Abstract:To realize structural vibration control,a two parameters H2 optimization design was proposed to optimize the tuning ratio and damping ratio for electromagnetic tuned mass damper (EMTMD). The control effect of this two parameters optimization design is better than that of classical tuned mass damper (TMD).For this two parameters optimization,the most important thing is that the inductance of the coil can be set very small and the external load resistance can be positive ,which can avoid the use of complex negative impedance circuit. If Ref.[6] were designed according to the H2 optimization of two parameters, the EMTMD can be used for multi-modal vibration control of structures without connecting negative inductance and negative resistance spontaneously.

Abstract:The tuned mass damper parameters designing for structural systems based on combining linear matrix inequality with genetic algorithm is of concern in this paper. Firstly, based on matrix transform, the novel model description with a singular style for structural systems is obtained, in which the possible coupling of those uncertainties is avoided. Secondly, an approach, which combines linear matrix inequality with genetic algorithm, is taken in this work to solving the optimization problems, and the optimized tuned mass damper parameters can be obtained by solving the optimization problems such that the tuned-mass-damper-controlled systems have a prescribed level of vibration attenuation performance. Furthermore, the obtained results are also extended to the uncertain cases. Finally, the effectiveness of the obtained theorems is demonstrated by numerical simulation results.

Abstract:Tuned Mass Damper (TMD) devices are one of the oldest vibration control means and are widely used in different engineering contexts. Despite the bulk of literature on various TMD‐related issues, the effectiveness of TMDs in reducing the earthquake response of civil engineering structures is still debated. This paper deals with the optimum tuning of the free parameters of a passive TMD applied to sample frame structures subjected to selected seismic excitations. A tuning procedure consisting of a numerical Minimax optimization algorithm is implemented within MATLAB. The so‐conceived TMD turns out to be optimum with respect to the specific seismic event, hence allowing for optimum reduction in primary seismic response. Both optimization process and seismic analysis are carried out in the time domain, through direct integration of the equations of motion. The method is tested on benchmark single‐DOF and multi‐DOF shear‐type prototype structures from the literature by assuming first the Imperial Valley 1940 seismic input, as a sort of benchmark excitation, and then additional recent strong motion earthquakes. In essence, this paper shows that, in principle, with present reference to frame structures, the optimum tuning of TMD parameters at given seismic input is theoretically possible. Parametric Optimal Bounded Feedback Control for Smart Parameter-Controllable Composite Structures

Abstract:Deterministic and stochastic parametric optimal bounded control problems are presented for smart composite structures such as magneto-rheological visco-elastomer based sandwich beam with controllable bounded parameters subjected to initial disturbances and stochastic excitations. The parametric controls by actively adjusting system parameters differ from the conventional additive controls by systemic external inputs. The dynamical programming equations for the optimal parametric controls are derived based on the deterministic and stochastic dynamical programming principles. The optimal bounded functions of controls are firstly obtained from the equations with the bounded control constraints based on the bang–bang control strategy. Then the optimal bounded parametric control laws are obtained by the inversion of the nonlinear functions. The stability of the optimally controlled systems is proved according to the Lyapunov method. Finally, the proposed optimal bounded parametric feedback control strategy is applied to single-degree-of-freedom and two-degree-of-freedom dynamic systems with nonlinear parametric bounded control terms under initial disturbances and earthquake excitations and then to a magneto-rheological visco-elastomer based sandwich beam system with nonlinear parametric bounded control terms under stochastic excitations. The effective vibration suppression is illustrated with numerical results. The proposed optimal parametric control strategy is applicable to other smart composite structures with nonlinear controllable parameters.

