Abstract:The Pacific Walker circulation—the tropical Pacific zonal overturning circulation of the atmosphere—and the associated sea surface temperature distribution in the tropical Pacific significantly impact global climate. However, climate model historical simulations cannot capture the observed Walker circulation enhancement since around 1980. Although a number of mechanisms have been proposed to explain the observed change, quantitative discussion and clues for reconciling the model-observation discrepancy have not yet been settled. Here we show that the Walker circulation strengthening between 1980 and 2020 can be quantitatively explained by the remote influence of subtropical and extratropical sea surface temperature changes. This conclusion is obtained from climate model pacemaker experiments in which sea surface temperature anomalies outside the tropics are restored towards observations. Influence from the southeastern Pacific, which cools the eastern tropical Pacific, is especially crucial for the Walker circulation strengthening. This equatorward influence occurs mostly through the atmosphere and its thermal coupling with the ocean. We further show that current generation climate models have biases in southeastern Pacific surface temperature changes, which may cause the failure in reproducing the Walker circulation trend. Our results suggest that improved representation of air–sea coupling in this region could enable better projections of future climate.

Abstract:A strengthening of the Pacific Walker circulation (PWC) over recent decades triggered an intense debate on the validity of model-projected weakening of the PWC in response to anthropogenic warming. However, limitations of in situ observations and reanalysis datasets have hindered an unambiguous attribution of PWC changes to either natural or anthropogenic causes. Here, by conducting a comprehensive analysis based on multiple independent observational records, including satellite observations along with a large ensemble of model simulations, we objectively determine the relative contributions of internal variability and anthropogenic warming to the emergence of long-term PWC trends. Our analysis shows that the satellite-observed changes differ considerably from the model ensemble-mean changes, but they also indicate substantially weaker strengthening than implied by the reanalyses. Furthermore, some ensemble members are found to reproduce the observed changes in the tropical Pacific. These findings clearly reveal a dominant role of internal variability on the recent strengthening of the PWC.

Abstract:Since the early 1990s the Pacific Walker circulation shows a multi‐decadal strengthening, which contradicts future model projections. Whether this trend, evident in many climate indices especially before the 2015 El Niño, reflects the coupled ocean‐atmosphere response to global warming or the negative phase of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) remains debated. Here we show that sea surface temperature (SST) trends during 1980‐2020 are dominated by three signals: a spatially uniform warming trend, a negative PDO pattern, and a Northern Hemisphere/Indo‐West Pacific warming pattern. The latter pattern, which closely resembles the transient ocean thermostat‐like response to global warming emerging in a subset of CMIP6 models, shows cooling in the central‐eastern equatorial Pacific but warming in the western Pacific and tropical Indian ocean. Together with the PDO, this pattern drives the Walker circulation strengthening. Historical simulations appear to underestimate this pattern, contributing to the models' inability to replicate the Walker cell strengthening.

Abstract:The Pacific Walker circulation (PWC) was weak in the20th century, but its strength increased in an interdecadal scale in the late 1990s. Previous studies have suggested that it could be caused by the warming of the tropical Atlantic Ocean, or induced by the warming of the tropical Indian Ocean. The tropical Atlantic Ocean would not only directly affect the PWC through the equatorial east Pacific to the west, but also produce an indirect effect to the east through the equatorial west Indian Ocean. Using a coupled general circulation model, we designed a series of tropical Atlantic Heating and Heating_Shut experiments with different heating rates, to detect the mechanism of the impact of tropical Atlantic warming on the PWC. Results show that the tropical Atlantic heating weakens the Atlantic Walker circulation but strengthens the PWC. Diagnostics of multiple physical variables with coherent lower–upper troposphere structure show the responses of the Indian Ocean to the Atlantic heating play a critical role in the strengthening of the PWC. The Atlantic–linked atmosphere over the tropical Indian Ocean exerts a significantly positive heat flux onto the ocean there, greatly warming the tropical Indian Ocean, especially on the west part. This produces strong convectively ascending at the equatorial West Indian Ocean, but descending at the East-central Indian Ocean, corresponding to a 'Walker' circulation and an 'anti–Walker' circulation situated at the West and East equatorial Indian Ocean respectively. Meanwhile, the convergence (divergence) of the lower (upper) troposphere over the Indo‒Pacific region is also strengthened. In this way, the tropical Atlantic heating is linked to the PWC through the circulation over the equatorial Indian Ocean. This study serves as a preliminary step to understand the impact of tropical Atlantic warming on the PWC, more Atlantic heating sensitivity studies with multi-model experiments are required to further reveal the linkage of the Pacific and Atlantic.

