Abstract:Radio frequency identification (RFID) is a newcomer in supply chain area. With the help of RFID technology, real time information can be collected. Multi-agent technology is a popular way to address distributed supply chain management (SCM), and information sharing plays a key role in multi-agent system. To give multi-agent based model more power and facility, we present a RFID based multi-agent model, in which information synchronization is realized by employing RFID technology at item level. Abstract:The ammunition supply chain is designed to provide responsive ammunition support to deployed forces anywhere in the world. The unique characteristics of ammunition can complicate the supply chain. This paper summarizes technological advantages and limitations of RFID, analyzes status of ammunition supply chain management and gives benefits and problems from RFID. RFID-based system design is given, which includes how to use RFID tag, how to use RFID reader, how to access central database, and so on. The RFID-based system can assure the synchronization of goods flow and information flow. It also helps to improve asset tracking.

Abstract:This paper studies the impact factors and solutions for improving management performance of supply chain inventory control system based on the principles of system dynamics and artificial simulation from the perspective of dynamic complexity. This paper also takes the impact of RFID on the supply chain management into consideration under the context of the Internet of things. We think that "System Structure", "Control Policy" and "Control Parameters" are three kinds of important factors to affect the performance of supply chain inventory management; and presents the "structural solutions" of adjusting the ordering cycle to match lead time, the "strategic solutions" based on taking the order bill amounts and the goods in transit into account, and the "operational solutions" based on parameter control. Then this paper probes the ways of their influence on the management performance under the condition of centralized control and decentralized control. Results show that the effectiveness of these three solutions on management performance is increasing under the condition of centralized control and is decreasing under the condition of decentralized control in turn. The results further show that the system thinking is important and effective to deal with the dynamic complex systems.
RFID adoption and its long-term impact on firm value: An empirical research based on global public companies

Abstract:In the era of the Intemet of things (IoT),RFID is expected to take over barcode technology at a great rate.The technology has been developing rapidly and penetrating into people's daily life.This innovative technology can greatly lower manufacturing cost,reduce the uncertainty caused by information asymmetry,integrate the supply chain,and increase operational efficiency.However,some existing challenges,such as huge initial investment,integration problem,and performance uncertainties,make firms hesitate to undertake this innovative technology project.Empirical evidence on the trade-offbetween RFID benefit and cost in short term is not consistent.IT,like RFID,contributes to performance dimensions,such as strategic flexibility and intangible value.RFID's value cannot be fully realized in a short time and short-term analysis will not identify the impact of RFID adoption adequately.Thus,a long-term observation is needed to investigate RFID's impact.We use monthly data of 89 companies which adopted RFID projects around the world from January 1997 to December 2011.In addition,we perform four years calendar portfolio analysis (CPA) and ROA comparison analysis to gain insights into the mechanism of RFID for improving firm performance.A critique of the management literature on event studies using long-term windows is that other events will naturally occur as the time window expands and will confound the effect of the event under study.In response to this issue,calendar portfolio analysis is used in this study to discover RFID's long term impact on firms' market value.The calendar portfolio analysis is conducted in two steps.The first step computes an average return for the specified calendar-time portfolio.The second step measures the risk-adjusted performance by estimating a multifactor time-series regression model.Since the samples in our study are both US listed and non-US listed,we adopt the merged Fama-French three factors model proposed by Bose et al.'s study.The estimator of model intercept provides a test of the null hypothesis that the abnormal return of the portfolio on the calendar-time portfolio is zero.In addition,we find that firms adopting RFID generally experience significant and negative abnormal market return over a long term.However,single indicator alone has its prerequisite and its insufficiency.In this paper,we employ Return-on-Assets (ROA) as the second measure of firm performance and use ROA comparative analysis to gain insights into the mechanism of RFID for firm performance.We find that the adoption of RFID has influence on ROA of firms over a long term.Industry type is believed to be an essential moderator of IT investment.We follow Bose et al.'s research and classify our samples into manufacturing and nonmanufacturing samples to investigate industry factors that moderate the long-term impact of RFID on the investment return of adopting firms.We find that manufactures that adopt RFID have lower and significant negative abnormal market return,in comparison with non-manufacture adopters.RFID adoption has no significant positive influence on ROA for manufacturers and non-manufacturers.Our results show that RFID may be helpful,but increase operational cost to firms which could hurt their market value and may also cancel the effect of profit growth based on ROA.For managers of manufacturers,extra caution is needed if they want to adopt RFID because those firms may face additional risk due to heavy operational cost and challenges in integrating IT and business.
Adoption of RFID and Its Long Term Impact on Firm Value.

