Abstract:Traditional macroeconomic theories lack a microeconomic basis,so theories of New Classical Economics and New Keynesian Economics have both tried to base their macroeconomics on the stable microeconomic basis,holding that macroeconomics is intended to help the subject of macro-economy make the rational choice by predicting the macroeconomic situation,thus pursuing the optimal interest.Nevertheless,as the result of it,the limitations of the micro-basis study of macroeconomics are made apparent.Hence this paper attempts to expound the potential problems existing in the analytical pattern involved in the micro-basis study of macroeconomics such as representative individual,expectation mechanism,econometric verification from the perspective of econophysics.

Abstract:Development economics emerged as a separate discipline of economic science in the 1950s but it wasn’t until the 1960s and mid-1970s that it began to draw serious attention. Gradually, an extensive literature concerning economic development was built up. In the 1980s it turned out, however, that despite some successes, the economic growth in most of medium and less developed countries was not as high as expected. During the 1980s and 1990s, the so-called Washington Consensus dominated the theory and practice of economic development. This notion covered the whole range of activities that were to lead the developing countries to improved welfare and prosperity. It included strict fiscal and monetary policies, deregulation, foreign trade and capital flow liberalisation, elimination of government subsidies, moderate taxation, liberalisation of interest rates, maintaining low inflation, etc. Based on the developmental experience of over past ten years, a new paradigm of development is emerging, the elements of which can be described as follows: (1) the basic economic environment should encourage the long-term investment in (2) the economy should have a high sensitivity to market stimuli (3) human capital must complement physical capital (4) due to the fast flow and absorption of information in the rapidly changing world, the key role is played by institutions and mechanisms that jointly respond to stimuli (5) wherever market failures occur, an intervention of the state should be market-friendly 6) social equality must be guaranteed if the economic development is to take place on a sustainable basis.

Abstract:The dominant view among macroeconomists is that macroeconomics reduces to microeconomics, both in the sense that all macroeconomic phenomena arise out of microeconomic phenomena and in the sense that macroeconomic theory—to the extent that it is correct—can be derived from microeconomic theory. More than that, the dominant view believes that macroeconomics should in practice use the reduced microeconomic theory: this is the program of microfoundations for macroeconomics to which the vast majority of macroeconomists adhere. The “microfoundational” models that they actually employ are, however, characterized by another feature: they are highly idealized, even when they are applied as direct characterizations of actual data, which itself consists of macroeconomic aggregates. This paper explores the interrelationship between reductionism and idealization in the microfoundational program and the role of idealization in empirical modeling.

Abstract:Development economics became a separate discipline in economic science in the 50s but only in the 60s and mid-70s can one note a bigger interest in those issues. Gradually, there has appeared an extensive literature concerning economic development. In the 80s it turned out, however, that despite some successes, the economic development of the majority of mid- and less developed countries was less satisfactory than expected. During most of the 80s and 90s the so-called Washington consensus dominated theory and practice of economic development. This notion covered the whole range of activities that were to lead the developing countries to greater welfare and prosperity. It included tough fiscal and monetary policy, deregulation, foreign trade and capital flow liberalisation, elimination of government subsidies, moderate taxation, liberalisation of interest rates, maintaining low inflation, etc. From the developmental experience of the past years, a new developmental paradigm is emerging, the elements of which can be described in the following way: • basic economic environment should support investments in the long term • economy should be very sensitive to market stimuli • human resources should complement physical capital • information quick flow and absorption in the fast changing world attribute the key role to the institutions and mechanisms which jointly react to the stimuli. • Wherever there are market imperfections, state intervention should be market friendly. • Social equality must be guaranteed if the economic development is supposed to last on a sustainable basis.

Abstract:Leading economists address the ongoing challenges to economics in theory and practice in a time of political and economic crises. More than a decade of financial crises, sovereign debt problems, political conflict, and rising xenophobia and protectionism has left the global economy unsettled and the ability of economics as a discipline to account for episodes of volatility uncertain. In this book, leading economists consider the state of their discipline in a world of ongoing economic and political crises. Abstract:The goal of this paper is to propose a non-technical and selective introduction to the substance and methodology of the endogenous macroeconomic policy and technology adoption in the macroeconomic and development literature. For concreteness, we demonstrate the general approach by showing as an example how to analyze the huge difference in the FDI policies between India and China, along which we also summarize some recent progress in the literature. Lastly, we introduce three pivotal and interdisciplinary economic models in this area.

