localization error. This creates the need to develop the range‐based localization method that takes into consideration the features of the underwater environment with precise location estimation. The existing range‐based localization techniques involve huge computational and storage overhead along with localization latency. To solve these problems, a hybrid localization estimation technique of received signal strength (RSS) and angle of arrival (AoA) is presented in this article. In this hybrid method, AoA is estimated from the primary anchor (PA) while RSS is measured from the selected set of secondary anchors (SAs). Further, Game theory model is also applied to considerably increase the precision by choosing the optimum set of SAs even in the mobility assisted underwater environment. The proposed technique of identifying unknown sensor nodes is tested through NS2 simulation with multiple runs. The proposed technique achieves minimum localization error, delay, energy consumption and high packet delivery ratio in comparison to topology control for energy‐efficient localization, game theory based routing protocol, iterative mobile target localization, and RSS‐based localization.

Abstract:A distributed localization scheme based on mobility prediction for mobile underwater wireless sensor networks is proposed. Anchor nodes perform self-localization and mobility prediction, and serve as reference nodes to localize ordinary nodes. According to the group movement properties of underwater objects, ordinary nodes perform self-localization by utilizing the neighboring nodes' locations and their predicted speed vectors. Well-localized ordinary nodes serve as reference nodes to localize neighbors further. The modified covariance algorithm is employed to estimate the linear prediction parameters of the mobility pattern. A Node-Selection Strategy is proposed to select the most suitable reference nodes to localize an ordinary node. The simulation results demonstrate the advantages of the proposed scheme.

Abstract:The autonomous mobile nodes in underwater acoustic sensor network can be widely used in underwater rescue, mine clearance and many other important applications. And the precise localization for the mobile nodes is the basis of these applications. However, in the complex underwater environment, the mobile nodes localization error is easily caused by malicious nodes attacking anchor nodes and inaccurate range due to node mobility and variable sound speed. To solve this problem, this paper designs a secure and accurate localization algorithm for mobile nodes in underwater acoustic sensor network. In this localization algorithm, a reliable anchor nodes screening mechanism is established to ensure the accuracy of localization messages provided by anchor nodes. Subsequently, the inaccurate transmission delay caused by node mobility is corrected based on Unscented Kalman filter, and the real-time sound velocity profile is obtained by coastal acoustic tomography inversion method. Then combined with the acoustic ray tracing method, the accurate range is calculated, and thus the accurate position of mobile nodes within each localization period is obtained. Simulation experiments and reservoir experiments are conducted, and the results verify the proposed localization algorithm can reduce the localization error caused by malicious nodes, node mobility and variable sound speed and can improve the localization accuracy of the mobile nodes effectively.
Local Node Selection for Target Tracking Based on Underwater Wireless Sensor Networks

Abstract:Traditional sonar-array-based target tracking algorithms may be unsuitable for on-demand tracking missions, since they assume that the sonar arrays should be towed or mounted by a submarine or a ship. Alternatively, underwater wireless sensor networks can offer a promising solution approach. First, each underwater node is battery-powered, so saving energy expenditure is a critical issue. Instead of keeping all sensor nodes active, this paper provides a local node selection (LNS) scheme which increases energy efficiency by waking up only a small part of nodes at each time. Second, considering node's limited computing ability and the real-time requirement for the tracking algorithm, instead of employing the centralised fusion structure, we utilise the distributed Kalman filtering fusion with feedback in this paper. Finally, instead of assuming one sensor node can uniquely determine target's location, a more practical range-only measurement model is proposed. Then the LNS scheme and distributed fusion with feedback are extended to our range-only measurement model. The simulation results demonstrate the efficiency of our scheme.
Multi-AUV Localization for an Underwater Acoustic Sensor Network

Abstract:In this paper, a new approach for localizing underwater sensor nodes is presented. Multi-autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) are used in our method (in this paper we use four AUVs). Similar to a global satellite navigation system, each AUV broadcasts its position and the time when it sends its messages. Nodes in the communication range can receive the messages and detect the range differences from the four AUVs to the sensor nodes. Then we calculate their positions through trilateration by the range differences and the AUVs’ positions. Finally, both theoretical analysis and simulation results are given to confirm our method. There are many advantages in our approach: (1) it requires no time synchronization between nodes, but only requires time synchronization between the AUVs which can be easily achieved; (2) each AUV can run along a line, which makes the network nodes localization very fast and effective, and it is also easy for path planning; (3) one node can receive more than one message from one AUV, and we can get the node’s position more accurately.

