Abstract:New BODIPY dyes have been synthesized via the condensation of R–CH2COCl (R=H, Br, Cl and Et2N) with 2,4-dimethylpyrrole and the coordination with BF3 etherate. The acetyl chlorides with electron-withdrawing substituents (R=Br or Cl) are easier to react with the 2,4-dimethylpyrrole to form the related dyes and make a red-shift in absorbance and fluorescence maximum. Dye 4 (R=Et2N), based on PET mechanism, exhibits good properties as a pH fluorescent sensor with a pKa of 8.74 and a 15-fold fluorescence enhancement in the pH range of 9.38–7.60.

Abstract:A palladium-catalyzed regioselective decarboxylative direct C-H arylation of boron dipyrromethenes (BODIPYs) at the 2,6-positions has been developed as a late-stage approach to rapidly assemble a diversity-oriented BODIPY library. With the complement of this protocol, the direct C-H arylation of BODIPYs becomes regiocontrollable at alpha- and beta-positions. A new type of indole-fused BODIPY exhibiting bright red/NIR fluorescence with a large molar extinction coefficient (145 500 M-1 cm(-1)) and a high quantum yield (71%) has been synthesized for the first time.
Novel Meso-Polyarylamine-bodipy Hybrids: Synthesis and Study of Their Optical Properties

Abstract:A series of 14 meso-polyarylamine-BODIPY (borondipyrromethene) hybrids of the general structure A were synthesized. Two methods were used to prepare them. The first protocol involved a direct Liebeskind-Srogl cross-coupling of thiomethylbodipys 1-2 with arylaminoboronic acids (4 examples, 75-98%). The second method involves a two-step sequence: a Liebeskind-Srogl reaction to prepare 6 meso-bromoarylbodipys (58-83%) followed by a Suzuki coupling of these Br-containing BODIPYs with arylaminoboronic acids (10 examples, 44-84%). Seven of these derivatives displayed emission in the near-infrared region. The optical properties of compound 18 were rationalized in terms of its crystal structure.

Abstract:BODIPY compounds are important organic dyes with exceptional spectral and photophysical properties and numerous applications in different scientific fields. Their widespread applications have flourished due to their easy structural modifications, which enable the preparation of different molecular structures with tunable spectral and photophysical properties. To date, researchers have mostly devoted their efforts to modifying BODIPY meso-position or pyrrole rings, whereas the substitution of fluorine atoms remains largely unexplored. However, chemistry of the boron atom is possible, and it enables tuning of the photophysical properties of the dyes, without tackling their spectral properties. Furthermore, modifications of boron affect the solubility and aggregation propensity of the molecules. This review article highlights methods for the preparation of 4-substituted compounds and the most important reactions on the boron of the BODIPY dyes. They were divided into reactions promoted by Lewis acid (AlCl3 or BCl3), or bases such as alkoxides and organometallic reagents. By using these two methodologies, it is possible to cleave B–F bonds and substitute them with B–C, B–N, or B–O bonds from different nucleophiles. A special emphasis in this review is given to still underdeveloped photochemical reactions of the boron atom of BODIPY dyes. These reactions have the potential to be used in the development of a new line of BODIPY photo-cleavable protective groups (also known as photocages) with bio-medicinal and photo-pharmacological applications, such as drug delivery.

Abstract:Boron dipyrromethene (BODIPY) derivatives 1 and 2 consisting of donor and acceptor units with dual photoresponses to solvent polarity and luminogen aggregation are developed through taking advantage of twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) and aggregation-induced emission (ATE) processes. In nonpolar solvents, the locally excited (LE) states of the BODIPY luminogens emit intense green lights. Increasing solvent polarity brings the luminogens from the LE state to the TICT state, causing a large bathochromic shift in the emission color but a dramatic decrease in the emission efficiency. The red emission is greatly boosted by aggregate formation or ATE effect: addition of large amounts of water into the solutions of 1 and 2 in the polar solvents causes the luminogens to aggregate supramolecularly and to emit efficiently. The emission can be enhanced by increasing solvent viscosity and decreasing solution temperature, indicating that the ATE effect is caused by the restriction of the intramolecular rotations in the aggregates of the luminogens.