Abstract:The present work explores the utilization of the tuned mass damper-inerter (TMDI) in controlling the structural response subjected to wind and earthquake excitations. An example of a 25-storey reinforced concrete building is taken up. The equations of motion of the structure-TMDI combined system are established by assuming the building behaves as a shear-building with multiple degrees of freedom. These equations are solved using Newmark's time integration method. The objective functions are the wind- and earthquake-induced structural response quantities, such as the maximum inter-storey drift ratio (MIDR) and peak floor acceleration (PFA). The prime contribution of this study is the inclusion of statistical measures such as the mean, 85th, and 95th percentiles for these quantities. A genetic algorithm-based multi-objective optimization is performed to estimate the optimum TMDI parameters. Based on the outcomes of this study, it can be recommended that the TMDI be optimized to perform well under the 95th percentile for MIDR and PFA in effectively reducing the peak structural responses. Frequency domain analysis results demonstrate TMDI's multiple-mode controlling capability. The energy comparison plots of the uncontrolled and controlled structures prove the effectiveness of the optimum TMDI in providing enough damping and ensuring structural stability.

Abstract:Damping is an important aspect of structural dynamics and machine operations. In this paper, ‘active’ and ‘passive’ dampers are proposed and incorporated with mechanical structures to evaluate their effectiveness on structural dynamics using finite element method. An active damper element with nonlinear stiffness and damping approximated by polynomial functions is defined. A passive rubber damper is also implemented in a similar way, i.e. a rubber element using a standard linear model. Examples are presented to demonstrate the feasibility.

Abstract:This study proposes a new method toward optimizing the design of non-conventional tuned mass dampers in multi-degree-of-freedom systems. An important application of the proposed method is in mega-sub-controlled structures in which the seismic vibration of the system is controlled by using isolated sub-structures. The method estimates the optimum parameters of the sub-structures including frequency ratio and damping ratio based on formulations derived for optimal design of SDOF systems with tuned mass dampers. The method is verified by comparing the results with a numerical method. It is shown that the proposed method returns the optimum parameters with acceptable accuracy (less than 5% difference from numerical results), and in some cases the results are identical to the numerical method. In the final part, the method is applied to three mega-structures with different control systems in order to examine its accuracy in predicting the optimum parameters of the non-conventional tuned mass dampers. It is concluded that the method is efficient and can be used for optimal design of such systems.

Abstract:To control the stochastic vibration of a vibration-sensitive instrument supported on a beam, the beam is designed as a sandwich structure with magneto-rheological visco-elastomer (MRVE) core. The MRVE has dynamic properties such as stiffness and damping adjustable by applied magnetic fields. To achieve better vibration control effectiveness, the optimal bounded parametric control for the MRVE sandwich beam with supported mass under stochastic and deterministic support motion excitations is proposed, and the stochastic and shock vibration suppression capability of the optimally controlled beam with multi-mode coupling is studied. The dynamic behavior of MRVE core is described by the visco-elastic Kelvin-Voigt model with a controllable parameter dependent on applied magnetic fields, and the parameter is considered as an active bounded control. The partial differential equations for horizontal and vertical coupling motions of the sandwich beam are obtained and converted into the multi-mode coupling vibration equations with the bounded nonlinear parametric control according to the Galerkin method. The vibration equations and corresponding performance index construct the optimal bounded parametric control problem. Then the dynamical programming equation for the control problem is derived based on the dynamical programming principle. The optimal bounded parametric control law is obtained by solving the programming equation with the bounded control constraint. The controlled vibration responses of the MRVE sandwich beam under stochastic and shock excitations are obtained by substituting the optimal bounded control into the vibration equations and solving them. The further remarkable vibration suppression capability of the optimal bounded control compared with the passive control and the influence of the control parameters on the stochastic vibration suppression effectiveness are illustrated with numerical results. The proposed optimal bounded parametric control strategy is applicable to smart visco-elastic composite structures under deterministic and stochastic excitations for improving vibration control effectiveness.