Abstract:With the growing scale of RFID investment, the relationship between RFID and firm value has attracted the attention of a lot of researchers. Prior research had employed the event study method to examine the short term market reaction to RFID adoption and found significant negative abnormal return. In this paper, we extend previous research by investigating the long term impact of RFID investment on firm market value using the CPA (Calendar Portfolio Analysis), 108 announcements related to 74 publicly traded companies were analysed. Our results indicate an overall significant negative impact on long term abnormal return of market value after adoption of RFID. It is also discovered that non-US based firms, late adopters, manufacturers, highly diversified firms, high financially unhealthy firms and low growth potential firms suffered more negative impact in the long term. The results signify that the market is impacted by the risks associated with the use of a new and disruptive technology like RFID and may not yet be ready to accept it as a standard technology that is adopted by firms. Put together, our results provide new insights into how RFID and other contextual factors interact to affect the financial performance of firms in the long run.

Abstract:In the field of textile and clothing, radio frequency identification (RFID), which is one of the most promising technological innovations, is used in manufacturing, inventory control, warehousing, distribution, logistics, automatic object tracking and supply chain management. Various retailers and manufacturers (of clothing as well as consumer goods) such as CVS, Tesco, Prada, Benetten, Wal-mart and Procter & Gamble, are now implementing the technology and exploring the impact of the technology on their business. RFID technologies may improve the potential benefits of supply chain management through reduction of inventory losses, increase of the efficiency and speed of processes and improvement of information accuracy. The basic of success lies in understanding the technology and other features to minimize the potential problems. Although the technology existed for several years, the technological challenges and cost issues are the major hurdles for the widespread use of RFID. In this paper, the authors have addressed the technology of RFID and various applications related to inventory management, production control, retail management, brand segregation etc. in textile and clothing industry. In addition, the disadvantages, challenges and future directions of RFID technology have also been highlighted.

Empirical evidence of RFID impacts on supply chain performance

Abstract:Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the actual benefits of radio frequency identification (RFID) on supply chain performance through the empirical evidence. Design/methodology/approach The research reviews and classifies the existing quantitative empirical evidence of RFID on supply chain performance. The evidence is classified by process (operational or managerial) and for each process by effect (automational, informational, and transformational). Findings The empirical evidence shows that the major effects from the implementation of RFID are automational effects on operational processes followed by informational effects on managerial processes. The RFID implementation has not reached transformational level on either operational or managerial processes. RFID has an automational effect on operational processes through inventory control and efficiency improvements. An informational effect for managerial processes is observed for improved decision quality, production control and the effectiveness of retail sales and promotions coordination. In addition, a three‐stage model is proposed to explain the effects of RFID on the supply chain. Research limitations/implications Limitations of this research include the use of secondary sources and the lack of consistency in performance measure definitions. Future research could focus on detailed case studies that investigate cross‐functional applications across the organization and the supply chain. Practical implications For managers, the empirical evidence presented can help them identify implementation areas where RFID can have the greatest impact. The data can be used to build the business case for RFID and therefore better estimate ROI and the payback period. Originality/value This research fills a void in the literature by providing practitioners and researchers with a better understanding of the quantitative benefits of RFID in the supply chain.