Abstract:Conjugated polymers generally contain conjugated backbone structures with benzene, heterocycle, double bond, or triple bond, so that they have properties similar to semiconductors and even conductors. Their energy band gap is very small and can be adjusted via chemical doping, allowing for excellent photoelectric properties. To obtain prominent conjugated materials, numerous well-designed polymer backbones have been reported, such as polyphenylenevinylene, polyphenylene acetylene, polycarbazole, and polyfluorene. 4,4′-Difluoro-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacene (BODIPY)-based conjugated polymers have also been prepared owing to its conjugated structure and intriguing optical properties, including high absorption coefficients, excellent thermal/photochemical stability, and high quantum yield. Most importantly, the properties of BODIPYs can be easily tuned by chemical modification on the dipyrromethene core, which endows the conjugated polymers with multiple functionalities. In this paper, BODIPY-based conjugated polymers are reviewed, focusing on their structures and applications. The forms of BODIPY-based conjugated polymers include linear, coiled, and porous structures, and their structure–property relationship is explored. Also, typical applications in optoelectronic materials, sensors, gas/energy storage, biotherapy, and bioimaging are presented and discussed in detail. Finally, the review provides an insight into the challenges in the development of BODIPY-based conjugated polymers.

Abstract:Fluorophores based on the 4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacene (aka boron dipyrromethene, boron dipyrrin, or BODIPY) platform have found diverse applications in different fields of modern science, medicine and (bio)technology. In this review we describe the numerous postfunctionalization methodologies of the boron dipyrromethene core designed and realized by research groups around the globe. In the postfunctionalization approach, boron dipyrromethenes with reactive functionalities attached directly to the core (halogen or hydrogen atoms, methyl, formyl, or alkylthio groups) are used as starting materials for further derivatization. The various synthetic methods towards these starting compounds and their postmodification are reviewed. We discuss the different strategies devised for postderivatization of the BODIPY nucleus at all possible positions (the pyrrole carbons, the meso-carbon, and the boron atom) and compare them concisely with the standard prefunctionalization methodology. Important properties and applications of a number of substituted BODIPYs made by the methods described in this review are also presented.

Abstract:The outline of the review is as follows. In Section 2, the synthesis and regulatory strategies for BODIPY are summarized, and inspiring cutting‐edge work in post‐functionalization strategies is highlighted. Section 3 gives a brief overview of assembly model of BODIPY. In this section, we introduce BODIPY as a promising building block for the formation of single‐ and multi‐component self‐assembled systems, including nanostructures suitable for aqueous environments, thereby showing the great development potential of supramolecular assembly in biomedicine applications. Section 4 describes the frontier progress of BODIPY in biomedical applications. This section reviews examples of the frontiers of biomedical applications of BODIPY‐containing smart materials. It mainly involves the application of materials based on BODIPY building blocks and their assemblies in fluorescence bioimaging, PAI, disease treatment including PDT, PTT and immunotherapy. In Section 5, not only the current status of the BODIPY family in the biomedical field but also the challenges worth considering are summarized. Abstract:BODIPY chromophores (4,4-difluoro-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacene) are one of the most versatile fluorophores which are commonly used in a variety of scientific fields. The combination of excellent photophysical properties with the possibility of easy chemical modification of structure, chemical and photostability determines the application of BODIPY in biomedicine, photocatalysis, analytical chemistry and materials science. This review summarizes approaches to the synthesis and modification of BODIPY, discussing both classical and recently-published synthetic and postfunctionalization approaches. An influence of BODIPY structure and various postfunctionalization methods on photophysical properties of the fluorophores and their potential applications in biomedicine, materials science and biosensorics are also discussed. The bibliography includes 344 references.

Abstract:Photochemistry is a tremendous research field offering many synthetic possibilities to the chemists. Breakthroughs in this area have been notably driven by the implementation of new classes of photocatalysts. Within this context, Bodipy (Boron‐dipyrromethene) dyes possess attractive chemical and physical features such as their modularity, strong absorption under visible light irradiation, good thermal and photochemical stabilities and high fluorescence quantum yields. As such, this class of compounds has found widespread applications in functionalized materials, biology, medicine or organic chemistry. From an organic‐synthetic point of view, excited states of Bodipy dyes have been harnessed in electron and energy transfer reactions. This minireview collates the relevant literature on the applications of these catalysts in synthetic photochemistry and provides some perspectives of this research area.

Abstract:Since the development of the chemistry and applications of boron dipyrromethene dyes (BODIPYs), numerous other platforms based on boron complexes of N‐donor ligands have emerged as molecular optoelectronic materials. By tailoring the structure of the ligand bound to boron, the optical and electronic properties of a compound can be precisely tuned for unique properties, such as aggregation‐induced emission (AIE) in the case of boron difluoride hydrazones (BODIHYs). We examine the impact of modifying the typical bidentate hydrazone ligand structure used to prepare BODIHYs to enable a tridentate coordination mode to produce boron complexes of tridentate acyl pyridylhydrazones. This change allows for the use of arylboronic acids as sources of boron and facilitates the inclusion of complex organic components at the boron centre, including the formation of dye‐dye conjugates. The synthesized compounds exhibit distinct optical and electronic properties when compared to BODIHYs, such as reversible electrochemical reduction and up to a >300 nm pseudo‐Stokes shift in the solid state, all of which were supported by density functional theory calculations.