Abstract:This paper aims to present, summarize, and mention the scope of improvement in the existing localization techniques. Further, a new classification into range‐based and range‐free categories of these schemes is depicted. Moreover, problem areas for the upcoming researchers are also mentioned. The implementation with simulation of some of the recent techniques have been done on the basis of parameters like localization delay, energy consumption, localization error and so on to showcase the reasons for better performance. Summary Underwater wireless sensor network (UWSN) connects the real world to the hidden resources available deep into the sea using sensor nodes deployed sparsely and are interconnected to gather information for any movement/change in the ocean. The computed information on nodes obtained from concurrently running UWSN's applications will be meaningful, only if the location of this change will be identified. Nevertheless, it is always difficult to obtain the exact location coordinates of any misadventure like tectonic plate's movement but using localization algorithms in UWSN helps to obtain the coordinates. Since localization algorithms for terrestrial networks are not feasible for UWSN because of environmental challenges. Moreover, GPS systems do not work after 15 m of depth and the radio frequency gets suppressed. So, the requirement arises to analyze existing localization approaches in the deep sea where acoustic signals are used for communication and data transfer. In this paper, along with describing the UWSN's applications and challenges, the underwater localization schemes are reviewed to present, summarize, and mention the scope of improvement. Further, classification into range‐based and range‐free categories of these schemes is depicted with implementation in the NS2.30 simulation environment of some of the recent techniques to showcase the reasons for better performance.

Abstract:The fact that sensor nodes are situated in specific places is most obvious in wireless sensor networks. A wireless sensor network has been designed to address node localization through several solutions. Environmental monitoring, healthcare, and industrial automation are just some of the fields where wireless sensor networks (WSNs) find extensive application. This sort of WSN application is fundamentally dependent on the accurate localization of sensor nodes. The purpose of this paper is to propose an enhanced received signal strength indicator (RSSI) technique for determining unlocalized nodes using anchor nodes. An optimal communication range, aligning with the application needs, can be determined by assessing the dynamic correlation between communication distance and the RSSI throughout the localization procedure. The advanced RSSI-based node localization method proposed in this study involves two distinct stages: the distance determination phase and the computation phase. In this work, we assess the outcome using the Castalia simulation. The precision of wireless sensor network node location is greatly improved by integrating mobile anchor nodes with RSSI-based dynamic node localization. The results of the simulations and the subsequent analysis attest to the excellent accuracy and low energy consumption of the suggested method during the localization procedure.

Abstract:This article investigates the underwater node dynamic localization and prediction problems in a dynamic sensor network. Node localization in the Internet of underwater things is the basis of target tracking and ocean monitoring. At present, most of the node location algorithms assume calm sea and fixed node location. However, the current velocity is uncertain in space and time. The nodes are drifted with the current motion. Therefore, most of the localization algorithms lose efficacy in the actual marine environment. In order to solve the above problems, a node dynamic prediction algorithm is proposed. First, the node mobility model is improved, which is more suitable for the actual marine environment. Second, a frequency-based anchor node prediction algorithm is designed to improve anchor node location accuracy. Third, when the ordinary node receives the signals sent by anchor nodes of different depths, a deep information-based weighted fusion method is designed for the ordinary node localization in order to mine more information in each direction. Finally, location and prediction simulation in sensor networks is carried out. The results show that the proposed node localization and prediction algorithm is more accurate than SMLP and high-precision localization with mobility prediction algorithms and prove the enhanced effect of our method in dynamic marine.