Abstract:RFID Discovery Service provides a means to find all dynamic RFID events related to certain objects as the data set,from different enterprises' information services.To facilitate visual analysis on the discovered data set,a modeling technology for supply chain is proposed..The discovered data set of supply chains is specified,which includes the movement of!objects,aggregating with other objects or disaggregating from an integrity,and processing or transforming materials into new products.As well,an innovative distributed RFID Discovery Service is briefly introduced by combining technologies of P2P and parallel processing.Then,a Petri net based modeling tool "Supply-Net" is proposed,and the algorithm for constructing Supply-Net is given.Finally,analysis and experiments on our algorithm show its high efficiency and utility.

Abstract:Radio Frequency IDentification (RFID) is a dedicated short range communication technology. The term RFID is used to describe various technologies that use radio waves to automatically identify people or objects. RFID is a method of remotely storing and retrieving data using RFID tag. Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology has been attracting considerable attention with the expectation of improved supply chain visibility for consumer goods, apparel, and pharmaceutical manufacturers, as well as retailers and government procurement agencies. RFID technology is used today in many applications, including security and access control, transportation and supply chain tracking. Supply Chain Management (SCM) is now at the centre stage of Manufacturing and service organizations. According to the strategies in markets, supply chains and logistics are naturally being modelled as distributed systems. The economic importance has motivated both private companies and academic researchers to pursue the use of operations research and management service tools to improve the efficiency of Transportation. Efficient Distributed Query Processing in Large RFID-enabled Supply Chains

Abstract:Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) has dramatically streamlined supply chain management by automatically monitoring and tracking commodities. Considering the proliferation of RFID data volume, distributed storage is more applicable and scalable than centralized storage for distributed query processing. Traditional distributed RFID data storage requires each distribution center to locally store raw RFID data, leading to data redundancy, storage and query inefficiency. In this paper, we design an efficient distributed storage model by leveraging Bloom filters to save storage space and improve query efficiency. Meanwhile, we establish corresponding query processing schemes to locally support existence queries and path queries, which are two kinds of most popular queries in the supply chain management. A local query can be completed with constant time complexity regardless of data volume. Experiments demonstrate that our storage model outperforms the traditional one in terms of both space and time efficiency.

Abstract:The disconnected flow of inventory and information will lead to a lack of real-time information and a build-up of excess inventory to buffer uncertainties in supply and demand. In this paper, a radio frequency identification (RFID) based remote monitoring system over the Internet is proposed to provide a transparent and visible information flow for supply chain and enterprise internal resource management. RFID technology has been a hot technology to replace barcodes in supply chain management in recent years. Actually, it has been successfully applied by the US Army in military logistics in 1991. Recently, the superman of the supermarket, Wal-Mart, mandates that its top 100 suppliers must equip RFID tags on their supplied items. However, RFID technology is still not a standard form acceptable for global use. The first big problem is to select a global universal radio frequency (RF) for active and passive RFID systems, but because of the advantages of RFID technology, it is unassailable that it will be popularly used in various fields very soon, such as supply chain management, enterprise resources planning (ERP), sales management, and so on. In this paper, the RFID-based monitoring system for enterprise internal production management is introduced. The RFID technology, Bluetooth, and Internet technology are employed to form a remote system for the monitoring of the production status of a factory. Based on this system, the management department can transparently master and control the status of the production line and supply chain, including raw materials and outsourcing supply/consumption status, production status of parts and components, production status of the finished products, etc. This system will be of benefit to greatly improve the productivity and reduce the cost for the enterprise.

Abstract:Abstract Self-Transactional materials are materials equipped with Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags and communication capabilities that allow them to automatically report their location, use, and condition to a central system. The paper used a combination of literature review and a case study. The integration of RFID technology and the Internet of Things (IoT) into Supply Chain Management (SCM) has gained ground in recent years as a way to improve efficiency, traceability and visibility. The study aims to investigate the impact of "Self-Transactional" materials that are equipped with RFID tags and integrated with a shared IoT database platform in SCM, which can improve inventory management, logistics, procurement processes and supplier-communication client. The study results indicate that Self-Transactional materials can significantly improve SCM by providing real-time visibility into the movement and status of materials, facilitating more efficient and effective coordination of logistics and inventory management. The study will provide valuable insights into the potential benefits and challenges of using Self-Transactional materials with RFID tags and of a shared IoT database platform in SCM and will be of interest to professionals in the field.