Abstract:An optimization method for time-delayed feedback control of partially observable linear building structures subjected to seismic excitation is proposed. A time-delayed control problem of partially observable linear building structure under horizontal ground acceleration excitation is formulated and converted into that of completely observable linear structure by using separation principle. The time-delayed control forces are approximately expressed in terms of control forces without time delay. The control system is then governed by Itô stochastic differential equations for the conditional means of system states and then transformed into those for the conditional means of modal energies by using the stochastic averaging method for quasi-Hamiltonian systems. The control law is assumed to be modal velocity feedback control with time delay and the unknown control gains are determined by the modal performance indices. A three-storey building structure is taken as example to illustrate the proposal method and the numerical results are confirmed by using Monte Carlo simulation.

Abstract:Structural optimization and vibration control have long been recognized as effective approaches to obtain the optimal structural design and to mitigate excessive responses of tall building structures. However, the combined effects of both techniques in the structural design of wind-sensitive tall buildings with excessive responses have not been revealed. Therefore, this paper develops an integrated design technique making use of both the advantages of structural optimization and vibration control with an empirical cost model of the control devices. While the structural optimization is based on a very efficient optimality criteria (OC) method, a smart tuned mass damper (STMD) is used for the structural control purposes. Utilizing data obtained from synchronous pressure measurements in the wind tunnel, a 60-story building of mixed steel and concrete construction with three-dimensional (3D) mode shapes was employed as an illustrative example to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed optimal performance-based design framework integrating with structural vibration control.

Abstract:This paper presents a simultaneous optimization approach to the design of the multiple active tuned mass damper (MATMD) and its controller for building vibration attenuation under seismic excitations. A model of an n‐storey building installed with the MATMD system, where the masses can be placed on different storeys, is considered, and its state‐space model is established by appropriately defining the state variables and the output signals. Considering that earthquake records exhibit higher strength over a certain range of frequency and the fact that not only the controller design but also the parameter optimization of the MATMD system have significant effects on the control performance, a simultaneous optimization approach based on the genetic algorithm (GA) is proposed to design the static output‐feedback controller and to obtain the MATMD's parameters for the attenuation of seismic building vibration over a finite frequency range. Using the proposed approach, a set of parameters and the constrained controller gains, which can guarantee the asymptotic stability of the closed‐loop system and attenuate the building vibration at a sufficiently low level, are obtained. Simulations are used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach and the superiority of a strategy that places the masses on different storeys in attenuating building vibration under earthquake excitation.
Analytical Solutions of H2 Control and Efficiency‐based Design of Structural Systems Equipped with a Tuned Viscous Mass Damper

Abstract:In this study, an optimal design of a tuned viscous mass damper (TVMD) incorporated into a single-degree-of-freedom structure system subjected to earthquake-induced random vibrations is studied. Closed-form design formulas of the optimal frequency ratio and damping ratio are proposed for the control of structural displacement and acceleration responses based on H-2 norm optimization. The optimal solutions exist when the mass ratio is smaller than 0.11. The calculated optimal parameters for displacement control and acceleration control are close to each other, which indicates that the displacement and acceleration responses can be controlled simultaneously with the TVMDs designed by the easy-to-use formulas proposed in this study. To expand the use of the proposed formulas for cases with large mass ratios, the alternative suggested design (ASD) is proposed to explicitly represent the recommended relationships between the design parameters. This paper also examines the control effect of a TVMD over linear viscous dampers, defining an efficiency index as a ratio of the response yielded by a TVMD system to that of a viscous damper system. The optimally designed TVMD is generally more efficient than directly adding damping with viscous dampers when the mass ratio is small, while this advantage is insignificant when the mass ratio grows. Based on this outcome, a new method termed efficiency-based design is proposed. This user-friendly method can assist practicing engineers in determining the mass ratio, the frequency ratio, and the damping ratio of TVMDs.
Optimal control for vibration peak reduction via minimizing large responses