Abstract:Variations in zonal surface temperature gradients and zonally asymmetric tropical overturning circulations (Walker circulations) are examined over a wide range of climates simulated with an idealized atmospheric general circulation model (GCM). The asymmetry in the tropical climate is generated by an imposed ocean energy flux, which does not vary with climate. The range of climates is simulated by modifying the optical thickness of an idealized longwave absorber (representing greenhouse gases). The zonal surface temperature gradient in low latitudes generally decreases as the climate warms in the idealized GCM simulations. A scaling relationship based on a two-term balance in the surface energy budget accounts for the changes in the zonally asymmetric component of the GCM-simulated surface temperature. The Walker circulation weakens as the climate warms in the idealized simulations, as it does in comprehensive simulations of climate change. The wide range of climates allows a systematic test of energetic arguments that have been proposed to account for these changes in the tropical circulation. The analysis shows that a scaling estimate based on changes in the hydrological cycle (precipitation rate and saturation specific humidity) accounts for the simulated changes in the Walker circulation. However, it must be evaluated locally, with local precipitation rates. If global-mean quantities are used, the scaling estimate does not generally account for changes in the Walker circulation, and the extent to which it does is the result of compensating errors in changes in precipitation and saturation specific humidity that enter the scaling estimate.

Abstract:The partitioning of cross-equatorial heat transport between the atmosphere and the ocean is investigated through a series of fully coupled experiments, where external radiative forcing is applied over different latitudinal bands. The modeling results reveal a first-order collaborative relationship between the ocean and the atmosphere. In response to low-latitude perturbations, the cross-equatorial heat transport is realized mainly through the atmosphere, as the total ocean heat transport (OHT) is largely offsets by its horizontal gyre component. However, as perturbations shift to higher latitudes in both hemispheres, the OHT responses become more important. We also find a significant interhemispheric asymmetry in the cross-equatorial heat transport, with the OHT contribution being more important in the Southern Hemisphere. This asymmetry is mainly attributed to different responses in the changes of the ocean circulation. When the radiative forcing is placed over the Southern Ocean, a buoyancy-driven clockwise cell is generated that extends from the Southern Ocean into the tropics in both the Indo-Pacific and Atlantic basins, effectively transporting energy to the northern hemisphere. Conversely, when the radiative forcing is placed over the northern high latitudes, the weakening of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation is responsible for the anomalous southward heat transport.

Tracking the Strength of the Walker Circulation with Stable Isotopes in Water Vapor

Abstract:General circulation models (GCMs) predict that the global hydrological cycle will change in response to anthropogenic warming. However, these predictions remain uncertain, in particular for precipitation [IPCC, 2013]. Held and Soden [2006] suggest that as lower-tropospheric water vapor concentration increases in a warming climate, the atmospheric circulation and convective mass fluxes will weaken. Unfortunately, this process is difficult to constrain, as convective mass fluxes are poorly observed and incompletely simulated in GCMs. Here, we demonstrate that stable hydrogen isotope ratios in tropical atmospheric water vapor can trace changes in temperature, atmospheric circulation and convective mass flux in a warming world. We evaluate changes in temperature, the distribution of water vapor, vertical velocity (ω) and advection, and water isotopes in vapor (δD V ) in water isotopeenabled GCM experiments for modern vs. high CO 2 atmospheres to identify spatial patterns of circulation change over the tropical Pacific. We find that slowing circulation in the tropical Pacific moistens the lower troposphere and weakens convective mass flux, both of which impact the δD of water vapor in the mid-troposphere. Our findings constitute a critical demonstration of how water isotope ratios in the tropical Pacific respond to changes in radiative forcing and atmospheric warming. Moreover, as changes in δD V can be observed by satellites, our results develop new metrics for the detection of global warming impacts to the hydrological cycle and, specifically, the strength of the Walker Circulation.