Abstract:Maritime search and rescue plays an important part in ensuring the safety of life at sea. When using wireless Sensor Network (WSN) technologies in maritime, nevertheless, it endures from situations where the measurement information is inadequate. In computing and networking for maritime applications, Wireless Sensor Network (WSNs) is a rising inflexion because of its amazing features. Simultaneously, there are some challenges faced by WSNs and node localization is one of them. Node localization is an important factor because until the location of reporting node is unknown, the data sensed by that node is totally useless. The main aim of this paper is towards gaining more improvement in localization by using swarm intelligence algorithm. To achieve this aim, a range-free and distributed method by using the application of salp swarm algorithm for moving target node in network for maritime rescue is proposed. The results are compared with existing algorithm Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and Butterfly Optimization Algorithm (BOA). The proposed method has approximately 10% less localization error as compared to PSO and BOA. The proposed algorithm is validated in terms of localization accuracy, localized nodes, localization errors and computing time.

Abstract:A multitude of applications of wireless sensor networks require that the sensor nodes be location-aware. Range-based localization schemes are sometimes not feasible due to hardware cost and resource restriction of the sensor nodes. As cost-efficient solutions, range-free localization schemes are more attractive for large-scale networks. This paper presents Weighted Centriod (W-Centriod), a novel range-free localization scheme extended on the basis of Centroid scheme, which takes received signal strength indicator (RSSI) metric into account besides connectivity metric used in Centroid scheme. It's shown that our W-Centriod method outperforms Centriod scheme significantly in terms of both the average localization error and the uniformity of error distribution across different positions, which decrease by 49.3% and by 37.7%, respectively, under the best circumstance. Moreover, a two-phase localization approach consisting of a field data collection phase and an off-line parameter optimization phase is proposed for localization in wireless sensor networks.

Abstract:In recent times, wireless sensor network (WSN) finds their suitability in several application areas, ranging from military to commercial ones. Since nodes in WSN are placed arbitrarily in the target field, node localization (NL) becomes essential where the positioning of the nodes can be determined by the aid of anchor nodes. The goal of any NL scheme is to improve the localization accuracy and reduce the localization error rate. With this motivation, this study focuses on the design of Intelligent Aquila Optimization Algorithm Based Node Localization Scheme (IAOAB-NLS) for WSN. The presented IAOAB-NLS model makes use of anchor nodes to determine proper positioning of the nodes. In addition, the IAOAB-NLS model is stimulated by the behaviour of Aquila. The IAOAB-NLS model has the ability to accomplish proper coordinate points of the nodes in the network. For guaranteeing the proficient NL process of the IAOAB-NLS model, widespread experimentation takes place to assure the betterment of the IAOAB-NLS model. The resultant values reported the effectual outcome of the IAOAB-NLS model irrespective of changing parameters in the network.

Abstract:In the ocean, huge number of sensor nodes (SNs) are located to transfer the information between other nodes using the Underwater Acoustic Sensor Network (UASN) framework. An underwater acoustic communication technique is utilized by this UASN to exchange the information. Because of environmental conditions and adverse channel, the SNs in UASN may have link breakages. Likewise, maximum target coverage rate for SN deployment is considered as another issue. So it is very essential to create a strong communication system in underwater together with the different kind of variations in ocean environment. As a result, the system will perform better data transmission with the severely fluctuating underwater communication conditions. In this paper, a latest optimization algorithm named as Sea Lion Optimization (SLO) procedure is proposed to discover the optimal location for SN in underwater communication. This algorithm optimally places the acoustic SNs based on the maximum connectivity rate by finding the targeted optimal position. The Matlab tool is utilized for implementation purpose, and the different kinds of parameters like connectivity rate, coverage rate, and delay are taken to evaluate the performance of proposed methodology. Moreover, the existing methods like deployment scheme, Connected Dominating set based depth computation Approach (CDA) approach, and distributive approach are taken to contrast the performance of proposed methodology. When compared to the previous algorithms, our proposed methodology achieves 95% connectivity ratio for varying number of acoustic SNs.