Abstract:An optimal control method for peak response reduction and its application to a tall building structure for reducing peak earthquake responses are presented in this paper. A critical value is used for magnifying large responses and performance index. A structural control system is transformed, and the dynamical programming principle is applied to form a dynamical programming equation. For a certain higher-order power function in the index, a nonlinear optimal control law with the corresponding Riccati equation is obtained for minimizing structural large responses or peak responses. The asymptotic stability of the autonomous controlled system is proved by using the Lyapunov method. Then the proposed control method is applied to a single degree-of-freedom system and a 51-storey building structure with active mass damper on the top floor under earthquake excitation. Numerical results on peak displacements, interstorey drifts, accelerations and controls are given to illustrate the high control effectiveness of the proposed control method for peak response reduction. Abstract:Tuned Mass Dampers (TMDs) are commonly used passive control devices in practical engineering applications. However, motion‐limiting stoppers are usually installed to control the excessive TMD displacement due to the building space limitation, resulting in piecewise nonlinearity and detuning of TMD. This paper studies the influence of elastic motion‐limiting stoppers on the optimal design of TMDs through a piecewise stiffness TMD (PSTMD) model. Performance of a PSTMD with classical design is first investigated and proven to be ineffective. To optimize the PSTMD parameters, the motion of PSTMD is decoupled from the controlled structure, and the frequency response equation of PSTMD is obtained analytically through the averaging method. Subsequently, the solution of the optimal design frequency for PSTMD is transformed into the solution of the jump frequency in the frequency response equation. With the optimal frequency of PSTMDs, the optimal damping and control performance of PSTMDs are discussed and analyzed compared with classical linear design, which fully showcases the effectiveness of the novel design method. Finally, the effectiveness of the novel design method is verified using a nine‐story benchmark frame structure, and the results demonstrate that the control performance of the optimal PSTMD can be improved by nearly 10% under specific seismic excitation, compared to the PSTMD with classical linear method. In summary, the novel design method can effectively take into account the influence of piecewise nonlinearity caused by elastic motion‐limiting stoppers and improve the optimal control performance of TMD in a more realistic engineering environment.

Abstract:A novel device based on the energy transfer concept, named impact mass damper (IMD) , is presented for the mitigation of large structural vibrations due to horizontal seismic excitations. To achieve the optimal performance of the nonlinear device, coupled with different standard steel buildings, an optimization procedure is set both employing the design of experiments (DOEs) method and the Kriging surrogate modelling. Concerning the seismic input, site-specific ground motions and record-to-record variability are taken into account, in agreement with the new European standards. The validated performance of the IMD device demonstrates its benefits, in particular for short-period steel buildings.

Abstract:This paper discusses the optimum design of tuned mass damper (TMD) for seismically excited building structures. In the design process the multi degree of freedom structures are considered so that it makes improvement to the available design procedures so far, where usually only single mode model is considered. The H2 norm of the transfer function from the external disturbance to a certain regulated output is taken as a performance measure of the optimization criterion. The genetic algorithm, which has been successfully applied in many applications, is used to find the optimum value of TMD parameters. The numerical examples for optimum parameters of TMD for multi degree of freedom structures are presented to show the effectiveness of this design procedure. It is shown that by using the proposed procedure, the optimum value of the mass damper can be determined without specifying the modes to be controlled. A comparison is also made to the Den Hartog and Warburton approaches.

Abstract:This paper presents a new design method based on a robust-control strategy in the form of a linear matrix inequality (LMI) approach for a passive tuned mass damper (TMD), which is one of the common passive-control devices for structural vibration control. To apply the robust control theory, we first present an equivalent expression that describes a passive TMD as an active TMD. Then, some LMI-based condition is derived that not only guarantees robust stability but also allows us to adjust the robust H¥ performance. In particular, this paper considers the transfer function from a seismic-wave input to structural responses. Unlike other methods, this method formulates the problem to be a convex optimization problem that ensures a global optimal solution and considers uncertainties of mass, damping, and stiffness of a structure for designing a TMD. Numerical example uses both a single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) and 10DOF models, and seismic waves. The simulation results demonstrated that the TMD that is designed by the presented method has good control performance even if the structural model includes uncertainties, which are the modeling errors.