Abstract:The tropical oceanic response to the extratropical thermal forcing is quantitatively estimated in a coupled climate model. This work focuses on comparison of the responses between the tropical Atlantic and Pacific. Under the same extratropical forcing, the tropical sea surface temperature responses are comparable. However, the responses in the tropical subsurface in the two oceans are distinct. The tropical subsurface response in the Atlantic can be twice of that in the Pacific. The maximum subsurface temperature change in the tropical Pacific occurs in the eastern lower thermocline, while that in the tropical Atlantic occurs in the west and well below the lower thermocline. The different responses in the tropical Atlantic and Pacific are closely related to the different changes in the meridional overturning circulations. The Pacific shallow overturning circulation, or the subtropical cell, tends to slow down (speed up) in response to the extratropical warming (cooling) forcing. The changes in the upwelling in the eastern equatorial Pacific as well as the shallow subduction from the extratropical southern Pacific along the eastern boundary are accountable for the eastern Pacific temperature change. The Atlantic overturning circulation consists of the shallow subtropical cell and the deep thermohaline circulation. A weakened thermohaline circulation will result in a strengthened northern subtropical cell, in which the change in the lower branch, or the low-latitude North Brazil Current, can cause strong response below the western tropical thermocline. Here the coastal Kelvin wave along the western boundary on the intermediate isopycnal level also plays an important role in the equatorward conveying of the climate anomalies in the mid-to-high-latitude Atlantic, particularly during the initial stage of the extratropical forcing.

Response and Feedback of Cloud Diurnal Cycle to Rising Temperatures

Abstract: By reflecting solar radiation and reducing longwave emissions, clouds regulate the earth's radiation budget, impacting atmospheric circulation and cloud dynamics. Given the diurnal fluctuation of shortwave and longwave radiation, a shift in the cloud cycle phase (CCP) may lead to substantial feedbacks to the climate system. While most efforts have focused on the overall cloud feedback, the response of CCP to climate change has received much less attention. Here we analyze the variations of CCP using both long-term global satellite records and general circulation models (GCM) simulations to evaluate their impacts on the earth's energy budget. Satellite records show that in warm periods the CCP shifts earlier in the morning over the oceans and later in the afternoon over the land. Although less marked and with large inter-model spread, similar shifting patterns also occur in GCMs over the oceans with non-negligible CCP feedbacks. Over the land, where the GCM results are not conclusive, our findings are supported by atmospheric boundary layer models. A simplified radiative model further suggests that such shifts may in turn cause reduced reflection of solar radiation, thus inducing a positive feedback on climate. The crucial role of the cloud cycle calls for increased attention to the temporal evolution of the cloud diurnal cycle in climate models.
Fast and Slow Responses of the Tropical Pacific to Radiative Forcing in Northern High Latitudes

Abstract:This study investigates the transient evolution of tropical Pacific sea surface temperature (SST) responses to a constant northern high latitude solar heating in fully coupled CESM 1.2. The study identifies two stages through multiple ensemble runs. (1) In the first three years, a hemispherically asymmetric pattern emerges, caused by air-sea interactions associated with the anomalous cross-equatorial Hadley Cell. The northern tropics experience warming, blocked north of the equator by the intertropical convergence zone. The southeast Pacific cooling reaches the equatorial region and is amplified by the equatorial Ekman divergence. (2) Within a decade, the equatorial cooling is replaced by warming in the eastern equatorial basin. The anomalous warming that appears faster than the timescales of the oceanic ventilation is attributed to anomalous meridional heat convergence and weakening of the northern subtropical cell. Our findings highlight the influence of ocean dynamics on the temporal and spatial evolution of tropical SST response to hemispherically asymmetric heating. The initial cooling caused by Ekman divergence delays the arrival of slow warming, while initial wind and temperature anomalies set the stage for the weakening of the subtropical cell. The results have important implications for understanding the evolution of tropical SST patterns in observational records and future climate change simulations, as they show strong interhemispheric temperature asymmetry in the extratropics.