Abstract:One of the most popular researches in recent years is UWSN (Underwater Sensor Network). UWSNs are used for various applications and also which is used between different hubs and ground-based stations. Also, this system is mainly used for naval applications like tracking and detecting submarines. The process of localization of the target is fundamental to detecting submarines. So, in this paper, a novel model of localization of sensor nodes with range-based localization method utilizing the hybrid Spider Monkey Battle Royale Algorithm (hybrid SMBR) is proposed. The place of the submarine is determined using the reflected arrival signal and the direction of arrival. The submarine's position is then sent to be monitored using an energy-knowledge depth-based routing protocol. The effectiveness of the proposed UWSN system is determined by evaluating different metrics such as localization error, delivery ratio, localization coverage, energy consumption, delay, packet drop, and throughput.

Abstract:Being an extensive part of marine study, underwater localization has fascinated widespread consideration in both civil and military. The underwater sensor network localization should differ from existing terrestrial and recent localization techniques, owing to catastrophic ocean conditions, large-scale networks, and node drift, even in a static environment, along with the pretense of adverse challenges. To address these technical difficulties, we propose a hierarchical localization approach with anchor and ordinary nodes localized in two phases. First, anchor nodes are localized with the help of surface buoys, drifted on the water. Second, we propose a threshold that originates from the midpoint of the deployed anchor nodes for ordinary node localization. The nature of the threshold in the proposed technique enables the localization of all nodes in a network by demonstrating that the anchor node can cover 100% of the area after the nodes are deployed. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme gains high energy efficiency and precision, as well as wide localization coverage, which helps in ocean sustainability. In addition, the proposed technique is implemented in the Aqua-sim toolkit of NS-2 for the validation of the simulation results.

Abstract:Autonomous underwater vehicle networks is a significant resource for aquatic life maintenance and monitoring underwater pollution. It is necessary to study the underwater localization algorithms which self-localize themselves. The proposed work concentrates only on the range-free localization model with a goal is to use only very few sensing nodes in the network with low cost and high battery power to self-localize themselves. Few beacon nodes have been used to localize the sensor nodes in the definite position of the network. Compressive sensing theory based on hop count information for localizing the sensor nodes has also been used for localization. This research aims to collect the connectivity information of all the nodes in the network with compressive sensing theory and improve the localization accuracy. The analysis presents that the proposed method works well with location accuracy. Compressive Sensing Node Localization reduces cost and enhances sensors' energy efficiency compared to other underwater localization algorithms.

Optoacoustic Signal-Based Underwater Node Localization Technique: Overcoming GPS Limitations without AUV Requirements

Abstract:Underwater sensor networks are anticipated to facilitate numerous commercial and military applications. Moreover, precise self-localization in practical underwater scenario is a crucial challenge in sensor networks because of the complexity of deploying sensor points in specific locations. The Global Positioning System (GPS) is inappropriate for underwater localization because saline water may severely attenuate signal, limiting penetration capacity to barely a few meters. Hence, the most promising alternative to wireless radio wave transmissions for underwater networks is regarded as acoustic communication. In order to establish an underwater localization model, traditional techniques that essentially include surface gateways or intermediate anchor nodes create logistical challenges and security hazards when the surface access points are deployed. This paper proposes a unique localization method that employs optoacoustic signals to remotely localize underwater wireless sensor networks in order to address these concerns. In our model, the GPS signals are transmitted from the air to the underwater node through a mobile beacon that employs optoacoustic techniques to generate a short-term isotropic acoustic signal source. Underwater nodes with omnidirectional receivers can detect their location in random and realistic environments by comparing signal levels from two equivalent plasmas, also referred as acoustic source nodes. Finally, the software simulation results in comparison to the proposed theoretical model highlight the feasibility of our approach. In comparison to complicated traditional node localization approach, our simplified approach is anticipated to achieve better accuracy with only a single off-water controlled node, while avoiding the additional requirement for surface anchor nodes.