Abstract:The main motivation of this paper is to examine the effect of structural nonlinearities on the engineering demand parameters (EDPs) of seismically excited controlled plan-asymmetric buildings equipped with magneto-rheological dampers. The development of a robust control algorithm for asymmetric buildings due to the randomness of ground excitations and their torsional response has always been a significantly challenging task in the vibrations control of structures. While the control algorithm in a simple approach could be designed ignoring the dependency of stiff and flexible edges of EDPs, the present research aimed also to develop a control strategy that mitigates simultaneously asymmetric edge responses of the structure using the multi-input multi-output ability of fuzzy logic control algorithms. In order to alleviate all difficulties to design an admissible control algorithm and attain the desired level of performance, the nondominated sorting genetic algorithm-II is applied. The effectiveness of the proposed controller on the inelastic seismic behavior of a controlled plan-asymmetric one-story structure is evaluated through a parametric study in which asymmetry is considered in the form of unidirectional mass eccentricity. To take the inelastic behavior of a controlled asymmetric building’s members into account, fiber elements modeling is employed. The model was subjected to a uniaxial lateral disturbance, including ordinary and strong ground motions exciting both lateral and torsional motions.

Adaptive bidirectional dynamic response control of offshore wind turbines with time‐varying structural properties

Abstract:Wind, wave and seismic loading induced excessive vibration of offshore wind turbines (OWTs) impairs the wind turbine energy output and escalates its fatigue damage. The present study proposes a three-dimensional adaptive pendulum tuned mass damper (3D-APTMD) to control the bidirectional dynamic responses of monopile OWTs exposed to combined wind, wave, seismic loading, and time-varying structural properties. In terms of the proposed adaptive tuning algorithm, the natural frequency and damping property of the 3D-APTMD are tuned in real time to match the wind turbine time-varying dominant frequency caused by environmental and/or structural property variations. Performance of the developed adaptive damper is examined on a monopile 5-MW (megawatt) baseline wind turbine subjected to representative wind, wave, and seismic loading. Time-varying stiffness of the tower and foundation is introduced to simulate damage evolution during service life. A three-dimensional pendulum tuned mass damper (3D-PTMD) and dual linear TMDs (2TMD) are used for comparison. Research results show that when damage occurs, 3D-PTMD and 2TMD become partially off-tuned and less effective. In comparison, the 3D-APTMD which is tuned in real time maintains its effectiveness. It can improve the reduction effect by around 25% and 30% when compared with the 3D-PTMD and 2TMD, respectively. Therefore, the proposed 3D-APTMD is promising for real application to protect OWTs, high-rise buildings, chimneys, and other types of slender structures suffering from excessive bidirectional vibration, and environmental, operational, and/or structural property variations.

Abstract:A design method of a Multiple Tuned Mass Damper (MTMD) system is presented for wind induced vibration control of a cable-supported roof structure. Modal contribution analysis is carried out to determine the dominating modes of the structure for the MTMD design. Two MTMD systems are developed for two most dominating modes. Each MTMD system is composed of multiple TMDs with small masses spread at multiple locations with large responses in the corresponding mode. Frequencies of TMDs are distributed uniformly within a range around the dominating frequencies of the roof structure to enhance the robustness of the MTMD system against uncertainties of structural frequencies. Parameter optimizations are carried out by minimizing objective functions regarding the structural responses, TMD strokes, robustness and mass cost. Two optimization approaches are used: Single Objective Approach (SOA) using Sequential Quadratic Programming (SQP) with multi-start method and Multi-Objective Approach (MOA) using Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm-II (NSGA-II). The computation efficiency of the MOA is found to be superior to the SOA with consistent optimization results. A Pareto optimal front is obtained regarding the control performance and the total weight of the TMDs, from which several specific design options are proposed. The final design may be selected based on the Pareto optimal front and other engineering factors.
