Abstract:The relationship between rare earth elements (REEs) and the paleoproduction of Enping Formation(Ep) source rocks is not known. In this paper, 381 samples from 40 wells from the Ep, Wenchang A sag, were analyzed for rare earth elements (REEs) and trace elements using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The rare earth elements were profiled in order to determine their relationship to the depositional environment and paleoproduction of source rocks. Most of the rare earth elements identified are known to have influence on the depositional environment. The results show that the characteristics of trace elements are similar in both the upper Enping Formation(Ep1) and lower Enping Formation(Ep2). Ep source rocks have the characteristics of enrichment of light REEs and loss of heavy REEs, indicating the contribution of terrigenous clastic materials suggestion. In addition, the source rock samples are deposited in freshwater weak salt water, sedimentary water body, warm and humid climate and weak oxidation–weak reduction sedimentary environment. There is a good correlation between paleoproductivity and TOC. The study also shows that paleoproductivity is affected by paleoclimate, paleotemperature, paleoredox and paleowater depth. Warm and humid climate, deep water body and low water temperature are conducive to the accumulation of paleoproductivity and TOC.