Effects of the Mean Walker Circulations on the Zonal Variability of Tropical Cisk Waves

Abstract:An idealized zonally asymmetric mean state in the Tropics is used to investigate the effects of atmospheric mean Walker circulations and sea surface temperatures on the zonal variability of tropical waves with positive only wave-CISK heating.First, the effects of the zonally symmetric vertical and meridional shears of the mean zonal flow are investigated with different vertical profiles of convective heating and temperature lapse rate. With the observed vertical profile of temperature lapse rate in the Tropics, the effect of the vertical shear of the mean zonal flow on the fast waves (period about 2 weeks) associated with a maximum heating in the upper troposphere is found to be opposite to that on the slow waves (period about 4 weeks) with a maximum healing in the middle troposphere, while the vertical shear effects with an idealized constant lapse rate are quite similar. The meridional shear of the mean zonal flow acts only to reduce the effects of the vertical shear of the mean zonal flow.Second, with the existence of atmospheric mean Walker circulations, tropical waves increase and decrease alternately when propagating around the globe. It is found that the influence of the mean Walker circulations is mainly from the effects of the vertical shear of the mean zonal flow, and the tendencies of the zonal variations for the fast waves and the slow waves are almost opposite.Third, the amplitudes of zonal variations of the tropical waves as a consequence by the atmospheric mean Walker circulations are comparable to those arising from the zonally asymmetric SSTs in the Tropics. It is found that the combined effect of the mean state makes the fast waves propagate over the colder regions without decreasing, while the slow waves strongly anchor over the warmer regions, implying other processes might be important in sustaining the slow waves over the colder regions where convection is weaker.
Responses of the Hadley Circulation to Regional Sea Surface Temperature Changes

Abstract:Idealized experiments performed with the Community Atmospheric Model 5.3 indicate that the width and strength of the Hadley circulation (HC) are sensitive to the location of sea surface temperature (SST) increases. The HC edge shifts poleward in response to SST increases over the subtropical regions near and on the equatorward flank of the HC edge, and shifts equatorward in response to warming over the tropical area except for the western Pacific Ocean and Indian Ocean. The HC is strengthened in response to SST increases over the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) and is weakened in response to SST increases over the subsidence branch of the HC in the subtropics. Tropical SST increases off the ITCZ tend to weaken the HC in the corresponding hemisphere and strengthen the HC in the opposite hemisphere. These results could be used to explain the simulated HC changes induced by recent SST variations, and it is estimated that more than half of the SST-induced HC widening in 1980–2014 is caused by changes in the spatial pattern of SST.

Abstract:Changes in the sea surface temperature (SST) pattern in the tropical Pacific modulate radiative feedbacks to greenhouse gas forcing, the pace of global warming and regional climate impacts. Therefore, elucidating the drivers of the pattern is critically important for reducing uncertainties in future projections. However, the causes of observed changes over recent decades, an enhancement of the zonal SST contrast coupled with a strengthening of the Walker circulation, are still debated. Here we focus on the role of external forcing and review existing mechanisms of the forced response categorized as either an energy perspective that adopts global and hemispheric energy budget constraints or a dynamical perspective that examines the atmosphere–ocean coupled processes. We then discuss their collective and relative contributions to the past and future SST pattern changes and propose a narrative that reconciles them. Although definitive evidence is not yet available, our assessment suggests that the zonal SST contrast has been dominated by strengthening mechanisms in the past, but will shift towards being dominated by weakening mechanisms in the future. Finally, we present opportunities to resolve the model–observations discrepancy regarding the recent trends.

Abstract:We compare the equatorial Pacific sea surface temperature (SST) responses to radiative forcings in the extratropics of each hemispehre, with heating or cooling imposed in either hemisphere using a fully coupled climate model. In the initial 3 years, the equatorial SST responses exhibit an opposite sign to the forcings in the northern extratropics but align with those in the southern extratropics. At this stage, heating the northern extratropics is more effective at cooling the equatorial Pacific than cooling the southern extratropics. This occurs because the anomalous warming in the northern extratropics is blocked by the rainband and can only enter the equatorial Pacific from the west, triggering Bjerknes feedback more effectively. Over a decade, all experiments show enhanced equatorial responses aligning with the signs of the forcings. The south‐perturbed cases experience stronger equatorial SST responses, suggesting the significant control of the southern extratropics on tropical Pacific on decadal timescales.