Abstract:A new series of boron-dipyrromethene (BDP, BODIPY) dyes with dihydronaphthalene units fused to the beta-pyrrole positions (1a-d, 2) has been synthesised and spectroscopically investigated. All the dyes, except pH-responsive 1d in polar solvents, display intense emission between 550-700 nm. Compounds 1a and 1b with a hydrogen atom and a methyl group in the meso position of the BODIPY core show spectroscopic properties that are similar to those of rhodamine 101, thus rendering them potent alternatives to the positively charged rhodamine dyes as stains and labels for less polar environments or for the dyeing of latex beads. Compound 1d, which carries an electron-donating 4-(dimethylamino)phenyl group in the meso position, shows dual fluorescence in solvents more polar than dibutyl ether and can act as a pH-responsive "light-up" probe for acidic pH. Correlation of the pK(a) data of 1d and several other meso-(4-dimethylanilino)-substituted BODIPY derivatives allowed us to draw conclusions on the influence of steric crowding at the meso position on the acidity of the aniline nitrogen atom. Preparation and investigation of 2, which carries a nitrogen instead of a carbon as the meso-bridgehead atom, suggests that the rules of colour tuning of BODIPYs as established so far have to be reassessed; for all the reported couples of meso-C- and meso-N-substituted BODIPYs, the exchange leads to pronounced redshifts of the spectra and reduced fluorescence quantum yields. For 2, when compared with 1a, the opposite is found: negligible spectral shifts and enhanced fluorescence. Additional X-ray crystallographic analysis of 1a and quantum chemical modelling of the title and related compounds employing density functional theory granted further insight into the features of such sterically crowded chromophores.
Two-Photon Absorption of BODIPY, BIDIPY, GADIPY, and SBDIPY

Abstract:Substituted boron-dipyrromethene compounds (BODIPYs) have gained significant attention due to their tunable photophysical properties, including two-photon absorption (2PA), a nonlinear optical process where two photons are absorbed simultaneously. The tuning of BODIPY's photophysical properties has recently led to the synthesis of pnictogen-containing derivatives, such as SBDIPY and BIDIPY, where boron is replaced by antimony (Sb) or bismuth (Bi), respectively, as well as other analogues like GADIPY, which contain gallium (Ga). This study presents a computational investigation into their 2PA properties, exploring the impact of various substitutions across these systems. The 2PA cross-sections (σ2PA), electronic excitation energies (ΔE), and dipole moments (µ00, µ11, µ01, Δµ) were computed for 18 DIPY chromophores in the gas-phase with time-dependent density-functional theory (TD-DFT) using several functionals (CAM-B3LYP, ωB97X, M06-2X, M11, and MN15), and then compared to RI-CC2 results. The computed mean absolute errors were small, with the MN15, CAM-B3LYP, and M06-2X functionals being among the best-performing for the properties analyzed. In general, for the parent (unsubstituted) compounds, replacing the core atom in DIPY chromophores results in negligible changes to their σ2PA. However, extending the conjugation through the addition of phenyl substituents significantly increases σ2PA values, and the nature of the core atom impacts the magnitude of this enhancement.

Abstract:Supramolecular polymers are often investigated for highly symmetric and planar molecules, such as typically explored BF2-substituted BODIPY dyes . However, it is surprising that the possibility of desymmetrizing the sp3 hybridized boron centre of BODIPY dyes has remained unexplored in the context of supramolecular polymerization. Herein, we synthesized a new BODIPY derivative 2 with two different substituents at the boron (fluorine and phenyl), resulting in a system with two different π-surfaces, and analyzed its supramolecular polymerization in non-polar media. Notably, this symmetry reduction increases the complexity of the self-assembly by enabling the formation of an intermediate assembled state, which can not be found in the symmetrical model BODIPY 1 with a BF2 group. Different experimental and theoretical studies suggest that significant steric effects together with multiple potential intermolecular stacking modes of the BODIPY dyes lead to discrete nanoparticle intermediates that ultimately transform into more-ordered H-type supramolecular polymers at lower temperatures. Our results introduce a new design strategy for controlled supramolecular polymerization.

