Abstract:Dynamic systems such as robots, autonomous vehicles, and process plants require careful design and control to achieve optimal performance. This paper presents an integrated framework for the simultaneous optimization of system design parameters and control policies. The underlying mathematical formulation utilizes optimization techniques to find the best system configuration and control strategy according to specified objectives. These objectives may include metrics such as tracking error, energy consumption, safety margins, and cost. Both model-based and data-driven techniques are explored for learning the system dynamics and synthesizing optimal controllers. The optimization algorithms leveraged include gradient-based methods, evolutionary algorithms, and reinforcement learning. The benefits of the joint optimization approach are demonstrated through case studies on representative dynamic systems. Results show that the integrated design and control framework outperforms sequential optimization, leading to improved efficiency, responsiveness, and robustness. This underscores the importance of co-optimizing design and control parameters, especially for complex, uncertain systems. Abstract:Evolutionary algorithms (EAs) are based on the underlying genetic process in biological organisms and on the natural evolution populations. Recently, EAs have found many potential applications in economical operation and control of power systems. However, when applying EAs to large scale system optimization problems, there is still a preeminent problem, the premature convergence problem, which degrade the EAs' performance. This paper presents an overview of the recent important techniques emerging in EAs' community with potential applications in power systems domains. These techniques covers both practical and theoretical considerations in self-adaptation and handling constraints. It is desired that they are helpful to the construction of some more efficient, robust EAs to solve a broader range of problems types in power systems.

Abstract:An engineering design project involves complex information flows, and is hard to manage without effective tools such as the design structure matrix (DSM). A new extension of DSM is proposed to facilitate managers to split some tasks so as to simplify the information flows and to minimize information feedbacks. A new chromosome is designed to constitute the data structure for task splitting and partitioning. Hence, an integrated one-stage genetic algorithm is proposed to optimize the information flows. An illustrative example is used to test the extension and the genetic algorithm, and the result shows that the algorithm helps to reduce information feedbacks.

Abstract:Nowadays, the differential evolution (DE) achieved noticeable progress and solved a wide range of non-linear/non-convex engineering optimization issues. As a strong optimizer, DE has many advantages like simple structure, strong exploitation ability and considerable convergence speed. However, DE also suffers from low diversification, poor exploration ability and stagnation. After significant reviewing and to avoid aforesaid gaps, this paper reports a modified DE (mDE) for solving non-linear/non-convex optimization problems, especially non-convex economic dispatch (ED). It adopted novel mutation strategy with new control parameters using concept of particle swarm optimization (PSO), to enhance exploration and exploitation activities more profusely and increase the global search capability. Also, a new crossover rate is employed in mDE, to attain higher convergence accuracy and quality optimal solutions. Finally, a novel selection strategy is introduced in mDE, to facilitate information sharing as well as for escaping local minima and keeps evolving. To validate the mDE performance, IEEE CEC2006 non-linear constrained benchmark suites are solved. Furthermore, its practicality, efficacy and excellence are further demonstrated in six complex non-linear engineering optimization issues and six cases (3, 6, 13, 15, 40 and 140—unit system) of non-convex ED problems. Besides, the mDE results are compared with other peer meta-heuristic methods. Comparison results analysis validates the competitive presentation of the developed mDE.

Abstract:Differential evolution (DE) is a popular evolutionary algorithm inspired by Darwin's theory of evolution and has been studied extensively to solve different areas of optimisation and engineering applications since its introduction by Storn in 1997. This study aims to review the massive progress of DE in the research community by analysing the 192 articles published on this subject from 1997 to 2021, particularly studies in the past five years. The methodology used to search for relevant DE papers and an overview of the original DE are firstly explained. Recent advances in the modifications proposed to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of the original DE are reviewed by analysing the strengths and weaknesses of each published work, followed by the potential applications of these DE variants in solving different real-world engineering problems. In contrast to most existing DE review papers, additional analyses are performed in this survey by investigating the impacts of various parameter settings on given DE variants to identify their optimal values required for solving certain problem classes. The qualities of modifications incorporated into selected DE variants are also evaluated by measuring the performance gains achieved in terms of search accuracy and/or efficiency against the original DE. The additional surveys conducted in this study are anticipated to provide more insightful perspectives for both beginners and experts of DE research, enabling their better understanding about current research trends and new motivations to outline appropriate strategic planning for future development works.

Abstract:Evolutionary algorithms (EAs) have many potential applications in power systems operation and control. However, when applying EAs to engineering optimization, there is still a preeminent problem, i.e. the premature convergence problem, which degrades the EAs' performance. As such, there has been extensive research from a theoretical point of view in this field to avoid the premature convergence problem and to improve EAs' performance. This review attempts to collect, organize and present in a unified way some of the most representative works in this field. They are categorized into four parts: encoding, self-adaptation, constraints-handling techniques and multi-objective optimization. An overview on the four technologies is presented herein and it is desired to provide some new ideas for developing successful EAs' applications.