Abstract:The response of tropical Atmosphere to oceanic heating and its feedback to ocean are studied by resolving the linear adiabatic equations on equator beta plane. The results show that the direct hearting of ocean to Atmosphere and Kelvin wave, short Rossby wave which are produced by oceanic heating are the reason of the variation of Atmospheric longitudinal wind and disturbed geopotency of zero class. Oceanic heating and short Rossby wave produce the variation of Atmospheric longitudinal wind and disturbed geopotency of two class. On the other hand, oceanic heating indirectly influences oceanic motion by the feedback of Atmosphere to ocean. Oceanic disturbed termocline and longitudinal current of zero class and two class are both indirectly influenced by oceanic heating and Kelvin wave, short Rossby wave which are produced by oceanic heating. High geopotency of tropical Atmosphere also moves eastward under the affection of oceanic heating.

Abstract:The adjustment of the equatorial Pacific thermocline to an initial extratropical thermocline anomaly is studied using analytical and high‐resolution (1/16°) primitive equation numerical models. It is found that the fast adjustment due to the coastal Kelvin wave and equatorial Kelvin and Rossby waves, and the slow adjustment due to the eastern boundary planetary wave play important roles in the redistribution of the initial anomalous mass, thereby determining the phase and magnitude of the equatorial thermocline transition induced by the initial extratropical thermocline transition. For a given extratropical anomaly, both analytical and numerical models show that the equatorial thermocline transition occurs about 2–5 years later, and the magnitude is about 5–10% of the initial anomaly. The mean circulation in the North Pacific intensifies the transition of the equatorial thermocline and reduces the phase‐lag of extratropical‐tropical thermocline transition.

Abstract:A general circulation model of intermediate complexity with an idealized earthlike aquaplanet setup is used to study the impact of changes in the oceanic heat transport on the global atmospheric circulation. Focus is put on the Lorenz energy cycle and the atmospheric mean meridional circulation. The latter is analysed by means of the Kuo-Eliassen equation. The atmospheric heat transport compensates the imposed oceanic heat transport changes to a large extent in conjunction with significant modification of the general circulation. Up to a maximum about 3PW, an increase of the oceanic heat transport leads to an increase of the global mean near surface temperature and a decrease of its equator-to-pole gradient. For larger transports, the gradient is reduced further but the global mean remains approximately constant. This is linked to a cooling and a reversal of the temperature gradient in the tropics. A larger oceanic heat transport leads to a reduction of all reservoirs and conversions of the Lorenz energy cycle but of different relative magnitude for the individual components. The available potential energy of the zonal mean flow and its conversion to eddy available potential energy are affected most. Both Hadley and Ferrel cell show a decline for increasing oceanic heat transport with the Hadley cell being more sensitive. Both cells exhibit a poleward shift of their maxima, and the Hadley cell broadens for larger oceanic transports. The partitioning by means of the Kuo-Eliassen equation reveals that zonal mean diabatic heating and friction are the most important sources for changes of the Hadley cell while the behaviour of the Ferrell cell is mostly controlled by friction.

Responses of Planetary Waves to Global Warming: Implications from CMIP3 4×CO2 Experiments

Abstract:The planetary wave response to global warming with single forcing of greenhouse gases （GHGs） is investigated in this study by using a total of 11 model results that anticipated CMIP3 4×CO2 experiments. It is shown that the amplitudes of the planetary wave fluxes over Siberia, the Eastern North Pacific, and the North Atlantic decrease by approximately -10% to -30% in the warming context. In particular, the vertical wave flux over the Eastern North Pacific significantly decreases by -28.6%. The weakening of the planetary waves is partly associated with the decreased land-sea thermal contrast, which may be caused by the radiation effect of CO2 and the different surface heat capacities of land and sea. The present work provides a clear understanding of the responses of planetary waves to GHGs forcing.