Abstract:4,4-Difluoro-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacene (BODIPY)-based-π-conjugated derivatives are endowed with extraordinary photonic and electronic properties. The BODIPYs possess unique features, including easy functionalization, simple synthetic modification, highly conjugated structure, strong absorption with high fluorescence quantum yield. In the last few decades, research has been devoted for developing BODIPY based materials with a wide range of applications in the field of both optoelectronic and biomedical applications. The incorporation of a variety of π-conjugated substituents at the meso position as well as at the pyrrolic position of BODIPY perturbs the photophysical and electrochemical properties to a greater extend. This perturbation leads to redshifted absorption with high molar extinction coefficient, excellent luminescent properties, good ion sensing properties and balanced hole and electron transport of BODIPY based materials. In this review, we have discussed the photophysical properties of a wide range of π-conjugated BODIPY based materials which are having potential applications in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), nonlinear optics (NLOs), sensing, hole-transporting materials (HTMs) and electron-transporting materials (ETMs) for perovskite solar cells (PSCs) as well as materials for ultrafast charge transfer. We have also addressed the photophysical and electrochemical properties of the meso-, α- and β-functionalized BODIPYs which depend on the substitution pattern on the BODIPY core.

Abstract:4,4-Difluoro-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-sindacene (BODIPY) is a sort of photofunctional dye which possesses advantages including strong light-capturing property, high photon-resistance, etc. Meso-N substituted aza-BODIPY is a crucial derivative of BODIPY scaffold that has the favorable optical properties and a significant spectral redshift. The photophysical properties can be tuned by molecular design, and the attenuation path of the excited state energy release of absorbed light energy can be well controlled via structural modifications, enabling tailored application. It has been extensively employed in life medicine fields including fluorescence imaging diagnosis, photodynamic therapy photosensitizer and photothermal therapy reagent and so forth. Extensive research and review have been performed in these areas. However, BODIPYs/aza-BODIPYs have a significant role in energy, catalysis, optoelectronics, photo-responsive materials and other fields. Nevertheless, there are relatively few studies and reviews in these fields on the modification and application based on BODIPY/aza-BODIPY scaffold. Herein, in this review we summarized the application of BODIPY/aza-BODIPY in the aforementioned fields, with the molecular regulation of dye as the foundation and the utilization in the above fields as the objective, in the intention of providing inspiration for the exploration of innovative BODIPY/aza-BODIPY research in the field of light resource conversion and functional materials.

Abstract:The molecular engineering of boron dipyrromethenes (BODIPYs) has garnered widespread attention due to their structural diversity enabling tailored physicochemical properties for optimal applications. However, catalytic enantioselective synthesis of structurally diverse boron-stereogenic BODIPYs through intermolecular desymmetrization and BODIPYs with atroposelectivity remains elusive. Here, we showcase rhodium(II)-catalyzed site-specific C-H (hetero)arylations of prochiral BODIPYs and polysubstituted BODIPYs with diazonaphthoquinonesand diazoindenines, providing efficient pathways for the rapid assembly of versatile (hetero)arylated boron-stereogenic and axially chiral BODIPYs through long-range desymmetrization and axial rotational restriction modes. The synthetic application of the procedures has been emphasized by the efficient synthesis of BODIPY derivatives with various functions. Photophysical properties, bioimaging, and lipid droplet-specific targeting capability of tailored BODIPYs are also demonstrated, indicating their promising applications in biomedical research, medicinal chemistry, and material science.

Abstract:Boron dipyrromethenes (BODIPYs) are a class of tetracoordinate boron compounds that have attracted considerable interest in recent decades due to their excellent spectroscopic properties and structural versatility, leading to their widespread applications in chemical, biological, pharmaceutical and materials science. However, BODIPYs possessing boron-stereogenic centres in enantioenriched forms are rare and catalytic methodology to enantioselectively prepare a boron-stereogenic BODIPY remains elusive. Here we report a palladium-catalysed protocol for the enantioselective synthesis of boron-stereogenic BODIPYs via a desymmetric intramolecular C–H arylation reaction. This method gives access to a wide range of highly functionalized boron-stereogenic BODIPYs, including six- to nine-membered boron heterocycles, with good to excellent enantioselectivities. The discrimination of the two α C–H bonds of the BODIPY core is enabled by the co-action of steric hindrance and attractive interaction in the catalytic chiral pocket. Photophysical properties, derivatizations and applications in chiral recognition of the obtained chiroptical BODIPYs are investigated. This work enriches the chemical diversity of chiroptical BODIPY dyes.

Abstract:Borondipyrromethene (BODIPY) derivatives have been widely exploited and recognized as useful fluorescent sensing and labeling reagents in biomolecules due to their unique photophysical properties, such as strong absorption in the visible and near-IR ranges, high fluorescence quantum yield and excellent photo-stability. Recently, many BODIPY-derived probes have been developed for the detection of metal ions. BODIPY dye as a kind of fluorescent probe has been obtained much attention, which has outstanding physicochemical properties and excerlent selectivity, and sentiivity. In this review, the progress in the fields of ion chemosensor based on BODIPY is summarized.