Abstract:Counterfeit trade developed into a severe problem for many industries. While established security features such as holograms, micro printings or chemical markers do not seem to efficiently avert trade in illicit imitation products, RFID technology, with its potential to automate product authentications, may become a powerful tool to enhance brand and product protection. The following contribution contains an overview on the implication of product counterfeiting on affected companies, provides a starting point for a structured requirements definition for RFID-based anti-counterfeiting systems, and outlines several principal solution approaches that are discussed in greater detail in the subsequent chapters.

Abstract:It is widely agreed that supply chains encompass and integrate material, information, and financial flows across organizations. There is a robust history and continually expanding research agenda investigating supply chain management practice and theory associated with material and information flows and processes. However, the management of financial flows from a supply chain perspective and in combination with the other flows, usually referred to as supply chain finance (SCF), has been under-investigated. Our understanding of SCF approaches and solutions in purchasing and supply management (PSM) is only starting to form. The purpose of this editorial is to provide some grounding of initial studies and concepts of SCF, illustrate new and emerging thought in this discourse with articles published in this special issue, and speculate how the SCF domain may evolve in theory and practice with the advent of new digital technologies and big data analytics.

Abstract:With the explosion of information in garment production logistics management (GPLM), RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology was introduced to decrease workload of manual inputting and disposing mass data. Combining with the characteristics of garment industry, RFID technology was applied to material warehouse, tailoring workshop, stitching workshop, ironing workshop, finished product warehouse so that the real-time data about order, material, quality, et al. of production processes could be accessed or recorded and the management of basic data could be enhanced. The RFID-based information model and logistics model of garment production were presented by analyzing the information requirement for the GPLM. On the basis of the above work, a RFID-based garment production logistics management system (GPLMS) was developed. The system was used in a garment enterprise and it is shown that the system can greatly improve the automation and intelligence of GPLM.

Abstract:It has been widely recognized that RFID related technologies will greatly improve the visibility, the efficiency and the collaboration of industry supply chain. In this new "product driven" supply chain scenario, manufacturer, supplier, and third party share and coordinate the use of diverse resources in distributed "virtual organizations". It challenges the security issues, which demand new technical approaches. In collaboration with researchers in Auto-ID Labs China, we have developed a service-oriented framework based on CA and Web Services, which supports inexpensive mediation of product information among rapidly evolving, heterogeneous information sources. Our architecture defines a user-driven security model that allows users to create entities and policy domains within virtual organizations. We emphasize that standard Web Services tools and software provide both stateless and stateful forms of secured communication.
RFID technology adoption and supply chain performance: an empirical study in China's logistics industry

Abstract:Purpose The purpose of this paper is to study the factors influencing the adoption of RFID technology and the relation between RFID technology adoption and supply chain performance for logistics companies. Design/methodology/approach Determinants of RFID technology adoption are analyzed from the technological, organizational and environmental perspectives. Supply chain performance measurements consist of financial and non‐financial indices. Data were collected by means of delivering questionnaires to logistics service providers in China. A total of 574 logistics companies were analyzed. Findings Logistics companies' willingness to adopt RFID technology are significantly influenced by the explicitness and accumulation of technology, organizational encouragement for innovation, quality of human resources, and governmental support. There is a positive association between the willingness to adopt RFID technology and supply chain performance for logistics service providers. Research limitations/implications As a single‐country and single‐industry study, the current research may be limited in its generalizability. Practical implications The growth of China's economy hinges to a large extent on the ability of the logistics industry to operate efficiently and effectively in the global supply chain system. China's logistics service providers need to adopt more efficient logistics technologies to provide better supply chain services for their customers. This paper provides some suggestions for governmental officials, logistics companies, and RFID technology providers in advancing the application of RFID in supply chains. Originality/value This paper may be the first empirical research in analyzing the adoption of RFID technology and its association with supply chain performance in the logistics industry, especially for China's logistics industry.