Abstract:Deep-sea object localization by underwater acoustic sensor networks is a current research topic in the field of underwater communication and navigation. To find a deep-sea object using underwater wireless sensor networks (UWSNs), the sensors must first detect the signals sent by the object. The sensor readings are then used to approximate the object's position. A lot of parameters influence localization accuracy, including the number and location of sensors, the quality of received signals, and the algorithm used for localization. To determine position, the angle of arrival (AOA), time difference of arrival (TDoA), and received signal strength indicator (RSSI) are used. The UWSN requires precise and efficient localization algorithms because of the changing underwater environment. Time and position are required for sensor data, especially if the sensor is aware of its surroundings. This study describes a critical localization strategy for accomplishing this goal. Using beacon nodes, arrival distance validates sensor localization. We account for the fact that sensor nodes are not in perfect temporal sync and that sound speed changes based on the medium (water, air, etc.) in this section. Our simulations show that our system can achieve high localization accuracy by accounting for temporal synchronisation, measuring mean localization errors, and forecasting their variation. The suggested system localization has a lower mean estimation error (MEE) while using RSSI. This suggests that measurements based on RSSI provide more precision and accuracy during localization.
A Hybrid Range-Free Localization Scheme in Wireless Sensor Networks Work in Progress

Abstract:The localization information of each node in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) is of vital importance to most location-aware applications. In this paper, a hybrid range-free localization scheme is proposed by adopting DV-Hop and weighted Centroid localization schemes. The nodes in the sensor network are firstly grouped into clusters, and then Weighted Centroid localization scheme is employed to achieve the location of most sensor nodes in each cluster. Finally, location of "undetermined" nodes is computed by using DV-Hop. The proposed localization algorithm achieves a balance between cost and accuracy, while yielding an acceptable accuracy and obtaining the scalability of sensor networks. Simulation results show that our proposed algorithm performs well under the condition that comparatively high density of anchor nodes are deployed.
A Top-Down Positioning Scheme for Underwater Wireless Sensor Networks.

Abstract:In order to increase the localization coverage while keeping the localization error small in a unique network architecture in which there are not evenly distributed anchor nodes with great ability of communication or additional infrastructure, a Top-down Positioning Scheme (TPS) for underwater acoustic sensor networks is proposed. By defining node's confidence reasonably, TPS insures the quality of the new reference nodes. TPS also refines the nodes which have just been positioned via the gradient method and helps non-localized nodes search for more reference nodes via the new scheme for 3D Euclidean distance estimation. By comparing the new scheme for 3D Euclidean distance estimation with the existing scheme, the new scheme is shown to have greater ability to estimate two-hop Euclidean distance in 3D space. Simulation results show that TPS which integrates node's confidence defined reasonably, the gradient method, and the new scheme for 3D Euclidean distance estimation can increase the localization coverage ratio, while keeping the localization error small.
Range-Free Localization Scheme Based on a Reconstructed Marine Predators Algorithm With Adaptive Enhancement for Wireless Sensor Networks

Abstract:Wireless sensor networks (WSN) are widely utilized in all walks of industries, and node localization is still essential as one of the fundamental functionalities. Moreover, the marine predators algorithm (MPA), as one of the swarm intelligence optimization algorithms, has proven to possess strong search capability and high convergence speed. Therefore, for the poor optimization ability of the least squares method in the DV-Hop method, a reconstructed marine predator algorithm with adaptive enhancement (RMPA-AE) for WSN node localization is proposed in this paper. Firstly, a population diversity expression based on Euclidean distance is proposed to reconstruct the phases of the algorithm. Then, an adaptive enhancement strategy is proposed to improve the local exploitation ability of the algorithm with respect to its tendency to fall into local optimality. Subsequently, a global perturbation strategy based on the iteration number is proposed for the re-generation of the population at FADs to achieve a wide range of individual jumps. Finally, the experimental results for 26 benchmark functions demonstrate the search capability of the proposed RMPA-AE algorithm, and the superiority of the proposed algorithm compared to the state-of-the-art algorithms. The feasibility of the proposed algorithm is also demonstrated in the node localization simulation experiments.