Abstract:This article traces the complex intellectual path of Olivier Blanchard, a personification of the controversial evolution of macroeconomic research over the last three decades. After contributing to consolidation of the core of mainstream macroeconomics, Blanchard recently suggested ‘rethinking’ some of its key aspects to take stock of the lessons of the 2008 Great Recession, which he witnessed as the International Monetary Fund’s Chief Economist. This welcome discussion, which according to Blanchard should open mainstream macroeconomics to heterodox thinking, has so far produced a certainly interesting albeit theoretically contradictory synthesis and limited policy consequences. The most paradigmatic aspect of this rethinking of macroeconomics is represented by the abandonment in teaching of aggregate supply and demand in favor of a revival of the IS–LM model complemented by the Phillips curve. While this change of perspective does allow for the instability of ‘natural’ equilibrium to be emphasized, a deeper reading may prove incompatible with the neoclassical foundations of the mainstream approach.

Abstract:After the failure of conventional orthodoxy to promote macroeconomic stability and development, Latin America has become home to a clear movement for rejecting the “macroeconomics of stagnation” that it contains. Given that, the question is whether there is an alternative to the diagnoses and policies that the North offers to Latin America. In this chapter, after examining the crisis of the national development strategy that was old developmentalism, I compare the rising new developmentalism with its earlier version, as well as with the set of diagnoses and policies that rich nations have prescribed and pushed on developing countries since the neoliberal ideological wave became prevalent world-wide: conventional orthodoxy. In the first section, I discuss old developmentalism, its initial success, its obsolescence due to a series of new facts and distortions, and its replacement with conventional orthodoxy since the late 1980s. In the second section, I discuss the importance of the concept of the nation and of the “national development strategy” institution. In the third section, I discuss new developmentalism as a “third discourse” lying between the bureaucratic left wing’s populism and conventional orthodoxy’s macroeconomics of stagnation. In the fourth section, I compare new and old developmentalism. In the fifth section, I compare new developmentalism with conventional orthodoxy with regard to macroeconomic policies and growth strategies.

Abstract:Amartya Sen, in his most recent book Development as Freedom, argues that expansion of human freedom should be viewed both as the primary end and the principle means of development. This article provides an overview and a critical scrutiny of the Senian perspective from the point of view of an economist. First, the author discusses to what extent Sen's normative theory of development justifies a particular focus on inequality and poverty. Second, he looks at Sen's perspective on democratic reasoning as the constructive vehicle for valuational exercises, and in particular how this perspective fits with the recent human development framework of the UNDP. Third, he discusses the relevance of markets within the freedom approach, and, fourth, he reviews some of the most important empirical interconnections between different freedoms studied by Sen.

Abstract:Macroeconomic growth and stability are two of the major benefits of financial development, though there are differences in the literature on the channels through which this growth and stability can be achieved. In recent years, a number of emerging economies experienced phenomenal growth. At a micro level, one needs to understand why and how financial deepening could bring changes in economic agents’ behavior leading to an impact on the saving- investment relationship. At the macro level, financial development, integration and globalization could be possible channels to growth. The purpose of this paper is two-fold. First, we provide a comprehensive discussion of the theoretical and empirical literature on the role of important micro- and macro-policy variables in achieving macroeconomic stability with reference to Southeast Asia. Second, we present new empirical evidence using data from a selected sample of countries from the Asia Pacific region on the links between financial integration, trade integration and growth.

Abstract:This book explores the evolution of the 30 functioning multilateral development banks (MDBs). MDBs have their roots in the growing system of international finance and multilateral cooperation, with the first recognisable MDB being proposed by Latin America in financial cooperation with the US in the late 1930s. That Inter-American Bank did not eventuate but was a precursor to the World Bank being negotiated at Bretton Woods in 1944. Since then, a complex network of regional, sub-regional, and specialised development banks has progressively emerged across the globe, including two significant recent entrants established by China and the BRICS. MDBs arrange loans, credits, and guarantees for investment in member states, generally with the stated aim of fostering economic growth. They operate in both the Global North and South, though there are more MDBs focusing on emerging and developing states. While the World Bank and some of the larger regional banks have been scrutinised, little attention has been paid to the smaller banks or the overall system. This book provides the first study of all 30 MDBs and it evaluates their interrelationships. It analyses the emergence of the MDBs in relation to geopolitics, development paradigms and debt. It includes sections on each of the banks as well as on how MDBs have approached the key sectors of infrastructure, human development, and climate. This book will be of particular interest to researchers of development finance, global governance, and international political economy.

Abstract:Review of Radical Political Economics, Ahead of Print. Students who are trained in standard macroeconomics often prioritize economic efficiency over other values, such as justice. Most of them believe that to achieve higher efficiency, a society needs to sacrifice economic justice. In other words, there exists a tradeoff between equality and efficiency. In my Principles of Macroeconomics class, I therefore create lectures and assignments including self-reflections and group discussions to persuade students to question the value of economic efficiency and justice. The assignments raise the awareness of students about economic justice as another essential value in society. The goal is to encourage students to rethink macroeconomic policies critically, reevaluate their moral biases, and cultivate their moral compass when dealing with ethical dilemmas.JEL Classification: A22, B0, D63, E0
